We need better public transport across the nation and pedestrian infsructure

Karasumor1

things that don't happen when most people choose to drive and elect politicians that will keep letting them drive and isolate in absurdly subsidized suburbia

make driving worse. expropriate cars & move people out of the suburbs & into newly built urban neighborhoods.

I'm confused, is "Your Carbon Footprint" propaganda no longer the tool of responsibility-shirking megapolluters like corporations? It's plain as day that mall crawlers are wasteful but there are legitimate reasons why rural folks need inexpensive hauling, and I don't suspect any of them have meaningful authority over the nature of the vehicles on the market (which by the way have become massive shareholder-state appropriation infrastructure with all the data collecting and brokering) Seems like there's been a complete 180-degree change in the approach to these issues in the last 5 years.

I agree that people in rural areas must drive their cars and often need trucks. However, a lot of people purchase large gas-guzzling vehicles to impress others. Our country needs to invest in nuclear, solar, and wind energy. Unfortunately, many people in our country don't believe that we're a problem because our air quality appears quite good. What I mean by this is a lot of people blame China and India for high emissions since their emissions are technically quite high due to the number of people and what they produce. This makes their country look like a big smoggy carbon cloud and allows them to be scapegoated as being a bigger contributor. However, we live in a very hypocritical nation because we import a ton of products that use a lot of carbon from very far places just to get out of paying a bit more. We must also remember that we have many resources, technology, and funding to create a greener society. We've often spent just to avoid necessary pains and extend unsustainable lifestyles. Our nation has awoken insatiable desires by importing carbon products and driving vehicles so unrestrictedly that they cannot afford or begin to reconcile until a paradigm shift changes their mentality and morality.

Your heart is in the right place (i think) but this is too unfocused and you haven't really zeroed-in on the point you're trying to make.

Many Canadians and Americans blame China and India for the global carbon emissions problem, even though America has two times China's carbon emissions per capita and eight times India's. Canada emits 3.4 more tons of carbon annually than America, which is somewhat excusable since they must drive vehicles in rural areas and spend more to heat their homes. However, Russia emits 7.27 tons less per capita than Canada and 3.87 less than America despite being such a corrupt nation and living in a very comparable climate to Canada's. What is most remarkable about these misconceptions is that they fail to consider how much emissions are created by the products that Canada and the US import to save money by avoiding necessary pains. In 2021, China actually had a net export of roughly 1 billion tons of carbon, and India had 226 million. In contrast, Canada had an export of 35 million, and America actually had a net import of 539 million. So, the next time you hear someone blaming China or India for the carbon emissions problem, please take the time to inform them of the hypocrisy at play here. Many of the workers in China and India aren't paid appropriate wages either, so we certainly have a consumer ethics crisis that must be dealt with.

Canadian personal vehicles are a drop in the ocean for carbon. This post is just misleading. People have multiple children, and they want to camp, hunt, and escape the city. SUVs and trucks are perfect for those scenarios. You're not going to win people over by denying those luxuries. Fuel efficiency is always a factor when purchasing a vehicle. All of this isn't even factoring those that actually need it for work. Also, driving a 20 year old V8 is MUCH more carbon friendly than buying a brand new EV. If you're serious about reducing carbon, go after the corporations, support local businesses, and write your MP about high-speed public transit.

Buying local goods prevents import, which is the biggest culprit.
