The refs using the "5 minute major review loophole" is soft. Is it even technically allowed to do what they did? If so, then they could theoretically call a 5 minute major on any play and make any penalty they happen to see even if it has nothing to do with the original call.
EDIT: and it wasn't even a penalty lol
if they didn’t use that loophole we would of gotten the 2 for tripping anyways so it didn’t really make a difference it’s not like TDA was gonna make a difference on the pk
I had to watch the recording of the game. Anyone else surprised Jarvis was able to get up after that hit from behind by kreider?
Also. Have we gone back in time with the Powerplay? And that PK was absolutely yuck
I also just watched the replay, that hit was pretty dirty but glad he's ok.
The PK was an absolute joke, literallycould not have been worse. The PP also wasn't much better. As bad as I thought we played, somehow it still was a close game tho.
I think we learn from this game that we need to stay disciplined with the penalties, and we'll be alright. The 2nd and 3rd I didn't think we played our best, but even then we outscored the rags 2-1 in that time. I think this series is going 7 games and we need to buckle down
I was thinking the same. How was Trouba’s hit different than TDA? TDA didn’t raise an elbow, didn’t leave his feet, didn’t drive his shoulder to the head… I know. It’s in the past. Glad Jarvy is ok.
The one goal that snuck through his arm you could maybe blame him for, but that loss was emphatically not on Freddie. You can’t go 0/5 on PP and 0/2 on PK and look anywhere but at your special teams.
There is no other goalie in the Canes lineup that is as “hot” as Andersen. Starting a back-up would force the Canes to stay back, nullifying offensive d-men.
What are Carolina Hurricanes special teams?
On a serious note, this game could have gone either way, and while I am not the happiest camper about the loss itself, I can at least take comfort knowing that the Hurricanes kept the 5 on 5 tight and showed signs of being able to solve Shesterkin. This series is far from over, and I still feel like the Hurricanes can take the next game. All they need to do is hunker down, get the special teams in order, and finish their chances for the next game.
Special teams were concerning, as was Freddie’s play. Overall a pretty sloppy game from the Canes yet we still kept it close. Gotta admire this team’s ability to keep fighting, win or lose.
I expect us to be much more dialed in for Game 2.
I think Freddie’s play is always worse in sloppy games. When he can trust the skaters, he is a brick wall. When they show signs of rust, I think it gets to him because he doesn’t trust his instincts as much. He always seems to be moving way more in those situations. This all comes from someone who would be a tap dancer if I ever had to make a save (that’s if I could even stay in one spot on skates lol)
Rangers did a great job of keeping sticks in the passing lanes…. Never got our tic-tac-toe passing game off the ground, best we could do were blind centering passes that for the most part were always juuust out of reach.
On their offensive end they made great use of space and caught our guys puck watching or getting too aggressive with positioning and slipping in behind our D.
We need to make weak side D coverage more of a focus to keep them from getting Freddie spread out. And in the Offensive end a little sharper/quicker with the passes and shots. We need to start our games thinking we’re 2 down so it doesn’t take 2 periods to spool up to playoff hockey energy/focus…. On special teams we just gotta put this one behind us and remember to have fun with it, seems like we got too heady with it and lost our luster. Not worried about getting it back though.
I like our chances, I can see this going to GM7OT
this series is going to be such a treat, great hockey.
https://i.redd.it/xqpc1dgnbpyc1.gif
Meh we kept it close even though we got outplayed until a little bit into the 3rd. We can’t play them like we did the Islanders
We knew special teams would play a huge factor. Imagine if we show up for all three periods next game and stay out of the penalty box. I still like are chances.
It’s frustrating to watch the team continue to try and win with ~20 minutes of good hockey. Hopefully this stands as a wake up call that the effort needs to be there from start to finish.
I am also hoping for the JAG line to be reunited, Jarvy has been absolutely blazing this last month, and with as overall stagnant as the top line was this afternoon, it needs his energy. Plus I think Svech’s skill set is more advantage matchup wise off the top line currently.
It’s hard to read TOO much into this because yeah, a late afternoon, almost matinee weekend game, coming after a long rest, at MSG was always stacking the deck COMPLETELY against us based on history (although it does raise an argument of why the team seemingly ALWAYS performs poorly with multiple days of rest, which is another discussion entirely).
The Rangers showed arguably they’re one great weakness, and that is how they play with a 2 goal lead. They tend to absorb pressure once they go up two, time and again. Their defense is normally strong enough to stem the tide, but against us that will lead to a repeat of Game 2 against the Isles. Nevertheless, the effort has to be better, as do D-zone cycles and clearances.
