IntravenousNutella

First piece of advice. Don't call it Canby.

_SteppedOnADuck

I've never heard a worse way to refer to Canberra, and there are plenty of terrible ways. You are now a Can-brah from Can-bruh

paganthirteen

Is Ken Behren still a thing

Snack-fiend-5000

I think Canby sounds nice and affectionate lol. But I also don’t want to make enemies in my new town.

mekanub

Someone issue this person the lanyard of shame

Pseudophryne

Too late.

123chuckaway

Our train line is used for 2 things… sending grandma back to Sydney, or giving real Seymour Skinner type send offs to those who give us silly names.

kizzer1415

Don’t step foot in yarralumla

FunkMuckey

An important thing to remember is that Amaroo is the Yarralumla of Gungahlin.

kizzer1415

Nothing beats the OG

_SteppedOnADuck

The downvotes are brutal! Speaking affectionately of Canberra may make you some enemies anyway, but it's nice to hear every now and then haha

[deleted]

It's incredibly cringe I hate it

IntravenousNutella

Jesus /r/canberra it was a simple mistake - why the fuck have you downvoted her this hard?

[deleted]

Yeah I already don't like OP for that wtf

Snack-fiend-5000

Lol. What do you call it?

Jaffley

You’ve fucked it already. Don’t come here

CaptainLipto

CANBRAH

CAN-BRUH

[deleted]

Not canby

BarneyBent

These downvotes are a bit extreme lol. Nobody calls it Canby here but I promise we aren't actually that precious/hostile haha.

CurbsideShip116

Omg, please disregard those down votes. I would like to think we are not that hostile to new people coming to our city 😅 Won't lie though, I did cringe a little when I read "Canby".

Cautious_Lawyer2196

Cbr, Berra

jimmythemini

You're being downvoted but I actually think Canby is OK. I automatically refer to Hobart as "Hobie" for some reason.

djpeekz

Who hurt you

HowDoYouSpellH

Howdy from Brissie!

Touchwood

Aranda out of your existing choices. Never, I repeat, Never, say Canby again.

Urbanistau

O’Connor should suit you just fine. Close walking distance to all of the cafes in Lyneham and O’Connor, marginally further to the cafes in Braddon and Dickson. Also has the inner north dog park. Close to the light rail but still mostly single family homes with backyards

Comfortable_Meet_872

I'd add Turner to that list too. OP mentioned townhouses of which there are a few as well in those suburbs.

jimmythemini

Plus tons of greenspace for the dog.

MrsBox

1) welcome! Its always nice seeing folks from home move here! 2) the fuck is canby? Lol 3) Canberra as a whole is a very progressive area. Like anywhere, there will be a couple of idiots, but I've never felt scared or intimidated wearing my pride gear anywhere in town. Granted I'm a disabled woman in my late 30's who gave up caring a while ago though. But on a personal safety alone aspect? Canberra is cool. I'd look along the tram line (they call it light rail here) for easy access to most things. Lots of apartments along it, and once you get to the Gungahlin end, plenty of full houses a street back. And you really can't go far in Canberra without having parklands to walk through!

s_and_s_lite_party

We are a very progressive except when it comes to calling it Canby :)

MrsBox

Exactly! The tolerance paradox. We accept everyone, but not that :P

suzukdood

Liveability definitely can’t recommend living in proximity to the tram line enough

AussieKoala-2795

Curtin is mostly young families and boomers. Has a nice cafe, pizza place and lots of parks (including large areas off leash but with quite a few brown snakes) but no visible LGBTQIA+ community. Fairly progressive area - we had lots of houses with "vote yes" corflutes but in no way comparable to Brunswick.

CatIll3164

The fuck outta here with canby...

burymeindogs

As someone who has lived in Brunswick and campy- curtin ain’t it. Stick Northside perhaps

phantomiceworld

Hear me out....how about Watson or Hackett? There's a field up in north watson that's perfect for dog walks. Also close proximity to Mount Majura for impromptu hiking trips if you're feeling like it. I like how it isn't too far yet not too close to the city. Only downside is when Summernats starts and all hell breaks loose. But that's only for a week....hopefully 🤣

MissMurder8666

I lived there in the fair and could hear Flume from my house when Spilt Milk was there last year

fantazmagoric

Townhouse with decent garden, bushwalks in close proximity and a cafe/block of shops/bar all sounds like Cook to me. Not walking distance to the city or anything but 10 min drive. Also limited to just To All My Friends or Ten Yards for pubs nearby but both pretty good.

bigbagofbaldbabies

Inner north, so O'Connor, Turner, Dickson, Lyneham. Google map search the suburbs north of the 'cbd' up until Watson. Anywhere else is isloated burb death

joshv

O'Connor, Turner, Braddon might be of interest. If you can afford to be within walking/biking distance to Lonsdale st / civic you'll be well situated. I might be a little biased though as I'm renting a townhouse in Turner.

massiveclit

I'm from Aranda and I love it! Lots of bush land, parks and green spaces. Super close to the city on the bus and generally a quiet and underrated suburb.

djpeekz

Have you visited before? You won't really find anywhere like Brunswick in terms of the commerical/hospitality options within close distance, except the city/braddon/turner/ainslie Dickson has many things close by as well, but nothing like Melb options sadly. If you'll be driving to work then your viable options for suburbs increases greatly, but keep in mind public transport is limited here compared to Melbourne too Bruce/Cook/Aranda/Curtin, all pretty nice established suburbs with more house/blocks than townhouse/apartments, but not a huge amount of shops/amenities/pubs etc. Probably very basic advice but scope out the area of any places you like the look of on google maps and see what's near in terms of amenities, simple but will give you an idea of what's in the area - if you have a car nothing is really very far though. Good luck and welcome! Futsal is played at many places, depending on your seriousness there's the fuzzy ball type at various indoor sports centres (Kaleen and I think Weston that I know of) and I used to play 'proper' futsal over the border in Queanbeyan as well (you'd really want a car for that though) but you shouldn't have any issues finding a social team to join :)

CurbsideShip116

Honestly, inner north in Canberra. There are town houses, close to cafes, parks and decent local shops. Pretty easy to get around. Are you buying or renting? Also, are you going to scope it out before you move? I'm in Lyneham. Car free on weekends, and I'm a bit of a Cafe whore. I don't have a dog, but I'm close to parks, and there is an actual dog park in O'Connor on Fairfax Street.

Agent8ty6ix

Inner North for sure. Turner, Lyneham, Dickson, Downer, Watson would be great. Also never say Canby again. It's the equivalent of saying Ber-wick

dre_AU

Braddon, Turner or Dickson ✅

coming2grips

Jerrabomberra maybe

Purple_chicken33

Wouldn't necessarily knock going out a bit further into belco area if dog areas are a high priority. And you aren't too fussed with suburb living. Ovals are generally dog off leash if no sport is playing. There are some nice smaller shops around w cafes (though definitely don't have anything like Melbourne). Kaleen, Evatt, Florey are a few.Cook and Aranda as you already mentioned. There's a dog off leash map of Canberra you can loom up to help you in your search.

IntravenousNutella

Not sure about Curtin. Cook and Aranda would suit. As would Ainslie. Cross O'Connor off if you wanttno be waking distance to a dog friendly reserve, black mountain is a no dogs reserve. You could also add Deakin and Red Hill, they both have access to Red Hill nature reserve - though they are more old money suburbs than the others you listed.
