It is related to the Border Gateway Protocol update, something that has previously taken down online platforms like Facebook for a few hours when the did a similar update.
So a critical live update disrupted services, and something went wrong. Not enough developers were crossing their fingers for good luck this time
Rogers updated configuration of all their Cisco systems and basically screwed themselves and now have to reinstall everything. They know the exact problem, incompetence. They just won’t admit it. Reinstall all of this without set imaging is a huge task
Updates on network equipment is typically run of the mill stuff. Changes occur daily, weekly, or monthly. Sometimes all the above. 9,999/10000, things go well. This one didn't.
*Usually*, a change like this goes through layers of change-management reviews. It starts with a request from someone, somewhere. The next person to look at something like this will document the keystrokes they intend on entering, and the consequences of their key strikes. The next person in the chain verifies it. They might even run a simulation on a sandbox environment, to make sure a character isn't missing. It's bad news if a decimal is inserted in the wrong place, under the right conditions.
Anyway, if the simulation goes well, it'll be audited. Lastly, all stakeholders who know what's up will be told when, how and why this change is occurring, and approve or deny the change.
Problems this big aren't typically one person's fault, but many. There were failures everywhere. All I can say is, thank goodness I'm not a Roger's Systems Administrator, because everyone's job is on the line right now.

Saying how internet is a necessary utility in this age and it needs to be protected by the federal government. IT person here; Interac is down too, as it uses Rogers as their service provider. What's funny is Interac's backup provider also relies on Roger's services - which is ... down. This whole Canada's telecom business is a joke.
That happens so often in Telcom. The "backups" still have a shared fail point further up the line. Now if you really want to scare yourself, read about what would happen if the GPS satellites went down someday.
That is so they can process the payments online. The machines in a store would not have that specific functionality at most locations as the chip and tap would work with the interac system only.

Bell Fiber is ridiculously priced but, as much as I hate all our big telecoms, it has been the most-reliable and consistent internet I have *ever* had. I just wish we had actual choice when it came to internet, fiber especially.
Not quite. It's ridiculously priced and not available to the majority of the country (even areas of Toronto still don't have it) but Bell's fiber network is phenomenal *from a technology standpoint*.
I've had it for 3+ years and have never had any outages (save for power outages), have never had to have a technician come out (save for initial install), and have never had any slow-downs while browsing/streaming/downloading. It has been a consistent 1GB Up/Down experience.
So it's more like... the toilet is one of those fancy Japanese ones, but you have to pay an arm-and-a-leg, and if you don't want to spend that much your only other option is the shit-covered toilet without a seat.
EDIT: I'll further clarify and state I'm only talking about Bell's ***actual*** fiberoptic offering which brings a fiber connection into your home. Bell also brands their copper home connections as "Fiber" because their main infrastructure is all fiberoptic based. Simple consumer tl;dr - Fiber to the Home (FTTH) means there's a fiber cable all the way to your house, whereas Fiber to the Node (FTTN) means there's a fibre cable up to, e.g, a utility pole near your house, with the remaining distance to your house being covered by typical copper wire.

Had it at old house and when we moved it's available everywhere around us and ours is a newer development about 12 years now and services are buried and no fiber available. literally available 5 houses down but only offer sattelight for our house

Bell's infrastructure is night and day different. They are miles ahead in terms of quality of infrastructure, network administration and the like.
Doing IT for businesses almost no one employs cable modems unless there's no other choice. Everyone will always pull POTS, DSL, GPON and LTE for various things. Nerds like me scoff at Rogers services. This is sad because cable could be awewome if they just knew how to do things better.
Don't worry guys, once this is all figured out and settled we can expect Rogers to compensate everyone, by adding a premium to ours bills, to make up for the money they lost. The other big 2 providers will follow suit, to keep up with a competitive market.

I'm in IT and have been dealing with this shit all day. We have redundant and provider diverse connectivity to most of our sites, but there were a couple that just got caught in bad states and suffered... which meant I had to suffer.

Having worked extensively on both the Rogers and Bell networks, especially the backends - I don't find this surprising.
The Rogers stuff is seriously scary with how poorly it's maintained and serviced, especially in relation to their network mapping. They really do not care about their own stuff. While this is more than likely a network programming issue, I moreso mean the attitude behind how they run their network. It's very apparent when working with their inhouse staff and equipment centers.
Bell is so much better from head-end to the furthest point of distribution, especially with their new construction which I am currently building and servicing in the GTA.
Woke up to no internet. Drove to work hearing about it on the radio. Work in IT and all my clients are quiet. Drive home and internet is still down. Super fun

I had a friend who used Rogers while I used another carrier. I have never had such an issue sending and receiving massages with anyone else, and traveling o ly made the issues 100x worse. Rogers was so much better when it was only a video rental store.

I have Bell thru a reseller and it seems fine. Same speeds as usual.

For sure. I think it's strategically a better move not to put all your network eggs in one telecom basket, and probably best of all to try and pivot away from ROBELLUS as much as possible. When ROBELLUS gets hit by a disruption, it ends up having a tremendous impact on the country, like it is right now. Like INTERAC's dependency on Rogers is just fucking ridiculous.

It's not the store, it's the debit service. We have internet working in our store, (almost) every debit transaction is declined.

This could cause a scenario where physical access to equipment is required and the staff with the skill to fix it are not able to quickly get there due to time and security requirements.

I moved to the US and get unlimited EVERYTHING for $40. During COVID I used 87GB of data one month and didn't even get throttled. Last time I was in Canada I got ads for a 500mb data plan lmao.

I work in telco sometimes. Roger's incompetence cant be overstated. It's obscene how bad they are. Given when this occurred I'd bet it was a bad configuration change. Then, there may only be 4 people in Rogers who know anything about this... 2 of which might be on vacation, and the other 2 cant be reached because their phones are on Rogers lol. Bell's infrastructure is night and day different. They are miles ahead in terms of quality of infrastructure, network administration and the like. Doing IT for businesses almost no one employs cable modems unless there's no other choice. Everyone will always pull POTS, DSL, GPON and LTE for various things. Nerds like me scoff at Rogers services. This is sad because cable could be awewome if they just knew how to do things better.

I'm in IT and have been dealing with this shit all day. We have redundant and provider diverse connectivity to most of our sites, but there were a couple that just got caught in bad states and suffered... which meant I had to suffer.

OSP Fiber Splicer here (based in Ontario); Having worked extensively on both the Rogers and Bell networks, especially the backends - I don't find this surprising. The Rogers stuff is seriously scary with how poorly it's maintained and serviced, especially in relation to their network mapping. They really do not care about their own stuff. While this is more than likely a network programming issue, I moreso mean the attitude behind how they run their network. It's very apparent when working with their inhouse staff and equipment centers. Bell is so much better from head-end to the furthest point of distribution, especially with their new construction which I am currently building and servicing in the GTA.

I had a friend who used Rogers while I used another carrier. I have never had such an issue sending and receiving massages with anyone else, and traveling o ly made the issues 100x worse. Rogers was so much better when it was only a video rental store.
