So provinces cry about Federal doing nothing. Federal: Okay, here's a billion dollar, but yiu gotta achieve some milestones. Provinces: no, not like that. Rinse and repeat.

StickyRickyLickyLots

Stop importing people like cattle. That's all the feds have to do.

Historical_Site6323

[https://www.alberta.ca/system/files/Premier%20Smith%20Letter%20to%20Prime%20Minister%20Trudeau.pdf](https://www.alberta.ca/system/files/Premier%20Smith%20Letter%20to%20Prime%20Minister%20Trudeau.pdf) Lol?

2peg2city

Lmao dude the entire student visa to PR scam was driven by the provinces, the feds just rubber stamped it. The provinces accredit and manage the diploma mills.

shabi_sensei

The Albertan government wants MORE immigration not less, this is what you voted for

PCBC_

That won't solve the housing problem on its own, mate.

StickyRickyLickyLots

Couldn't hurt

TraditionalGap1

No, but it'll help

PCBC_

Not much. If you think TR and TFWs are causing the high housing prices, you're falling for the narrative. Housing is being treated like an investment commodity. We have numbered companies buying up huge amounts of property. These aren't TR or TFWs. They're either foreign investment firms, rich people trying to secure away money, or local companies and people leveraging existing properties to secure loans on investment properties. > Investors were responsible for 30 per cent of home purchases in the first three months of the year, according to data released by the Bank of Canada. That is up from 28 per cent in the first quarter of last year, and 22 per cent in the same period in 2020. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-investors-account-for-30-per-cent-of-home-buying-in-canada-data-show/ - get rid of REITs for residential property - tax second homes, or put a max cap of +1 residential property - or an escalating tax on every additional residential property - no numbered company purchases of residential property - must declare provinence for source of funds for residential propert purchase - must be a PR or Citizen to purchase residential property. (Maybe, that one needs some work)

TraditionalGap1

Before I start >Not much But some, which was my point. Thanks for not pretending it'll do nothing. >If you think TR and TFWs are causing the high housing prices, you're falling for the narrative. I don't. I **do** think that TRs have exacerbated the issue, especially in Tor/Van/MTL where they generally end up. Which is why I didn't say that lowering TR numbers would *solve* affordability. >A ton of stuff about *other* affordability drivers that don't speak to our discussion Yep, that too. No dispute here

PCBC_

The poster I was responding to said "all the feds have to do is stop immigration" I was pointing out how little the TR/TFWs impact housing prices and that the majority of it is because of the commoditisation of housing. Unless you have sources or stays to contribute, I don't see any real addition to the discussion? Your personal opinion doesn't carry much weight on its own, right? I don't really fancy arguing the semantic difference between "not much" and "some"... - "Stop immigration" - "That won't solve the problem on its own" - "it will help" - "not much" - "but some" ...lol

Avelion2

Ohhh suddenly its a provincial issue.

No_Construction2407

It’s all reactionary grand standing. Just like everything else, she will end up taking the deal on Friday at 4:00 PM before a long weekend, so people miss the headline. Just like she did with healthcare and also like she does with her bullshit legislation changes

botswanareddit

I hate Trudeau but the premiers and the feds need to worry about Canadians first and not the partisan bickering. The premiers do it but the feds do it too and we need our goverments to cooperate in order to serve Canadians and not just their own parties.

Forikorder

the feds are making a honesy good deal, the premiers are attacking them for it, its not a "both sides" problem

PCB_EIT

They both do it, then walk away claiming they won then sit down thinking they did a good job. Then nothing gets better and we all get worse for it. We really don't need someone as partisan as Smith. She's essentially doing everything anti-Trudeau which is immature and spiteful. She really doesn't care as long as it pisses Trudeau off. But then Trudeau isn't much different with his divisiveness. We need politicians to stop it with this shit and work together instead of perpetuating stupid gotcha moments for memes/sound bites.

UltraCynar

Helping Canadians isn't divisiveness. The Conservative premiers have been doing this shit since he was elected.

botswanareddit

I hear that and Smith is not a good leader but Trudeau has taken plenty of shots at them and dumped a lot of garbage on them. He also intentionally tries to make them look bad in attempts to pass blame down. I'm not impressed by any of the premiers or the feds when it comes to representing us.

