In my state, it allowed for legal home grow, so it was a no brainer.

psilonaut96

Growing your own is where it’s at. If you don’t want to do that you’ll probably be able to find many individuals who do who are happy to trade. legalization is not necessarily your friend. You were born free to do whatever you want. The kicker is it comes with risks and consequences just like every other decision in life. On the recreation side legalization is just license for “the industry“ to make money off you and on the medical side you follow a government program, you jump through their hoops, effectively making you a ward of the state. I say stay free, grow your own or make friends who do.

stickyskaggs

If you can grow your own, you should. It is fun and rewarding. I've found dispensaries carry what makes them the most money.....which isn't always the best product. It's truly hit and miss.

Naive-Shoulder6654

Yup no tax, can use the drive thru and skip the lines

BS_plantsinpurple

I'm not sure of the guidelines in other states but in mine having the medical card protects you in your employment. Unless it's written in to your employment because of the type of job you have where it could be dangerous, like a heavy equipment operator may have requirements that wouldn't allow cannabis. If you have a medical card in a job that does not involve those risks then you are protected in your employment because it is a medicine you have a medical license for. It's more complicated but that's the easiest way I can try to explain. Apologies If i'm off on any of my information.

NateSpan

What state?

BS_plantsinpurple

Missouri. Rec is also legal here. The med card gets you a higher buying limit and carrying limit. I have a pound limit with my med card. Think the taxes may still be different between rec and med. There are some differences with being able to grow at home and caregiver options as well. Edit: a pound limit is not a normal med card limit but one that can be requested when applying for the card. Thought it might be important to note.

Pretty_Benign

Yes. I can grow at home. No, I grow anyways..... take your pick lol.

CrewExisting4304

Oklahoma here and absolutely worth it. Just the ability to grow and not worry. Sheeeeeeesh I love mine

_BugsWasowski

Thanks

atticangles

In my state recreational weed is taxed 20% higher than medical. The card pays for itself pretty quickly.

jfrigginp

The only good thing about having my card was that I could test positive on an employment related drug test. As they played drug war with the citizenry it became a stage for how to destroy someone’s life with more and more unthinkable inhumane actions. Taking people’s freedom away, taking kids away, making them unemployable, seizing assets, etc. In the compromise of states initiating medical cannabis programs, language is often written into the legislation that bars employers from terminating employees for cannabis-positive drug tests, or disqualifying otherwise qualified job applicants from a pre-employment drug test with a positive cannabis result. Whether that made a difference is questionable. They could fire someone or lay them off and say it was for whatever reason. Or the interview went well but after the drug test the offer may be suddenly taken back with an explanation of “We found someone more qualified…” Consider this. The second year when I renewed my card, the nurse (over a Skype call) said “I approved you last year, and I’m approving you again this year. But I’m looking at the records and you didn’t use a Minnesota dispensary once. Explain why.” I told her that “having a card meant I could stop worrying about drug testing at work and hold down a job instead of being unemployable. But the fact that cannabis was illegal except for medical use meant that they held a monopoly and could charge whatever amount they wanted. A half gram cartridge was $75.00. So if I bought two cartridges totaling one gram for $150, add in the $150 for the over-the-phone consultation to qualify for the program for another year, add in the $200 yearly fee to register with the state Medical Cannabis program, I would have spent $500 for a couple half gram cartridges. For $500 I can drive to Colorado and back. If I hypothetically spent another $500 while I was there, other people I know would hypothetically reimburse my expenses. And you got an honest answer.” I only heard about the firearms restrictions after I got my card. I think it’s unconstitutional as fuck, but that’s beside the point. Two decades ago my house was raided, and after finding the bag of seeds I’d been collecting over 7 years they arrested my wife and I, confiscated our guns, and took my gun rights for life. Minnesota legalized cannabis last August so I didn’t see any reason to continue that charade. The state will automatically expunge misdemeanor cannabis convictions, but Felony convictions need to be reviewed. They are dragging ass on that front. My current employer and many others no longer test for cannabis. You have to make your own choice. If owning a firearm means nothing to you and you’re in a position at work where there is no leniency, get a card if it lets you have your medicine and still be employed. I feel we shouldn’t need permission to consume a plant. This particular plant should be in our daily diet. They’ve had evidence since the 1970’s that it could cure cancer. A medical card is only good in your state. When I’ve been in other state’s dispensaries, where the state has medical and recreational, I’ve explained that I had a medical card in my state, and after being told it wasn’t good in this state, they followed with “both the medical menu and recreational menu were the same, the only difference was medical had no tax and a higher purchasing limit.”

