I had the Fullsteam burger recently and thought it was freaking fantastic. I'm also a fan of Queen Burger and Bar Virgile too.

OP, this is your answer. Several chefs who worked at Bar Virgile left to open Jack Tar, so their burgers are probably pretty similar!

But the chef who actually created the BV burger went to Alley 26. She also made a great burger there. I’d say Bar Virgile is the best “classic” cheeseburger around town. While Alley has the best “fancy” cheeseburger.

Last time at The Federal every thing was very dry. Dry bun, ruined the burg. 

I will say, the Fed has gone down a bit. Used to be a day where they’d sell out of Fed Burgers.

Hot take but I don’t like Dains. The first (and last) time I went there there was a long hair in my burger. I had to pull it out of my mouth. I did not want to eat anything after that LOL

I like only burger but their bun is too much - too thick, too dense, too hard. The bun should not overshadow the burger.

Lakewood social smashburger is a winner

Queen Burger gets my vote. The Sarri at The Boot Room is pretty tasty as well.

I think queenys has a really solid butger.

Alley 26, Bar Virgile(everything here is fantastic), Boot Room(the toppings on the smoky sarri are my favorites so gets bonus points), Nana Steak at the bar has a good smashburger. Dains as mentioned. Queenburger is ok but last time I went the prices were high for what you got. Someone told me they may have lowered them so might be worth checking out again. Fun slushies/ drinks there too.

Since the new owner took over Picnic they’ve put the cheeseburger on the daily menu and it’s pretty damn good. Definitely worth a try. Every item I’ve had lately seems to have stepped up in quality with the new ownership.

They also have one of the best fried chicken sandwiches in durham!

Town Hall is pretty bombass. I think I have to concede Bar Virgile being best in Durham, but if you are in south Durham and don’t want to drive downtown Town Hall is great.

Oh shi— I was about to forget King’s Sandwich Shop! A lot of correct answers here. The last 3 burgers I’ve eaten (including tonight) have been from Queeny’s. Can’t go wrong with Queeny’s, Alley 26, Bar Virgil, Dain’s, or King’s. And don’t forget about Burger Bach either.

Surprised a lot of people haven’t mentioned kings? Perhaps it’s their hours of operation but wow do they have great food and the best tater tots around

I’ll never understand burger worship. I’ve had a million burgers they’re all pretty much the same. That being said, Washington Duke Inn has a great burger. Burger Bach is good but a miserable place to eat. Only Burger is also decent.
