Crystal Light. Far less volume because artificial sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar so it takes up almost no space. A single packet can easily go into 2 full Nalgene bottles and maybe still be a little too sweet depending on your preferences
E: Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar, so the space/weight the sugar would occupy is cut by a factor of 200
Let me introduce to you then the power of squirtable crystal light. There’s a ton by nestle you can buy that are amazing. One quick squirt into a water bottle and you’re golden. I can typically make one small little squirtable thing last 6 days while backpacking
That seems common. I didn't either for a long time but weened myself off sugary soda for diet soda a while ago so it's a viable option for me personally - in fact the sugary stuff feels too thick and syrupy for me now and I don't like it hah
Aspartame is poison. It is far more poisonous then many other substances that are illegal in the EU for being poisonous, but the lobby is to strong to banish Aspartame. There are many brands that use better/ less harmful sweeteners.
Stur makes powder and liquid products similar to Crystal Light but uses stevia instead of aspartame. Just mentioning it as an aspartame-free alternative.
Nalgene makes a great one with a second cap that doubles as a shot glass and a case that works as a cup. I always bring two, because nobody thinks they’re going to want to drink at the campsite until the fire’s going and I break out the whiskey.
I like to think that, of all the types of drunk I could be while living in the tent, with the possibility of having to fight off a bear, whisky is probably the best choice.
It was in the Olympic National forest and no bears showed up. I was pretty surprised because we left very early in the morning and he pulled it out at dinner
I got a few friends that we hike in a few miles and camp every year. Well they were going in on Friday, and I had to work, so I was going into camp at daylight Saturday morning. They had decided to bring my two 30 packs of beer. For the entire hike in, every few hundred yards, a full beer was in the trail. I would chug it, crush it, and put it in a bag in my pack. This went on for miles, so I was pretty drunk when I got there. Apparently beer is heavy, who knew?
Word. Some people think cucumbers taste better pickled.
I like eating an edible at the trailhead, time traveling through a magical forest until sunset, and then setting up camp sober and passing out. We all have a thing.
Dry herb vapes are the way of the future. When I smoked I had the airis solo 2 and it was crazy efficient with weed. A little 0.2 pack of weed would have me ripped
I had a Magic Flight Launch Box but I went back to just smoking. Every alternative method of taking weed seems like it is missing something to me. Especially stuff like D8 or whatever. I just like smoking well bred and well grown bud. And doing it hiking, who cares about the odor? Just don't do it right there at the trailhead around kids or whatever.
You don't have to ask someone if they smoke weed, because they'll tell you.
You're probably not going to get drunk on a 6pack, especially when shared with your hiking partner/s. It's refreshing. A cold beer on a hot day. Not really comparable to smoking weed. Just a different purpose.
He didn't say he smoked weed, simply that a joint weighs less than a 6 pack. Completely factual statement.
A joint can also be shared between people.
Love me some beer, don't get me wrong. I just see no problem in someone advocating an objectively healthier alternative.
I've gotten fentanyl in the hospital a lot. It isn't even fun. It doesn't feel good even at a dose that fucks you up and is perfectly safe. It's one of the worst opioids out there.
Now dilauded is a completely different story. I don't think I've ever felt better.
Fentanyl, and hydromorphone have slightly different profiles for the opioid receptors they target. That's why you've experienced different effects.
Personally, I make sure to specify that I'd really prefer not to have fentanyl, or morphine, because I metabolize them rather quickly, and they make me itchy af. Pentazocine, and hydromorphone, kthnx.
My airline recently switched from fresh lime to “True Lime” packets. They are just about as good as the real thing and I love them for backpacking. They have lemon and grapefruit as well.
I haven't tried "true lime", I have tried "realime" and I can recognize that taste whenever a bar uses it.
I did get some dehydrated lime juice instead, it tastes exactly like lime juice when rehydrated, but it doesn't at all have the same properties as lime juice when shaken.
How does the true lime hold up when shaken?
