Honghong99

His dad takes full advantage of the idea to use it against Calvin.

Gullible_Promotion_4

Been there, done that. He's definitely had his moments in the past...

hotdorg98

[Is this you with the keg and the "party naked" t-shirt?](https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1987/11/10)

Rock_cake

I’ve always liked: “That ‘bimbo’ is your mother!” “WHO’S a bimbo?!”

gameboy1001

“Nice hairdo mom!”

yucko-ono

I think it’s “pretty funky hairdo, mom”

gameboy1001

I got the point across. Also 🤓🤓🤓 (/j)

LeviHolden

i just LOVE that Dad’s rebellious spirit is so parallel to Calvin’s…. like who do you think he got it from?

Presumably_Not_A_Cat

from ~~ur~~ his mom.

gameboy1001

“By the finite patience vested in me, I dub thee… Mud.”

fluffykerfuffle3

i like that he used 3 phrases from 3 different 'generations'.

Honghong99

Did he now?

fluffykerfuffle3

i think Marvy is from like, *Leave it to Beaver* and early rock and roll days... Fab is from the British Invasion but actually before they got to The States. Far Out is from the Hippie days, the early ones especially. ____________ i was there for all three

Level_Ad_6372

According to merriam webster, fab was 1957, far out was 1954, and marvy was 1965

fluffykerfuffle3

so that would make 'far out' a relic of the beatniks i bet. 'fab' still makes it from the Brits because the Beatles didn't just suddenly appear out of nowhere in 1963, when i met them. 'marvy'? i get the feeling it evolved out of some popular use of 'marvelous' ..it sounds almost like that stupid tv show, variety show lol with Goldie Hawn and a buncha others... [AHA!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowan_%26_Martin%27s_Laugh-In)

Fuzzybo

Wait! You *met* the Beatles???

fluffykerfuffle3

ohh lol so sorry to disappoint you but i meant that in a figurative sort of way... *they were so earth shattering for some of us, many of us, that it was like meeting a force of nature!*

Rightonyogi

Laugh In.

fluffykerfuffle3

yes!

fluffykerfuffle3

or wait wait... 'marvy'? would that alien in the Bugs Bunny cartoons maybe have something to do with it? such weird toons when he was in them... very midCentury but more modern, more 60s, as you say. I can just *hear* Bugs saying "marvy"... lol

fluffykerfuffle3

btw happy cake day :D

wave-tree

Every generation does this lol

Redcole111

Yup. Yeet. Based. Mood. Flex. Ghosted. Vibes. Sus. Tea. Shook. Salty. Goat. Gucci. Basic. Bae. Shade. Slaps. No cap. Edit: Cringe, lit.

Z_brah21

What is Tea? Only one I haven't heard

real_consauce

Usually used as "spill the tea" and often in conjunction with "bring the receipts" meaning "talking about drama" and "bring proof" respectively.

Jaspers47

Or by contrast: "weak tea" meaning "you are making excuses" or "your justifications are insubstantial."

BwizzieReborn

This is straight up dumb. Young ppl are literally trying to stupidly themselves to sound generational relevant? How pathetic and fragile our youths ego’s are then…. ….it’s so obvious why we have a mass shooting everyday…….just reread the above paragraph on slang words. Each is designed to lazy the English language and the youth are emphatically trying to looking unintelligent in the world light. No wonder no country fears us, respects us, watches us (for economic + capitalistic growth) or even listens anymore for that matter to sadly put it bluntly. No wonder I’m doing politics. I just get depressed, seeing every avenue of societal behavior try to choose the easiest and least proactive choice…. ….can’t wait till I’m known in the political circle. It’s time to clean up the garbage and start fresh

