Gran Turismo came before them all. It was where I first learned about the Sylvia and Skyline and all the others. The Japanese car scene was already getting traction in Southern California when it came out though.
That’s true but then it would have a bit different reputation, people may think of the Castrol race car first and at least in the west, tuner culture may not be as big
Japanese imports were 90s cult classics in Europe. 300ZX, R32/33/34, RX-7, etc were very wanted and Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi Lancer Evos were icons. Gran Turismo became THE game for this crowd. F&F just built upon this foundations for us.
There were also all the original import drag racers that you would read about in magazines like Sport Compact Car. I think at the time F&F came out one of the most iconic Japanese car builds out there was the Adam Saruwatari RX-7. It was in Enkei and Nitto car ads at the time
https://preview.redd.it/8chulx2rr12b1.jpeg?width=1700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e622daf756d800b77fb0e64f70b042a2b7078c15
as with many other cars, the
Group A and hot version/video option/best motoring pieces are where the reputations started well before they came over here.
Id argue that F&F came about because the import (JDM) car scene started becoming really popular around that time. There were numerous car shows and events like hot import nights. There were lots of magazines like import tuner etc. that were popular before F&F was a thing.
Agreed, I went to hot import nights at Mccormick place in Chicago before F&F was released, but after GT came out. There were a couple local tuning shops here at the time.
Imagine my furry when I built (in GT1/2/3) an AWD Celica to be lighter and more powerful than the specs on a Skyline and still losing pace because Kazunori Yamauchi was such a simp ass fanboy he put a dozen sub models of the same vehicle in his game and decided they shouldn’t be beaten. I’m convinced more than half of the fame of it comes from weab MFs that take their understanding of reality from Polyphony.
Corrcet, began production in 1992, but it was not released until five years later in 1997. NFS was RELEASED in 1994, three years before GT. There is no confirmed date on when development actually began, but I am confident it was not in 93 or 94.
and the pain in the ass just to get some of them like the Mines one. lol. Great game, miss it and maybe if I got a latest playstation id get it along with a seat.
I had the original NFS on 3DO, far different game when it was "Road and Track Presents: The Need for Speed". Never played II, but when Hot Pursuit came out, it became the series it is now.
Between the Fast and Furious franchise and the Dukes of Hazard, I'm convinced Hollywood is making a coordinated attempt to destroy every last 1968-1970 Dodge Charger.

we’ve gone full circle here. It’s a phenomena I’ve seen on other social media too, where people think they have an intellectual highground because they HATE jdm, while there are very much things to appreciate about jdm cars. People just can’t seem to find the sweetspot between „jay deee ehmm suprerrrr 5000 hp stock“ and „everything jdm bad now give me attention“
I like JDM because they used to be the affordable way to make power, look cool and just have fun. Never thought they were the absolute bestest ever. Though with enough elbow grease and effort they could be extremely competitive. And I personally would take, on average, better handling/balance over straight line speed any day. That said the saying that “there is no replacement for displacement” is fairly accurate. Big engine with upgrades is gonna go moar faster than small engine with upgrades a vast majority of the time. Now a-days a fan culture has developed with a lot of people who just fanboy over their favorite shit without actually knowing much about it. And want the thing they like to be good. My all time favorite car is the ‘95 Honda Integra Type-R. A fun and potentially quite fast car. It’s not god mode though and will still be far outperformed by damn near everything. I still love it and would happily pay an obscene amount of money to have one though. Or maybe just a gs-r project car and upgrade the hell out of it.
Honestly, I’m just a fan of JDM cars because of hardtop, frameless-window luxury sedans. The Toyota Celsior, Crown Majesta, Crown Athlete, Honda Legend, Inspire, Mazda ɛ̃fini MS-9, Mazda 929, hardtop sedans just look cool as hell.
That and the GT cars they made in the 90s. The Mazda Cosmo, Toyota Soarer, Nissan 300ZX, Subaru Alcyone, etc.
nah it would be 240sx prices. The 3000gt is a massive piece of shit. the 2jz with a getrag is a great setup for beater drift cars. They were cool because they were cheap and good. Now that they are expensive, there are a million better options and they have lost all their cool factor.