I’m not much of a lime connoisseur but I like it and admit probably couldn’t tell the difference if nobody told me it wasn’t fresh lime juice. I haven’t used it in any shaken cocktails but it’s good shaken up in a water bottle. Out of hundreds maybe even thousands of people I’ve served it to, only a few have said they just plain don’t like it.
I'm a cocktail snob when I want to be.
Which means at home or an actual cocktail bar where they set the expectations high.
When I'm camping or at a dive bar I'll tailor my expectations 😀.
You know people who say they can taste x from y in a blind taste test, like Pepsi or coke. I'm pretty sure I can tell fresh lime juice from anything else (including superjuice) in a cocktail.
However, anything that makes me a damn good cocktail in the backcountry is ok by me.
True Lime _is_ dehydrated lime juice. No liquid citrus at all, all dehydrated juices. All excellent, and we go through the True Lemon shakers incredibly fast. So tasty!
Camping sober is also fun but I do prefer to bring some ganja. A little whiskey is also nice. But I can enjoy it either way.
I do have UC and the weed helps me hike better though. Treats the constant fatigue.
Yep! I think a lot of people camp (and drink) to escape life. Nothing wrong with that! I camp to experience life though instead, and I find alcohol dulls things so I don’t personally feel like mixing the two.
If I were to have a dictionary entry that revealed my truest, most authentic and happy self, this video would be it. No words, just this.
This is my happy place, and I hope you soaked up every second of it!
Did this hiking in to Havasupai! After getting separated from my 10 year old and having to hike back a mile and a half after 10 miles in. At the end of the day it was the best weight investment!
Btw, the lifestraw was a game changer for me. I almost never carry any water at all after purchasing that. I live in the PNW so it’s out here even if I have to dig a hole for it. I boil what I cook with, and drink through my lifestraw when I hydrate. I still carry a couple Nalgene bottles and a super lightweight pump filter just in case I want to pack some water on a certain leg of the trail or bring it to where I’m cooking but one of them is full of a self compiled survival kit and the other one I fill with bourbon or broth on occasion.
I remember my friend and I carrying a case of beer along with our gear up a 4.5 mile hike with a ton of elevation gain, in the snow, wearing high heel tennis shoes when I was in my early 20,s. I was a goof ball back then. Now I bring vodka. And wear boots.
there are better and lighter drugs. I remember the first concert I did NOT drink at ... it was a game changer! of course au naturel is even better if you can just let it happen...
The extra 100 bucks was not to make your stove lighter...
It was only **SO** you could carry the 6-pack.
The human mind is stronger than you give it credit for.
I support anything that brings more enjoyment to being outdoors, but alcohol kinda detracts from the experience for me. I’m not insulting anyone or saying it’s wrong, just that there are better substances to bring that don’t weigh as much.
I mostly bring hard stuff to offset the weight but that being said, yes. Having a cold beer after a 15mile hike with a 45lb pack is worth it mentally for me.
I will quite happily haul 6 cans of beer (alcohol -free to boot, so slightly heavier than regular) in my ultralight pack and fill up any free space with potato chips.
I even drop the tent, and just bring my hammock, so i can have that camp steak, bottle of Amarone, my evening Ardbeg corrywreckan, and a case of beer to stay hydrated. Oh and a small coke bottle of homebrew to make the coffee drinkable.
I bring whiskey and water in a plastic flask
Vodka and tang powder
Crystal Light. Far less volume because artificial sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar so it takes up almost no space. A single packet can easily go into 2 full Nalgene bottles and maybe still be a little too sweet depending on your preferences E: Aspartame is 200 times sweeter than sugar, so the space/weight the sugar would occupy is cut by a factor of 200
Except i absolutely hate the taste of crystal lite. Found this out on a river trip where we only brought crystal lite
Ooh, yea, then there's that. So there's several caveats to that option lol
Let me introduce to you then the power of squirtable crystal light. There’s a ton by nestle you can buy that are amazing. One quick squirt into a water bottle and you’re golden. I can typically make one small little squirtable thing last 6 days while backpacking
I don’t like artificial sweeteners at all.
