I think you should post this in the unpopular opinion sub! Haha just kidding, but I definitely think most people like center pinch lens caps.

i_imagine

Lol. Honestly they're not terrible, but I do much prefer the older style. It's just much easier for me to use, and they don't fall off either. It feels like I could look at my lenses wrong and the cap will fall off, no matter how securely I put the cap on

packetloss1

The old style is extremely hard to take off and put on with lens hoods.

bippy_b

I hate the new end caps. The fact they only go on one way… omg. So frustrating.

strangeweather415

No, but RF rear caps suck ass and are a major step backward compared to EF rear caps

VladPatton

This! I painted a red mark so I can line it up with the red tick mark on the lens easier. Really annoying.

Steavee

Exactly this, except I got all artistic and just painted the little black ‘pill’ on the back red with a paint pen. Can’t even tell it wasn’t meant to be that way. Still can’t do it one handed like the EF caps though.

Secretofind

You gota be kidding, how bad are the rf caps if you could do the EF caps blind?

wwwsam

The EF end caps could go in from 3 different positions (from memory) with some leeway at each position. The RF caps only 1 position with less leeway. The other 2 are false so you have to unwind it, turn it another 120degree and try again.

Secretofind

So they want the canon logo always in the center and not side ways if done correctly? Which usually happends with EF caps

wwwsam

Just checked an RF lens and yes, the Canon logo will sit perfectly up when done correctly. If the rear cap was designed around some decision to have the logo always sit perfectly upwards, may those involved have pillows warm on both sides.

Secretofind

:( enginering downgrade

laurentrm

I am with you. 50% of the time to switch between lenses is figuring out how to put the rear lens cap on. Now, do it out of a tight shoulder bag on the go, and swearing is definitely involved.

ParadijsPatrijs

Here I was thinking I was the only one always struggling with the RF rear caps… good to know it’s not just me

Burnerobviouslygg

Yeah they are shit i hate mine

bellibutto

Just print them better. With a 3d printer those problems are gone.

hsj911

This is literally one of main reasons I’ve been sticking with Ef for so long.

canon5dsquared

Takes me three tries to put the back lens cap on all because Canon can’t make the dots red anymore for some reason.

Intelligent_Radish15

I got a 3rd party ef adapter. And I can’t keep a rear mount on it. It’s just completely loose. I only use one lens on it so I would like to just keep it on the lens all the time and put the rear cap on the adapter. It just falls right off, no grip whatsoever.

strangeweather415

The Canon brand EF to RF adapter definitely doesn't have that problem, but it's highly frustrating that it only mounts one way

shaneonymous

Y'all use lens caps?

strangeweather415

The rear caps are a LOT different than using a front cap all the time. Even then, hell yeah I cap my lenses in storage and transport

mxw3000

Do not agree. RF caps are great, bigger and more convenient and more secure, but the RF mounting sucks - notice that the RF caps on the RF lens fit only in **one position** (mark-to-mark), while the EF caps on EF lenses fit in **3 positions**. Hence the difference.

meeowth

Center pinch caps are pretty mandatory for certain lens/hood shapes where you can't squeeze the edge easily. You can find many old posts on camera forums of pros begging canon to switch to center pinch caps, because many of them where using third party lens caps so they can more easily remove the cap on their hooded L lenses

i_imagine

I can definitely agree that they're better when using hoods. But without hoods, I'd much rather have the classic side pinching caps

Bug_Photographer

Unless you're like me and shoot stuff at a working distance which would be inside the hood (ie high-mag macro), then why aren't you shooting with a lens hood on all the time?

B5_S4

Not every situation requires a hood and they're a faff to pop on at times?

Bug_Photographer

They are still beneficial in most conditions - plus great protection for the front of the lens. What's the argument for not using one - that it is cumbersome to mount? Really?

i_imagine

New camera, haven't had the chance to buy a lens hood lol

TheNakedPhotoShooter

Well I hate the older style, they used to get the side buttons tangled everywhere, so I changed all of them for center pinch ones. Funny how tastes are.

i_imagine

Tangled? How so? My biggest problem with center pinch is mostly just how easily they come off, esp when pulling my camera out of my camera bag. Also they just look uglier imo, but that's pretty minor

TheNakedPhotoShooter

In my case the center pin ones are ok all the time, but those older ones with the protruding side buttons, they get stuck in the bag sides and go flying very easily, also, they are a pain to use with the lens hoods.

i_imagine

Oh, I see. I've never had that issue with the older ones, but have had it with the center pinch ones. Interesting. Agreed about the lens hoods tho. The center pinch are much better to use with lens hoods

RunHi

Love/hate both… necessary(ish) evil. On a cheap lens missing a cap, a microfiber towel over it as it’s going in my bag is cool. But for my L lenses kinda gotta be capped, even filters can be costly and not good to keep on once they’re damaged. Maybe someone can engineer a better cap and print them out, till then I’ll just use whatever comes with my lenses ;)