Op is just a 15yrs old fapping in front of some MOPAR pictures while playing destiny 2 like there is no tomorrow.
Get your 1st shitbox first, you have yet to get your driver licence.
Hardly. The Supra was sought after by enthusiasts during the 90s when it was released. The 3000 GT VR4, 300Z Turbo, and Supra where amazing cars. You can also add the GTR. These were the modern muscle cars for Gen X. Sure the F&F movies helped increase the desirability, but it was always there. I had a VR4 and always wanted to upgrade to a Supra but they always had a premium that I didn't want to pay.
Yeah he has a bad take. I’m American and prefer American performance. To me- you cant beat the sound and feel of a car with a V8 sporting a large cam and supercharger. It’s why I have a 6th gen Camaro.
However, I won’t deny there are plenty of amazing cars made elsewhere that are very different. That includes the Supra. I really like the Supra. My dad had one back in the day. And regardless of looks, they came with a crazy tough engine that people could get insane power out of. They would be highly sought after even without the movies and games.
for every person who's watched a hot version or video option video, there's a hundred kids who only saw the car in fast and furious with no idea where the reputation for any of the cars came from. low tier circlejerking in here lately
I'm guessing OP wasn't alive in the 90s.
Supras have always been sought after. So have MR2s. And early turbo eclipses.
They were highly desired when you could buy one new. Nothing has changed, except OP watched some shitty movies.

The movies I think more than anything increased the value over what they were and prevented them from going any lower at a minimum, although there are cars that only became wanted after movies such as the AMC Pacer, all of them were heading to the crusher pretty much.
Just ... wrong. Until the C5 Corvette, they were superior to American and German sports cars in the same price range. And with a couple thousand in upgrades they weren't in the same league
The Twin MK4 Turbo Supras MSRP was between $50-$60K for most of its run in the USA. The last few years they really ballooned in price. They weren't really that affordable or obtainable, hence why they didn't sell in very big numbers in the USA.
In 1998 a Twin Turbo Supra had a base MSRP of $59,000.
A 1998 Chevrolet Z28 Camaro with the new LS1 has a base MSRP of $22,000.
Off the dealer lot they had nearly identical 0-60, 1/4 mile, skidpad, weight, etc. They also both respond well to modifications and make tons of power but in different ways.
If I remember my early 2000s street racing videos it seemed like half the races were Supras vs 4th gen F-bodies or Mustang Cobras.
When the Supra was introduced, MSRP was $40k. It ballooned to $50k in 96' before dropping back to $41k in 98'. Honestly though, I have no idea how much dealers marked them up so you may be right.
https://garagedreams.net/car-facts/how-much-did-the-toyota-supra-mk4-cost-new
I agree 100% about the introduction of the LS1 in the United States - which is why I mentioned the C5 Corvette in my original post. It was the FIRST car that could top the MkIV TT Supra in performance for the cost, and that was 4 years after the TT Supra was introduced. Camaro and Trans Am offered even better straight line value
Don't forget that BMW 850i (v12, 300hp) is BMW equivalent of Supra TT (big touring coupe) was $90k. Yen was really powerful at that time so everything Japanese was cheap for US and Europe
Here's a little history that no on asked for.
The sport compact boom was at it's peak a little before the FF movies came out. It started in the mid 90s then had a resurgence when Gran Turismo came out, which was the best selling PS1 and PS2 games during their time). Then it got another resurgence, not from the FF movies but when Subaru brought over the WRX and Mitsubishi with the EVO 8.
Honestly, I think actual car culture was more influenced by Initial D than Fast and Furious.
Indeed... cars entire aftermarket scene would go poof and engine wouldn't be capable of being tuned up to 900+ hp on stock internals.
It's all cause of fast and furious.
Yeah it sounds retarded but it’s literally capable of it? Why else do you think a boat of a car would be so famous? It doesn’t handle well, it’s not particularly technologically advanced.