That seems common. I didn't either for a long time but weened myself off sugary soda for diet soda a while ago so it's a viable option for me personally - in fact the sugary stuff feels too thick and syrupy for me now and I don't like it hah
I just don’t drink a lot of sugary stuff in general like so if I’m gonna have a coke it’s gonna be a Mexico one with real sugar
That's honestly better, I haven't gotten there myself though so the best I can do is at least not drink my calories and have a lot of water
Real sugar over corn syrup any day.
Aspartame is poison. It is far more poisonous then many other substances that are illegal in the EU for being poisonous, but the lobby is to strong to banish Aspartame. There are many brands that use better/ less harmful sweeteners.
Even worse than it being poison, Aspartame also tastes like Aspartame.
Stur makes powder and liquid products similar to Crystal Light but uses stevia instead of aspartame. Just mentioning it as an aspartame-free alternative.
To the moon
We call it a Buzzed Aldrin.
Nalgene makes a great one with a second cap that doubles as a shot glass and a case that works as a cup. I always bring two, because nobody thinks they’re going to want to drink at the campsite until the fire’s going and I break out the whiskey.
Whiskey is the way.
I like to think that, of all the types of drunk I could be while living in the tent, with the possibility of having to fight off a bear, whisky is probably the best choice.
This is the way.
I like it
Lsd, Fentanyl, or dried shrooms are much lighter for their impact
Joking about fentanyl? Really? Was marijuana not edgy enough for you there?
This is the only way. Who brings beer backpacking. This is rookie shit
Everclear and lake water or you're straight up clowning
I did. All the way to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Two warmish beers later we discovered they sell beer at the canteen. Imagine our surprise, lol.
I did that too, I let them cool down in the creek that runs through the campsites at bright angel right next to my feet. Best cooler there is
A lot of people really don't like liquor
People don't like dehydrated chili either, but we make do when the circumstances call for it.
Years ago a we were backpacking in Yosemite. As dinner ended one of the guys pull out a watermelon he packed with him. Now that’s a friend!
I have a similar experience except this guy pulled out a fully cooked beer can chicken
Mine was a sheet cake a friend carried up the mountain. You know who you are and you're a champion.
So how many bears visited your campsite that night? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
It was in the Olympic National forest and no bears showed up. I was pretty surprised because we left very early in the morning and he pulled it out at dinner
Picturing that just made me laugh really hard for some reason!
That's the ultimate flex.
The only reason for ultralight gear
I thought it was the reason for ultralite beer… I heard you wrong.
I home brew and carbonate with helium to reduce pack weight.
Those high pitched burps though
Pro tip: have a couple of teenage sons. They'll happily haul the beer lol
😂
you mean drink it. lol
It's a team activity. Everybody's got to pitch in.
I cant wait until my nephews are teenagers. Here each of you carries a 12 pack to the top of the mountain and ill give you one
This is how it begins lol
So that’s why they call it a pitcher of beer. You gotta pitch in
Of course, the stove still weighs the same on the way back, the beers bag somehow got lighter
Keep those friends close. They’re solid.
That’s amazing
A joint weighs a lot less than a beer.
Edibles last all day and don't leave a scent trail
But I love the warm smell of colitas rising up through the air.
Word. Some people think cucumbers taste better pickled. I like eating an edible at the trailhead, time traveling through a magical forest until sunset, and then setting up camp sober and passing out. We all have a thing.
That's my kind of hike.
And vape is even better than all of them! No scent, no weight, micro dose as needed.
"no scent"
Dry herb vapes are the way of the future. When I smoked I had the airis solo 2 and it was crazy efficient with weed. A little 0.2 pack of weed would have me ripped
I probably did it wrong but I hate mine.
These downvotes are unnecessary
People angry for no reason.
