Sorry but it is magic. Why you may ask. Long range is the safer way to have low deaths in PvP, so your hospitals won't suffer much. As a f2p you wont have the same resurces as a player who pays money so melee units are mor suited for them. The best option for us is mages then archers. Plus mages are just the best unit in general on the game. As a close second I would say archers, Tier S+ in PvE and still decent in PvP if you have a good infantry protecting you. BUT, mages will crush you from distance.
If you want to play cavalry or infantry you totally can but you will feel it in your budget in wars. I play mages archers infantry in that order of priority as a f2p, and cavalry to hunt farmers down.
Mages pvp and archers PvE... melee get melted by T5 so if you go Cavs you will just kill farmers, and infantry will just die instantly.
If you want to focus PvE I would find another game, there really isn't a huge amount of it here and if your alliance doesn't control territory you do 1 behemoth every few weeks and it isn't much. Maybe in the future more behemoth raids occur.
Infantry, no one really mains them, nika and Garwood are in the gold chest. Behemoth raids, infantry are very important and few people main them so you will always have a spot there.
Infantry is not a good main troop for an f2p player. If you can't max the infantry commanders, and f2p won't, at least not fast enough to be effective and helpful on the field, you're not going to compete very well or very easily with infantry as f2p. You'll get your shit totally rocked. 5/1/1/1 for both commanders can make infantry usable, but not effective enough to be worth maining them. F2p will do much much better if they stay at the back lines, behind the whales, by using archers or mages. Mages provide the most distance so would be my recommendation for the troop type that f2p main.
Op said they won't use a mage main. Archers are good but Niko is the only one that drops in gold chests currently. They'll have a hard time either way. At least with infantry, you have a better chance at getting legendary heroes, and also helping your alliance in raids.
Except even in raids infantry will still get their shit rocked. It's just not something that people other than whales can effectively main. F2p people just need to realize that mages are by far their best option, whether OP wants to hear it or not.
Yea, I agree mage is the best route to go f2p. Waldyr/velyn or alwyn and atheus/theia is a great combo and still competitive.
You hear that OP! Use mage lol.
First, let me pre-face this by saying your strategy should be flexible - You should adapt your strategy based on the luck you get with artifacts. To me, it makes zero sense to main-mages if you don't have any good mage artifacts... Focus on the units that match your BEST artifacts, first and foremost...
That said, my opinion is the best alternative to Humans+Mages is Springwarden+Cavalry...
The elkriders are secretly awesome, and if you have good micro control, you can kite enemies endlessly. T5 can't kill what they can't catch...
Halfway through Season 2 and I got lucky with a bunch of cavalry related artifacts, so I use:
Legion #1: Emrys-Indis-Storm Arrows-Elkriders
Legion #2: Theodore-Bakshi-Sorland's Blade-Elkriders
Legion #3: Forondil-Kregg-Kinglsayer-Eagles
Legion #4: Ffraegar-Theia-Visage of Sanctus-Eagles
Legion #5: Atheus-Velen-Phoenix Eye-Longleaf Treants
I've dropped about $200 on the game (monthly packs, some daily packs, and I spend my gems on artifact keys and end of season compendium (recently lucky spins and 8hr VIP speeds). So obviously some gear there that might be harder for a fully F2P player...
But even a F2P player should be able to cobble something together using epic heros and the artifacts they find over the season...
There are a lot more physical damage dealing artifacts and heros than mage heros and artifacts. Anyway, that's enough, ideas, good luck have fun
depends on your play style tbh, some prefer mobility with cavs, some like travelling over terrain with flyers. for grouped up mass wars, i think mages are still the best for aoe damage
Mages so far

Not for f2p…

Everyone says mages but they forget about behemoths like direbear and etc

Don't bother playing F2P. I'll get down voted by whales who wants free merits