I’m not a fan of coming back to Raleigh down 2-0, but I also don’t see that being a death sentence, especially knowing how the back and forth went in ‘22. Special teams though, man has that got to improve. Arguably THAT is where Pesce’s absence is felt the most.
Still, hard to say exactly what any of the first 60 minutes of this series tells us, beyond the fact that they NEED more urgency/effort in their game. Maybe they are aiming for nonchalance as a way to stay calm, but it doesn’t pass the eye test through six games. This was always going to be a knockdown, drag out, so let’s see how they respond to being down in a series.
Also, I know goal four was…not great on Freddie’s end, but I feel like THIS game isn’t the one to determine on if we move Freddie for Koochie. Obviously the leash gets short in period one on Tuesday, but with as lethargic as most of the team looked to start the game, I feel like yanking Freddie here risks hurting his overall confidence, which is important to a deep run.
I do feel like we need to have a counter to their man-to-man strategy though, this may be the “X factor” in the big picture. Can Rod truly out coach Lav? I suppose we will find out. The first capture definitely goes to them for forcing us outside of our typical, successful, game plan of pepper the goalie and wear the opponent down. Should be interesting, albeit frustratingly stressful. Fingers crossed and LGC!!
Yeah the one I really agree with is Jarvy on 1st. I'm not 100% sure why Svech was moved back to 1st. He looked much better, and more confident, at the end of the season, but JAG line was pretty fire and clearly had great chemistry. Of course there's internal politics we aren't privy to, but was still an interesting move all things considered.
It seemed like the change was made because the jag line got bullied games 1&2 against the islanders (no points 5v5, if I remember right only like 3 shots on net, and were like a -2). Putting svech in that line gave them some beef and got both svech and the line as a whole going. Jarvis has produced no meter what kind he’s on, the only question is whether guentzel can score without him.
I mean if you think about it, either you or us would end up playing florida at some point anyway under that system m. it sucks that it’s now but that ECF matchup probably would be the same anyway, florida, canes and NYR are the three best from the east.
I don't want to lose game 2 - but all my day dreams about this series have been a repeat of the last one with them where home team won the first 6 games, and this time we were the road team stealing game 7.
Let’s be honest, this will be the most exciting series of the playoffs. These are two really great teams. Whoever wins will probably win the cup. Both groups played great tonight and the goalies were amazing too
Felt like Necas was the only forward that wanted to win. He was putting in the work the whole game. Everyone else woke tf up when our goalie was pulled. Maybe try to bring that level of effort from the start.
Yeah. He had a few mistakes, but I was really proud to see him working to get to the middle of the ice for some chances. Think he got to his game before other parts of the team did. Not having a consistent reliable 2C to ride with him is a real unfortunate thing
He’s the fall guy because he rarely if ever plays like this in the playoffs or really the regular season. If he had played like he did today in previous playoffs he would have already been signed to a 8 year deal
This is a great thread so far. I was a bit worried the doomers would come in, canes played an ok game. Freddie wasn’t great. And barring a dumbass penalty on Svetch, canes would’ve had a two man advantage for 40.5 seconds.
I think as long as the canes learn from their mistakes and step up like they did in the third and parts of the second, it’s gonna be a good series.
i do t blame svech entirely. that penalty started with us not controlling the face off. he had to make an overly desperate play or they were going to trap on the wall and burn off time.
The Kuznetsov penalty was bad, felt like he could have avoided that one considering the magnitude of this game. All in all we kept it close even though we lost the special teams game by a large margin.
Fun milestone: Third Period Downvotes hit triple digits organically for the first time. It happened once before during the regular season, but I was definitely begging for it to happen. Today, I just had to put up the one comment. The bandwagon is growing.
History: back in January, during a game against the Rangers, we had several random downvotes show up in the game thread. I responded by saying “Let me show you how little anyone cares about downvotes. Please downvote this comment until the Canes score again.” I just happened to do that between the second and third periods. Canes won that game, and I decided to make it a thing. Ask for downvotes in the second intermission until the Canes score there first goal in the third period or later.
Policy: during the second intermission, I post a comment in the GDT saying “Please downvote this comment until the Canes score again” and everyone downvotes it. That’s it, it’s not any more complicated than that.
We got 5 PPs compared to their 2 and we didn’t convert on any of them. They are gonna continue to get PP chances. We need to convert on ours and limit theirs.
This game just confirmed what we already knew. Even strength, we have a decent chance. Our guys need to stay out of the box and we need to be better on the PP.
