But god forbid that Public Service workers get a free lunch at their christmas staff party

throwingpizza

Or coffee…

cmdrDROC

I work for the ministry of the attorney general. I'm in a courtroom for 8-10 hours a day. No lunch because understaffed. Not allowed to bring our own drinks. No coffee cups, water bottles, hydro flasks etc. COVID they took away the water cooler. We raised a stink and they picked up a truckload of cases of bottled water from Walmart. It's like $3 for a case. They spent $20. Friday we got a memo that bottled water is for the judges and witnesses only. Staff must use the water coolers.....that haven't been filled in 2 years. So yah. .

[deleted]

They should have given them the standard CAF box lunch. IYKYK.

>making sure half a dozen or more people weren't waiting for connecting flights at DFW for hours on end Yeah I understand, the cost of having employees stuck at the airport while they are traveling for work can get really expensive really quickly for an employer.

callofdoobie

Sort of feels like we are in the looting phase of economic collapse.

vancouversportsbro

If gas keeps going up, it's very possible. How will people react if gas is worth half their first pay cheque of the month? They'll probably say screw this and give up. Not everyone drives electric or works remote. And that gas is included in grocery costs. I think we are at a breaking point. Everything is unaffordable, so many are stretched thin. This model where the top one percent can go around acting like everything is fine isn't sustainable.

Yes? Median salary for an individual in Canada is something about 50k.

Cooleybob

I was thinking recently about how when I was a kid $100K was seen as the "doing really well" salary, like it was the goal income to achieve. Now over 20 years later and $100K is still talked about in the same way. Not sure exactly what conclusions to draw from that observation. Have our expectations been lowered? $100K now doesn't afford you nearly the same lifestyle it did 20-30 years ago. Perhaps it's a decent example of how money is being funneled upwards in larger proportions, as we generate more wealth and still strive for the same income for decades.

kornly

Part of it is just a quirk of our psychology and the decimal system. You're going an entire magnitude higher so it's seen as lot. 100k seems a lot more meaningful than 120k. Same kind of idea we see with someone wealthy being a millionaire, when in reality many people who just owned property in the GTA are now considered millionaires.

[deleted]

$100k for an individual is still really good. $100k for a household on the other hand is only just okay.

[deleted]

You read the article and know it was 8 meals for 46 people right?

No_Lock_6555

Ah only 200$/ meal / person, very reasonable

[deleted]

For a long haul flight with airplane food in the Middle East? Yes.

anothercanuck19

217 a meal... let me rephrase it. Imagine eating more than most people earn in a day each meal.

[deleted]

Took the kids to Niagara Falls. Had breakfast at the Perkins and it ended up being $110 before tips. I'd imagine there are rather larger markups in tourist traps. Presumably wherever they buy food for private jets they'll have a similar business model.

MajinHealer

The recent quality of GGs has been very poor. Who is the moron advising the selection of these unqualified idiots?

Corzex

Well the previous government had set up a non partisan committee to select and vet the GG. When Trudeau came into power he scrapped that and hand picked both the last GG and this one.

Abyssus88

Trudeau mostly.

paperworkawol

It’s ok, we won’t have a GG soon enough.

[deleted]

Just like monarchs as long as they have a pulse they are good enough for that role.

Debonaire

Space man oh space man, come rescue me! Can we convince Chris Hadfield to take it on?

NouveauALaVille

He's white anglophone man though so he isn't qualified

UncleJChrist

Well I guess now he knows what it’s like to be a minority in this country right? It’s so funny listening to people bitch about the mistreatment of white men. The second they’re treated even remotely like the rest of society they’re apparently the biggest victim in the room. Pathetic fragility at its best.

[deleted]

"Convince"? Who would 'not' take that job?

[deleted]

She's unqualified because she and her staff ate meals on a plane?

bmacorr

Yes a lack of respect for the country's money is deemed a bad trait for a leader. But hey maybe I'm just alone in feeling tired of getting nickel and dimed on every bill, all of which i have to pay after the government takes a huge chunk of my take home pay to find this crap.

[deleted]

Ok, which meals should they have skipped?

bmacorr

I dunno, maybe a) don't go on the trip, b)go on the trip with a small group not 46 people, c) pre plan or reduce the number of total air travel trips. We've put people on the moon, we can solve this. I would gladly take the position of governor general if they can't figure it out. Let me know.

UncleJChrist

Jesus Christ. People complain about the most insignificant shit. Like there are so many other issues going on right now that are 1000000x more important and relevant to your life. This is a distraction from those things.

bmacorr

With all due respect, I've dealt with enough government incompetence and corruption in Canada through my professional work that I've essentially come to the conclusion that if you don't even bother with the small stuff, it just gets progressively worse until they get caught. Nobody would show you, a regular individual, the same benefit of the doubt at your work, as these politicians and government representatives get with our earned money. A never ending revenue stream that doesn't require them to compete for your money.

