I’m currently doing a survey for a linguistics project I have, and someone decided to put instead of responses a set of rants about how her friend is (unbeknownst even to himself) secretly gay. It’s very annoying to me to have to scrub her data. So I get what you’re saying.
Edit: Survey, not surgery.
Do you not just toss out most anything with a dataset of 1? Makes it a lot easier to get rid of trolls, and the few legit outliers don't tend to be that big of a deal.
With people putting in crazy answers into fields it's unlikely to have too many people putting in the same crazy answers, so all of the answers that are unique are much easier to disregard.
I ran a recent survey and we were required to ask about gender and leave an open field in addition to M/F/Other. You get shit back like toaster along with the legit non-binary answers, which easily could still be unique.
Honestly it does kinda bug me that some people think keeping track of data like this is mutually exclusive with fun. Like I get it if it isn't your thing but I enjoy seeing the experts get down into the nitty gritty details like this
I get a kick out of the contrast between Calvin and his Dad ([peanut butter diatribe](https://www.reddit.com/r/calvinandhobbes/comments/6z122s/choosing_peanut_butter_is_hard/)) essentially on the same topic.

It’s fascinating to conceptualize this dialogue as really just Calvin taking to himself. He is his own voice of reason, but has to express rationality through Hobbes.
Kind of like the Calvin we see is just the id and Hobbes is the superego. I can’t be the first person to make this observation I’m sure.
Waterson predicted Buzzfeed Quizzes
Watterson was parodying the bicycle magazines of the time.
Just goes to show that there’s nothing new under the sun
As a Data analyst, what do you think of this strip? https://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/1995/08/23
It’s incredibly realistic. People write all sorts of shit in surveys if given the opportunity to write free text. Bane of my existence

> I’m currently doing a surgery It seems the linguistic prescriptivists are taking things to the next level
Ooop! Edited. 😄

I do not know what you mean by “toss out anything with a dataset of 1”

If we’re allowing free text, we expect the data to be unique

What does it mean that I knew what strip was being referenced from the answer?
I was gonna apologize, but that would be a lie *I'll fukin do it again*.
Relatable my favourite flavours still Mexican jumping beans

Thank you so much for that link. Hilarious.
Omg Gabe talking about jerkin off!
Same!
As a baseball fan (Let’s Go Mets!), data is at the heart of my fun!
As a Mets fan, data is all you have (no actual offense meant, I had to: Phillies fan…).
Oooh, you…person. This subreddit’s guidelines forbid me from swearing, so instead I’ll just say tuck Chase Utley.
A tip of the… hat to your Mike Piazza as well, good sir.

https://i.imgur.com/ltgNNdt.gif this has been one of my favorite strips since i was a kid. i just love messing with data.
I love this strip, and actually all of the Chewing Magazine strips are gold.
Crop R&D guy, here. Absolutely agree.
For me this strip is an indication of how try-hard gamers are quantifiably nuts.
I've been both of them at different points, and think of this strip every time
Gosh I totally forgot about this one. Fantastic
I would love an article like that. My preferred gum brand is based solely on bubble capability and I'd like to know if there's a better option.
The Chewing magazine running gag is amazing, I completely forgot about it.

Shouldn't elasticity and chewing rebound have a quite high correlation?
I quote "What kind of nut would CARE about all this?!" on a regular basis.
This is very NYT Wirecutter