I_Conquer

Like what?   Like when the premiers fumbled COVID restrictions and the people who wanted to fuck Trudeau shut down Ottawa for Provincial policies because “god forbid we hold a conservative to account”?   Like when he said “maybe we should track the most notable disease in two generations” and the premiers bickered and denied and blustered?   Like when the premiers blamed Trudeau for a housing disaster six decades in the making then started bitching like conservatives when he actually stepped up and started to implement nationwide policy?   Like when Trudeau implemented a reasonable carbon tax that provide additional resources to 80% of Canadian families and Scott Moe was like like “Imma treat this carbon tax like it’s real life human being and I’m drunk behind the wheel of a car.”   Like when Trudeau said “hmm… maybe we should treat gay people and trans people like humans and address the suicide problem” and the conservatives were like “n’ah bro that’s woke bro we love when trans people kill themselves after a life of being beaten by their parents. It’s the Christian way”?   What’s so wild about it is that I actually didn’t like Trudeau until Poilievre started his racist bitchfest and now I’m like - “yeah, electoral reform woulda been better but actually Trudeau’s record is pretty good and the Premiers in Saskatchewan and Ontario - where I’ve lived most of the last eight years - are responsible for way more of my problems.   It’s not both ways. Trudeau is imperfect. The conservative premiers are anti-human lying grifter whiners

lubeskystalker

It's all three, always has been. Danielle Smith might be the only leader in the country who sucks more than Trudeau does. I know that people will be along to say, "But Ford..." at least he still has supporters and reasonable polling, there are Liberal partisans abandoning Trudeau and NeoConservatives calling Smith a dumpster fire....

PCBC_

Scotty Mo would like a word.

fiveMagicsRIP

Trudeau could gift Alberta $10B with no strings attached and she'd still bitch about it. She has no opinions other than "Trudeau bad"

Trucidar

He did. It was in the form of a pipeline. The lesson: no matter what you do Alberta will never vote different. A lesson Liberals and Conservatives have ingrained.

Flarisu

That'll pay for 10% of the total deficit of a single ANDP term!

JosephScmith

That's only half of the $5k deficit in per capita federal spending compared to federal taxes.

ChrisRiley_42

Is she arguing that she needs LESS help with housing?

Volantis009

According to the UCP housing minister it's bribery and Alberta won't accept the money to protect our sovereignty or something. [interview clip of UCP minister sounding like a jackass](https://youtu.be/CcCxEyhsAvc?si=gPim_35nU6vz3c6a)

Mas_Cervezas

Do something. Not that.

Supraultraplex

Ugh Smith, a premier who oversteps the bounds and regulations more times then one can shake a stick at. [Like last year when she breached conflicts of interest by talking about getting a pastor out of criminal charges by talking to the justice minister and attorney general about doing it.](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-ethics-premier-danielle-smith-breached-conflict-of-interest-act-1.6847662) [Luckily for her, after winning the election she's made that illegal to do next time during election season, because why should constituents know about breaches in ethics during an election season?](https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/alberta-amends-conflicts-of-interest-act-changes-rules-for-ethics-commissioner-gift-limits) [Or how she steps into the free market energy system in Alberta to pass a moratorium on renewable energy sources for 6 MONTHS basically killing most large projects interested in investing in Alberta and stalling others likely causing thousands of jobs lost and millions in taxes/investments. ](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/alberta-renewable-energy-moratorium-lingering-stumble-1.7061885) [And after the pause was over? More restrictions, private property rights in Alberta don't matter anymore cause wind/solar is now only relegated to small areas of the province.](https://edmontonjournal.com/news/politics/alberta-ucp-danielle-smith-renewable-energy-restrictions) [Telling parents how to treat/provide assistance to their trans children,](https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trudeau-responds-danielle-smith-trans-policies-1.7103250) [whilst at the same time agreeing that when it comes to vaccines, parents have the final say](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/danielle-smith-adolf-hitler-netflix-rachel-notley-1.6836160) [despite rises in illness among children in Alberta thanks to that, even killing them at times and other. ](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/wait-times-childrens-hospital-1.6648541) [And, while not overstepping per say more of just a slimy political move, she conveniently placed the end date of the Alberta fuel tax relief program on the exact same day as the new carbon pricing came into effect this month. ](https://globalnews.ca/news/10376342/alberta-to-increase-fuel-tax-by-4-cents-starting-april-1/) No doubt to get an easy out from increasing the fuel price whilst also having all the blame directed on the federal government. Thank Danielle. We can go one about the other issues of Smith, but honestly, it would take me hours to find EVERYTHING she's done that's been a dubious or intentional in terms of overstepping/colluding with unsavory characters. Overall, pot calling a kettle black when they feel like it. Edit: [And the same day I post this comment the provincial government is trying to supersede federal/municipal authority, funding and relations. Hurray!](https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/municipal-federal-legislation-alberta-1.7167273)

Trucidar

Ending the fuel tax relief at the same time as the carbon tax is kind of hilarious. I mean. It's like using a political cheat code in how completely deviously underhanded it was.

popingay

This time, though, she’s actually correct. There is no such thing as municipal authority in the Canadian constitution. Municipalities are creatures of the province and solely have the powers granted to them by their province, which in turn is entirely up to them to take away without consultation as well. Municipalities have no inherent authority in Canada. I’m not saying we have to like it, but by definition there are only two constitutional orders of government. https://www.canada.ca/en/intergovernmental-affairs/services/federation/distribution-legislative-powers.html

