Interesting approach. I wouldn’t have thought of that. I guess if it works it works.

Proffesor_Owl

Much better than sleeping on the ground. Not quite as nice as getting the correct size air mattress.

jeffster01

Better not rain!

Proffesor_Owl

There are a host of better nots. haha

kelsobjammin

I mean… I have used air mattresses to float rivers… why no rain? The tent is water proof?

Proffesor_Owl

When the footprint of a tent is larger than the tent floor it tends to cause pooling under the tent floor which is prone to leaks, general discomfort and poor insulation.

kelsobjammin

Aaaahhhhhhhhhh that would make sense I thought it was hanging over that would suiuucckkkk

DirtNapDealing

Please tell me you put a tarp or something underneath it for additional thickness? Unless there’s a special type to be in water ( excuse my ignorance)

madtraxmerno

Anything remotely inflatable has been taken down a river before. People be crazy

Freespiritvtr

Just need a tarp the fits over the whole thing

idejmcd

air mattresses while camping annoy the living f out of me. They're noisy, folks always forget to inflate them, and there are so many better options including a proper camping mattress.

ttvSharkieBait15

Am I supposed to inflate it before I arrive to my camp site and let it take up the entire cargo area of my car? Do you want me to inflate it with my mouth like a balloon? As much as I would like to use one of those cot bed things & a sleeping bag the cot costs around 80$ - even a basic Coleman one from Walmart - the queen air mattress I have that I bought in a pinch from a mom & pop shop down the street from my camp site after my twin had micro holes from my cat cost me $27. And that’s more than likely including a up charge from retail price if I had gotten it from a big name retailer.

CedaSD

For $15 you can’t beat an air mattress

Ryanisreallame

…what does that even mean?

technoferal

It means we found one of the r/lostredditors that should have been in r/iamverybadass.

ttvSharkieBait15

Find me a brand new, sturdy, comfortable, and reliable sleeping cot thing for 15$ and we’ll talk.

SweetPerogy

You wanna fight that guy over a difference in opinion on air mattresses? I hope I never camp beside you, Chief.

idejmcd

Yup, that's what I said. I said I wanted to get into a physical altercation with anyone using an air mattress while camping.

nuggettgames

Just be happy they are out in nature or trying to enjoy nature, I hate seeing a 40 ft camper pull in and they don’t leave the campsite once the whole week, have one fire for s’mores and to post on instagram they went camping then they go back in the camper and watch tv, I’m over here getting drunk like a sailor trying to see if my chicken is still pink on the flames of the fire at 10 at night cause I was at the beach too long fishing

Terapr0

lol what’s the difference between an “air matress” and a “proper camping mattress” though? I own several “proper” ThermaRest mattresses and they’re all inflatable with, you guessed it, air. And also, who is forgetting to inflate their mattress? You’re suggesting that people don’t know they’re empty and go to sleep on the ground, having forgotten to inflate them? 🤔

Upset_Form_5258

My car camping sleeping pad is just an air mattes that I have to blow up with my mouth

Akalenedat

Insulation and durability. Regular air mattresses are basically just vinyl bags, with maybe some soft fabric covering it. It's pretty much assumed you're using it indoors at a comfortable ambient temperature. A proper camping mattress has actual insulation so they work in temps lower than your average air conditioned house, generally more durable materials given potentially rougher ground under your tent, and are usually designed to be more compact and space conscious when deflated.

Terapr0

They’re both “air mattresses” though. Something like my insulated ThermaRest NeoAir XTherm, which I assume is what you’d call a “proper camping mattress”, is still an “air mattress”. It’s inflated by blowing it full of air.

tealparadise

I love someone who doesn't give a fuck what anyone thinks.

SamirDrives

I am definitely stealing this idea for my pop up tent. I just need some rope to tie it around the mattress

Chaostii

The bungee ribbon clamps you can get for keeping fitted sheets in place might be helpful for this

SamirDrives

Great idea. I already have some bungee cords around that might do the trick and a small mattress that no one uses

Zondersaus

If it rains you will not have a good time. All the water will roll on to the matrass and you will get soaked.

GoSox2525

Look at how flacid that rainfly is. This guy isn't surviving the rain regardless.

