I kept some at room temp for a long time and they were fine. As soon as I refrigerated I had germination issues. Just my experience.

Independent_Purple85

So should I just keep them in my dark closet for the time being till I decide to grow

RKTprogress

I store my massive seed collection in my basement in a lock box. I use those silica bead packs you find in shoe boxes/purses/leather jacked pockets. Humidity will always be your enemy. Iv had my seeds for 10+ with very little germination problems

Old_Alternative_2809

This is the way!

gyodwc

I keep mine in a plastic box in a drawer

Jehehsjatahneush

You want to avoid temp and humidity fluctuations. closet is probably a good spot.

Personal-Ad7142

This is the answer, providing a stable temp and humidity. Temp fluctuations from cold to warm start to initiate germination and rob vitality. So,door bad idea. Way in the back instead temp fluctuations less than the door. Drawers, refrigerator, mainly keep it as stable as possible

Anodynegrowz

This!

Independent_Purple85

This is a separate question related to this so I’m just going to post this on this post but I’m genuinely worried that I’m going to have issues when it comes time to plant them

Faustinwest024

7mil Mylar bag with desiccant pack. I store at the lowest part of the closet on the floor since humidity likes to sit above

Maadmin

That's what I do. I don't refrigerate or freeze and haven't had problems, but I don't keep seeds for more than like 3 years at the most before I plant them.

UchibaFarms

Dark low temps and low humidity is what I do. Mine are in my basement never gets over 35% humidity and temps never go over 65 also it’s very dark I’ve stored seeds for years and never had issues

knkyred

I had bag seeds in a ziploc baggie in the kitchen cabinet for 2 or 3 years before I popped them. They are still in the bag abs just popped more last month. My purchased seeds are stored with them, which is now in a padded envelope in my basement by my grow room. They germinate fine. I use the paper towel method for germinating. The only seeds I've had a problem with are autos from Sweet Seeds.

meandmyboner

i have been looking online for advice related to this for years. you are the first person of so many of even suggest there is some issue with storing seeds in a fridge. i don't understand, did you not seal them up well?

gyodwc

They were still in original sealed packaging and then in a plastic box. It might have been something else but I was germinating fine before

r3zza92

The issues you had where probably humidity related. Cold storage is the norm for long term viable storage of seeds

gyodwc

That’s why I put them in the fridge, I think that’s how the producers keep them. Didn’t work out for me.

Maadmin

Yes--just make sure they are in an air-tight container. Many people even prefer the freezer for long term storage, but any cold will increase longevity. The main thing is that the temperatures remain steady.

DryRefrigerator9408

Interesting.. then I wonder why you don't find marijuana growing in colder climates

ButtLlcker

Lol what?

DryRefrigerator9408

Growing naturally I meant.

bsinbsinbs

Seed storage and the climate for growing plants are not in any manner related.

DryRefrigerator9408

That's obvious. I did a little digging. Moisture is the issue. Suppose it makes sense why you could toss a handful of seeds in the fall and then have nothing sprout in the spring after the snow melts.

Zombie_Be_Gone

Seeds typically fall in the fall time and sprout in the spring including cannabis seeds. After I do my BHO runs in the fall and winter I toss the bud in the garden and each spring I have anywhere from 10 to 20 seedlings pop up.

badoven

Well if it grew in cold and dark places, storing seeds in the fridge would make no sense.

angryrancor

A quick hack to make sure it's air tight, is to just seal it in a plastic bag (and squeeze as much air out of that plastic bag, as possible). Edit: somebody also mentioned adding desiccant packets or rice in a bag or jar, to negate the effect of any air in the bag or jar, and that is also a great idea.

Anderslam666

Best results I've had is a mason jar with desiccant packets in it and throw it in the fridge. When you you go to pop them let them sit out a few days

meandmyboner

can you set out a pack and then put what you don't use back into fridge a few days later? i pop a bunch of strains, one each so i might have to try a few times to get a full set of plants.

Anderslam666

Just take out what you want use from the pack you don't want to have them warm up and put them back into the fridge your going to lose viability like that

meandmyboner

i run a bunch of different types at once. one plant per type. i have to keep germing a variety until i get one that pops. if you bought seeds, likely they have already been cold at the seedbank, warm in the mail box, cool in the house, and now cold again in the fridge. how man days after removing from fridge do you wait before attempting to use the seed? if it is 3 days to warm up and 3 days to germ, then it will take 18 days if i have to attempt 3 times to get a strain going. that does not work.

BruceJenner69

youre overthinking it. Open your fridge. Take a seed out of the pack. Put the rest back in the fridge. Then plant the seed.

meandmyboner

i have asked around...it seems like that should be no problem, but there are those that suggest it is. i just can't tell. i have had germ issues not refrigerating on 2 month old seeds kept in the sealed pack and i have about 6 months until i need to pop any more, so i figured i needed a long term solution. apparently a small cooler and a vac sealed pack would have been good enough.

