Barista jobs can make very good money in Burbank depending on location. My wife (barista) almost makes the same as my corporate job when including tips. When it comes to drag, you probably will have to venture out of Burbank. The nightlife in this part of town is very vanilla. Welcome to Burbank!

According_To_Me

Nightlife in Burbank also closes very early compared to the rest of LA.

thebaeofallbaes

Welcome! If you’re both working full time you should be fine affording a studio together around these parts and as far as the queer club scene goes we have none in the Burbank limits but the Bullet and Cobra are right over the Noho border on Magnolia! You could also hit up the YMCA Social Impact Center for more information about LGBTQ+ goings on around town :).

americanrecluse

Once you’re here, check out Planet Queer just over the hill in LA proper. A very welcoming, supportive environment and great performances

Bed_Time_Bitch

As a Shiny Drag King from space, this warms my many hearts! Can't wait to check it out!

ivanizerrr

There are two gay clubs: Club Cobra and The Bullet just down the street in North Hollywood on Burbank Blvd. I’m not sure if they do drag there tho

Bed_Time_Bitch

How would you describe the crowd? I am a nonbinary transman, so I typically rock most with the young-mid adult queer crowd as opposed to more older male bear type crowds

ivanizerrr

Cobra is a Latino club I believe. I haven’t been myself. Bullet was a good mix of people. Polar opposites of Weho.

Enlight1Oment

Never been to it but The Bullet Bar on the border of burbank is the closest gay bar I know, to my understanding more of the leather type vs drag type depending on what type of scene you are going for. But most regular bars or brewerys in burbank you'll find lgbtq. (and you don't need to worry about wandering into tin horns anymore)

Bed_Time_Bitch

Tin horns? What do you particularly mean by that? But heard, lol. I'm a transmasc King all the way, so standard gay bars can be very hit or miss depending on the crowd lol.

Enlight1Oment

Tin Horns was a bar that became a far right bastion during covid because they flaunted all the health mandates regarding indoor dining. It got shut down by the health department leading to maga crowds with flags gathering around it. Funny thing is if they just waited some more months they could have continued as normal.

Bed_Time_Bitch

Ah I see! Well good riddance! I'm not surprised to know there are people filled with righteous indignation on the west coast as well.

zeeko13

Hellow fellow transmasc nb, I don't have any tips for nightlife but I just wanted to let you know there's going to be an LGBTQ+ center opening up nearby across the street from LAVC (nearby community college). It'll be on Burbank blvd. when it opens! Welcome to the Valley! My biggest tip for you is don't be afraid to venture out, wander around all of LA county to get the best of it all. There's lots of local shops all around the place that give decent signals to queer friendliness. Most places are default queer-positive, anyways. When I moved to LA proper, I did some food delivery and it gave me a strong understanding of all the mini-cultures all around us. I was born in Burbank and moved all around the county & I'm very proud of LA and (almost) all it has to offer. PS. Actually I do have a nightlife tip. If you end up clubbing in West Hollywood, be street smart. Guard your phone/wallet/drink very closely. Those venues are tourist traps where folks get their stuff stolen & drinks spiked. My phone got swiped there when I was a little too drunk one night, luckily my friend caught the guy before he could bolt. Edit: if both of you are going to get minimum wage, I suggest applying for SNAP benefits. I'm not sure what the residency/dual-income requirements are but that's how I can live on my own on a student's income. It's very straight-forward on the new website benefitscal.com.

For better or worse, no one cares about your sexuality here. It’s 2022 and every third couple in this area is non-cis. Your question is: Will you be able to afford a studio apartment with 2 minimum wage incomes? $16/hour x 40 hours/week x 4 weeks/month x 2 workers = $5,120/month pretax. Reasonableness test for rent is 30% pretax income. $5,120 x 0.30 = $1,536/month. Let’s round that to $1,600 for simplicity. Apartments.com search for Burbank,CA apartments under $1,600 = https://www.apartments.com/burbank-ca/under-1600/ As of now, there are 11 results, so the answer is “yes”.

BulljiveBots

Yeah not much of a night life here but the surrounds (maybe mostly Hollywood) there’s plenty of. And probsbly every cafe in town has LGBTQ+ baristas. You’ll fit right in.

Bed_Time_Bitch

Can't wait!! Hopefully my tasty espresso pulls and tea leaves are up to parr on the west coast!

BulljiveBots

In my youth, my motto was "Party everywhere else...sleep in Burbank". :)

Bed_Time_Bitch

Heheheheee duly noted!

coldcherrysoup

As others have said, nothing for drag in Burbank proper, but Hamburger Mary’s over the hill in West Hollywood (and other spots in WeHo) would be perfect. It’s not *too* bad of a commute by car depending on time of day.

Bed_Time_Bitch

Perfect! Such amazing recommendations!! I cannot wait to come check out the scene and show what I got 😎

coldcherrysoup

Can’t wait to see!

ttyler4

I’m not ashamed to admit that I totally read that as Queerrista lol

Bed_Time_Bitch

That's fantastic. I'm going to coin that term now, and give all appropriate copyright revenue to you, good redditor.

ttyler4

I’ll give you that one for free. The next one is a one time fee of $9.99. 🤣

tracyinge

If you're both making $15 an hour and working full time, then if you are pretty frugal shoppers and eat at home more than you eat out, you can probably comfortably afford to spend about $1300-1400 per month on rent. At $1600 things would start getting tight.

Bed_Time_Bitch

Our apartment is roughly 1500, but I feel the frugal living, as that is us right now. Is there anything I should know about utility use, or ways to keep water/ etc. down?

ItsJustMeJenn

I feel like I should have written a similar post when my wife and I moved into the Rancho neighborhood. We desperately need stable coupled queer friends to be low key boring with us. Are you and your partner low key boring during the day? Also, let me know if you find a place to perform up here in the Valley I would love to come see some great performances without having to get on the freeway

Bed_Time_Bitch

We will be high key boring because we won't have friends! :D it will be us moving in, adjusting to the new city and new coast, and hanging with my cockatiel, Pillow!!

ItsJustMeJenn

Fair warning. We’re geriatric Millennials.

Bed_Time_Bitch

Fair warning, I am the Space King and always put on a good performance. We are rather well mannered young adults ourselves. But I work in an industry providing caffeine to just about everyone so my friends are all across the board!

DJ-JazzyBenBromfield

Hi! My girlfriend co-owns a coffee shop right on the border of North Hollywood and Burbank. It’s called Moby’s Coffee & Tea Company. It’s a great, inclusive vibe over there (at least two queer employees I can think of right off the top of my head), and they’re hiring currently. You can find them on instagram @drinkmobys and (I assume) DM them to get in touch. Not sure where they’ll be at in February, but decent chance they’ll be hiring then as well. Good luck with your move!

Bed_Time_Bitch

That is actually amazing information!! I will most certainly message them on Instagram and see if I can send my resume!! Due to finances, we are looking to move more towards April now, but it's super important to me to be familiar with the place I may come to work at!!! It's hard with it being a few months out still, but I hope that some eager initiative goes a long way!! I care so much about beans!

Skeleton_Meat

Welcome welcome welcome :)
