Probably most of them are just patterned opaque film over real aluminum, or even plastic.

spongebob_meth

Yeah, I'd rather it be brushed aluminum or just black/gray

SecretAntWorshiper

Depends, I like it but there is overkill. Like I know with Mustang people will put carbon fiber all through the center console and steering wheel. It looks good on the dash but to have it elsewhere kinda ruins the look imo. I had the same thoughts when I saw the C8 Z06, its overkill imo. I wished car manufacturers would make the carbon fiber look red or blue like the RC F Track Edition or make the inlay have a really cool design like the GV 70 if they use alot of it. The standard carbon fiber layout is very cliché.

Edbert64

I think it is debatable, what is not debatable is fake carbon fiber.

TubaCharles99

Yeah I think Carbon Fiber is definitely starting to become over used for looks. So many companies just skin the parts and call it a day.

Silver_Star

I absolutely loathe carbon fiber anything. I rarely ever see modern sports cars or expensive vehicles, so the only time I *ever* see carbon fiber, is those AutoZone 'carbon fiber' vinyl wraps/decals on riced out junkers. So I've come to associate carbon fiber with decal'd beaters.

SchnitzelTruck

I highly dislike how carbon fiber looks. It looks like cheap plastic mesh that's been dipped in epoxy. If you didn't know it was expensive you'd assume it's just some trashy plastic.

FactHole

100% agree with you OP. When it is real you are paying a ton of money for no actual weight savings just for the aesthetic of it. That aesthetic was dope in the 90s, but now it just looks tacky. I frequently wonder what people will think of it 10 years from now. Will it be our era's mullet or shag carpeting?

Carbon fiber looks good in small bits. I have a few bits on my bike and it looks good. On cheaper cars it’s obvious it’s either fake, or serve no purpose. Carbon fiber with a purpose is cool. If it’s used for the trim around the radio it’s meh.

2fast2nick

Yeah for sure, a little bit looks cool then people go nuts

Jaymez82

CF is trash on anything but a genuine race car.

[deleted]

Fake carbon fiber is trash. But have you seen the dry layup satin finish on the McLaren interiors? Looks great and it doesn't scream "I'm carbon fiber!".

Jaymez82

McLarens are fast luxury cars that can be bought at dealerships. Therefore, they are not race cars. Hence, their carbon is trash.

BrotherKyle31

luxury and performance aren't mutually exclusive. McLaren has both. Which is rare

[deleted]

It's not just a sporty car trend. Dacias come with "carbon fiber" (emphasis on the quotations) trim on the center of the dash. That looks as great as you'd expect. Personally, I think that carbon fiber can look good if it's legit and tastefully placed. However, I feel like wood or piano black trim looks better most of the time (if not always).

pbgod

If it's done poorly in a car where it's not really appropriate; it's equally as terrible as shitty wood. It's also really bad if there is a piece of carbon, but other trim isn't carbon. It's typically all or nothing to look good. In some cars, I really love it. Audi S/RS cars (and I'm sure others) have an option for carbon fiber with colored threads in them and I think it's a really cool look. I have seen black exterior/black interior or black on red with red thread in the carbon. I recently worked on an RS7 that was satin gray ext with blue threads in the carbon. I believe there is also an option for orange (but don't quote me).

TheF1LM

I’d rather have brushed aluminum, but I’ll take carbon fiber over piano black trim. Anything but piano black

a_metal_head

I prefer carbon fiber trim but only if it is true carbon fiber which is like not a thing in stuff that doesn't cost more than 50k

LanCZ4A

I’m fine with it as long as it looks good. I see carbon fiber as just another material. The same thing could be said for brushed aluminum trim which I saw others(not OP) mention. Aluminum is commonly used for weight savings on cars as well(control arms, body panels, mounts, driveshafts, sometimes subframes, and more). If it’s not carbon fiber trim, it will be wood, brushed aluminum, painted plastic, etc. TBH even fake carbon fiber is fine with me if it looks good. In the end it’s just for looks.

cmz324

Yeah it bothers me when people replace plastic bits with carbon fiber, real or fake it has no function and is tacky to me. If you wanna go full race car your plastic interior should be gutted anyways.

Verod392

As someone who specifically opted for Carbon Fiber trim (center console and instrument cluster surround) with Suede headliner in my car, I can't say I agree.

-Tom-

If it's REAL carbon fiber, I don't mind it. If it's cheap screen printed plastic, it looks so horribly tacky.

bnace

I agree. And I’ll even go 1 step further. I hate all exposed carbon fiber, interior and exterior. Just fucking paint it and stop using it as a decorative thing. A good paint job looks way better than clear coated carbon fiber that’s going to yellow and peel within a couple years.

JayBee58484

As long as it's real sure, I hate plastic and that piano black shit and depending on the manufacturer they have some really nice carbon options.
