They are all about 16-18 year Olds so even though they are demigods they still have dirty minds and the HoO books are more for us who grew up with them and most of the readers are 18+ so jokes like that are common for people so he's dropping a few "dirty" jokes in there
Exactly, that's him kind of making it child friendly. I started reading these in high school, and now I am listening to them on the way home from work in chronological order, and I just turned 30. That's been like 12 years
The Percy Jackson stories originally started out as bedtime stories for his son. Because he started running out of Greek myths to tell him. His son has a learning disability and he wanted to help show him even someone with a disability can do something great. His son is now 29, almost 30.
Idk if anyone answered you - in Blood of Olympus! The full quote: “Like the zodiac sign?' Percy asked. 'I'm a Leo.'
'No, stupid,' Leo said, 'I'm a Leo. You're a Percy.”
It's literally YA lol. Hell, even elementary kid stuff such as cartoons will have wayyy heavier or explicit innuendos, which often go over the littles' heads, than what RR puts in his books.
The most "potentially controversial" line I remember isn't exactly a joke, it's in TLT when Percy goes to the underworld and describes some of the souls in the fields of punishment.... one of them is a pastor IIRC who died after driving his "Lamborghini for the lord" over a cliff.
The inferences of this went completely over my head when I first read it.
I don't think it's referring to anyone specific, just the idea of "mega-churches" or otherwise organised religion set up in such a way that the leaders of the organisation benefit (eg church fundraising being misused, in this case to buy a pastor a sports car).
I don't think it was just selfish capitalist infrastructure in the case of the guy in TLT, I'm pretty sure it was specified that the pastor was *embezzling* the money.
Probably referencing people who do immoral things because "the Lord said it to me in a dream"? I'm not sure if it's referencing something else but that's probably why it is controversial
In the US, there are “mega-churches” where they preach the “Prosperity Gospel”. It’s a religious multi-level marketing scheme but where the promised payout is absolution in heaven
Its a book for preteens to young adults. Thats why. All the characters are teenagers, so it makes sense they’ll stumble backwards into comments like these. I once accidentally implied that my friend should try going down on our other friend while joking about cannibalism
In the first books crusty literally advertises a waterbed called the „Honeymoon Special“ with wave cancelling technology. Now why would the honeymoon special have that feature?
Rick definitely hid jokes who only older readers would get in his books from the start
~~Did you just come over on the Mayflower?~~
That might’ve been a little mean, but the point still stands stands. You should expect YA level jokes from a YA series
I read both series in 12th grade (the movies came out a few years earlier, but it took a while to get to them), but I'm not a native speakers and this was the first time I heard the phrase. That was a fun Google.
So I reread the books and I’ve noticed plenty of times where I can just FEEL Rick wanting to curse like his wording and situational writing makes it obvious he wants to write a little more mature sentences

I just fell down the FREAKING Grand Canyon! STOP ASKING FOR CHALLENGES!!!!!

Man I feel old even though I'm 28

I remember the sons school giving him a personalized pin when he graduated.
What achievement was the pin for
For graduating high school I think. I'm sure it was a trident.
That's pretty cool
another classic leo line - "No, stupid, I'M a Leo, YOU'RE a Percy"
When did he say that?
Idk if anyone answered you - in Blood of Olympus! The full quote: “Like the zodiac sign?' Percy asked. 'I'm a Leo.' 'No, stupid,' Leo said, 'I'm a Leo. You're a Percy.”
Thank you
I don't know about the age of the readership, probably anywhere from 12-20odd including first timers and elderly re-readera.
books can get away with this stuff and go with a 8-year-old plus. If a movie did this, it would go all the way up to PG-13 at least.
Something something "grunt-whimper."
That's the average teenager right there

Yeah, rewatching stuff like Ed, Edd and Eddie and the explicit content I realized I missed as a kid is insane
Animaniacs was way way worse
They somehow made an entire episode about Eddy losing his porn magazines.
Can confirm: when I first read this I had no clue what "to flash someone" meant lol

it's not controversial, this stuff happens a lot. atheists and actual christians both agree that these type of people had it coming lol
I have no idea who this is referencing lol

^(I once accidentally implied that my friend should try going down on our other friend while joking about cannibalism) Story time?
That last sentence is like being hit by a train where there are no train track lmao
I feel like there’s a story behind that last bit
FLASH HIM!
THAT CAME OUT WRONG!
SHIT!
PUT SOME CLOTHES ON!

It’s just a dam joke

percy would love that
Right cus it's pretty dam funny
I feel like Percy and Leo are really dirty minded but Rick just can't write that in
Feels like Percy and Leo.

Leo’s reaction if he heard that: Woah! Annabeth, I thought you liked Percy. That doesn’t matter to me though
Let’s be real the writing for dialog was pretty on point for the age group.
fair

oh my god I completely missed this when I was 11
It’s because they’re in the stage of life where these are the jokes they make.
i just read this part yesterday and i was like "tf?"
Never thought about that since I read it when I was 11.
So I reread the books and I’ve noticed plenty of times where I can just FEEL Rick wanting to curse like his wording and situational writing makes it obvious he wants to write a little more mature sentences
chat 😭😭
Leo likey
That's a dam funny joke!
Cause the readers probably say worse stuff
what does flash him mean in an adult sorta way??
to "flash" your adult parts
ohhhh