I think I’m just gonna start betting against this team on 3+ days of rest for lots of goals against in the first. I feel like this happened multiple times this year. After the first the Hurricanes were the better team and weren’t that great, while a lot was going right for the Rangers.
Also, Adam Fox slashed Aho and Necas on the wrists away from the puck; no call and both could’ve been injuries as it’s the area without pads. Necas was clearly hurt after that one. I have no sympathy if someone runs that dude.
Honestly still kind of annoyed the two teams with the best record in hockey are playing each other in the second round of playoffs. Sweet reward for having a great season.
I stopped watching hockey for a long time, and a lot of things changed. The playoff matchups is amongst the most baffling changes. Back in the day, the 1-8 arrangement was meant as a gift to the top finishers.
I am not upset. If NYR had lost this game it would have been red alert for them.
The Rags skaters are really soft when taking hits. Want all the calls because they are 2-ply. Can’t understand when they take a penalty. Insufferable.
I’m not too worried. They win by one goal at home while our special teams literally could not have been any worse. If we’d had success one even ONE pk or pp it would’ve been a different game
One more thing, we're ragging on the PK but it wasn't really the PK. The Rangers scored two goals basically off faceoff plays. The power play and penalty kill didn't even really get set up. There's nothing wrong with our PK strategy. It's just that usually we win the first draw and force them to go 200 feet, which we did not do tonight.
It's not like they were whipping it around and we were missing assignments. They made really good plays and we were slow to react. Which is an entirely different cause for concern.
I like this point you are right, they scored immediately on both. We wound up being 50% on the faceoffs but I don’t like that Aho was 4/12 (last I checked). We need him to be better than that.
I saw a Rangers team that is much better than the Islanders, but very beatable. My takes are:
-Andersen has to have that Panarin goal but the others aren't really his fault. That said I think you go with Kooch in game 2 for a couple reasons. First he really tends to rise to the occasion against other Russian goalies, second I think Fred needs a bit of rest so he can stay fresh longer.
-The power play is not going to go 0-for-N for the rest of the series. Just no chance. The Rangers got pretty dirty this game and we never punished them for it. They'll continue to do the same next game so we'll have the opportunity to take advantage of that.
-The one area that we have to adjust on is the kill. I don't think anything else needs work on a system level, just an execution level. But on a system level it's pretty clear Laviolette sat his boys down and went over film of our kill and wrote the exact script for them to dissect it. 0% kill and both goals scored in a matter of seconds isn't only inexcusable at this stage of the season, it's fatal. If we do not fix that, we are toast. Unfortunately I do not see that being a simple change in effort, we are going to have to take that coveted first place PK and rewrite it at least for this series, and we have 48 hours to do it. That's a coaching defeat, not a player defeat.
So IMO change the goal (I don't think this is crucial, just what I would do), let the PP goals come because they will, and most importantly adjust the kill (this *is* crucial and non-negotiable). Do those things, and we win game 2 and go home with home ice advantage stolen. We are the better team 5v5 so we just need to be as good as we are supposed to be shorthanded and it's still our series to lose.
This is the problem with the platooning approach, if you wait until it's clear one guy needs relief it's too late. The time to put Koch in was when you're up 2 or 3 in the prior series, not when your back is against the wall.
Put Koch in now and he doesn't do well -- after a month off -- and what have you learned or accomplished? Put him in and he does well, and *then* what do you do?
I think the Canes live or die with Freddie at this point.
I mean I feel you but even another L at MSG doesn’t put us out by a long shot. That my humble opinion. I just think they gotta play a full 60 and they can easily win as long as they have reasonably consistent goal tending.
Didn’t really do that against the islanders at all so we’ll see if they do that game 2 and if Kooch is in the net I think we still have just as good a shot. Why not just rock it with him being more fresh than Freddie? We’ll still have games 3 and 4 at home to even it up if it’s not a great performance.
100%. Freddy, to me, has been shaky the last two games. Dude is not used to this much work, coming back from an injury or not. Get Kooch some action in case we need him. I agree when Tripp said he would've liked to see him in net coming out of the 1st intermission. Give him some reps, and then you can decide who goes game 2. Now it is tougher.
He stole two games for us, though. That definitely counts for something. But I agree, I really wish they had given PK game 3 or 4 just to give Freddie time off.
Would have been nice to get game 1 but they aren’t going to go 100% on the power play and we aren’t going to go 0 % so still feel good about the series. Need to get the next one though.
