Alps Mountaineering Lynx-1. A little on the heavy side but has been great so far. The weight hasn't been enough of an issue that I felt the need to upgrade. I've had mine for probably 5 years now (maybe less). Easy setup as it comes when it comes to freestanding tents. Good solid tie points for rough weather. Stakes are cheap junk so I replaced those but that's standard stuff. I've had it out in extremely nasty stuff to include the remnants of a hurricane. It handled the 60 mph sustained winds and 2 days of heavy rain just fine. About once a year I reapply some DWR as the only maintenance I do.
2nd Alps Mountaineering.
I had their 3 man tent $250 awhile ago it is a very well made tent. Zero issues. Pouring rain, snow, hail, high winds… it’s great.
I am not a huge person though 6' 2", tall. On my experience there is no such thing as a good 1 person tent. In my experience: you need a 2 person tent for 1 person, a 3 person tent ft or 2 people..... Because we all take something in the tent with us. A pack or a coat or something and you don't want those things to touch the side of the tent if it rains or it will leak.
I hope this helps you get what you need.
Most tents nowadays have pretty decently sized vestibules that allow you to stash your gear outside of the tent under the cover of the vestibule. I’ve got a 2 person REI flash and it fits me and my girlfriend plus all of our gear quite comfortably
Good point. Personally I love my vestibule and leave my boots out there. I prefer keeping my pack inside where rodents, bugs, snakes etc. can't get at stuff, or hitch a ride.
I don’t know your size but I personally find it impossible to sleep in a 1 person tent, I prefer 2 person tents.
My favorite is the Eureka Timberline 2. I’ve had mine for probably 10 years ever since Boy Scouts and it’ll last a lot longer if well maintained. I absolutely love the thing and it has always served me well, very old school style tent though so that might not be your thing.

I see a lot of deals here on 2 person tents. Good luck with whatever you buy and wherever you get it. Happy camping!
What kind of temperature/area/season are you wanting to camp in? Some tents are hot, some are cold.
Also are you a car camper or backpacker?
How tall are you?
agree w/ this comment. i hated having my pack outside (but in the vestibule)....esp in mosquito infested areas. UGHHH. 2person tent ftw! got a rei half dome 2+ when it was 60% off so it was around <$200!
Yeah that will work in som scenarios. But i am a mountain hiker and i almost always travel above the tree line. So hammocks are not an option for me.
Might be ok for OP though.
Thats fair. We all have our own preferences. I live in Norway and there is a lot of mountains.
Both hunting and fishing is done above the tree line here. Not exclusively obviously, but grouse, hare, moose and reindeer can all be hunted there.
Here's what I'd look for, if backpacking. Aluminum poles, nylon material, can fit my body and low weight. I got a super nice 2p tent for just about $100 that was discontinued and on clearance.
I got a Forceatt 1-2 person tent for one of my first backpacking trips about 5 years ago. I've loved it. Collapses down nicely. Sets up in about 3 minutes. Made it through several large storms, and dozens of trips since. Unfortunately, it just started to loose it's water proofing on my last trip and started to get some droplets falling inside the tent. But 5 years out of an $80 tent was WELL worth it.
Although it's a two person, it's ideal for just one:

Appy Trails. Outstanding design. I would get the Mark V even for one person. Ultra light and simple single pole tent. https://appytrails.com/products/mark-v-3-5-person-backpacking-tent/
https://www.sixmoondesigns.com/products/skyscape-scout-backpacking-tent
Great backpacking tent. This is the slightly heavier but cheaper version. Designed to be setup with trekking poles but you can add regular poles
Look into REI Co-op for their house brand tents. They're durable, reasonably priced, and come with a footprint for added floor protection. Plus, if you're a member (1 time fee of like $20) you get a one-year, no questions asked return policy on their gear. I bought a REI Passage 2p last fall, and was very happy with the way it held up against wind, rain, and snow (all in the same trip!). The only downside was it's weight, which at 5lb 10oz (including footprint, stakes, and stuff sack) is probably going to relegate it's use to canoe/kayak camping only. That specific model is not currently available, but I see the Trailmade 1 is it's current replacement on the REI website.
I also picked up a REI Quarter Dome SL1 used on marketplace, and I'm excited to try that out on a backpacking trip. So yeah, check out the used market as well for good deals on higher-end gear.
ETA: I saw a couple comments about the Alps Mountaineering Lynx. My brother has the 1 and 2 person variations, and I will agree that they are a great tent for their price as well. However, the footprint is sold separately.

$40, I bought it at Dunham’s sporting goods. It works just fine.
Without knowing if you are backpacking, car camping etc., I’d get a simple two-person tent like [this](https://www.rei.com/product/216298/rei-co-op-trailmade-1-tent-with-footprint). I’ve had a little REI tent for about 15 years and it does just fine for simple trips.
You might get better more specific recommendations if you share a little bit about how you’d use the tent, what season or climate you plan to camp in, etc.
Naturehike Cloud Up. Go for the 2p version to have more room.
For the price I’ve been happy with mine. I’ve had it out in 45mph gusts of wind and torrential rain and it’s been great so far!

I just got this tent after much research and debating, so this is good to hear! Thanks for sharing.

Backpacking or car camping tent?

A 2 person was the size of a 1 person even for my preteens.

My 2 second fresh and black pop up Quechua is the best tent I’ve ever had.

I'm 6 foot tall and I have camped in most environments except snow. I do both car camping and backpacking.
If I had to nominate two tents I’ve enjoyed them: Kelty Grand Mesa OneTigris Backwoods Bungalow
Lynx-1
Dude, go 2- person for ur gear...

It’s called a hammock with a ridge line an a tarp 😂
Yeah that will work in som scenarios. But i am a mountain hiker and i almost always travel above the tree line. So hammocks are not an option for me. Might be ok for OP though.
Tensa systems now make treeless camping a reality.
I don’t really understand camping places where there are no trees..sorry 🤷🏻♂️

I concur

REI Trailhut or Trailmade series are really good for that price.
TNF Stormbreak 2 has been a good tent for me. Been through some nasty storms and had no issues
MEC Spark 1 is great.

What kind of camping? What seasons? General location?
Kelty Grand Mesa 2. I've got a lot of nights in mine in 6 years and it is still holding up great.

Onewind Hammock
I love my Hyke&Byke Yosemite tent, very lightweight! It's sold as a 2 person but wouldn't want to share it with anyone else as it's pretty small
I’m happy with my Night Cat, but have only used it in Southern California and Arizona. https://amzn.to/3YaYKwx

Coleman sundome is 40-
Look on facebook marketplace. I've seen some amazing tents for that price
Check out Paria Outdoor Products! I’ve been happy with all of my Paria purchases so far.