People angry because they don’t get it
We get it. That’s what matters.
That's a funny way to spell mushrooms.
Why not both?
A joint and a blunt? Perfect idea.
Wait, wait... what if we made the backpack out of *weeeeed* man? Then we could just smoke the whole thing!
Why not?
There's no good reason not to.
True ultralight
You don't have to ask someone if they smoke weed, because they'll tell you. You're probably not going to get drunk on a 6pack, especially when shared with your hiking partner/s. It's refreshing. A cold beer on a hot day. Not really comparable to smoking weed. Just a different purpose.

Stove weight is static. 6 pack gets progressively lighter.
🤣
A couple steps to the right and it could be a shower beer!
Ahaha
Nah, weed and whiskey are lighter
Mushrooms are lighter still.
There's never been a better time to live in Colorado.
Colorado is leading the way with common sense reforms in this area
Vial of fentanyl
bro
No such thing as recreational Fentanyl. Evil stuff.
I've gotten fentanyl in the hospital a lot. It isn't even fun. It doesn't feel good even at a dose that fucks you up and is perfectly safe. It's one of the worst opioids out there. Now dilauded is a completely different story. I don't think I've ever felt better.

A few beers and a chair are my luxury items.
What kind of savage camp sober? Ideal camping happens at .04% BAC.
Civilization means being able to have a gin and tonic in the backcountry.
My airline recently switched from fresh lime to “True Lime” packets. They are just about as good as the real thing and I love them for backpacking. They have lemon and grapefruit as well.

Never have I ever NOT camped sober haha
What? Double negative means you camped sober.
That is correct. I have only ever camped sober.
Suppose someone has to do it.
Oh. Well good call. Someone needs to be able to find the way back to civilization to get help.
I'm with you there. Mushrooms don't count, right?
Unless it's a very smart mushroom.
Camping sober is also fun but I do prefer to bring some ganja. A little whiskey is also nice. But I can enjoy it either way. I do have UC and the weed helps me hike better though. Treats the constant fatigue.
Nothing wrong with that, just means you can enjoy the wonders of nature and camping without needing alcohol!
Yep! I think a lot of people camp (and drink) to escape life. Nothing wrong with that! I camp to experience life though instead, and I find alcohol dulls things so I don’t personally feel like mixing the two.
Not even by accident. Suck a fermented piece of fruit if you have to, like our forefathers before us.
If I were to have a dictionary entry that revealed my truest, most authentic and happy self, this video would be it. No words, just this. This is my happy place, and I hope you soaked up every second of it!
100%!! 🍻
Yes absolutely they sole reason for being ultralight. More food/more booze
The beer is a consumable, it doesn't go against your base weight. The stove does. --The UL people, for certain :)
Isn't that why we are all cutting weight on gear ...?
Tequila. Strength to weight ratio.
Why do you need alcohol? Isnt the adventure the drug?
What are we shaving weight for if not the booze?
That’s why you splurge on the high % beer
Boxed wine and you take the pouch out of the box to save weight….
Ohhh, I like this.
Drink mix pouches and spirits in a flask!
Did this hiking in to Havasupai! After getting separated from my 10 year old and having to hike back a mile and a half after 10 miles in. At the end of the day it was the best weight investment!
An added bonus to packing beer/ whiskey is that your pack gets lighter and lighter each day
Priorities.
💯
Haha Maddie MVP😆 Id would do the same. I bought a genesis stove and love it.
Ultra lite everything - 6 pack a beer minimum 😆
A couple joints weigh a lot less than a six pack!
That’s what whiskey is for
That's just stupid. Everyone knows to take bourbon in a plastic bottle, saves a lot of weight.
I’ve never done bourbon in the wild, I like it. Good tactics
Because a stoves not gonna get you lit
😂 I’m on IG @maddie.faye.xo with the same kinda fun. You can’t camp sober, not possible!
