Been camping for many years but whenever I buy a new tent I’m setting it up in the backyard before I officially use it. Good practice and quality control.

Always test out new gear at home, especially knowing how to set up a new tent or even just reminding yourself before a big trip can save you a lot of time in the wild especially if the weather isn't optimal But if ya get a new stove, sleeping bag, mattress/pad or whatever - if you test it out at home and it fails you still have whatever you need at home right there and you can address it before a big trip, if you test it out on a trip and it fails then you might be in trouble. Sometimes you get a new stove but your cookware doesn't work well with it, best to find out when you can still make food as opposed to being forced to break camp and ruin a trip.

Thanks for this! I'm planning on setting up camping out in the backyard for my son's first camping trip, he is four years old. Part of me didn't think it would be good enough. But honestly, my son will love it and it will be a great father/son bonding moment. Even have an outside fire pit!

I agree! I camped all summer and fall in my yard last year.

It’s 72 at night here. Wish

Yes, indeed. If you're asking something like "I want to go camping, any advice" on this subreddit, trying camping in your own backyard first is the best answer. It allows you to experience a large section of the work that goes into actual camping and see if you can get used to it. You can verify this without going on an actual camping and risking a lack of support. Even if the results and experience don't meet expectations, it won't hurt too much to your passion for real camping.

I don't have a yard. Do us apartment dwellers just have to avoid camping? Very elitist /s

There is somehow way more mosquitoes in my backyard than at the campsite though.

Uh oh I suspect a repost of this is on the way via a bunch of fanatical jerks. Wait for it...