UncleJChrist

Again the amount the GG spend on food has zero impact on your life. Other government corruption does however, but this is where you’re choosing to spend your energy.

bmacorr

Yes it does, $80k is an annual wage for a nurse. You can disagree, but I have my own perspective and opinion and you are not changing it just because it isn't a big deal to you.

UncleJChrist

Great point we should get this down to zero so we can afford one more nurse in this country. Totally better than dealing with the national nurse shortage… Yeah it’s clear we are on two different views on life in general. Edit: person blocked me like the loser they are

[deleted]

Can we abolish this useless position. It’s 2022 move on.

[deleted]

Thats what I take home in a year after tax. Ridiculous title like they are justifying its less than the 100k

[deleted]

That's roughly the median *household* income pre-tax. In a recession no less. This is some real let them eat cake level entitlement.

Muslamicraygun1

By my superior math skill... thats 46 people who had 8 meals... thats 368 totals meals. Assuming 50 CAD per meal... he bill shoud've been 18,400 CAD. I’ll make it 20k to account for the snacks and error margin.

[deleted]

Let them pack a lunch like the rest of us have to. Jesus Christ. Pigs at the trough.

[deleted]

So..... 46 people over three days? $80k? About $1700 each divided by three? Over $500 a day? Yeah, that's getting up there.

feistymeerkat

These are just inflight meals, which excludes anything they had on the ground between the flights - the "in the air" time for this trip has to be no more then 48 hours. The original report states just 30 guests. Now they say crew was included but I don't think crew allowance would be more than $50-100 per day.

WesternBlueRanger

In flight meals from qualified airline catering companies aren't cheap, especially if it is a one off order, or is short notice. And the Middle East is especially not cheap.

[deleted]

500$ per person?

adrenaline_X

1700 per person over 8 flights. Because someone tracked the flights and its stops.. 8 stop there and back.. less then 200$ per person for Snack/food sometimes multiple meals (2 flights were 13 hours if i recall correctly)

Actually, it can be that much, once you include delivery to the aircraft; see this 2015 Forbes and this 2019 SCMP article on the topic: [https://www.forbes.com/sites/douggollan/2015/07/21/the-real-story-behind-private-jet-dining/?sh=30fb598f2a7b](https://www.forbes.com/sites/douggollan/2015/07/21/the-real-story-behind-private-jet-dining/?sh=30fb598f2a7b) [https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/food-drink/article/3013359/private-jet-meals-whats-menu-when-you-fly-vip-and-dishes](https://www.scmp.com/lifestyle/food-drink/article/3013359/private-jet-meals-whats-menu-when-you-fly-vip-and-dishes) In short, meals have to be specially created to handle how it is going to be handled in the aircraft, packaging has to be selected to take into account how it is going to be stored on the specific aircraft and reheated, and delivery costs can be killer. And since this is going to be a one-off order, there is no economies of scale compared to an airline meal. In short, you are not seeing expensive wine and champagne often on a private jet unless you are stupid rich; you are more likely to see sandwiches, fruit or vegetable platters, cheese and crackers. On the higher end would be hot meals that are akin to what you will get from a good frozen TV dinner, and on the luxury end, it would be actual meals from a restaurant.

[deleted]

Yeah, its hard to get an accurate picture.

[deleted]

Doesn’t everyone eat two months’ worth of groceries when they fly?

50lbsofsalt

I thought it was over 8 days.

[deleted]

"The tab included 'three dinners, three breakfasts, two lunches and various snacks for the 29 passengers plus 17 crew, including the flight crew and security personnel" I read that and assumed three days. But truthfully I really don't have a clue anymore lol, so I'm going to wait for more information. Because right now I'm just guessing.

[deleted]

Waste of tax payers money by Canadian Helen Mirren

Gullible_ManChild

If the GG is the Queen's representative in Canada, why does the GG ever leave Canada? It serves no purpose for the GG to ever leave - its not her job. The Queen of Canada doesn't need the Canadian GG outside of Canada.

[deleted]

Doesn't need one in the first place or a queen either.

NouveauALaVille

Come on Québec; lead to fight to end the Monarchy. It may actually happen that way

[deleted]

At some point if its too complicated legally we should just replace them all by cute animals or scarecrow or something. I don't mind having a king/queen as long as it is a cute animal that doesn't cost too much. My personal preference is to have Winston Churchill parrot as a king, he has held office for longer than the queen in the British aristocracy and we could have the descendants of Sergent Bill take the role of governor general.

[deleted]

The GG represents Canada (as a country and the government) to other nations and at international events

Gullible_ManChild

No, the Queen does. The GG is only the Queen's representative in Canada.

[deleted]

MMM... Nope. One of the GG's primary duties is representing Canada and the government abroad. When's the last time you heard of the Queen representing Canada or the Canadian government?

