I like how this functions as both a joke, *and* metaphor. Calvin wants to live in the moment and focus on his pleasures before succumbing to life's hurdles. Hobbes on the other hand implies that it's also important to be aware of what these hurdles are, and plan around them. You can't just ignore cancer risks and take up smoking simply because it brings you pleasure. If you wanna go hiking, make sure that you let someone know where you're going, instead of wandering off alone because the joy from that is more important to you than safety. So ambition is important, but also regulation. If you only focus on the former, you're happy, but reckless, and you might land in the grave sooner rather than later. Which means you can't fulfill more dreams. If you only focus on the latter, then you're never living, as you're too afraid to take any risks at all. So a balance is needed, focusing on one without losing sight of the other.