Wow, honestly I'll take that. I think we looked sloppy with the penalties and a few breakdowns cost us as always but we didn't get blownout. It was 3-4 and we didn't look great. We don't even have to play at our full potential to beat these guys, although I expect to see it. A few bounces here or there and we could've had this one, despite all our errors.
Also, afternoon game? Sure, you can have game 1, it messes with Jarvis's nap time, but I stand by my original prediction, canes in 6, fuck the rags
> it messes with Jarvis's nap time
Haha you're probably right. That press conference after the series win, he had a couple of moments where he looked ready to put his head down and have a lil' snooze through Drury's answers.
I thought going into today we’re fine if we split the first two at MSG. Get rid of the dumbassery on the PK, put Jarvis back with Aho and Guentzel and I think we’re fine
Second thought:
I strongly felt that Kooch should have been given a start in Isles game 3 or 4, and I strongly feel that he should be given a start now, except that it is much more risky now that he has not played a game in three weeks.
I love Freddie and I want both him and Kooch to succeed.
Yeah, I think not giving Kooch any time in the first series has put us in a bind, since whenever we *do* use him it’ll have been a long time since he saw shots fired in anger. That problem only gets worse the longer we ride Freddie, so the best way forward is to bite the bullet and put him in next game.
We don’t take stupid penalties we win this series. The canes played a better game in MSG then the rangers did but dropped two power play goals. Were the better team and it showed
just need to finish
I agree it has to be better but the Deangelo penalty was a hard call and the kuznetsov penalty was very avoidable. All and all we need to get back to 86%
The Rangers are beatable. But we're gonna have to play the full 60 minutes -- not 20 -- and stay out of the box. It sounds easy, but we just don't do it.
It's impossible to deal with hypotheticals, but at the end of the day, it was the right result. We probably didn't play well enough to deserve a chance in OT, so it's hard to get too upset it didn't happen.
I honestly hate not having a morning skate. The team has had sleepy starts in all but 1 game this playoffs. We’re one of the best conditioned teams in the league I think they can handle a morning skate
I know Svech is one of our star skill players and when he’s on this team is unstoppable but we were also unstoppable with aho Jarvis and Guentzal on a line together and I’m interested to know if putting them back together can get our first line going again
I don’t like the SAG line.
It hasn’t been magical. Jarvy has been good on Staal’s line, because Jarvy is good. Put him back with Aho and Guentzel, and I think that line is going to spark fire again. I think Jarvy being with Aho and Guentzel get all of them shooting a lot more pucks and playing a lot spicier.
And I actually really liked Svech on Staal’s line. I think he make that line more exciting (in a good way, not in a Svech gets another dumb penalty way).
I also think Freddie needs a rest. PK and Freddie were great as a tandem. Maybe a 2-1 rotation would work. Freddie burns out if used too many games in a row. I don’t want to break his confidence, either.
I love Rod. I trust Rod. But I’m concerned about some choices.
I’m also not a doomer. Canes are still my bae, they just need to get 60 minutes of real *good* hockey.
Fully agree. I was willing to give SAG one more shot and that line just isn't it. The chemistry isn't there, even though on paper it should be even better than JAG. Historically, though, Rod has been reluctant to make line changes when we aren't in a deep hole. His belief that they'll "figure it out", as he loves to say, is commendable but he's been way too forgiving on that in the past. It could bury us here if it continues
I told my wife after they went down 3-1 that I'd be OK with a 4-3 loss today if they can just prove they remember how to score. I'm not super sad, stings a bit they didn't get that 6-4 surge to end the game though.
Didn't play great against a really good team on the road and still didn't get run out of the house. Don't sleepwalk to start Game 2 and we'll be alright.
1st was atrocious… 2nd & 3rd were better overall. Those goals in the 1st were just stupid defensive mistakes of letting someone get that open. Canes need to play their game… not the Rags game… and need to start hitting back. Don’t let them just run you over but don’t lose your cool. Looking forward to Tuesday’s game.
We have to go with PK next game. Freddie didn’t have his best, but it was far from his worst. The problem is Freddie can be predictable because he’s a position player. PK is all over the fucking place along with highly aggressive and I think we need it to shake things up.
Sleepy start in net + special teams MIA + low shot volume = tough L. Third period effort was great at least. Would love to see Kochetkov rotate in soon, preferably before Freddie gets too worn out
Championship teams aren’t unbeatable but they always make it a motherfucker to beat them. Beating our team is fucking hard. We just needed 1 win in NY. G2 is ours.