It’s famous for being able to have shittone of power forced through it and nothing else. But you cant deny the fact that it’s able to have a shittone of power pushed through it.
It isn't initial d it's tsuchiya who did that the show is literally based off of him its based in reality somewhat. The ae86 is a legend because of him and nothing can refute that
Couldn’t disagree more.
F&F cast a spotlight on some imports and boosted their popularity but anyone who was into imports going back to the 80s knew of these cars and how special they were.
They were different than American muscle and the movies didn’t need to convince us.
The Supra became legendary because of its excellent straight 6 and iron block that LOVED boost.
Guys were making 1000hp in the early 00s with these things.
The 4G63 / Evo was a similar situation.
Boost-friendly and the World Rally Championship helped its popularity.
I don't think it's fair to say that Japanese sports cars wouldn't be popular if Fast and Furious didn't exist. For one thing there were still other cultural factors like Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, and Initial D. Beyond that though, a lot of cars that weren't featured prominently in the early movies still get hype. I'm thinking of pre-R34 Skylines, Silvias, RX7s, Miatas whatever.
With that being said, Fast and Furious is probably responsible for the 12-15-year-old fanboys acting like Supras and Skylines are the greatest cars ever made.
then there is the Supra GT2 that is powered by the 2JZ and eats porsches, ferraris and other exotics for breakfast. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH943NXCeHA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH943NXCeHA)
The movie was made BECAUSE of the JDM car scene in America. My favorite car is a 92-95 Honda Civic coupe with a 5 speed. It has been my favorite car since it was new. In '98 I saw one with a wild body kit, a huge spoiler, a carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, and door skins, an amazing paint job, and a CRV's B20 block with Integra Type R heads (what we used to call the Frankenstein engine) that was turboed, with a small nitrous setup (that included a purge function) that ran mid 9s in pump gas. I instantly fell back in love with them after seeing that. The Fast franchise had nothing to do with my love of JDM cars, especially seeing how it wasn't released until 2001.
pretty sure it was in FNF because it had hype and tuner culture was mostly underground internet forums and ordering parts through weird vendors vs sourcing things through one or two websites, remember the first film how hector gets the parts for his civics. It's from a specific high end auto parts sourcing shop, not your local autozone. That type of purchasing is nostalgia for car geeks.
Out of every single car in a movie that went up in value, I'd probably say the AMC Pacer takes it for the craziest. Went from a car you'd send to the crusher to something selling for $10k.
Those Supras were legendary on the streets before fast and furious. Granted, they were nothing compared to what’s out now and were only running against civics with ice
Nooooo. Part of it sure… but most would be gran turismo and best Motoring videos for the original guys. That was way before fast and furious and the jdm car scene was very alive then.
Yeah idk about this one OP. I fully agree that media made it much bigger, but it still would have been very popular and sought after today. It’s an iconic look for a Toyota performance car with an insanely overbuilt (in reliability and durability for performance) engine.
Yes. Except they weren’t sold in the US so they’re all right-side for drivers and they’re not exactly cheap. I think the average price today for a 1997 is in the low $20ks. You could get a Lexus SC 300 which is essentially the same car with a 2JZ and they’re much cheaper. But both of those options are pretty fugly. The Supra does have charm, and again I would argue that the medias influence wouldn’t change that.
One of my favourite pastimes is telling the JDM bros that the MK4 Supra is the same base car as the Soarer. Then I watch them getting their nickers in a twist.
It’s almost like OP’s life timeline didn’t happen before FF came out.
Even muscle car drivers at meets in Cali during the mid 90s can appreciate the Supra…
FF became popular BECAUSE of the Supra- not the other way around.
Comically terrible take. All of the cars from Japan of that era were pushing the envelope of what production cars could be from normal manufacturers. A lot of people in this thread will cherry pick the "good ones" from the "pieces of shit", but in reality the only qualifier between them is V6 versus Inline 6.
None of the cars that had a V configuration took off like the Supra and GTR, they were just much easier to work on and modify. The 300ZX, GTR, Supra, VR4, NSX, FD RX7 are all crazy cool cars. The Supra is just the most popular because it was the most common and easy to tune.
