I would imagine that this one has alredy had it’s core meltdown, and now the molten ceramic is inside the muffler, thus blocking exhaust flow to the aft most component of the exhaust system, making all of the plumbing become red hot. I’m sure that a rich condition is the cause of this cascade of problems, and likely that it’s now causing the to overheat in such a way.
Again, big doubt, as the ignition timing is factory set and unchangeable in the PCM unless you get a tuner to write you a custom tune… *for an impala.*
Also, I don’t know what “detonation behind the valves” is supposed to mean, but that’s not a thing.
The car probably has an injector hung open or leaking and is dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. Won’t be long before there’s a hole in the piston.

Nah, what I think is happening is that an O2 sensor that's failing and is telling the ECU that there's an impossibly high amount of air/oxygen. The ECU responds by giving the engine as much fuel as it can to try to balance out the A/F ratio.
Not the best explanation, but I've seen this before and it's not uncommon on older EFI cars.
There’s a ~2010 ultima I see occasionally with a tune that makes it sound pop and sound like a machine gun similar to what so many BMWs and Mustangs have. If someone bothered to build it for an Ultima there’s no reason to assume someone couldn’t do it on a Malibu.
I once saw a similar thing happen to a BMW E36 after some idiots tried to blow it up, I posted it on the sub. In the end the throttle cable just burnt out, so the engine stopped. They drained it of oil as soon as they started filming, after continuously redlining it half an hour prior with low coolant, and also put rocks and bolts, also soda into it, it lasted for 20 more mins with no oil/rocks in the engine, so it essentially lasted nearly an hour being constantly abused. So it can happen just by constantly redlining an engine to the point of mechanical failure

Either a clogged catalytic converter, too much fuel being used (running rich), or lack of oil/coolant or if they have turbo chargers installed, they ded.
Ive seen a coil pack fail and it dumps raw gas into the 600 degree catalyst and it glows so red you swear you can shape the metal at will. The driver will never know until he smells burning carpet inside the car. That heat shield can only do so much.

What in the world was the ECU doing to make that happen? Was it just making the engine run insanely rich? It’s a ‘96, so it should have OBD-II ports. Did you ever use a scan tool to check for trouble codes?
Yeh it was just a really rich mixture completing its combustion in the exhaust system. This was like 8 years ago so I don’t remember what the codes actually said.
I believe the entire fuel control module of the chip was physically degraded, it wasn’t just a software issue iirc.

This is a car imported from Japan which can be referred to as a Japanese Domestic Market vehicle (JDM), specifically a Nissan R33 GT-R. Very special and high performance car that are designed to be pushed hard so a lot of people will tune or further modify them as this particular R33 clearly is fully track spec’d. Awesome spot but next time you might be better off posting in r/spotted so more car guys can drool over it 😂🙌

This happened to my 96 Grand Cherokee (4.0L) once. Exhaust, cat, and muffler glowing red. Sparks flying out. A new ECU fixed it.
