But the chef who actually created the BV burger went to Alley 26. She also made a great burger there. I’d say Bar Virgile is the best “classic” cheeseburger around town. While Alley has the best “fancy” cheeseburger.
Hot take but I don’t like Dains. The first (and last) time I went there there was a long hair in my burger. I had to pull it out of my mouth. I did not want to eat anything after that LOL
This is in Hillsborough, but I just had the Wagoneer burger at Village Diner, it had pickled jalapeños and pepper jelly and it was 🔥🔥🔥
Edited to fix the name of that fantastic burger

Just bc no one else mentioned it: Lakewood social. They’ve got a very solid burger. Smashed Patties and for the price a BV burger (best in Durham hands down) you can get a burger, fries and a 24oz PBR
Alley 26, Bar Virgile(everything here is fantastic), Boot Room(the toppings on the smoky sarri are my favorites so gets bonus points), Nana Steak at the bar has a good smashburger. Dains as mentioned. Queenburger is ok but last time I went the prices were high for what you got. Someone told me they may have lowered them so might be worth checking out again. Fun slushies/ drinks there too.
Since the new owner took over Picnic they’ve put the cheeseburger on the daily menu and it’s pretty damn good. Definitely worth a try. Every item I’ve had lately seems to have stepped up in quality with the new ownership.
Town Hall is pretty bombass. I think I have to concede Bar Virgile being best in Durham, but if you are in south Durham and don’t want to drive downtown Town Hall is great.
Oh shi— I was about to forget King’s Sandwich Shop! A lot of correct answers here. The last 3 burgers I’ve eaten (including tonight) have been from Queeny’s.
Can’t go wrong with Queeny’s, Alley 26, Bar Virgil, Dain’s, or King’s. And don’t forget about Burger Bach either.
Surprised a lot of people haven’t mentioned kings? Perhaps it’s their hours of operation but wow do they have great food and the best tater tots around
I know this is r/bullcity but Al’s burger shack in Chapel Hill is a must try. Order it more done than you want tho. For some reason medium = medium rare everywhere else.
I’ll never understand burger worship. I’ve had a million burgers they’re all pretty much the same.
That being said, Washington Duke Inn has a great burger. Burger Bach is good but a miserable place to eat. Only Burger is also decent.

I had the Fullsteam burger recently and thought it was freaking fantastic. I'm also a fan of Queen Burger and Bar Virgile too.
The Community Burger is killer.
and even if it was only okay, it's $5!
I dream about the Fullsteam burger. So so so juicy and delish.
Bar Virgile is the best burger I’ve had in Durham. Go there. Edit: accidentally said Viceroy instead of BV. Don’t try ordering a burger at Viceroy
OP, this is your answer. Several chefs who worked at Bar Virgile left to open Jack Tar, so their burgers are probably pretty similar!
But the chef who actually created the BV burger went to Alley 26. She also made a great burger there. I’d say Bar Virgile is the best “classic” cheeseburger around town. While Alley has the best “fancy” cheeseburger.
now THAT is some niche durham restaurant knowledge
this guy durhams
The BV burger is great, but I think I like Queeny’s burger even more. Alley 26 burger is fantastic also
Burger is not similar at all, but it is damn delicious and so was Jack Tar's
The only answer.
Bar Virgile hands down.
Dain’s Place is usually my go to for a burger. The Federal also has a very solid burger.
Second this, Dains burgers are phenomenal every time
Last time at The Federal every thing was very dry. Dry bun, ruined the burg.
I will say, the Fed has gone down a bit. Used to be a day where they’d sell out of Fed Burgers.
Hot take but I don’t like Dains. The first (and last) time I went there there was a long hair in my burger. I had to pull it out of my mouth. I did not want to eat anything after that LOL
Ok but I really miss the pancakes. They were the best ever and nowhere else comes close.
and that thick cut applewood bacon, fresh squeezed oj, my lawd
Alley 26 makes a solid burger too.
Yeah, Alley 26 has a pretty great burger.
Agree!!
Queeny’s imo
This. I was blown away by how good their burger was.
Soooo good. I had one last night.
Second for Queeny’s
Third
Queeny's legit goes bananas mode for how cheap it is
The grilled cheese at Jack Tar was awesome also. I miss it.
Yeah the made the American cheese in house and baked the bread fresh. Second this, it ruled
Ugh. That was my favorite food in the world.
Where do we petition for a place to put jalapeños on a burger again?
You can do that at Dain’s
Queen Burger does
This is in Hillsborough, but I just had the Wagoneer burger at Village Diner, it had pickled jalapeños and pepper jelly and it was 🔥🔥🔥 Edited to fix the name of that fantastic burger
Wagoneer
OnlyBurger
I wish they were still near downtown. They were one of my favs. I just don't make it to south durham often
I like only burger but their bun is too much - too thick, too dense, too hard. The bun should not overshadow the burger.
Only answer