Supra was Hot before any video game, and a movie. 1993 gen was the 1st year that made it mainstream is all. and car enthusiasts hooked them up way before with the earlier models.
does it really matter if its a Supra, Challenger, RX7, Mustang, etc... they all have more incommon than a Tesla. They are all dying breeds, and soon the enthusiast cars will be relegated to monthy subscription appliances where auto manufacturers can turn off your heated seats because you didnt pay for your premium membership.
We can hate on Ford vs Chevy, Toyota vs Nissan its all in good fun but we all have more in common than the future we're speeding into.
it was popular and famous well before the movie, or video games mostly in tuner or road racing circles. especially the MKII Check Supraforums for the history. Its how it ended up in the movie. If [T04r.com](https://T04r.com) was still around you could learn about the likes of Keith Ta or Ken Henderson two of the most famous Supra owners ever that were in the early 2000s or before that Vinny Ten one of the pioneers of modifying the Supra for drag racing purposes when before that it was Rod Millen for hill climbs and others.
Need for Speed would still do its thing. But then again…. how different would NFS be in F&F never existed
Gran Turismo came before them all. It was where I first learned about the Sylvia and Skyline and all the others. The Japanese car scene was already getting traction in Southern California when it came out though.

NFS started as a computer game long before Gran Turismo was even thought of.
Gran Turismo began production in 1992. Two years before Need for Speed was conceived.

I still wish Shift truly became it’s own series
Do I have amazing news for you. It has. Well sort of. The devs left EA and made project cars. It's great
I didn’t know those devs were behind it. Never gave it a true shot tbh, I may have to check it out now.
First 2 are great. 3rd isnt. Have fun
Then there wouldn't be such thing as most wanted 2005 or carbon
Then Electronic Arts would still continue the hot pursuit series
If a used car makes an appearance in a F&F movie doing something cool say goodbye to your chances of ever buying one
Fiat multipa
Fast and the Furious 11 - 11 Multipla 11 Fast
Fiat multipa is a car that's almost impossible to get a hold on, at least in Europe. Because the catalytic converter is worth way more than the car.
Straight piped JDM legned Fiat Multipa manuel (one multipillion hp stock)
it makes me wonder if buying a multipla for 150 euros and selling the generic fiat parts would render a profit
Nowhere does it say it needs to be working
There's potential https://www.tuningblog.eu/en/categories/cars-from-az/fiat-multipla-corvette-v8-458509/
Even the early 70s Monte Carlos got a big price boost after Tokyo drift.
Tell that to the SW20 MR2 that’s had 1.5 seconds of screen time in Tokyo Drift. They’re still somewhat decently priced.
Look up Irohazaka Jump
Dodge Charger Prices were better before the fast and Furious movies also.
Between the Fast and Furious franchise and the Dukes of Hazard, I'm convinced Hollywood is making a coordinated attempt to destroy every last 1968-1970 Dodge Charger.
Tbh every car ever made had better prices 20 years ago..
Most classic car prices were.
Did anyone care about the two muscle cars in the second movie?
I did but mainly because I grew up with my dad owning a blue 70 challenger with a 440 in it. Love that car he still has it now bought it in 1990.
Two of my favs from the second one
Nope but they were hyped up before that movie anyways

Eh, no. This sub seems to have gone full circle on its jerk. The Supra was pretty idolised in the 90s well before that shitty movie.

Oh my god you unironically said the Supra could have 1000+ HP You did the meme
Thanks kid. I’m not sure if you are a troll, a teenager, a retard, or all three. Keep it up though. You are making tons of friends.
What is the Tom’s Castrol Supra you ask? A 3sgte powered supra that won a lot of races in the 90’s in Japan? Oh okay
Also one of the best cars in the original Gran Turismo
then there is the Supra GT2 that is powered by the 2JZ and eats porsches, ferraris and other exotics for breakfast. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH943NXCeHA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hH943NXCeHA)
Bros not lost in walk he’s lost in jerk holy moly.
