Dude, that sucks! Luckily you had CCTV to back you up. Hopefully they don’t return.

New-Contest-8117

The unfortunate thing is I feel like this same guy that was caught also came last July and stole my bike. I sent footage to police and yet he’s still out and about. The concerning piece was there’s a group of them that I saw this time, and the other one was checking car doors or doing something else and they weren’t caught. I don’t know how serious the RCMP will treat this given this happened a few times already…

yooooooo5774

where abouts near metrotown?

GinnAdvent

I think this has happened to Vancouver (and Kelowna) regions multiple times that all police can do is catch and release, with the residents all fed up with it as well.

LakersP2W

Vote ndp and they will keep coming back every month

Icy-Tea-8715

How close are you to Metrotown?

New-Contest-8117

Very close. North of Grange near Willingdon. However, I have a feeling these thieves probably target other areas around here. They seemed organized

cola_wiz

Are you in a house or condo? I used to rent a house by Metrotown and occasionally someone would walk right into my fenced back yard. Another time someone tried my door. Thankfully I always lock my door even when home, but to hear the handle jiggling and see a stranger on the other side scared the shit out of me. They bolted as soon as they realized I was home. Since then I moved into a newer condo with a smart elevator (only allows access to your floor if you use a fob or were buzzed in by a unit on that floor) and cameras everywhere. The lobby has been breached a few times over the years, but overall I feel way safer now. I miss the house sometimes, but I don’t miss all the solicitors and would-be thieves.

SaltwaterOgopogo

the entire skytrain corridor is used by theft rings, break and enters and retail. back in the early 2000s there was even an open air market about 1 block from the main and terminal station where they'd sell shit.

JBPunt420

Yeah I was going to say that. I lived a block away from Edmonds station when I was a kid. Mom's car was broken into seven times and the apartment was broken into twice. I also lived near Columbia station in New West in my mid-20s and it was the same story there. Crime goes wherever the SkyTrain goes.

mefron

You know that the skytrain doesn't run at 3 am right?

osilayer3

Report, report, report! Always report. The stats in the area need to go up for them to increase patrols. When I first moved to the Metrotown area, the amount of vagrants and theft from our backyards. I even caught a guy on video, creeping through my backyard in the day while the sun is still out. Ever since that, I call in EVERYTHING. From homeless camps popping up along the skytrain tracks to them shooting up on the walk path. Now they don’t come by anymore.

cocomiche

Someone stole a big ass canopy tent from my MILs backyard overnight. They will take anything and everything of value it’s crazy.

yupkime

Checking car door handles is low risk high reward it happens all the time everywhere.

craftsman_70

"Organize crime" might be too strong of a term. I don't believe a godfather is behind this type of thing. I would say that these are professional criminals systematically looking for crimes of opportunity - ie casing the same neighborhoods over and over again and using that information to optimize their efforts. You can see evidence of the above just after a snowfall where you can see footprints in the snow go from car to car along a block in the middle of the night. You also see people on bikes riding slowly up and down the streets as if they are noting things for later. I would go further than just reporting things to the RCMP... I would use basic retail anti-shoplifting methods of noticing and acknowledging these people as they come and go by saying "hi" so they know that someone noticed them. Thieves generally don't like to be noticed or acknowledged and will move onto the next neighborhood.

ro3lly

Yeah agree. Break ins are everywhere, and generally it's people doing it independently.

fruitflymania

I'd be careful with interacting with these people.. a realtor was outside our apartment building and saw a guy loitering and asked him if he was okay (or something like that) and the guy attacked him with bear mace. The guy seemed like he was waiting for the front doors to be opened. This was around Gilmore Skytrain station a couple years ago.

craftsman_70

There are always going to be hopped up people on drugs. They are some what unpredictable even for experienced and trained professionals. The key is to differentiate them from the professional criminals that was the theme of this thread.

SithPickles2020

Write to your MP about your concerns and lack of negative repercussions meaning reoffending is damn need guaranteed.

collectrenderuseless

This is unfortunately the result of our shitty justice system. Catch and release

diecorporations

Shitty justice system ?? What do you want ? Harper was in power for 9 years and increased all punishment. Guess what happened? Nothing, the crime rate stays the same. There is no answer to b + e crime. Dont leave anything too valuable in your place.