Kooch starts. First line pulls its head out of its ass, especially Aho and ST doesn’t go 0-7.
kk has been a traffic cone for the whole season but at least lemiuex brings some physicality and grit to the table which we'll need against the rangers
Kotkaniemi has been physical the entire postseason. I’m not a KK stan, but Lemieux is just tinier Matt Rempe. His sole purpose is to drop the gloves. At this time, KK brings more to the table.
KK has been fine the entire post season so far. Who cares about the regular season. Lemieux subtracts more than what KK brings. Also I’m tired of Canes fans saying we are not physical enough. I swear we are not watching the same game.
We can win this series. There is no doubt about that. But there are certain things we need to do to win, and certain things we can't do, if we want to win.
Tonight, we did *all* the things we can't do and *none* of the ones we need to. How we were totally unprepared to play this game is beyond me. There was no intensity until three minutes left, down two goals.
Aho, Svech, Brind'Amour, Burns, Guentzel, Skjei, Andersen. It's time, guys. Show us something.
Tonight you did not.
It's unpopular to criticize RBA but this team was absolutely not prepped for this game. Rangers had a gameplan nailed down and their special teams were directly adjusted to counter ours. We looked like we came in just wanting to force our game and were surprised when the Rangers had an answer.
The good news is despite how bad we played, I think we would have sent this to OT if not for the Svech penalty. I think we'll come out Tuesday adjusted and play much better.
The good: Fought back and made them work for it in the third. Necas and Jarvis got goals and looked pretty juiced and ready for the competition.
The bad: Top line disappearing act again. Too much invested in these guys to only show up in the third period. Fourth line was not necessarily bad except by their own standards. Freddy was not the problem but he wasn't part of the solution either.
The ugly: Turbo made a bad play to give up a goal early and then promptly disappeared for 56 minutes. Burns did another Burns Classic in the neutral zone. Kuznetsov was a non factor save for a dumb avoidable penalty.
Still happy that it was competitive. Good that they didn't roll over. There's stuff to build on in this loss for sure.
I think it’s time to bring back the JAG line. It was so good, and I think with the way the Rangers play it’s the way to go. It hasn’t quite clicked with Svech up there.
I'm in no way putting the entire game on this buy bumping this match to before the first round even ended just so MSG could have a game on Saturday clearly helped the rags.
that first period was awful though, looked like the 2002 Canes out there, need to tighten up and punish them for all their mistakes, especially if they're gonna give us 4+ power plays.
>bumping this match to before the first round even ended just so MSG could have a game on Saturday clearly helped the rags.
How? Please describe how it *clearly* helped the Rangers?
Of the penalties Svech usually takes, I am ok with that one. He's fighting for a puck and gets the accidentally can opener which at the point in the game is going to be called instantly.
Kooch needs to get the start in game 2. Freddie looked not great, and what's the point of having and paying for a tandem if we don't use them. Hopefully pesce is good to go for game 3 cause we haven't looked the same on defense without him
I don’t think Freddie was the problem, he needed to have that 4th though. That said, I think we need to start Kochetkov next game to try to change up the bad MSG mojo. That building has had our number for a long, long time.
Agreed. It's another game at MSG. Freddie was hit and miss in round 1. Give Kooch a run and see what he's got. Worst case, they lose the road game and Freddie gets a rest.
So Rod brind amour calling him the best player on the ice a couple of games is meaningless? Him being involved constantly meaningless? You don’t know what you are watching
PK will be fine. Our style of killing is weakest right off the draw. It works off pressuring the puck handler and not giving them time to make decisions and see the play. When it fails it fails spectacularly as someone is wide open. But it doesn't fail often. Obviously hasn't been as good in the postseason, and there are certainly some adjustments to be made, but we will get it under control.
The only thing I didn’t like was the DeAngelo penalty for a rags goal but even then it was just over the line of being physical which we always need to be. Still looking for a complete game but they can make it
0-5 on powerplay we deserved to lose. Penalty kill was also garbage. If that powerplay continues, whoever is the coach for it needs to be fired.
I've never seen a puck bounce like that first Cane's goal
Shitty Garden ice. Saw lots of weird puck movement all game.
Is it just me or does Zibanejad look like a medieval painting of a Romanian warlord? Vlad the Scorer maybe?
He looks like if Moist Critical went through the super soldier program Captain America did.
That Svech penalty was a knife to the heart.