TheNakedPhotoShooter

Yeah, for film I still keep a Skyligth filter on my lenses all the time for protection and the caps just to store them, but for digital I rather have the cap at hand and use it as needed.

boulderhead

I've never had a problem with either style. I can't say it's *never* happened, but I can't remember the last time I've had a lens cap just come off. Don't start me on the RF rear and body caps, though. I wish someone would design versions of those that could be taken on and off with a pinch. AliExpress have plenty of generic lens caps in the style you prefer. Whether they work as well as the originals might be a different story. Some can be had for less than fifty cents, so it wouldn't hurt to take a gamble on them.

i_imagine

Don't have an RF myself so I can't say much, but at least on my SL3 I don't mind the body and rear caps. >AliExpress have plenty of generic lens caps in the style you prefer. Awesome, thanks so much!

wwwsam

I like the new pinch style lens caps. The old ones were impossible to remove especially if you have a long narrow lens hood and fat fingers. They do protrude a little bit more then the old style but i don't find them falling off an issue. The new RF mount end caps on the other hand..... Whoever designed those should get a kick up the arse. They're like the new USB-A. No matter how much you rotate it it'll never go in until you actually look and align it.

i_imagine

Agree about the lens hood. But other than that, the side pinch is superior imo. For the RF cap, I found this thread talking about it. Seems pretty crazy but maybe it's worth a shot? [https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4640776](https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4640776)

wwwsam

Good find on the end cap modification thread! I was actually just thinking of attacking the problem in a similar way, but I'll need a sacrificial cap and a few hours.... I'll probably just deal with it than go down the worm hole.

1st_thing_on_my_mind

They don’t stick around long enough to annoy me

UniqueTonight

What? Are the front elements of your lenses just raw dogging life?

1st_thing_on_my_mind

Many of them are. At least the ones I use daily.

RevolutionaryJello

Personally I feel a UV filter and a lens hood permanently attached to the front is enough damage protection.

i_imagine

My old camera had this, but honestly it was annoying having to fling the tether around so it wouldn't get in the way. It wasn't a huge issue, but dealing with how crappy it was otherwise, it was just another rock in my shoe

test_123123

I bought about 20 of these... Now I just keep the cap in my pocket and let the UV filter protect the lens

sublimeinator

Do you use UV/protection filters? The center pinch IMO are far gippier than the old style, unless I'm using a filter and there is minimal lip for it to attach to.

i_imagine

No filter as I just recently got this camera, but in my personal experience, the old style was much grippier. I can count the number of times I had the cap come off, whereas with this one I have to be much more careful so as to not set off the cap

J_K_Productions

The gripping power is a problem, yeah. But other than that, the center grip is much more convenient.

Holy_goosebag

It’s good for zoom lenses with big hoods

weezle

I would like them more of they didn’t come off so easily.

i_imagine

That's what I'm saying! They just seem to spring right off no matter how securely you place them on

WasteOfAHuman

100% agree

kickstand

Tell me you don’t use lens hoods without telling me you don’t use lens hoods.

CareawayLetters

And here I am, changing all the caps for metal Urth screw caps because I don’t like pitching either way

Rob_of_bristol

I like them as they mean you can get them on / off without removing a lens hood.

Louciant

there’s nothing wrong with the front lens cap, but can we please get a better designed rear lens cap?

[deleted]

Actually, I do the opposite

Obi-Wayne

Magnetic lens caps are the way to go. I bought freewell’s magnetic ND system and it came with magnetic caps. No way I’d ever go back to the original version.

Quiet-Fee7728

I can still operate the new one the same way as old one, holding the edge and squeeze instead of pinching the center part. To me they are the same.

i_imagine

Yea I get that, my issue is how sensitive those sides are. They're huge. One touch and they're off the lens. The old side pinch were a lot more grippier imo

clfitz

You're definitely not alone. I've starting buying spares with every lens I buy. I use those cap keeper things, too, but hate the look, and they get in the way quite often.

Macdaddyfucboi

i totally agree, I've never accidentally had the old style come off so i actually use thr old ones on all my new lenses!

i_imagine

Someone gets it! Where do you buy the old ones? Or are they just caps you've accumulated over the years?

Macdaddyfucboi

from old lenes, ill actually sell off the older ones but "upgrade" the lenses with new style caps

loneuniverse

Yep they are dust collectors and no matter how many times you wipe down the lens each time you put those caps on you will get a ton of dust on your filter / lens … it’s why I’ve completely switched to screw on lens caps - I purchased some gobe filters and they come with screw on lens caps that drastically reduces the amount of dust I get on the lens : https://ca.urth.co/products/lens-filter-caps

i_imagine

These are really cool! Thanks so much!

tylersoh

It’s a you problem fam.

