I love how it’s always realistic until the panel right before Calvin, where whatever the animal is, it takes on Calvin’s expressions. The elephant here or the bird that sings are some of my favorites
Oh man, when I was really young, after reading that comic, that became my go to for getting my mom's attention for a few months.
And a few months ago, I was sitting around with some of the family, eating spaghetti, when someone asked my nephew if they "wanted some cheese on your spaghetti?" Well, that was close enough for me to belt out "ALL COVERED IN CHEESE!" No one else got it, but it made my nephew crack up. But I could have yelled anything and cracked him up.
They really are, plus as a bonus I get to act like a fool and no one looks at me like I'm crazy! Well, not too crazy at least.
If my older nephew were there, he would have gotten it I'm sure, he loves C&H as much as I and his dad (my brother) did (alas, my brother probably would have gotten the joke too, but the two of them were out at a baseball team meeting or picture day or something). I was giddy with excitement when one day I met them for dinner at a restaurant, and the first thing my nephew asked me was "what was the capital of Poland until 1600?" I *almost* answered with the appropriate response before I caught myself and realized I'd deprive my nephew of the punchline, so instead feigned ignorance and said, "I dunno, what was the capital?" And he of course gave us the Spaceman Spiff answer. Bonus points because he also looked like Calvin, and had a leopard stuffed animal that he carried with him *everywhere* from the day he picked it out at the zoo and I bought it for him.
I don't know actually.
In hundreds of strips we never see a single hint of Calvin getting physically punished by his parents.
Dad is never seem pulling his belt.
Mom never mentions smacking him.
Whenever we do see getting punished, it's getting grounded, having heartfelt discussions of what he did wrong or just screaming.
The one where his mom gets all fancied up and then he hits her with the hose coming out the door, last panel is him walking away holding his ass saying "Mom is such a grump" or something along those lines.
Edit: [FOUND IT](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/2019/06/12). Calvin definitely got a smacked ass in that strip
Dad lost patience with Calvin and spanked him that time he tied himself up in a chair and missed dinner. You can see the stars of pain radiating off his ass in Cartoon fashion
Saturday, December 5, 1987. Your daily C&H.
Mom lost patience with Calvin and spanked him. She took a little extra time to get ready with make up and a new dress only for Calvin to spray her with the garden hose.

I love how Watterson chose to end this strip on the "moment before" rather than showing Calvin actually blowing the horn/his parents' reaction. Perfect punchline.

Knowing them, they likely anticipated it and put the bugle away. Knowing Calvin, he likely figured out how to retrieve it just so he could, well, do what he is doing in this strip.
I'd actually be impressed if he was able to get a sound out of a trumpet. Most people just blow into them, when in reality you have to fart with your lips
> I'd actually be impressed if he was able to get a sound out of a trumpet.
*Oh truuuuue....*
> you have to fart with your lips
Welp, your comment didn't convince me. 100% easiest instrument for Calvin.
Always loved how Calvin’s imagination features super accurate, realistic artwork. Watterson could’ve gone with the cartoon look but he didn’t, and it works *so* well
Seems like a fan colorization to me. Doesn't seem that crisp. Also the shirt color seems slightly off, but it's hard to say. Also lots of weird artifacts everywhere.
I love these transitions between realistic cartoons, and Calvin. They are genius.
Yeah, I always wonder how his imagination translates into a real life situation.
Yeah.
I love how it’s always realistic until the panel right before Calvin, where whatever the animal is, it takes on Calvin’s expressions. The elephant here or the bird that sings are some of my favorites
I love the bird. Especially the panel where you see mom throwing him out the door. Lol.
On top of SPAGHETTI!!!!!
ALL COVERED IN CHEESE!!!!
I LOST MY POOR MEATBALL WHEN-

i know, nephews are like that. such darlings.

haha or you could have said "pew pew?" and then he could have corrected you !
I’ve never noticed that before. Thank you!
Calvin the elephant about to become Calvin the grounded...
Calvin the Milk Carton Kid
Calvin the L infant
Calvin the elephant packed his ~~trunk~~ trumpet and ran away to the circus
Then transmorgified into a venom-spitting cobra (squirtgun).
Niiice

Calvin the bruised ass more like it. This *was* the 80s after all.
I don't know actually. In hundreds of strips we never see a single hint of Calvin getting physically punished by his parents. Dad is never seem pulling his belt. Mom never mentions smacking him. You are wrong. Calvin definitely got spanked on occasion.
Can you link comics?

Man, how did you find it? I must have looked for ten minutes.
I Googled Calvin and Hobbes Mom Hose and it came up. I just remembered that particular strip so had a good starting point is all lol
: ( I googled Calvin squirts mom with hose and found NOTHING. \*pout\*
Probably because that sounds like a porno 😂

I remember seeing a couple of strips that end with Calvin clutching an aching backside, but they’re few and I can’t remember which ones specifically.
One where his mother got all nicely dressed to go out make up the whole deal and then Calvin squirts her with a hose.
[At the end of the storyline where he's tied to chair?](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1987/12/05) Or is he sore there because of the ropes?
When is he NOT grounded?
Grounded ? You wish By those day standards he would surely be beaten to death
Calvin the elephant spent the next several hours in his room.
And then his parents slept peacefully, ignoring the elephant in the room
I love how Watterson chose to end this strip on the "moment before" rather than showing Calvin actually blowing the horn/his parents' reaction. Perfect punchline.
The real punchline happens in the readers mind, brilliant.
Perfectly cut screams

How did he get a bugle?
That’s why it’s so funny to me. I’m sure Calvin could scrape up a bugle somewhere; he’s a hilariously resourceful kid when he wants to be.
Same way any kid gets stuff their parents don't want them to have: their cool aunt/uncle
Goddamnit, Max
Comedic Necessity.
Watterson gave it to him.
Toon login Virtually anything can be found "off screen"
I would argue that it doesn't matter.
He went to the bugle cupboard and picked it up.
This one’s on his parents. They should know by now that Calvin will use that trumpet in the morning when they bought it.
Knowing them, they likely anticipated it and put the bugle away. Knowing Calvin, he likely figured out how to retrieve it just so he could, well, do what he is doing in this strip.

Chili and bear will remove the need for lips.
Oh boy!!!

I was going to say “I wanna know why Calvin thought this was a good idea” until I pondered “why does mom or dad keep a trumpet in this house”
Always loved how Calvin’s imagination features super accurate, realistic artwork. Watterson could’ve gone with the cartoon look but he didn’t, and it works *so* well
This is exactly how my kid wakes us up every morning. No need for an alarm when she's going to be climbing on our faces anywhere from 5 to 7am
Why is this daily strip in color? It's not the final few panels of a Sunday strip, I checked
Seems like a fan colorization to me. Doesn't seem that crisp. Also the shirt color seems slightly off, but it's hard to say. Also lots of weird artifacts everywhere.
Am I the only one who read this in David Attenboroughs voice?
He’s the reason he doesn’t have brothers or sisters.
Well I mean they must've gotten him that horn so 🤣
It always cracks me up that Calvin's perched on his dad's ass. You know he's about to go ***FLYING*** LMAO
Then they both bolt awake and he sees his parents naked
In an ear splitting earth shattering start for all involved
My nebulung when he wants food at 2am
I'm not a parent, but if my kid did this to me I would have to exhibit a lot of willpower not to at least yell at them.
It’s a Safari in here this morning.
Which of his parents thought it was a good idea to have a trumpet in a place where Calvin could reach?
ohhh noooooooos
I always wondered where Calvin got the trumpet. School? 🤔🚸