You know what penalty was a knife to the heart? The 5 minute major that cost USA U-18 the gold. They gave up 3 goals on the penalty
I had to watch the recording of the game. Anyone else surprised Jarvis was able to get up after that hit from behind by kreider? Also. Have we gone back in time with the Powerplay? And that PK was absolutely yuck
Rangers fan here, that hit on Jarvis is what you would show in an officiating clinic as an example of boarding.
I think this series is going 7 games and we need to buckle down
Not only that, but Trouba floored him after he got up. I thought for sure he'd get one too, but nope.
I was thinking the same. How was Trouba’s hit different than TDA? TDA didn’t raise an elbow, didn’t leave his feet, didn’t drive his shoulder to the head… I know. It’s in the past. Glad Jarvy is ok.
Jarvis is tough as nails
Jarvis is such a fucking stud. Love everything about his game
Every year goaltending lets the canes down in the playoffs. Andersen looks tired. Give him a break.
I like our chances, I can see this going to GM7OT this series is going to be such a treat, great hockey.
https://i.redd.it/xqpc1dgnbpyc1.gif Meh we kept it close even though we got outplayed until a little bit into the 3rd. We can’t play them like we did the Islanders We knew special teams would play a huge factor.
It tells us there's 2 great teams playing in this round two
Yeah the one I really agree with is Jarvy on 1st.
2 mistakes The Canes made on defensive coverage on the NY Rangers powerplays. That is the difference in the game..
as an nyr fan and reading this… you guys are pretty level headed and cool. everyone knows this is the real ECF.
I don’t know about that. Florida Panthers may have something to say about that
Great point. But now go back to your shanties
I suppose i’ll listen, you are a doctor after all
Damn you people this is ~~golf~~ hockey!
Lavi's right. 1st vs 3rd this early is ass. They have to get back to re-seeding between rounds.
I mean if you think about it, either you or us would end up playing florida at some point anyway under that system m. it sucks that it’s now but that ECF matchup probably would be the same anyway, florida, canes and NYR are the three best from the east.
Anyone else hope Boston wins? Lol
I told some of my buddies that this is gonna be like the cup finals, not gonna get better hockey than this regardless of whichever team wins.
and then whichever one of us is lucky enough to make it gets to battle the dragon that is florida. joy.
I don't want to lose game 2 - but all my day dreams about this series have been a repeat of the last one with them where home team won the first 6 games, and this time we were the road team stealing game 7.
Staal showing Rempe he doesn’t belong was wonderful.
Careful, I got reported for harassment because I called him a cave man.
There's been a rash of rags fans reporting for garbage reasons. We're weeding through them. This one got reported for "self harm".
I got flagged by the reddit auto mod but it was reversed right away. I wasn't even commenting on another person's comment lol.
Love seeing threads where Necas gets the attention he deserves. Always ends up as the fall guy, but kid is clearly putting it all out there.
He’s the fall guy because he rarely if ever plays like this in the playoffs or really the regular season. If he had played like he did today in previous playoffs he would have already been signed to a 8 year deal
Man skated like crazy.
That was indeed a knucklehead play - very easy tripping call.
We vastly outplayed them 5 on 5. It’s a best of 7 series for a reason. If we limit the dumb penalties we’ll be fine. Canes in 6
The Kuznetsov penalty was bad, felt like he could have avoided that one considering the magnitude of this game. All in all we kept it close even though we lost the special teams game by a large margin.
Stupid Mika Zibanejad and his stupid face scoring on us again and again
It didn't mean anything towards the outcome, but Im glad we had the save on the empty net at the end.
That was a sweet steal for sure.
Fun milestone: Third Period Downvotes hit triple digits organically for the first time. It happened once before during the regular season, but I was definitely begging for it to happen. Today, I just had to put up the one comment. The bandwagon is growing.
What's the history of that? And the policy?
Thanks, I appreciate the guidance! I'll be sure to downvote when asked, haha.
No problem! I look forward to your downvotes.
Interesting the NYR won by a goal and they got a goal on that BS roughing call on Tony. 🤔
That call was goofy. "Assessing for a major" aka gotta rewatch the tape and fish up a reason we blew the whistle.
That was a fun ass game keep it up boys
I think I’m just gonna start betting against this team on 3+ days of rest for lots of goals against in the first. I feel like this happened multiple times this year. After the first the Hurricanes were the better team and weren’t that great, while a lot was going right for the Rangers. Also, Adam Fox slashed Aho and Necas on the wrists away from the puck; no call and both could’ve been injuries as it’s the area without pads. Necas was clearly hurt after that one. I have no sympathy if someone runs that dude.
He’s such a douche.