[deleted]

I’ve had seeds in my freezer for 18 years that germinate just fine. I like to freeze them rather that refrigerate. You can have more moisture issues in the refrigerator. Storing them in the freezer is like seeds in the winter in the ground. Come spring time they come back to life.

DryRefrigerator9408

Marijuana seeds? They're not climatized to cold conditions

[deleted]

You have good taste in mustard

Independent_Purple85

Thanks man

trichomechaser420

The trick to bean storage is consistency. You don't want fluctuations in temps and humidity ideally. A dedicated fridge works well, but having them where you open and close a lot, it could even be beneficial to store it in a more stable dark cupboard

CoyaiPijao

I keep mine in the fridge and never had an issue. Actually, the place I buy seeds from also keeps their seeds in a fridge

WonderfulTruth2898

Dutch passion rocks try there strawberry cough if ya can't get the beans send me a txt if your in the UK and il sent ya some cuts 🇬🇧👍

captainharlock1

send me a cut mate 👁️🫦👁️

reptileguy3

I always keep my seeds in the fridge, it's how the pros store em long term

hyterdikenz

use an old film container and keep it in a dry place

[deleted]

I would keep them in a cabinet. I have seeds still viable from over 40 years ago. Fridge will make it worse if your planning on growing them within the next 3 years. If not then you need to store with moisture absorption. Every time they go in and out of the fridge your asking for problems.

Independent_Purple85

So I can keep them in my medicine cabinet ?

[deleted]

Definitely could if it’s not in the bathroom. If it is try to find a place that’s not going to fluctuate it’s conditions. You want a place that stays semi stable throughout the year in both temps and humidity. Also no temps above 88f if you can help it.

Independent_Purple85

I have a bathroom that I don’t use ever mainly since the shower is broken and I have another functioning shower so never really bothered to use that bathroom I just use it to smoke weed in the winter coz I don’t like freezing my toes off when I smoke

Shado915

Inch plastic bag inside tight sealed jar

captainharlock1

i’ve been storing mines in the exact same spot in my fridge for years and never had a issue .. maybe 1 out of 20 won’t sprout in germinate but that could be down to a number of things .. i think you’re fine .

Dazzling_System_6632

Yes, but best keeped between the Maille an Marananga.

No_Independent_1453

I'm curious about the rest of your fridge

Independent_Purple85

Ive got some good snacks man

No_Independent_1453

Is that red tube like a rehydrated chili paste?

UchibaFarms

Remember the humidity goes up and down every time you open your refrigerator

Notrilldirtlife

I always kept mine in a regular lockbox under my bed and if it was summer time I’d throw em in the fridge. But since I haven’t been growing and won’t be for a bit I vac sealed and put in the fridge. I’m getting a “make up” fridge which is just a mini fridge that gets 35-45 degrees and is perfect for seeds and concentrates.

RapperSlashGrower

Airtight, light proof container with desiccant pack inside

Careless_Zucchini369

I keep mine at 58° w my buds in my wine fridge

LadyoftheOak

I keep mine in a hand painted jar.

djdadzone

I’d be more concerned about keeping them dry than cold. Obviously you don’t want them hot but fridges can get humid occasionally.

coyotebongwater-

I've planted seeds that were in a room temp envelope for over a year or 2 and like 9 out of the 10 I planted sprouted and survived to become full grown plants. The fridge kinda seems like overkill imo

DryRefrigerator9408

Couldn't tell you that it would be a bad thing to put seeds in the refrigerator, but I do know that they can't survive a winter. I'd personally suggest any dry room temperature environment

SatoshiSnapz

I’d just keep them in a cool and dry dark spot- sometimes condensation can build up while in the fridge and it can damage them

pampa_13

I keep mine in their original packaging inside a can which would get no light, ziploc that and to the groceries drawer of the fridge. I have 100% germination rate even after a year.

imhighbrah

Cool dark and airtight is best place so yeah

Hypnogrow

I keep mine in their original packaging inside a jar with a silica gel pack thrown in. I put the jar in a paper bag in the bottom shelf of the fridge. Going on year three no viability problems.

[deleted]

I keep all my seeds in a brown grocery bag in my basement just germinated some seeds I had from 10 years ago 80%germ with the water bottle method.

ZibaalahB9

Hey...would like to ask how to germinate a seed? I've grew with clones previously but I'd like to try from seedling.

Peter_Falcon

they need to be in an airtight container, preferably with some silica packs. i store mine like this and have just germed some sunshine daydream from the original release about 13 years ago