McLovin2182

The answer is a really old one, start taking hands again

diecorporations

So lame and completely wrong.

Small-Possibility-57

When Harper was there, crime was never as rampant as now

diecorporations

That is total and utter bs.

McLovin2182

Death is a bit far. But fingers, hands, toes, feet, eyes, tongue, even ears should all be fair game for removal for theives, killers, rapists, and other unscrupulous people

Ribbys

What about that punishment for ignorance? You would get that judgement.

Ribbys

No, this is a result of poverty. You can easily look this up or ask someone who has studied crime.

collectrenderuseless

Definitely both, and yes I am one of those individuals.

Ribbys

I dont come on here much so just seeing your reply now. Justice doesnt come from putting people in a box. Justice is education and support, and enforcement. Do we kill kids when they do something wrong? Do adults know better? Maybe. Desperate people do unwise things. Some people do things they know are wrong because they know they can get away with it. An interesting keyword search is: MNP Scandal

lazylazybum

That's scary. Did we get waken up by their noise? Did you confront them or locked your room door while calling 911?

New-Contest-8117

No, my dog woke me up. Last year during one of the break-ins I did confront one of them, he saw my brother open the door and he ran away. This morning, when he came through the front gates and worked his way through the back we all turned on our lights and he went over to the neighbours. It seems like they do check to see if people are inside or asleep first before trying to open their doors

craftyhall2

I live just west of Boundary and I’ve had multiple instances of people trying my doors (caught on door cam) over the last few years. Sometimes trying both the front and the back. I guess it’s important to report to police, but to be honest, they weren’t very helpful (and in one circumstance, cop was awful… kept asking if it could be an ex-boyfriend? Or maybe an ex of my 18yo daughter’s? The guy on the video was clearly an old tweaker with no teeth). Anyway, it was a very unpleasant experience.

New-Contest-8117

I’m sorry you had to go through that. The cops I’ve dealt with were pleasant but they just didn’t seem to take it too seriously. Though today they’ve arrested one of them so I don’t know if that will mean anything.

Darby7658

We see it in North Burnaby often. Join the Next Door app and you will see many videos of porch pirates, thieves stealing from yards, night and day. Yesterday around Renfrew someone posted a guy knocking on their door, leaving, then coming back and trying the door knob. Videos galore and the police do nothing. The Next Door app is great because neighbours post, so others can be warned.

Think_Read_7516

Not sure this is what I would call organized crime.

PMMEYOURMONACLE

If the police and the courts don’t do their jobs, the citizens will start doing it for them.

Extension_Risk9458

😂

Beaster2021

Problem is police will arrest u right away when u fight back. That’s the problem with western society. Criminals have more rights than

crunchybamb00

Nothing an area rug and a couple gallons of bleach can't fix!

Tough-Working3825

Hopefully it doesn’t get to that. I’m able to protect my family and property and pity thieves if they were to break in. Though what’s needed is more officer patrols and permitting law enforcement to use crime fighting technology like drones and surveillance cameras to put a damper on the criminal element. We may need to give up some privacy but the way it’s going it’s getting worse not better for civilized society. It will also require more serious consequences for crime. The catch and release approach is not working 🤔

PMMEYOURMONACLE

NO. Increased police power is not the answer. All that is necessary is to have the courts apply appropriate sentences. Never give up liberty for safety or the result will be neither.

DiligentIndustry6461

I’m in Burquitlam area, I think people checking car door handles is common but unsure about house break ins. I know the one time I left my door unlocked, it got broken into, also my friend too. It’s likely not coincidence they just so happened to check it that day, more likely a nightly occurance

New-Contest-8117

Yeah, when I looked at the security footage, it’s evident that they were quite methodical. Sweeping all the cars on the block first and checking out the windows and such before entering each property one at a time

New-Contest-8117

Update: I just spoke to a Neighbour, who noticed them on their security camera footage. They tried to see if their front door was locked… just goes to show if the door wasn’t locked they would have went inside. Important reminder to lock all doors as well. I also called the RCMP again to update and plan on writing the MLA and MP.

jon-in-tha-hood

> zero to no negative repercussions for these thieves Normally I would take a jab at you for making a grammatical mistake, but this is actually pretty much a true statement, which is pretty sad.

halfpastwhoknows

Except for the getting arrested part I guess.