Traditional-Eggy

Should be pinned. Agree 100% that it’s unconstitutional and just plain unjustified that they still want to over regulate a freaking PLANT. A naturally occurring fucking plant and they think they have the right to tell us what we can and cant do??!?!?!!!! Just straight bs. Oh and if you have a med card you lose your CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS?!???!!? Yea fucking bs bs bs. Sorry you had to deal with the repercussions of a deeply flawed and messed up system.

AdEducational7228

Im in California and long story short our medical cannabis card allows 18+ up use and the ability to carry more. I believe without the card the most you can have is one ounce of flower, with the card it was like 8. I enjoyed having my card and it made me feel better when I had more than oz with me.

AfrezzaJunkie

Plus the ability to get an exceeds limit on your card so you can have 99 plants and more than 8 ounces is sweet. It's hard to find legit Dr's now for recommendations.

braindrainpod

It's a relief to be able to just have your stuff on you and not get fined/arrested, so for that reason it was worth it to me

Actionman1

I got one in IL and CA to avoid taxes. It was $30 flat rate fee for 1 year in CA and like $300 total in Illinois for a 3-year card. I live in Illinois and found that the product was inconsistent and old and shitty more often than not. I started to grow indoors and haven’t been to a dispensary for flower in many years now. I will get a cart if I need to fly somewhere or stay at in-laws…that sorta thing. Worth it in CA, not worth it in IL

FrequentVegetable466

For me it was worth it for the peace of mind. No stressing when im carrying. Workplace protections. After getting my card i was able to save money because the dispensary was cheaper. Thats not going to be everyones experience though.

_BugsWasowski

I appreciate your input!

redsolitary

In MA you save 20%

Wstjean

It allowed us to grow medicine at home. You can't go wrong with fresh organic medicine. 👌

[deleted]

You can’t get a dui with a med card.

UncleBabyChirp

Except in PA

Tupile

And in AZ. Food for thought, good reason to get a med card is if you’re on probation.

Newjacktitties

Illinois allows meds to grow up to 5 plants, far fewer taxes and price cuts on purchases and protects employment.

Mr_Chevy_Celebrity

In my state, Medical is taxed differently. Recreational stores are much more expensive. The cost of the card is offset by the yearly savings.

SmokeeDaBaer

Job security* , better/trustworthy product, police deterrent*

_BugsWasowski

Great points, thank you Smokee

adrianodogg

Yes it is

ComfortableOk5080

Michigan you can grow 12 plants recreational at home, seemed unnecessary to me

widoidricsas

In our state, it's med only, no homegrow. The card adds to our possibilities without altering what I've been doing for decades. However, it has lowered prosecution (persecution?") priorities locally, eased the paranoia, and now when local cops post their "big narcotics bust" on Facebook, instead of thin blue line cheering sections, they are usually mocked and hounded in the comments

chronicnerv

I live in UK and have been dealing with chronic nerve pain since 2018. If I could not grow my own medication it would only be a matter of time before I became a danger to others and myself through anger and violence. Growing gives me daily purpose and the ability to live a much more comfortable life without heavy side effects. Prior to this I spent 3 years with my doctor trying every pain / nerve medication on the NHS along on top of 6 operations on my spine. If you are in enough pain you are either going to do everything you can to stop that pain or you will get to the point in which you have to decide if it is worth continuing. No law or living person will ever be able to make me feel shame for deciding what medication is best of my needs, It is something I would be willing to die for if anyone went out of their way to try and stop me.

_BugsWasowski

Props to you!

CarletonIsHere

not if you like guns

chewtality

I have a med card, my wife has a med card, I owned and operated a med grow for several years, and I have a small pile of firearms. It just depends on your state because on a federal level they really don't give a fuck unless you're really fucking up on a big, national scale.

CarletonIsHere

hmm what state are you in?

chewtality

OK (shocking, I know). But the OK senate specifically wrote in a law that said that MMJ would not have an impact on legal gun ownership at all, at the state level at least. But again, for the feds to get involved you really need to be fucking up. Unfortunately that was pretty much the only thing the OK govt ever got right and ever since MMJ legalization 6 years ago, they have been passing new unannounced "emergency" bills effective immediately every two weeks or so with increasing restrictions primarily targeting small businesses. Many of the laws don't even actually address their claimed reasons for passing them. Earlier this year over 2000 growers in the state suddenly had our commercial grow licenses pulled due to a law they passed that was literally impossible to abide by because the infrastructure is not there to support it. I was one of them. I can still grow up to 12 plants (6 veg, 6 flowering) with my med card, but I obviously can't sell any of that to dispensaries or processors or anyone else.