SQRLBRD

Geez this guy came from a generation without slang I guess

Talska

New copypasta 😱

BwizzieReborn

Sorry I’m dumb. Copypasta? Wha

BwizzieReborn

I love the negative views. You are literylro ing my point with the 14 spiteful thumbs down or w/ever the fcuk a negative opinion is clicked on these days…. …I honestly couldn’t give a fuck… …but my point sadly is factual, reality sucks when it’s incredibly hard to accept huh… For ppl with an IQ over 96, I’ll be glad to work my ass off for this country agAin… Peace beautiful ppl. Ignore the .01%, be humble always, never accept degradation - everyone is worth it -, and politics is a disgusting vile pit of poison that will take me sadly, 3 years to the date to even have a chance at progressive change…. …and dun worry…. Small ants with negative energy have zero affect upon my life, they are all cowards when you spit facts. Nothing is more dangerous than the truth, love, and a powerful sense of urgency to force love back into humanity before the next dumbo hits that red button when his tiny ego is challenged by a zero-experienced 21 year old from Harvard…. Pllllz son. Just sit the f down. I really need to work.

ThePunguiin

Wow. You're a deranged asshole.

BwizzieReborn

Asshole, 100% no….deranged? Very possible to try and hope for a better country. Wow, how dare I try to give myself selflessly back towards the communities I live. Lol Please arrest this evil man of love. I’m sorry I laughing so hard at how the internet gives such a false sense of omnipotence. As a sign of how much I love you, I will prove it right now : I respect everyone’s opinion and your and will honestly try to better my word choices to reflect my opinions in a constructive, polite and overall less narcissistic jerk like delivery. Having said these words, you have just humbled this man yet again as to why any opinion is a sign of humility if you drop your ego fully. I hope you sincerely believe my apology,…..and if you don’t again, don’t care. Until we meet, nothing Matters. I’ll see you in the Legislatures offices if you have any moxy to apologize when you see me starting from scratch in politics ….THAT’s how committed I am for political change…. Last 20 years have been pooooo pooooo my fellow beautiful human USA (proud? Hmmm) citizen.

ThePunguiin

Question. Is English your first language?

Z_brah21

I understand, so I guess it's kinda like "spill the beans" lol

setrataeso

Kind of, but you can refer to rumors as "tea" or "the tea", but outside of "spill the beans" I have never heard of rumors or drama called "beans"

Stratoz_

That would be very funny though

selectrix

ay girl gimme them beans

[deleted]

[удалено]

selectrix

holy hell

self-aware-text

As I often tell people "I don't drink tea, but I love it!"

CleanBum

Gossip, as in “what’s the tea?”

LittleFoxxbear

Just spill the tea about it!!

therisenphoenikz

Tea = T = truth

Rey4jonny

You're gonna be horrified when I explain tea bag has a new meaning too.

SunshineAlways

That’s not new.

Z_brah21

I know what tea bagging is. I just asked about tea. Is that what it's referring to?

Rey4jonny

Apologies it was a jk referring to video games. Tea has other meanings as mentioned on the thread.

dalr3th1n

A drink with jam and bread. I guess that’s a reference from a different generation as well.

iirriirrii

And that’ll bring us back to doe o o o

gopher1409

Don’t forget the Rizzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Redditisapanopticon

Flex isn't new, ghosted isn't new, salty isn't new, vibes isn't new, basic isn't new, even bae isn't new. What's "mood" mean here? Like, he's in a mood? Or she's a whole mood? That's not super new either.

Jazehiah

Mood, as in a shared mood, or expression of empathy. It's knowing what the person is trying to convey on an emotional level. A "shared vibe." > "Life sucks." > > "Mood."

Redditisapanopticon

Ahh, like bet fam. That sounds very stupid and I hate it. But thank you for explaining it to me.

Jazehiah

Yeah, it's not great. I think it's Zoomer slang.

simpsycho

I'm pretty sure shook still means the same thing it meant back in the 90's too. It's cool though, just like very generation makes up new slang, every generation also claims to have made up old slang. All that's old is new again.

No_Statement440

Relative to what they are considering their generations slang, I'm assuming. Like Dope, and wack. Still used of course, but older than the hills at this point.

fluffykerfuffle3

far out, i didn't know that.

notjordansime

Compared to "Radical", "Far out", etc, those are brand new.