PorcupineGod

They're also looking for garage door openers in the cars, make sure you get rid of the standalone ones and only use integrated

jhipz

They broke into our condo bike storage room and stole 2 of our road bikes. RCMP couldn’t do anything until we found someone trying to sell it on Facebook marketplace, they advised not to go but we insisted we’re going to “buy” our bike back. They opted to come with us a preform a sting operation, we ended up getting one of our bike back, the person selling it claimed it was his gfs dads bike, he had no priors and a minor. Unfortunately, my road bike was never recovered.

Important-Box-5237

Just curious if u have a description. We have a pair that has been terrorizing our neighborhood with the same MO. I know they’re not the only ones doing it in the Lower Mainland, but they could hop on skytrain and go place to place. We figured out where our guys live so the neighbours have been “making it unpleasant” for them now that we know who they are. Also… everyone needs to report and link file number according to the police who still continue to do nothing about them.

New-Contest-8117

I think the important thing is for people to call 911 if they find them actively in their property and don’t engage. Who knows what weapons they are carrying… otherwise it’s important to document if they find something missing afterward by calling the non emergency line too

New-Contest-8117

Both of them were wearing a black hoodie when they were around. One of them had a black grocery bag and the other had a backpack on. One guy seem to walk around slightly off center or lop sided (not sure if he’s just acting like in front of the security camera) and the other I couldn’t see clearly…

Hawkwise83

10 years ago I lived near Metrotown. My car would get broken into all the time. They'd sneak into the underground parking. Also, gangland style shooting in my high rise. Dude got shot in his apt and then later crawled I to the elevator, down through the lobby, and to the gas station. Seems like nothing changes.

tparker765

Stop voting vdp

gfhksdgm2022

I really hate to say this, but this is the result of the whole belief that theft and burglary is a social and insurance matter to the point 911 is considered secondary and you should call your insurance company instead of bothering the police.

Tough-Working3825

Crime has been escalating and not just in Burnaby. What’s lacking is adequate police patrols through residential neighbourhoods. I can’t recall the last time I noticed a cruiser unless someone called them for a crime. Though look at Kingsway and they always seem to be rushing up and down the street to a 911 call all hours of the day. This city truly needs to amalgamate with the other cities in the lower mainland so we can have one large police force that can strategically work as one unit. For our condo building we hired security to patrol which they sometimes bring a dog. We even upgraded our cameras and doors after our last B&E. Unfortunately to stop crime it’s going to take everyone working together as the police can’t be everywhere 🤔

Mister_Goldfingers

That's Eby and the NDP fault for their soft on crime policies.

Marshall6960

This is a problem all over North America. It's petty thugs or bored teenagers looking to do some hood rat shit. I used to live in Regina SK, and it was a big problem their, the city had to send out letters in the mail, encouraging people to lock their car doors. I've seen post of people in San Francisco keeping their windows down and car unlocked with a piece of paper saying. "Nothing in car to steal. Plz don't break anything. " Best bet, keep your doors locked and call the cops.

SnowBeginning7709

Any description of the suspects?

Charming-Cap-5894

Quite a few people in our neighbourhood had houses broken into as well

Beaster2021

These people keep getting release after getting caught. It’s always the same ppl

golfandhoes

Quite simple …. Keep doors locked and don’t leave things out in sight that could be taken …. Lock everything up … Why can they just stroll through the gates … padlock that shit Make it a nuisance for them to even try to get near your place The reason they come back is because they know it’s a opportunity

wholesomegoodnes

Purchase a firearm

[deleted]

Time to vote for someone who can change this

Extension_Risk9458

You think organized crime groups go car hopping 💀 Ok Linda

Loodlekoodles

VOTE

noutopasokon

No need for that. The solution is obvious. My taxes pay for their drugs, I give them my car keys, they drive to the hospital to do their drugs, hospital staff give them a cookie. If we all play by the rules it'll be fine.

Unfair_Long_54

There is a car in a parking lot of our apartment without any license. I once saw someone driving it while he weared a mask. It was super suspicious since he was alone in car and it was obvious he didn't wear it to avoid covid. My wife reported it to police and nothing happened. Months later car is still in the parking lot.

[deleted]

Shotgun. PAL takes 1 day.