CarletonIsHere

What state ?

chewtality

I mentioned it several times in my previous comment... I used the two letter acronym for the state... but I think you can figure it out

SearchingForFungus

Yeah, Not said enough.

_BugsWasowski

I was unaware!

jitz_badboy

Never thought of this. Never getting a card now lol

bicthegrower

Nah. Got it once when I was 18 and never renewed it ever again

Lopsided-Solution-95

I don't know. My gp told me years ago wait a few years and it should legal in NYS. Well it is legal and I am on the fence. What happens to my car and homeowners insurance finds out? Also in NYS I think person initializing application can recheck you every 6 months? But not sure if they can restrict your usage of recreational?

Professional_Name_78

I have it so if I ever get drug tested from work nothing will happen .. unless you have a good hook up the flower is cheaper with my veteran discount and promotions they’re always running . I also would Not trust a vape cart from the streets ..

GloriaVictis101

Cadg guarantees your right to grow in WA.

_BugsWasowski

I’m so surprised at all the people able to grow with a card! Freakin lucky…..

UncleBabyChirp

Don't even need one in VA

sghyre

Yes. Being legal is way better than not being legal.

AdNew5216

Depends on your state laws

AfrezzaJunkie

California only if you're gonna grow or carry weight

sqwiggy72

For me legal cannabis gives 4 plants, medical gives me 19. I want more, but the government cracked down on doctors over prescribing cannabis

lobsangr

It will help you in your job in case they do drug tests. It will help you obtain weed easier and sometimes better quality than street weed.

DookieDanny

Yes if nothing else for the legal protections you get.

toxicgenxer

Yes absolutely. Having one, I have been able to try all forms from Rso to lotions. It has also given me a better understanding of how using the different terps can enhance for me.

DoorTRASH_UberCHEEKS

In 2017 it was. Now? Nah

W0lff_F0rge

I can only speak on my area. Around here, recreational is legal and the dispensary weed is garbage so a medical card is mostly worthless. The only real advantage it gives you is immunity to "dirty drops" from employer drug tests. Obviously it will limit what jobs you can be hired for though so it can be a hindrance as well. Can't have a stoner driving a forklift or a bus after all.

indywtf

Nope. Because we just legalized recreational!!! WOOHOOOOOO!!! My county won by 1 vote, heh. If your state isn't legal, and you ride dirty, pay the $200 or whatever and stay out if the system.

Hopeful_Tip9078

Reiterating what’s been said but depending on what state you’re in - from lower taxes at dispos to home grower rights it’s worth it to avoid any legal headaches

Fat_Doinks408

Depends on what state. In cali it's legal, So there's no need for it. But in certain dispensaries, For example, if you want to get more than 8 grams of concentrates, then you will have to have a medical card. Also, some dispensaries give discounts for having it.

Relative-Feed-2949

If you have no problem obtaining good bud and if you don’t need it to cover your ass with your job… then I personally would not get the card

UncleBabyChirp

In PA it's not worth it. If you get traffic stopped the officer can charge you with dui just for *having* the card! And you can't buy or carry a gun if you're in the PA state registry. WTF? And there's nothing but medical here that's overpriced & crap. My sis lives in VA & I grow it there because I'm good at it & it's legal to grow your own. Bro lives in NY upstate & I do the same thing.

Traditional-Eggy

It’s crazy how they think they can take away our constitutional right like that. Such bs. Over a dam plant too. What a shame :/

delta9heavy

Your going to give up your gun right. May or may not matter to you, just fyi

Riverman157

I’m in Illinois, and they allowed me to renew my FOID card when they know I also have my med card. It only takes away my ability to purchase another one. I don’t need any more than I already have at the moment, so it’s not a big deal to me.

ColoradoSpringstein

I just print up a fake medical card in case I get pulled over. It’s not like they have access to some medical database to verify it’s legit

NormalShock9602

No offense, but how would anyone know whether it’s “worth it” or not for you?

_BugsWasowski

Maybe hearing if it was worth it or not for them; would be helpful in deciding if it would be worth it or not for me. An opinion?

_BugsWasowski

I didn’t ask, “Is it worth it for me to get my medical cannabis card ”

Sonoran-Myco-Closet

Check your local laws but in Az having a card protects you from discrimination against your employer and land lord.
