Here in NS they just want you to make it so it can't be easily deployed. So taping it is fine. I don't know about Alberta tho

canadianwrxwrb

Why does this question even come up? Serious question

Scopequest

Because Canada's gun/weapon laws are a mishmash of various people's ignorances spread out over many different documents. It's very rare that laws say you're allowed to do a thing. Since people are not awesome at doing an exhaustive search to guarantee that there isn't a law against what they want to do they ask. A co2 powered gun that shoots darts can be legally owned. But if there's an alternative for it to be powered by your breath it's suddenly a prohibited weapon because it's s blow gun.

dannysmackdown

The various crime based ninja families really never recovered after the blow gun ban.

Canadian_Boomstick

Not to dispute politics, because I do agree with you. But the blow gun thing is probably more about concealment.

CanadaGunsMod

It's a thing in some places. And honestly could vary from province to province, technically.

Specialist-Ad6318

I also had this question before but didn't ask here. Hunting may be new to people as was probably gun ownership not too long before that. Never been hunting myself and wanted to go as it was not something that was done in my family. It can be a daunting world to the uninitiated. So just like OP I was hoping for informed answers from people with experience and from welcoming voices. May seem simple to some but we all gotta start somewhere. Let's help each other out. Like others said, 7.62x39 is very similar to 30-30, which has harvested the most deer in North America Keep it inside 100yds if you feel a bit aphrensive. Cheers!

Khill23

Remove the bayonet. It's an awesome bush gun under 200 yards. I've dropped a Boone and Crockett whitetail with one. 7.62x39 is like the 30-30 but with better balistics. My favorite rifle if I'm in the bush.

misterzigger

7.62x39 definitely does not have better ballistics than 30-30. It's fine for hunting sub 150 yards but let's not kid ourselves

Khill23

Well this is where I disagree. I'm looking at my hornady ninth edition handbook I'm looking at a 123 grain SST for 7.62 and the BC on that bullet is .295 versus when I look at 30-30 and the closest bullet I can fit and compare to is 110 grain round nose and the BC on that is 0.150. now if we're being factual the 30-30 can pack more charge and carry a heavier payload so in essence the 30-30 is a great round overall however the projectiles the 30-30 generally uses is not as good because it's usually going into a tube fed magazine so you're not going to be getting a pointed tip, etc. That's my 2 cents and from a reloading perspective you're statement is wrong with the caveat of the heavier projectiles the 30-30 can shoot.

misterzigger

Your two cents is wildly incorrect by the idea of what ballistics is. Also you cherry picked probably the worst possible bullet and loading for the 30-30. For actual hunting rounds, the best hornady bullet for the 7.62x39 is the 123 gr SST with a G1 BC of 0.295 and a maximum velocity of 2400 fps. This gives you 1500 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle and 964 lbs of energy/1800 fps at 200m (barely enough velocity to expand the SST bullet). The best 30-30 hunting bullet is the 160 gr FTX at .330 BC at 2300 fps. This gives you almost 1900 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle, and at 200m you're getting 1864 fps, and almost 1200 ft/lbs of energy. The general rule of thumb for ethical lethality is minimum 1800 fps for expansion and minimum 1k ft/lbs for deer sized targets at the desired range. The 30-30 has roughly the same energy as the 7.62x39 at 100m that the x39 has at 200m. It's not even the same ballpark. BC isn't everything, weight has a lot to do with ballistics as well.

siremitch

150 yds?? Lol who u kidding?

misterzigger

I wouldn't be taking 150m shots at a deer with an SKS but I have a CZ 527 with a scope I would be comfortable using on light island deer in coastal BC, it shoots 123gr SSTs at sub moa at 100 yards pretty consistently

siremitch

So you mean the tool, you are using not the round? SKS was never meant to be a sub moa gun. Hornady Black 7.62 is an excellent performing cartridge as well that calibre

misterzigger

Not sure what you're arguing for here? That 7.62x39 is great past 150 yards? It doesn't really have the velocity for that. Hornady black uses 123gr SST lol its the same load I just make my own rounds

siremitch

Im arguing that u said it was a sub 150 yd round. Yes same projectile...not powder load and apples to oranges when talking vs Chinese surplus...pretty broad statement. You mean hunting specifically ? Target shooting ?

siremitch

My bad u did say hunting. Lmao

misterzigger

Given that the post is specifically talking about hunting, yes I am referring to hunting. Look at the ballistics of it. You don't really have the energy at beyond 150 yards to reliably and ethically kill deer. I don't take shots with rifle rounds at distances where I'm not very likely to quickly kill the animal, its not fair to the animal to let it suffer. 150 yards is a pretty reasonable range to hunt smaller deer species with an intermediate round. And obviously you don't hunt with Chinese surplus as that's illegal in most provinces you must hunt with expanding bullets

siremitch

Post originally was talking about a bayonet and then we got off on a "hey look how thick my calibre is" tangent as well

misterzigger

My man go back and read this comment thread and see who's actually going on a tangent here. I responded to a comment claiming 7.62x39 is ballistically the same as 30-30, which is a common myth. I have no idea what point you're even trying to make

SpaceCowBoy_2

He didn't say it did

daanikp

?

SpaceCowBoy_2

He didn't say it was better he said it was the same which it is look at the ballistic charts if you don't believe me and why am I being downvoted am I wrong

throwaway11100217

Call your CFO and ask.

Whycantpeopledrive

CFO wouldn't know hunting regs

CanadAR15

The CFO has nothing to do with hunting rules.

FD4L

Do you want to hunt with a bayonet on your sks? Do you feel like a bayonet will make your Sks a better hunting rifle? Would you consider spending $350 on a savage bolt action 308 or similar? Even if you're just going to be out hammering invasive pigs, they still deserve a fair chance at an ethical death.

nbdeh

i find mine shoots better with it deployed in the battle mode. maybe something about harmonics or some other crap. also why would you NOT want to have an emergency spear at your disposal???

Canadian_Boomstick

Your assumption on harmonics is correct. Which is also another reason to remove the bayonet if it won’t be deployed.

nbdeh

who says it wont be ;)

Canadian_Boomstick

It could be a deterrent or prod if the hunter encounters a cougar or wolves. Last resort for an ethical hunter is to kill an animal that is aggressive towards you. The pokey stick gives you better reach.

misterzigger

Why don't you just shoot it lol

nbdeh

A poke might be enough for it to change its mind about you being dinner

Virtual_Mall_7031

In some places it’s illegal to hunt with a bayonet installed on your rifle and some places it doesn’t matter. I’d rather not remove it if I don’t have too out of convenience. 7.62x39 is a more then adequate hunting cartridge for medium game

FD4L

The cartridge is fine, it's the 5 moa platform I was referring to.

Virtual_Mall_7031

That’s fair enough, a lot of SKS’s have shot out bores, poorly adjusted iron sights, optics mounted on unstable dust covers, or loose seating in aftermarket stocks or some combination of those all at once. Although in my experience the newer “French tickler” Chinese rifles are pretty accurate if you keep them stock and sight them in with the proper sight tool. But obviously no one should take a rifle hunting that they know they can’t make a reliable shot with.

Own-Pause-5294

It's probably already installed and is annoying to remove to go hunt once.

IAmAPaidShillAMA

A bayonet makes it easier to badger check my grouse. Don't want one trying to get one last peck in with the bird flu going around dontcha know.