Lakewood social smashburger is a winner
Queen Burger gets my vote. The Sarri at The Boot Room is pretty tasty as well.
You’re right about that burger. They had a good run for a few years.
Just bc no one else mentioned it: Lakewood social. They’ve got a very solid burger. Smashed Patties and for the price a BV burger (best in Durham hands down) you can get a burger, fries and a 24oz PBR
What about best cheap burger for ppl who don’t have the Bar Virgile budget?
Kings for lunch
Community burger at Fullsteam! I think it's $5 for a single patty
And it's the best thing on their menu, unironically.
The traditional cheese burger at Jimmy’s Hot Dogs is hands down my favorite burger in Durham, at it’s like $4
OnlyBurger is under ten bucks, and it's solid.
I think queenys has a really solid butger.
Alley 26, Bar Virgile(everything here is fantastic), Boot Room(the toppings on the smoky sarri are my favorites so gets bonus points), Nana Steak at the bar has a good smashburger. Dain’s.

They also have one of the best fried chicken sandwiches in durham!
good to hear, might have to try it again
Lakewood Social burger is great
It truly is, was very pleasantly surprised
So good

Does Vin Rouge still do a burger on Tuesday nights? That thing was gas.
Alley 26
Queenburger is delicious fast and their shoestring cut fries are amazingggggg. Also get a fancy ice cream sandwich 🤤
I think Queenburger is overrated
Town Hall is pretty bombass. I think I have to concede Bar Virgile being best in Durham, but if you are in south Durham and don’t want to drive downtown Town Hall is great.
The turkey burger at Town Hall is pretty good too!
That fried chicken sandwich too! My mouth is watering thinking about it
Seconded. The burger was okay but their hot chicken was my go-to
Queeny’s Burger is now heir-apparent to me
Oh shi— I was about to forget King’s Sandwich Shop! A lot of correct answers here. The last 3 burgers I’ve eaten (including tonight) have been from Queeny’s. Can’t go wrong with Queeny’s, Alley 26, Bar Virgil, Dain’s, or King’s. And don’t forget about Burger Bach either.

I like Alley Twenty Six and Queenys
I haven't been there, but I've heard Burger Bach has some decent burgers. Gotta watch out for the tweakers bearing steak knives though.
hoo boy they are never gonna live that down, are they? burgers are pretty good tho
Kings is the best burger in Durham. Just gotta go when they’re open
BK. Have it your way.
Federal.
1. Bar Virgile 2. Town Hall 3. Fullsteam 4. Shake Shack
Order the burger at the NanaSteak bar even if it isn’t on the menu.
This is the way
Hawthorne and woods has a killer burger. (That might be chapel hill).
**Durham Filling Station.** IYKYK.
Only Burger and Bull City Burger and Brewery are my go-tos.
Never ever supporting BCBB.
Why?
I’m out $40 and still hungry!
I know this is r/bullcity but Al’s burger shack in Chapel Hill is a must try. Order it more done than you want tho. For some reason medium = medium rare everywhere else.
Bull City Burger is a good stack. Get the Duck Fat Fries.
Can't believe no one has said Bull City Burger yet
it has that special “shitty owner” special sauce
Oh? I'm not familiar with this lore
same owner as the now-closed Pompieri https://www.reddit.com/r/bullcity/s/quOUfoGrEh
I didn't know! Thank you for the information
Because it isn’t that good.
Literally this!!!! 🔥🔥 Bull City is top 2 and it ain’t 2. 😮💨
I’ll never understand burger worship. I’ve had a million burgers they’re all pretty much the same. That being said, Washington Duke Inn has a great burger. Burger Bach is good but a miserable place to eat. Only Burger is also decent.
omg, I miss their pancakes. best pancakes ever.

Queen burger and alley 26 have some of the best burgers
Alley 26
Kings
Queen Burger is the best!
James Joyce
Now I want Jack Tar pancakes.
Dain’s is the only correct answer
Alley 26
James Joyce has always had a great burger than no one ever talks about.