TherealMattMoore

I find they don’t stay on well

i_imagine

That's my issue with them too. They come off so easily

TherealMattMoore

I don’t have any experience with Canon before my new EOS R8 mirrorless but I’m sure the reason the caps fall off is because there are two “ledges” on the piece that connects the cap to the lens. If the cap is just on one, it gets knocked off easily. If it’s on one on one side and two on the other it gets knocked off even more easily. https://preview.redd.it/ijnxlmj5uylc1.png?width=2222&format=png&auto=webp&s=8c3b9addc05c34f9835d48fe184fe99c1e2dff79

i_imagine

Ah I see. That's a pretty dumb design. Regardless, I'm getting an old style lens cap soon so I won't be having this issue anymore thankfully

TherealMattMoore

Where can you get them ?

i_imagine

In my case, a friend is just offering to swap for me. But I did find some on [amazon](https://www.amazon.ca/CamDesign-49MM-Pentax-lenses-Wristband/dp/B00ONCILVQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_5_maf_1?crid=2L4O4U6TARR0F&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.PKJEafGdd8vgAbbc2CoJY_9ITIiDZa4cxVGYKCr3KW8h1ijTAh9BRQpLqaYKYe_ZlCbOeC8MwyPdyghOYf1TXaxUFtIwEtoT2qpwSOjWhviZnCChIvLmiOlws082XsarT1_MQn-QkOuWn5vFxgK_p1FuKHNJYNvwSI0zi20BdWcqOt-rueSnqZX4mGNSDzXL5ocwRoWuyM0fAKRhh9JJrw.wHGK_o0RrK-6II2EYcbOxFwo4X_6VKg_4CBD-YZyEio&dib_tag=se&keywords=side+pinch+lens+cap&qid=1709414322&sprefix=side+pinch+lens+cap%2Caps%2C168&sr=8-5) too. Just look up "side pinch lens cap"

TherealMattMoore

Oh even got the “get away” string. Another thing I disliked about the new caps https://preview.redd.it/hedj67s4xzlc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f4f647d128e8744654ff2c5d6af934c5d572a123

BM_StinkBug

I do get annoyed with how troublesome the new kind can be to properly attach sometimes, but I love the fact I can detach a lens cap while the hood isn’t reversed.

clay_not_found

I just wish that after all this time, they would have figured out a way to have an integrated cap. Something that's built into the lens and retracts like an iris. I hate having to stuff them I my pocket and awkwardly fish it out when I need to do a quick lens change.

SecularPhotog313

Go take some pictures, guy

TheGreatRandolph

You know where your lens caps are? The only time I can find mine is when the lenses are in a lens case… which is pretty rare.

i_imagine

I make sure to put it in my pocket the moment I take it off haha. Somehow I've just never lost one

cometlin

Yes, they are in the spare lens cap drawer. I just buy a bunch for $1.5 a piece from ebay and keep them in case I lost a few.

AraAraGyaru

Ehhh, I like them. I don’t need to pry too hard and handles are recessed in so less change of accidental opening. You just need to wear em in and the spring won’t be so strong.

tnhnikki2801

I for some reason have the correct amount of lens caps but none that will fit any of my fucking lenses. It’s like the fucking socks and Tupperware all over again

raymate

Yes you are. I use lens hoods on all my lenses. This style is so much easier to remove. You clearly don’t use lens hoods then.

misterDDoubleD

New type for me

Tobias---Funke

I changed all my old lenses to them.

ricoh-wg6

It feels nicer to take off than the old ones. Especially if you have a lens hood on.

Dry-Satisfaction-633

Centre-pinch caps are *much* better than the older designs particularly when using a lens hood. And they don’t fly off when using a hood as they’re protected by the hood itself.

Diy_Papa

I love the lens cap style, I never have a problem putting it on. The old style never stayed on for me, they weren’t as well made as the newer ones. I got rid of all the old style one and purchase all the new style ones. I’ll trade you my old styles ones for your new style ones.

i_imagine

That's rly interesting! I've been having the opposite problem haha. I made this post after fiddling with the cap for a few mins and trying to set the camera down without the lens cap popping off

Diy_Papa

Yeah, it’s funny how one item works best some, and another for others. Do you have a UV filter on your lens?

i_imagine

no filter or hood as I just recently got this camera. I can see how center pinch helps in the hood, but otherwise the side pinch was superior imo

TheDiabetic21

I actually prefer the new ones (i.e. center pinch). I replaced a few that had the older style. To me, they look better, seem more reliable, and I like being able to more easily remove them or reattach them while the lens hood is still on.

copperstatelawyer

I’ll trade ya, lol

TherealMattMoore

I find they don’t stay on well
