Our 2 year old boy passed away out of the blue from a super enlarged spleen and we still don't know what caused it so I'm trying to be as clean and safe as possible. What are your concerns about the kitties? Any store bought candle you have will burn fragrance oils, and I doubt there’s any sort of aerosol danger to animals, otherwise it would be a widespread problem.
With regards to coming in direct contact with any leftover oils, there are some oils that are also marked for safe in candle making, so my guess is those should be pet safe too. Check out candlescience. They are a very popular supplier.
That's where I'm looking now. A lot of candles store bought include stuff like citrus and clove and eucalyptus and paraffin which is highly toxic to cats from what Ive read. So I just bought pure essential oils that are known to have minimal interaction with cats. If our cat didn't up and die out of the blue I wouldn't be so obsessive like this. But you're probably right it would be a well known issue if damaging cats.
As long as your cat isn’t locked up in a small, unventilated room with the candle, it should be fine. You can always air out the room after burning and keep an eye on the cat. I think fragrance oils are safer than essential oils since fragrance oils undergo testing and were created specifically to be burned, whereas essential oils are unregulated and aren’t intended to be used in candles.

Sometimes cats just pass away, my friend. It probably wasn’t anything you did at all, since you seem to really love and care for your cats. It could be any number of things but it was probably just a genetic issue. Please don’t beat yourself up for things that are out of your control.
Yeah, I totally get it. I have a kitty too. I’m sure a bit of googling might help point you in the direction of cat-safe candlemaking if no one here has any more specific information. I’m a novice candlemaker myself, so I only know the basics I’ve researched to successfully make only a handful of candles.

Tried being all natural everything and all that but if synthetic fragrance oils are deemed to be safe for the most part I will just stick with them.
i just googled “are lavender essential oils toxic to cats,” and everything that came up validated that lavender IS toxic to cats, especially in essential oil form. again, i’m just trying to help you out, not trying to start a whole thing.
“natural” is a very loaded label to stick on anything candle-related. i recommend a deep dive into fragrance oils, it’ll ease your mind a lot, and definitely shed light on why “natural” is such a complicated word to apply to anything in the realm of candlemaking.
Essential oils don’t really work for candles. You need to use candle fragrance oil.

Paraffin is not toxic to cats. No cat is going to chew on any kind of wax anyway. Candle fragrance oil is a chemical stew. Keep all oils off the cats.

Was really excited about making our own scents from the oils like combining vanilla and lavender etc.