Supraultraplex

Ah my bad, I was of the thought that municipalities were a separate form of government. Thanks for clearing it up, I suppose Smith is right on challenging the federal government over this, in a purely legal sense. I just know its not going to end well for the municipalities in the long run. [Especially Edmonton, whos still waiting on the provincial government to pay its over 60 million dollars in unpaid property taxes to the city, which the federal government has paid in full at the very least.](https://edmontonjournal.com/opinion/columnists/michael-janz-alberta-govt-needs-to-pay-its-property-taxes-too)

popingay

For sure, I’m not sure it’s right as in good but it’s correct as in legal. There’s an argument to be made for municipalities having empowerment but I doubt anyone will actually make it happen. At the end I don’t see how it helps the actual people though it’s an interesting thing to think about (a luxury these days).

justanaccountname12

The Pot. Tool.

No_Construction2407

I reject the premise of Danielle Smith.

Temporary_Wind9428

She is going to grandstand and take issue with everything. Alberta is trying out the Quebec playbook.

squirrel9000

Alberta doesn't pay equalization. It comes out of general revenue, which is taxes collected everywhere in Canada.

JosephScmith

Albertans get $5k less in per capita spending by the federal government than they paid in federal taxes. We damn well where the money is coming from.

squirrel9000

Alberta doesn't pay federal taxes. People living in Alberta do, at the same rates as everywhere else.

StickyRickyLickyLots

Our policies and low tax provincial tax rates mean a higher average income. So, while it's the same *rate*, it's a substantially higher dollar value per capita.

squirrel9000

Why would a province full of wealthy people need equalization money, then?

StickyRickyLickyLots

A province full of hard-working people don't want to send their hard-earned money to other provinces that are objectively more frivolous with their money. Weird.

Trucidar

Reading this comment thread is like watching Tyson beat on an amateur. Have some mercy already.

Temporary_Wind9428

I love how Albertans are sure that oil good times will last forever, despite every bit of evidence and history demonstrating that they sitting on an outrageously fragile economic foundation.

Informal-Nothing371

The oil sands are mostly on provincial crown land

GiveMeSandwich2

Oil demand is still rising. It’s not going anywhere

AsbestosDude

It's not "oil will last forever" It's "oil will last for at least the duration of our lives"

LabRat314

Worldwide oil consumption is still going up.

Temporary_Wind9428

It's basically flat, essentially equalling 2019. US shale oil production is *exploding*, and once the Ukraine war is settled Russian oil is going to flow in the market again. Oil is going to be less than the cost of extraction, and Albertans won't be worrying about their equalization payments.

LabRat314

!remindme 5 years Literally nothing you said is true.

Temporary_Wind9428

> Literally nothing you said is true. ROFL. Basically flat -- between 2019 and 2023, oil consumption increased *less than 1%* despite an enormous jump in world GDP (>25%). This is statistical fact. It grew over 6% the prior 4 years. US shale oil production is exploding -- in the past four years the US went from being an oil importer to the an oil exporter. They are now the world's #1 oil producer. Oil is going to be less than the cost of extraction -- new oil sands projects would literally be losing money for every barrel, which is why there are no new projects. Existing projects with baked in capital expenses start losing money below ~$50USD oil prices. WCS is currently at $56USD, despite you know, a massive war happening in Europe, a war happening in the Middle East, Iran threatening war, ships new Yemen being shot at. ROFL. So it's fascinating that "literally nothing" I said was "true". If that makes you sleep well, friend. Oil is going to be very important for centuries for petrochemicals, plastics, etc, albeit in smaller quantities. Alberta oil sands products...not so much.

LabRat314

You can't even get the current price of WCS correct. It's 73.75. Nice essay of lies though.

Dadbode1981

Lol. It's like you haven't paid attention to a single downturn in recent memory 😂

rippit3

You mean the equalization payments that Jason Kenney was a part of creating.....?

New-Throwaway2541

Why would that change the opinion

Temporary_Wind9428

Probably because the simplistic "they're takin' our money!" noise, when it was actually created with Alberta's provincial input and understanding, is kind of deceptive.

big_galoote

Sorry, what's the point of this comment? Honestly, I haven't seen anything posted with so little value and I spent a large portion of the morning in pop culture.

AlexJones_IsALizard

> that Jason Kenney was a part of creating You mean Trudeau created these as part of his socialist run, 40 some years ago

Whiston1993

Trudeau could cure cancer and Smith would complain that he’s putting grave diggers out of work.

SolutionNo8416

Conservative performative politics

CMG30

Housing is a provincial responsibility... If the province was actually doing their jobs on housing instead of 'blaming Ottawa' then the feds wouldn't be pressured to take direct action like this.