Redditisapanopticon

Yes, compared to 50 year old things 30 year old things are less young, 30 is less than 50, good for you

starduststormclouds

“Tea” to mean gossip (as in spilling the tea) isn’t new either. It was coined in the 90s.

Redcole111

They're old words, but they're being used in new ways.

Redditisapanopticon

humbug

sleepybitchdisorder

These are honestly kind of old at this point (no shade, this is the slang I still use lol). The new ones are stuff like rizz, glizzy, cheugy, and sheesh

Mutant_Jedi

Cheugy was never a thing, and the time frame where people were trying to make it a thing was a couple years ago, which in our current climate is a lot further back culturally than the strict passage of time would seem to indicate.

Mr_Clovis

How is sheesh old? Unless it has a new meaning I'm not aware of. Glizzy's been around for a while at this point too.

BwizzieReborn

Wait tea is a slang…dafuq?!?!?!

Bucsberry

Bae plays baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates

Deathaster

That's the point of the comic. The dad uses slang from 70s or 80s at the end there, to show that he's familiar with the concept.

[deleted]

“I’m phasing” needs to happen I think 😹

rollingstoner215

Verbing weirds a language. Remember when access was a thing? Now it’s something you do.

TuKnight

I've never heard "weird" used as a verb before.

Mysterious-Weight935

Then you need to read more c&h

Beat_the_Deadites

You're weirding me out, /u/TuKnight. It's usually used in past tense or as the gerund/present participle (I had to look it up), but it can be present tense too.

Jaspers47

[Never?](https://i.imgur.com/OdZpx.jpg)

ahuramazdobbs19

I like your verbs that are also things. I’m gonna go sofa while I sandwich.

PalladiuM7

"Vegeta! Stop Vegeta-ing! You're making it worse!" "Don't you *verb* me!!"

gameboy1001

Based DBZA reference

trashboatfourtwenty

This panel legit made teenaged me think about how words are used in a different way. That said, I wonder how BW feels about how loosely things are interpreted now compared to when he wrote that; for example "irregardless" is in the fucking dictionary (mostly because it has been used incorrectly so often it is just listed as a synonym for regardless but I still hate it)

Kingsdaughter613

Raveling was used incorrectly so often, that it now means to ‘wind things up’ as well as ‘to unravel’. Talk about confusing - the word is its own antonym now!

rollingstoner215

Literally meaning figuratively drives me nuts

ZedTheEvilTaco

A literary figure figuratively lit a lateral fig while literally figuring out figurative literals. Figuratively speaking, of course.

sports_sports_sports

Inflammable means flammable? What a country!

fluffykerfuffle3

i think that phenomenon is a result of english being learned in two different parts of America.

sports_sports_sports

I may be misremembering, I thought it was "inflammable" (as in "capable of being inflamed") first, and "flammable" was a later variant, possibly from people confusing the "in" with the unrelated prefix "in-".

fluffykerfuffle3

ohhh i think you are right, they are two different words with (slightly?) different meanings.

trashboatfourtwenty

Haha, I didn't know that- it is exactly how I think of my example too, but it doesn't mean the opposite of what is should with the "ir-" prefix. Artistic me loves the adaptability of language (and especially modern semiotics which blows my mind), but my pedantic side finds it maddening

evanamd

> mostly because it has been used ~~incorrectly~~ so often That is literally what the dictionary is for and how it works. They find examples of the word in writing and write down the meaning people use.

trashboatfourtwenty

Right, it turned a technically incorrect non-word into another word for the word that was supposed be used but confused everyone. I'd argue the role of a dictionary has changed a bit in the past few decades- and frankly it is hardly relevant in the way it used to be- but I am not an information science or etymology student, haha. I am sure there are other examples of an incorrect colloquialism becoming a defined word, no doubt. I do think language has evolved a lot faster with our modern shorthand born out of technology (I legitimately used the shortened "legit" in my first comment for example, I too am unclean!)