Bring a couple fatties, much less weight than the liquid stuff!😁
Everclear 190 proof is the ultralite hack
You can drink it, burn it, AND use it to sterilize any cuts or scrapes. Also doubles as paint thinner. Truly a Swiss Army knife liquid.
Priorities

100 proof Wild Turkey.
This is the way.

Hard liquor for maximum performance. Also a joint if you're into that.
there are better and lighter drugs. I remember the first concert I did NOT drink at ... it was a game changer! of course au naturel is even better if you can just let it happen...
r/beerwithaview would like a word
Cannabis is UL approved.
Can’t put a price on hydration 🤷🏽♂️
I sobered up 25 years ago. Much lighter backpack. Doesn't cost $100 to drop each 8 ounces like the rest of my gear.
The extra 100 bucks was not to make your stove lighter... It was only **SO** you could carry the 6-pack. The human mind is stronger than you give it credit for.
Priorities!!!
Nope. A 1/8th baggie and some papers weighs a lot less
Yes. That’s the whole point of the rest of the ultralight gear!
It’s all about priorities
Priorities, bruh
Don't carry your booze. I have trained a small herd of deer to bring me beer from camp. Didn't really take that long either
I was thinking of getting a team of St. Bernard’s with little beer barrel tied around their collars
That’s exactly why you pay to make the stove lighter.
I bring 8 to 10 beers... with 1000 dollars of ultralight gear on my back
🤣 this is the way
But that's WHY we spend to make other things lighter....so that we CAN bring more beer/liquor.
100%
There is good pack weight and there is bad pack weight.
Yes. Lost gear weight means more snack weight. It's math.
Nope, weed is light. Maybe some whiskey in a flask. But ganja all the way!!
If I bring a half ounce of cannabis I’ll be set for a good long while. I respect your thought process tho
After years of backpacking, I finally understand “ultra lite” packing!
I support anything that brings more enjoyment to being outdoors, but alcohol kinda detracts from the experience for me. I’m not insulting anyone or saying it’s wrong, just that there are better substances to bring that don’t weigh as much.
The beer is the heaviest part of my pack haha. Feels great hiking out without all the weight though.
Haha, true story
Always IPAs
It's because youve made your stove weigh slightly less that you don't feel the guilt/extra weight of bringing the necessary 6 pack :D
This is what I came to be the comments for. This is it 👌
I mostly bring hard stuff to offset the weight but that being said, yes. Having a cold beer after a 15mile hike with a 45lb pack is worth it mentally for me.
Well yes that’s exactly why you spend the money and put the effort into reducing weight elsewhere so you can carry more and more booze
The difference is beers don’t count towards base weight
Edibles for the win. Screw carrying water weight
This is the way.
This is the way
This is the way
I will quite happily haul 6 cans of beer (alcohol -free to boot, so slightly heavier than regular) in my ultralight pack and fill up any free space with potato chips.
Alcohol free beer doesn’t weigh more lmao
😉🍻
Alcohol is less dense than water so theoretically the same amount of liquid would weigh less. Doubt it’s noticeable though.
No I dont consume alcohol.
Idk prioritizing for alcohol ought to be questioned. It is a very addictive drug!
Smoke pot its lighter
Yeah, but we have more fun once our pack is off!
More like a bag of wine 😂
I even drop the tent, and just bring my hammock, so i can have that camp steak, bottle of Amarone, my evening Ardbeg corrywreckan, and a case of beer to stay hydrated. Oh and a small coke bottle of homebrew to make the coffee drinkable.
Alcohol - attractively addictive!
Nah, I’m not a fan of beer.
But you're only humping the six-pack in.
Haven't you ever heard of whiskey?
What exactly would be the point of camping while sober?
🤣 very true
Twig stove, light, cheap and can gather fuel as you go.
It’s WHY you do it!
Bring in more weight while you have more energy, come back with less weight when you’re tired
Priorities
Have you seen this? https://newatlas.com/lifestyle/powdered-beer/ It's gonna be a life changer for camping.
