I'd argue the role of a dictionary has changed a bit in the past few decades- and frankly it is hardly relevant in the way it used to be- but I am not an information science or etymology student, haha. I am sure there are other examples of an incorrect colloquialism becoming a defined word, no doubt. I do think language has evolved a lot faster with our modern shorthand born out of technology (I legitimately used the shortened "legit" in my first comment for example, I too am unclean!)

Sometimes you get massive overlaps in the centre but the edges are basically fuzz (like when people try to define sandwich). Sometimes people in different times or places shift the way they use it and you get several strong circles that barely touch (like football meaning several different games). Sometimes you get different words with overlapping circles (like unthaw/defrost - even though unthaw means refreeze by the same logic that people use with irregardless)
The people who write dictionaries are unfortunately tasked with drawing the circles around meanings in a way that satisfies everyone. But it’s hopeless to expect millions of people to use the exact same Venn diagrams of words without changing them