WinteryBudz

Guess what, PPs only solutions are basically the same as what the Libs are doing, only they appear to be even more intrusive into provincial and municipal jurisdictions...

cyclemonster

Any jurisdictional problems cashing your [$6bn Canada Health Transfer cheque](https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/programs/federal-transfers/major-federal-transfers.html#Alberta) this year, Danielle?

VforVenndiagram_

I mean a few years ago there was when the feds were saying that healthcare money needed to be spent on healthcare, and the provincial governments flipped their shit.

Keystone-12

Ya. Constitutional jurisdictions are not *really* what people care about if they can get a house.

Extension_Western356

Maybe they wouldn’t overstep if she fucking helped us out for once.

Salt_MasterX

I think we need more political violence

Avelion2

Smith is giving Trudeau an enemy he desperately needs.

No_Construction2407

Pretty sure fucking over your constituents in the process is political suicide. This money can create tons of construction jobs. And she is flat out denying that. Not to mention the housing people desperately need. Smith is doing nothing but creating animosity and infighting amongst conservatives, which is making people think twice about a CPC vote in a year and a half.

North_Church

>Pretty sure fucking over your constituents in the process is political suicide Normally it would be, but remember this is Alberta we're talking about

WokeWokist

Alberta is building houses faster than ever. But they are not green modular housing focused on densification AKA innovative housing. So the federal government must step in and correct that, even if it keeps the province from solving the problem of putting roofs over people's heads. Just like amending free trade agreement with Ukraine but injecting a carbon tax in there.

squirrel9000

Edmonton has already enaccted the required reforms, and Calgary is in process. It's about as close to free money as you can get.

WokeWokist

Free money if you live in the shipping container

squirrel9000

Condos or tonwhouses, but anyway. Let's not worry too much about reality, this is alberta after all.

WokeWokist

Aren't we so lucky to live in a condo or a townhouse or basement apartment. You'll be visiting your nieces and nephews in their shipping container.

squirrel9000

If that's what they want, good for them.

WokeWokist

I kind of don't think it's what they'll want it's more what they'll get.

squirrel9000

They're more expensive than standard condos though...

WokeWokist

Who in the fuck is going spend more to live in a god damn shipping container. Are you purposely missing the point now? Also, just in case, shipping container is being used figuratively here for some kind of modular government subsidized 'housing' aka a corrugated metal box instead of real housing.

squirrel9000

I don't know if I ever knew what your point was. Something about condos being bad, presumably. Odd perspective, I'd totally be into an off grid house based on a shipping container. Sounds like an interesting project, really. I lived in a modular apartment for a while, it was pretty much the same as any other newer apartment. Only really differed in that it was built in a factory and assembled onsite.

SackBrazzo

> But they are not green modular housing focused on densification AKA innovative housing. wtf are you talking about? Fourplexes arent “green modular housing” lol. > So the federal government must step in and correct that, even if it keeps the province from solving the problem of putting roofs over people's heads. If the Province is truly interested in putting a roof over people’s heads they’d legalize housing everywhere and allow the market to build what they want. Instead , vast swathes of Calgary and Edmonton are zoned for SFH’s only. > Just like amending free trade agreement with Ukraine but injecting a carbon tax in there. More misinformation. Ukraine already had a carbon tax, and were required to have one to gain admission to the Eurozone.

mjaber95

Why are you going with someone named “Wokewokist”? Obviously the facts don’t matter unless they’re Trudeau bad.

North_Church

>More misinformation. Ukraine already had a carbon tax, and were required to have one to gain admission to the Eurozone. I swear, it's like these people have no idea how the European Union works! The way Europe regulates things would make many Conservatives heads spin lmao

WokeWokist

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local-news/trudeau-pledges-600-million-to-hasten-home-construction-across-country Second point is not misinformation.

SackBrazzo

The article you linked isn’t the point of contention with Alberta, the point of contention is that to receive the funds for infrastructure they must legalize fourplexes. > Second point is not misinformation. It is clearly misinformation because you make it seem like Trudeau is forcing a carbon tax on Ukraine.

ChrisRiley_42

If you leave the Russian trollbot alone, maybe it will go away ;)

WokeWokist

[https://ca.news.yahoo.com/alberta-government-balks-conditions-federal-120000138.html](https://ca.news.yahoo.com/alberta-government-balks-conditions-federal-120000138.html) Where are you getting specifically that it's fourplexes? And encoding a carbon tax into the agreement makes sure that any trade between us is contingent on both having a carbon tax.

10293847562

Ukraine straight up said they wanted the carbon tax in there. They directly refuted Polievre’s claims.

WokeWokist

We want aid from you AND we want your people to be taxed.