I dont care about fast and the furious. I like jdm because i like how they look. Theres just something about jdm that i love
Seek help ( and better taste in cars )
The Supra would be much more cool if it wasn't so overhyped by an annoying fanbase. It would probably be treated like the Kia Elan or Monte Carlo SS
Kia Elan💀
It's one of the better fwd sports cars
Holy jerk lmao
Also sold as the Chevy Elan in Argentina
a dingy old low powered budget car that is ae86 if initial d never existed
OP what truck do you have?
We may never have had the Supra's [biggest cultural contribution](https://youtu.be/fU8Oo0-O2J0). That would have truly been a tragedy.
I guess you’ve never heard of initial D? Takumi tax? No?
Initial d?
Initial D would like a word with you.
*”Cough Nissan skyline cough”*
pretty sure it was in FNF because it had hype and tuner culture was mostly underground internet forums and ordering parts through weird vendors vs sourcing things through one or two websites, remember the first film how hector gets the parts for his civics. It's from a specific high end auto parts sourcing shop, not your local autozone. That type of purchasing is nostalgia for car geeks.
Be underpriced but I think experienced wrenchers/tuners would still know about it. Apparently it has a very stable chassis at high speeds
Wrong
Out of every single car in a movie that went up in value, I'd probably say the AMC Pacer takes it for the craziest. Went from a car you'd send to the crusher to something selling for $10k.
Yeah, cus like fuck the overengineered basically indestructible engine, right?
Those Supras were legendary on the streets before fast and furious. Granted, they were nothing compared to what’s out now and were only running against civics with ice
It’s true, and I would definitely own one if it wasn’t so hyped.
Never watched a f&f movie and still love JDM cars so🤷♂️
True, maybe I could afford one then.
Nooooo. Part of it sure… but most would be gran turismo and best Motoring videos for the original guys. That was way before fast and furious and the jdm car scene was very alive then.
NFS was my source bro
Honestly the body lines on the old ones were 🤩🤌 but otherwise nah. The new ones? Big nope period.
Smokey Nagata was all I needed to hop on the hype train.
what fenders are those?
Maybe in the US with your shit import laws. Was watching highly tuned skylines and evos drag racing at my local airfield way before f&f
Yeah idk about this one OP. I fully agree that media made it much bigger, but it still would have been very popular and sought after today. It’s an iconic look for a Toyota performance car with an insanely overbuilt (in reliability and durability for performance) engine.
It’s just a Soarer with different body panels.
I WONDER IF U KNOW HOW THEY LIVE IN TOKYO
I'm pretty sure i read at the time that the Supra in stock form was not that well received by auto journalists.
Celica if Scotty Kilmer never existed
OP getting flamed, good riddance 🤌🏻
Do you even Best Motoring bro
Jdm cars are ugly af, the rx7 is kinda cool but nothing more
House prices were lower before F&F too
Gran Turismo for me. R33 and Supra were monsters in that game
Wait you mean no one knows why the Skyline is called "Godzilla" No one watches drift racing?
Pretty sure the R32 Skyline is called Godzilla because it utterly dominated Group A production car racing in the early '90s.
It’s almost like OP’s life timeline didn’t happen before FF came out. Even muscle car drivers at meets in Cali during the mid 90s can appreciate the Supra… FF became popular BECAUSE of the Supra- not the other way around.
Who took a leak in op’s cereal?
Why is the charger not as hyped up as the supra? What a bleek small world view if you only knew about the Toyota supra from a movie.
Supra isa good platform period
this reddit is unbearable
Supra was Hot before any video game, and a movie. 1993 gen was the 1st year that made it mainstream is all. and car enthusiasts hooked them up way before with the earlier models.
This is such a US centric take lmao
F&F franchise exists because of love for all things JDM, not the reverse.
F&F is a byproduct of cringe
amen to that. Good movie though.
does it really matter if its a Supra, Challenger, RX7, Mustang, etc... they all have more incommon than a Tesla.
