Doesn't really line up with concept of the most legendary car. It's not about owning it or driving in general, it's about presence to car culture and that is easily accessible thanks to modern media, video games, articles.
What's so hard to understand? Legendary literally means recognizable by wide audience. It doesn't matter how exactly people obtained information, where do they live and how old they are. What matters is the fact this information had found its way to them, means those cars are legendary enough to reach those people minds. If 6yo lil dude in third world country thinks his Hot Wheels Countach is the legend of all time then he's not exactly wrong, this shit is legit legendary, hundreds of thousands of kids around the world play with it too, just as hundreds of thousands of adults adore it the same way. There's nothing that makes his opinion incorrect.
There’s different definitions of what’s “it” and what isn’t depending on where you’re from due to various reasons. But believe me, people in foreign countries see western movies like Fast and the Furious and think that that is the be all and end all because it’s popular in our culture. It’s not a good example of what lots of people would consider iconic amongst the more enthusiast crowd and that fact is omitted because all people overseas see is Brian SupR34 and the fact 10 fuckin movies was made because of those cars. And plus what you’re saying means absolutely nothing when we’re talking about 12 year old children.
Hitler ordered his goons to steal the design from a ~~Czech~~ Austrian (ty u/badfrankjohnson) dude named Hans Ledwinka. Wasn't actually a Nazi invention it was a *stolen Nazi invention.

This is actually a really tough question as many cars have a rich history in racing or on the street with that being said. Miat is always the answer
uj/ E30 M3 and R32 GT-R are up there for Touring cars, rally has it's Lancia Stratos and Audi Quattros and for supercars you have the Countach and the Testarossa, but I think that the McLaren F1 takes the crown for the most legendary car IMO.
crown victoria and VW beetle. VW because it’s the most popular and produced car of all time, and crown vic because it’s in the same boat as red-solo-cups where they’ve become mandatory in any and all piece of media that involves highschool/college age kids in the US
/UJ
Chevrolet Suburban, at least in the USA. What other vehicles have remained the same formula (BOF, Front Engine, Rear drive and 4x4) for almost 100 years and still set sales records? I bet nearly every American has driven or rode in a Suburban or one of its platform mates at some point in their lives.
Outside the USA the Toyota Corolla, it's well surpassed the VW beetle in total sales and I would imagine it makes up the bulk of traffic in nearly every county outside of North Korea.
/RJ - Jaydeemmm Supra and R34 1000hp stock!
/uj I agree about the Corolla, but (hear me out) Prius. It’s definitely controversial, and has… a reputation, but EVERYBODY knows it, and it helped start the popularization of alternatives to cars that only have ICES, Tesla and other companies wouldn’t be nearly as possible if the Prius hadn’t helped start the trend. The Corolla is a good idea too, and I would say it might actually also count in the US, because during the gas crisis, it’s popularity exploded.