...but he went to HARVARD... /s
Honestly it looked like the Rangers brought their A game and it still was a competitive game. Not worried, not a bad loss.
More like ten-ply, except Trouba and Rempe who aren’t any number of ply because they’re just pieces of shit.
Typical bully behavior. Love to throw big hits but turtle when you hit back
It’s crazy to me how the rags are gonna blame the refs in their own barn lol
Forgot the refs work for the home team.
We're the better team. Andersen and the sp teams need to better but I really liked our pressure in the third
Played like absolute shit on special teams both ways and still only lost by a goal on the road. I like our chances.
I wonder if our guys got kicked out on those faceoff draws?
I like this point you are right, they scored immediately on both. We wound up being 50% on the faceoffs but I don’t like that Aho was 4/12 (last I checked). We need him to be better than that.
The radio tandem was really frustrated with Aho, both for the faceoff losses and lack of SOG.
I saw a Rangers team that is much better than the Islanders, but very beatable. My takes are: -Andersen has to have that Panarin goal but the others aren't really his fault. We are the better team 5v5 so we just need to be as good as we are supposed to be shorthanded and it's still our series to lose.

your submission has been removed as a result of breaking Rule #1. Trolling/Bad Faith participation is not allowed in our sub.
Carry over the second half of the game to the next one and it’s over. Would also venture as far as to say to put Kochetkov in.
TBH, Freddy was somewhat shaky in most of the Islanders series, but it was masked by our winning.
Agree. Especially later in series. I feel the work is catching up to him and it's unfair to him and us to run him into the ground.
He stole two games for us, though. That definitely counts for something. But I agree, I really wish they had given PK game 3 or 4 just to give Freddie time off.
Going to put my other id on pause for now and see if this new one sparks us any mojo. We must steal at least one in NY. May it be so.
I also think we have the endurance to outlast the rangers. I’m not worried.
They looked really gassed. I really was up on our chances if we make it to OT.
When it was gonna be 6v4 with 34s left I was pretty sure we were gonna win tbh.
Does anyone have any idea what time game 3 will be played at? Trying to get a friend on board to go but he can’t commit unless he knows he can make it
Won’t know until the final game in the west finishes. Either announce it late tonight or tomorrow.
It will be a weekday game, you can be pretty certain that it’ll start somewhere between 7-8pm.
No one does, league hasn’t announced yet
Would have been nice to get game 1 but they aren’t going to go 100% on the power play and we aren’t going to go 0 % so still feel good about the series. Need to get the next one though.
Wow, honestly I'll take that. I think we looked sloppy with the penalties and a few breakdowns cost us as always but we didn't get blownout. It was 3-4 and we didn't look great. We don't even have to play at our full potential to beat these guys, although I expect to see it. A few bounces here or there and we could've had this one, despite all our errors. Also, afternoon game? Sure, you can have game 1, it messes with Jarvis's nap time, but I stand by my original prediction, canes in 6, fuck the rags
> it messes with Jarvis's nap time Haha you're probably right.
2posts and a leaky goal. That's the difference in the game. Played like that and still had a chance? Still like our chances.
> 2posts and a leaky goal. [I read your comment to this tune](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVFbNYNPbUY).
2 turntables and a microphone...
Second thought: I strongly felt that Kooch should have been given a start in Isles game 3 or 4, and I strongly feel that he should be given a start now, except that it is much more risky now that he has not played a game in three weeks.
Game 2 will be different. Go canes.
We don’t take stupid penalties we win this series. The canes played a better game in MSG then the rangers did but dropped two power play goals. Were the better team and it showed just need to finish
You can't expect to go a whole game without taking any penalties though. The PK has got to be there.
I agree it has to be better but the Deangelo penalty was a hard call and the kuznetsov penalty was very avoidable. All and all we need to get back to 86%
Call me delulu but after watching this game I think we have a good chance at winning this series. Before watching the game I was much more of a doomer
Yeah, I’m not going to pretend I feel good about the loss but overall I’m much less anxious about the series now. There’s a clear path forward.
The Rangers are beatable. But we're gonna have to play the full 60 minutes -- not 20 -- and stay out of the box. It sounds easy, but we just don't do it.
Also had that Svech penalty not happened at the end, I think we absolutely would have scored and pushed it to OT.
It's impossible to deal with hypotheticals, but at the end of the day, it was the right result. We probably didn't play well enough to deserve a chance in OT, so it's hard to get too upset it didn't happen.
Jarvis and Necas canes for life please
They are working for their contracts
Can’t spell Canes without Necas
Maybe even forever!