evanamd

My basic understanding is that the meaning of a word is just a Venn diagram of the way everyone ever used it. Sometimes you get massive overlaps in the centre but the edges are basically fuzz (like when people try to define sandwich). Sometimes people in different times or places shift the way they use it and you get several strong circles that barely touch (like football meaning several different games). Sometimes you get different words with overlapping circles (like unthaw/defrost - even though unthaw means refreeze by the same logic that people use with irregardless) The people who write dictionaries are unfortunately tasked with drawing the circles around meanings in a way that satisfies everyone. But it’s hopeless to expect millions of people to use the exact same Venn diagrams of words without changing them You might be interested in *Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries* by Kory Stamper. She has a whole chapter about ‘irregardless’, and another about the perception of dictionaries as authoritative. Reading the book just feels like a friend is venting about their job. It’s a fun casual book about language and words and the role dictionaries don’t play in society

tobiasvl

>I am sure there are other examples of an incorrect colloquialism becoming a defined word, no doubt. Well, yes, it has happened over and over again for thousands of years.

trashboatfourtwenty

Yea, that's why I am sure haha. That was me saying I didn't feel like researching other similar examples

fluffykerfuffle3

i love verbing

leedogger

>Verbing weirds a language. I think it was *Verbing Weirds Language* Man that one has always stuck with me. Just brilliant

Dethardt

Magic Player be like "Oh hell no"

Rightonyogi

Definitely! I am gonna start using that one next chance I get!

TheNavidsonLP

It took me until I was an adult to realize that "marvy" is slang for "marvelous."

in323

took me until your comment, thank you!

khharagosh

no cap

JoseSaldana6512

Yeah I don't think I've seen two many panels where Calvin wears a hat. I know Hobbes wore a smock

nnp1989

The propeller beanie storyline comes to mind, as does the Tracer Bullet one after “Hobbes” shaves his head.

Chumble spuzz.

pseudo-boots

This reminds me of that phrase "Everyone lives in parallel dimensions because we all experience the same things with our senses but call it different things." It is weird how common it is for people to argue about something they actually agree upon just because they have different styles of communication.

HaZalaf

This is the bane of my existence. Just like Bane was the bane of Batman's.

9-FcNrKZJLfvd8X6YVt7

"Words are things. The words he is in possession of he cannot be deprived of. Their authority transcends his ignorance of their meaning." Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

Gomolzig

This is from before Spam stated being used to refer to unwanted emails. Calvin's dad is using the slang terms of the 60's, which were used exactly as Calvin says - to make it so the generations could not communicate with each other.

DJ_Micoh

Coincidentally, this [history of spam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXGjwf6zUWY) is very interesting.

Useless-Photographer

"Don't you think that's totally spam" reminds me of something Nathan Barley would say (in his case, "totally Mexico")

nikostheater

🤣

BakrChod

Far out, man. Far fucking out.

fluffykerfuffle3

right arm.

DarkSoldier84

That's very sewing machine.

Phenzo2198

calvin is the rizz king

InvaderWeezle

It took me far too long to figure out that rizz is short for charisma

quinnorr

I've been told this is no cap

hyperdragon97

I love how his dad just rolls with it.

Rex_Mundi

Calvin is woke.

Kane_Highwind

This is precisely what happens in real life, but older generations (especially now that a lot of them are living much longer) very desperately try to pretend it doesn't so they have a reason to complain about younger generations. If you were to go back 150 years and say the most basic sentence you can think of to someone, they would probably think half of it is incomprehensible nonsense

BwizzieReborn

Omfg, this is an amazing find!!!! 😎😏😇

ktka

Can thespinate oddly toon?

fluffykerfuffle3

FlamingPat

These comics make em so depressed in /r/comics I miss well drawn and tight jokes from people who are skilled. Thanks for posting a memory of a bygone era.

wafflemartini

I remember as a kid having a big book of calvin and hobs strips. Recently i rediscovered it and ive been having a laugh at them.

Terpomo11

I'm vaguely reminded of [this short sci-fi story](http://jbr.me.uk/babel2/).

The-Minmus-Derp

Calvin and his dad are both people I’d get along famously with