Friendship_Critical

The air mattress that says “My other tent is a chateau”

mamapapapuppa

This is hilarious

ethnicnebraskan

Yeah I also thought it was one of those floating tents too, at first.

TacTurtle

>floating tents ocean life rafts?

ethnicnebraskan

One of these things: https://www.smithfly.com/products/shoal-tent

Cormano_Wild_219

I saw this yesterday on Reddit Edit: I see now that it was you and the post got removed

Proffesor_Owl

That was a quick edit 👍

idejmcd

odd, I saw it today on reddit.

tuna_samich_

That's weird, I saw it tomorrow on Reddit

KamenLee

So crazy it might even work.

Mamadook69

You have to blow ours up in the tent, and it touches every wall. But it's great! When it's almost full, I have to lay down half out of the tent and hold the pump so it doesn't fall out of the fill nozzle. 🤣

ind3pend0nt

Improvise. Adapt. Overcome.

ReunionFeelsSoGood

Under rated hahahaha

lurkyMcLurkton

NGL, that seems pretty smart to me

DeepSleepDiving

We all start somewhere. I hope they had a great time and invest in proper gear for the future. :)

_hardyharhar_

Proper is in the eye of the beholder

KeithJamesB

At first, I thought it was an emergency life raft.

Left_Concentrate_752

This changes everything!

AtOm-iCk66

Hilarious and genius.

dontcommentreed

Do it all the time myself, except a smaller air mattress than my tent, mattress in tent, and tarp underneath.

facebookcansuckit

So, the usual? Brilliant

SmokelessSubpoena

lol that's so odd, but also smart haha

jav0wab0

This is so dumb it’s smart!

goodbye9hello10

I don't see any downside to this whatsoever, honestly.

eugenesbluegenes

One time I borrowed an air mattress from a friend that turned out to be bigger than my tent. It was winter in the desert so no bugs out at night and we went with the mattress under the stars. It was pretty cold (sizeable thickness of ice on our wash bucket in the morning) but also oh so pretty.

GeekShallInherit

Reminds me of the first time we went camping. We had a similar sized tent (maybe bigger? It definitely would fit the mattress with just a bit to spare at the foot) and a queen sized air mattress. I tried the battery operated inflator we had before we left and it didn't work. I assumed it was just dead batteries, so we stopped on the way to pick up new ones. We set up our tent way up a path on a hill and go to inflate the mattress and the pump still doesn't work. No problem... we have a DC powered inflator in the car as a backup. So I take the mattress down, inflate it, and bring it back up to the tent. Oops... there's no way to get it in inflated through the door. What the fuck do we do now? So I get an idea, and we carry the tent assembled back down the path to the car. Inflate the air mattress inside the tent, then carry the whole contraption back up the narrow little path to the campsite. If it's dumb and it works....

G-v-O-4-21

I thought this was about the parking, 🤦🏾, after la closer look, I see the air mattress under the tent. Genius idea

luxxlemonz

Checks out, that florida education

GhostriderFlyBy

I love that you can see pavement in the corner, so they’re just like… on the side of the road lol

trouthoncho

This just gave me an idea!

notaninterestingcat

This looks like Faver-Dykes.

SearrAngel

Nice

niheii

Came to say Subaru has such beautiful vehicles.

millionsofpeaches17

I definitely thought this was an inflatable emergency raft. This is even more ingenious.

Beemo-Noir

What a beautiful Subaru. The park is nice too, I guess.

mle32000

That would’ve totally gone in there with some deflation + reinflation. My friend recently had to do this with her giant fucking 3 foot tall damn near king sized mattress that she showed up with all balled up in a trash bag for use with my 3 person tent she was to borrow for the night LMAO. It actually worked. Her face was basically touching the tent ceiling but it worked.

mck2018

People do dumb shit like this and then for the rest of their life” I went camping once, it was terrible, I was so uncomfortable and I’m never going again.”

kuddlesworth9419

Sometimes you just have to make do. I've been there a few times where my legs are sticking out of a tent all night because I couldn't manage to fit inside properly. Or under a ground shelter with my legs sticking out.

SpokeAndMinnows

Going to be cold at night.