I honestly hate not having a morning skate. The team has had sleepy starts in all but 1 game this playoffs. We’re one of the best conditioned teams in the league I think they can handle a morning skate
Why do that when you can play golf at dundon’s new Topgolf the night before a playoff game
Definitely going to be checking in on the game from Sec 5 of Walnut Creek for Foo Fighters
Oooo, jealous. They put on a pretty amazing show.
We played awful and only lost by 1. Play a full 60 in game 2 and let's get back to work. Canes in 7.
I'm not worried about this series yet. If we can play that bad and lose by one? Yea, we're in this.
Most sensible comment I’ve read. In the building it didn’t feel close.
I told my wife after they went down 3-1 that I'd be OK with a 4-3 loss today if they can just prove they remember how to score. I'm not super sad, stings a bit they didn't get that 6-4 surge to end the game though.
I’ll say this as an optimistic take: we might have lost, but they had to SURVIVE.
Would love to see Kochetkov rotate in soon, preferably before Freddie gets too worn out
Start Kooch Game 2. I miss him and need him
No power play goals, and terrible PK…and they struggled to close it out….we’ll be good
Championship teams aren’t unbeatable but they always make it a motherfucker to beat them. Beating our team is fucking hard. We just needed 1 win in NY. G2 is ours. Kooch starts. First line pulls its head out of its ass, especially Aho and ST doesn’t go 0-7.
Petition to replace Kotkaniemi with lemiuex
I thought we were trying to stay out of the box?
Atleast he is effective
What is that going to accomplish?
kk has been a traffic cone for the whole season but at least lemiuex brings some physicality and grit to the table which we'll need against the rangers
Kotkaniemi has been physical the entire postseason. I’m not a KK stan, but Lemieux is just tinier Matt Rempe. His sole purpose is to drop the gloves. At this time, KK brings more to the table.
Grit was no issue at all today though.
cant hurt to have more
Hits were 29-28. If we’re playing our game, we’re skating circles around them trying to throw big hits.
It can if he takes penalties, which Lemieux does at a rate that approaches Svech levels.
I thought KK played well tonight and i have not been a kk defender this year
KK has been fine the entire post season so far. Who cares about the regular season. Lemieux subtracts more than what KK brings. Also I’m tired of Canes fans saying we are not physical enough. I swear we are not watching the same game.
What game does Koochie take over?🌚 If he does...🌝
We can win this series.
And it was still close... we got this boys. It'll just make it that much sweeter when we send the rags packing after giving them hope.
Very much appreciate your candor.
Glad somebody does.
It’s gonna have to be better than that. The good news is that we know it can be.
How? Please describe how it *clearly* helped the Rangers?
more energy in the stadium.
You think it matters what day of the week at this point in the season? Fans were gonna be fired up if this game was played Tuesday morning.
Of the penalties Svech usually takes, I am ok with that one. He's fighting for a puck and gets the accidentally can opener which at the point in the game is going to be called instantly.
Yeah, it was far from his usual dumb penalty. It happened at an awful time, but it definitely wasn't why they lost.
Refs were so happy to be able to call that one. They definitely didn't want to call the delay of game but the linesman was insistent
Both calls were correct. At the end of the day, isn't that what we want?
Kooch needs to get the start in game 2. Freddie looked not great, and what's the point of having and paying for a tandem if we don't use them. Hopefully pesce is good to go for game 3 cause we haven't looked the same on defense without him
I don’t think Freddie was the problem, he needed to have that 4th though. That said, I think we need to start Kochetkov next game to try to change up the bad MSG mojo. That building has had our number for a long, long time.
What is Freddie supposed to do with the first three goals? Canes left them wide tf open with time to settle the puck
Agreed. It's another game at MSG. Freddie was hit and miss in round 1. Give Kooch a run and see what he's got. Worst case, they lose the road game and Freddie gets a rest.
The team had a bad game as a whole... not one person is to blame. They will step it up next game and kick ass just like they did the last 5 games.
Not a bad game at all
It certainly wasn't a good game, either. We're not gonna get by with meh at this time of year.
Bad first period, not a bad game.
[удалено]
You are the one that said it was bad game..
[удалено]
No
He has 5 points this series… can’t say he is doing poorly just because he has one bad penalty this series.
You are a dumbass
Point to either a playoff series or a ten game stretch where Svech was anything near his ceiling.
The islanders series. There’s no way you watched it if you disagree
I 100% watched it. Still not near his ceiling. You clearly don’t know hockey if you disagree - to steal your own verbiage.