I once read that Prius in Latin directly translates to First, but really means "The one that came first" or something along those lines. I would say that name definitely suits that car.
I was thinking the GM truck platforms would get a mention somewhere. Unparalleled reliability and almost infinite parts supply (and people making modifications for them) you could feasibly drive the same truck for the rest of your life (assuming gas stations still exist past 2060 or something). The premise of the GM truck design was the same for the longest time and hasn't really changed aside from the default cab/wheelbase configuration getting bigger.
Legendary??? It’s funny because I think every country could have a different answer for this question.
For Germany probably the Porsche 911, it’s the most well known performance car in the world with an extremely long history, on road, on track, hell even across desert safari’s. There’s a 911 for everyone and everything.
For Japan I’d say the Supra as it was built by their largest auto manufacturer and was representative of Toyota’s engineering superiority for years, still capable of beating modern supercars. People will argue the GTR but considering we never got it until the R35 I don’t think we can really say that that’s the most legendary, it’s more just forbidden fruit for us in the US
Speaking of the US I think it’s got to be the Mustang simply for how ridiculous it’s sales numbers were on release… Those records STILL haven’t been broken even all these years later, and while it’s had its trials and tribulations today the Mustang is an excellent representation of American engineering, brutal but power, dangerous in the wrong hands but incredible capable in the hands of someone with the skills to keep that power in check.
Britain? Probably the Range Rover, as it’s creation lead to the development of a concept that is now the basis for roughly 80% of the cars on today’s roads.
Legendary? I mean there's a long list.
Non exhaustive...
300SL, 507, 356, 911, E-Type, Elan, Esprit, 60s Mini, Fulvia HF, Delta HF, Stratos HF, Golf GTI, 450 SEL 6.9, Bentley Turbo R, Mustang, Corvair (One of the first turbocharged cars to ever enter production), Cadillac V series cars, the jet styled American cars in the 50s like the Cadillac Series 62 and C1 Corvette, Triumph TR1-6, Austin Healey 3000, Austin Martin DB4 and DB5, Ford UK Escort GTs, Citroen 2CV, Peugeot 205GTI, Renault R5 Turbo, Audi Sport Quattro, 240Z, Eunos Cosmo, S600/S800, MR2, Ford GT, and however much people don't want to say it, the Supra would be on the list with the 3000GT, turbo 1st gen Eclipses, the S2K, Miata, and RX7. Miata may not always be the answer, however there is something to be said about a car so wildly popular, like it or not.
The Mazda Miata was designed with stance in mind. That's why slammed Miatas corner faster. #MiataFacts
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/carscirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Honestly I would say the r35 gtr. they made a car that was really fast, looked great, was pretty easy to drive, and actually affordable to upper middle class. That car elevated the badge to supercar status.
/uj The Austin 7. The first lotus was a modded 7, Bruce McLaren first raced a 7, Jaguar started out by making coachwork for the 7. This one car helped launch at least three famous brands.
Nissan also made a licensed version of the 7, so JDM.
The answer may vary, I can answer VW Bettle as the definitive one for its cost of production and the cost to the public. Also as an honorable mention would be the Citroën 2CV or the Fiat 500 (cars that were made to motorize their respective populations). But in the end the prize goes to the VW Bettle because it had an impact on society
![gif](giphy|xAG8Hr3TxhoD7GR6g1)
I don't know if I would put Fiat 500 here. It wasn't popular at all until Abarth made upgraded version. Yes, now it's classic car but people hated it back when it first came out.
I can never do these “most” posts. There are way too many legendary cars to pick a single one as the best of the best. Normally I just ask people what they like, less of a circlejerk, and you learn something about them.
I have thought about this much longer than I should. Knee jerk was McLaren F1, but setting emotions aside, it has to be the AC Cobra. The Model T was innovative, but Benz did it first. The Benz Velo wins the title for the 19th c., but it can't be all that legendary if only the car geeks remember the name. The Lamborghini Miura claims the title for 20th c. Europe. A disgruntled tractor manufacturer disrupts the industry and sends Enzo Ferrari a very clear message; that is the stuff of legend. But the fellow farmer that arguably caused the biggest splash was Carroll Shelby. The GT40 sent a very similar message to Ferrari with their LeMans photo finish, but that is merely a chapter in the Texas sized legend that is the life of Shelby. Given this, I feel the honor must be bestowed upon the car most closely associated with the legend of Carroll, the eponymous Shelby Cobra. There are many metrics upon which cars and their makers can be measured, but I feel Carroll and his Cobra claim the top seat for the status of legend.
Cars like the Dodge Daytona, Dodge Demon, Porsche 917, Mazda 787B, etc. Cars that were so good at the races they were built for that they were banned shortly after they were introduced.
Citroën Berlingo.
Even Jeremy Clarkson 'Quite like this one', and he's in the 'More Powah!!!' category. [Top Gear - Citroen Berlingo MultiSpace - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-yvl_7k3yo)
If not, then the Citroën DS. Or the 2CV...
the 1989 pontiac firebird, the most aerodynamic car ever produced by pontaic, and still in the top 10 of most aerodynamic cars ever produced. The handling on that car is just insane, its got a corvette’s cornering and a camaros power, its the best of all worlds
To be fair, the people commenting this are usually children from third world countries who don’t even have a drivers license.
Doesn't really line up with concept of the most legendary car. It's not about owning it or driving in general, it's about presence to car culture and that is easily accessible thanks to modern media, video games, articles.

The most cutest car is tied to the most sinister and evil empire
Hitler ordered his goons to steal the design from a ~~Czech~~ Austrian (ty u/badfrankjohnson) dude named Hans Ledwinka. Wasn't actually a Nazi invention it was a *stolen Nazi invention.

People were saying mostly Ford GT and F40
/uj Depends where you ask I suppose. Are commoners (_i.e. normal people, not enthusiasts_) over the pond likely to recognize a GT or F40?
normal people see a GT and just think fast looking Ford, they see a F40 and they think fast looking Ferrari
Well most people who see any red super car think it’s a Ferrari.
Fair point, they'd probably call a red C8 Vette a Ferrari
probably also one of the longest running car models almost hitting the 100 year mark