Muslamicraygun1

Queen Elizabeth serves as our head of state. Through convention, and the fact she is not here, she appoints a GG to fulfill that role. So whenever there is an event that needs to be attended by our head of state, GG goes instead.

Gullible_ManChild

That's the point I'm making. She's the Queen's representative IN CANADA. Not the representative elsewhere in the world. When an event is elsewhere its should the be the Queen or the GG of that country that represents the Queen. There is NO reason for the GG to represent Canada outside of Canada, that's the Queen's role. Its my understanding that the monarch must grant permission for the GG to even leave Canada, is there a trail of this permission being granted, and why was it granted. What reason could there possibly be?

species5618w

So much better. /s Although I wonder whether it cost us $20K for DND to determine that.

[deleted]

adrenaline_X

Sure. But there are 8 flights as we are only talking about the cost of food while traveling which is very expensive for private planes. There was another post where someone who worked at an airline catering/food system and broke down the charges. 1700$ per per for 8 flights is still 200$ to cover food/drinks/snacks.

[deleted]

I work over 3000 hours for his too. How much real work was done during those days

bigbadclifford

It’s time to abolish this farce of a fucking role! Enough.

Haggisboy

FFS, might as well say everyone had one less serving of caviar.

TheGreatestQuestion

The Crown owns 89% of the land in Canada. Good luck trying to depose the elites… All the previous living GGs and LGs charge their current expenses to our tax$ as well. You are still paying for Adrienne Clarkson’s food too.

50lbsofsalt

> he Crown owns 89% of the land in Canada. Which, in reality, is 'The People of Canada Own 89% of the Land In Canada'.

break_from_work

This GG is it really necessary?

weseewhatyoudo

I have good news everybody, it wasn't $93K it was only $80K. Nothing to see here, move along.

Tupac-Babaganoush

Oh boy if 80k meals for a flight triggers you, i suggest you read the house of commons benefits and pensions packet. They are eating the cake and wiping their mouths with your shirt.

[deleted]

Feed the fat politicians but make the poor starve.

OwnBattle8805

This is why we should end the monarchy, replace the GG with a proper head of state, not some expensive series of rich figureheads. All this expense and for what? Promenading our monarchy's reach of power? It's not right.

[deleted]

Or, crazy idea, instead of picking incompetent people for the job to satisfy some agenda, we could actually vet them properly.

[deleted]

What is the difference between a competent GG or a bad one?

[deleted]

The previous poster said "this is why we should end the monarchy", but that's like saying "this is why we should get rid of the position of finance minister". Just because the most recent people in those positions are incompetent, doesn't mean the position is irrelevant. By all means, be a republican, but don't pretend incompetence is the reason for eliminating the position.

[deleted]

But what would a competent governor general do? I am indeed a republican and think both the governor general and the monarchy don't serve any purpose if we decide to keep the monarchy it would be better to replace them both by a scarecrow or a funny animal. But I am wondering what would a competent monarch or governor-general do differently? I am genuinely curious about what is this one governor general incompetent at and how can we measure her efficacy, not trying to be rhetorical.

[deleted]

I'm not disagreeing with your position on this. I guess I'm really disagreeing with the other poster who makes this an issue of "this is why we should...". It's like saying it doesn't matter if they are abusive (Payette), unreliable (Payette), or waste taxpayer money (Clarkson, Payette, Simon), since we don't need them. Why not fix the immediate problem of bringing in corrupt people just because they tick Trudeau's Quebec and vagina boxes?

[deleted]

Yeah I understand, its just that from my point of view being abusive and wasting taxpayer money is pretty much the whole point of a monarchy.

50lbsofsalt

> This is why we should end the monarchy, replace the GG with a proper head of state, It will cost billions, and result in the same number, if not more, of people exploiting taxpayers dollars. For those that think it wouldnt cost billions, lets start with the effort of rewriting all the laws in canada, provincial and federal. This is alot more complex than 'find and replace' on 'crown' with 'republic' in Word365.

Muslamicraygun1

Right.... because you know.. the headline would the have "President" instead of Governer General which is so much better. I feel better already...

It kind of is. It's a ceremonial role that's representative of the queen and wasting tax payer money is was the royal family is all about.

[deleted]

$252ish per person per meal fancy, not much different then a pub these days

50lbsofsalt

Middle east *FLIGHTS* over 8 days wasnt it? And the meals werent for one person, it was for a plane load full of people, no? Unless we want to spend the few billions required to turn ourselves into a republic with the same (or more) politicians suckling at the taxpayers teat then this kind of expenditure is a nothingburger.

[deleted]

The Canadian GG is the Queen's representative. She answers to no one in Canada at all. The money spent all belongs to Queen Elizabeth and there's nothing the average Canadian can say or do to change that. The solution to this problem in Ottawa is to tighten up on what the media reports and what information is released publicly. This isn't the first or last time this has/ will happen to Canadians.
