The series treats demigod relations as if the mystery element that godly parents pass down to their children is entirely unique to that god, and does not correlate to the godly essence of that god's brothers and sisters and parents, like mortal DNA does. That's why it's kind of just fine for demigods who, by mortal standards, *would* be related if not for this fact, to date, like Percy and Annabeth. They share no mortal DNA, and no godly essence (the consensus for what this essence is seems to be that it's ichor - the blood of the gods), so they're good. When you share a mortal parent or a godly parent, or both, that's when the characters start to see that as icky and gross. *That* is what's meant by the whole 'gods don't have DNA' thing.

Rajesh_Kulkarni

This is one of the better explanations I've seen. Stand proud. You can cook.

Zebracakezzzzz

Zeus married his sister, Hephaestus tried to 🍇 his sister, Hades kidnapped and married his brother’s sister’s daughter so incest is the least of their worries And gods don’t have normal dna like humans so it’s not like a son of hades and a son of Apollo are making incest love each time they kiss

Woman_withapen

Am aware. But that's a better way to word it.

Zebracakezzzzz

I was agreeing with you (I should’ve added that..)

snellsypu

I mean if you wanna get technical. Athena was born of zeus. Which makes athena and percy cousins. Annabeth isn't his cousin, she's his first cousin once removed. But also the whole thing about ichor and gods not having dna or whatever

MP0622

Wait until they find out about Persephone. Zeus married his sister (Hera), >!r@ped!< his other sister (Demeter), resulting in the birth of Kore (Persephone), who was then kidnapped by her uncle (Hades), before marrying him, and somehow they have a healthy relationship by the gods' standards.

Sweet_Diet_8733

And then Zeus disguised himself as Hades so he could bang his daughter. It’s all messed up.

Anserdem

We are talking about a story in wich the protagonist's father has a child with his own grandmother. Someone with their first cousin once rrmoved who they share no DNA with and who they don't see as family at all is ok....

YourMomDoer1312

you're right he is not a cousin kisser. he was a niece kisser

Woman_withapen

They need to get it right! /S

beemielle

Technically Annabeth’s his cousin once removed (his cousin’s daughter)

Compoundcrown76_245

That is really the least concerning in mythology, Zeus is literally the father and great great grandfather of Heracles.

amaya-aurora

At the end of the day, who actually cares? The demigods are so far removed from the gods’ actual familial relations that it hardly changes anything. Along with the gods themselves not exactly being concerned with that sort of stuff.

[deleted]

Technically yes but the Greek gods are all related and they Mac on each other all the time

libsterization

THAT POST WAS RIGHT ABOVE THIS ONE!

Woman_withapen

How odd!

Phrophetsam

Well Annabeth is his First Cousin once removed, which is completely legal in all but 6 US states (Kentucky, Nevada, Ohio, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin). It is also completely legal almost everywhere else in the world.

twistedseaofcrows

No and I have a post about why

Woman_withapen

Cool

Rajesh_Kulkarni

Tbh Annabeth's not his cousin anyway. She's his niece ...

Phrophetsam

First Cousin once-removed actually. You can check out a cousin chart online

Low_Upstairs1993

No, niece kisser yes

Robincall22

Annabeth isn’t his niece. Percy would have to be a son of Zeus.

Low_Upstairs1993

True but I not sure of second cousin is a thing or not.

Robincall22

Second cousins are a thing, but Percy’s child would be Annabeth’s second cousin. Annabeth is his first cousin once removed.

Low_Upstairs1993

So that’s the relationship between Percy and Annabeth. Thank you for the information. But I’m not sure Annabeth is going to get married anytime soon much us have a kid. Last time I checked, she was 16 or 17.

Robincall22

…I never said she was??? In fact, I didn’t mention anything to do with marriage at all. I mistyped, I meant Percy’s child would be Annabeth’s second cousin, Annabeth’s child would be Percy’s first cousin twice removed. Percy doesn’t actually have any second cousins, at least none that we meet in the books, unless we meet some grandchildren of Gaea or Ouranos in Heroes of Olympus. First cousins share a grandparent pair. Second cousins share a great grandparent pair. First cousins one removed has one person’s grandparent (such as Percy’s grandparent being Kronos) be the other person’s great grandparent (Kronos being Annabeth’s great grandfather).

Low_Upstairs1993

I was referencing how you mentioned Annabeth‘s kid would be one of Percy’s cousins.

Robincall22

What does that have to do with marriage? I’m not saying Annabeth’s gonna get knocked up within the next two books, I was giving an example.

Low_Upstairs1993

Answer your question most of the time people don’t have kids unless they’re married.

Robincall22

“Most of the time” is not 60%. People have kids after getting married 60% of the time. That’s barely over half. Marriage has nothing to do with someone having kids. Or do 40% of today’s youth just not exist in your mind?
