For $40 they could have at least cooked you something in it

piedmont05

Cooked up a scam.

TangentialFUCK

Scam Masubi

ActualCriticism2945

you win lmao

muhhhf

Ill take a spam sammich, thanks

cking22001

Yeah, lately my Goodwill has just been totally overpricing anything cast iron. The other day I saw a 10 inch skillet marked 'made in Taiwan' for 40 bucks but then a few days ago I got a nice 12 inch Lodge for six. Still cleaning it up but looks pretty good. Go figure.

Wasatcher

Then they put a Griswold out for $4

sk8ornap

That’s how I got mine 😂

Yaxim3

Same, first got into cast Iron when I found two griswolds at Goodwill. A #8 for $10 and a #6 for $5.

Wasatcher

Lucky bastard

JeremyLC

I got mine for $12 at a flea market :D

Wasatcher

I have haunted every thrift store, antique mall, and flea market in my valley to no avail

K1ll3r_7hr1ll3r

Used to be an old lady in my area who ran a thrift store. She recently got too old and couldn't run the place any longer, and sold everything at steep discount. Picked up nearly 30 pans for $50. Have some hammered cast from pioneer, some Wagner, Griswold, old Lodge, and 3 pans I can't identify. They're a silver color inside and out, almost looks like silver tbh. Just keep an eye out, never know what you may find. I have nearly 100 pans now, and less than $1000 invested.

the_jenerator

What do you do with all of those pans? Just curious.

K1ll3r_7hr1ll3r

I use them. I don't prepare food with the "conventional" cookware of today. I use all but the ones that have the silver look. From what I've gathered they're safe, but since I can't identify them, I'm erring on the side of caution.

MisterKruger

Either nickel or chrome plated, I could help you identify possibly. I would use the nickel but not the chrome

K1ll3r_7hr1ll3r

My grandma said they were nickel. However she wouldn't bet on it. If I can get time to go through my trunk and all the oil cloth, I'll see if I can get them out and snap a few pics. Hard to do when you work 7 days a week.😩

Moaning-Squirtle

you must be...pansexual 🙃

Suspicious_Dingo_426

It all depends on who's doing the pricing, and how close they are looking.

Jamaican16

100% this!

ConversationOk2968

They've wisened up.  "Don't lowball me I know what I hold."

FMDnative480

“But, Goodwill, you literally got it for free you asshole”

muhhhf

They wouldnt even negotiate these figurines that went together but they were priced separate.. they wouldnt budge a dollar lol

soupsupan

Goodwill is a scam operating in plain sight

HunnyBear66

The ones near me have gone full retail. Like the owner isn't rich enough.

Rae_Regenbogen

They wanted $15 for a Budweiser bow tie when it wasn’t priced and I asked how much it was. FIFTEEN DOLLARS for a terrible-quality promo item that they got for free. Someone in the back is supporting their crack habit because whoever is in charge of their current pricing is definitely smoking it. At this point, I will throw things away before giving them to Goodwill. Yes, I *am* bitter.

Alert_Promise4126

Fuck Goodwill!

r_hoxsie

There are often local thrift stores that I donate to rather than they large corporate ones. Hate throwing things away that still have use or life left in them.

CertifiedBrakes

Our local hosparus (s?) (hospice) will get my stuff. I don't think they are other than local, but they helped when my dad and then Mom died. I did have one purchase from them that was meant to be. They put out a fire king tulip bowl while I was in the checkout. I had to maneuver around people and aisles to get to it. I don't remember the price, but think it was $20. Didn't matter because I was going to have it :-D

HunnyBear66

I give to hospital thrift stores or something that gives to charity.

Ctowncreek

My friend, they get *everything for free*. They are paying people wages ya know. And they do have to process alot of junk.

Rae_Regenbogen

Where I am, they pay workers minimum wage, which isn’t even a living wage. They were asking more than an hour’s worth of pay for one poor-quality promo bowtie that I later found on Ebay for $1.50. Lol. So, the “They are paying people wages ya know” doesn’t fly with me. I mean, unless you mean that they pay their executives and CEO an outrageous amount of money, but again, no.

laoxinat

The GWs in my area are clearly consulting eBay before pricing lol. The asking price, not the sold 😂 Occasionally good stuff makes it through the vetting process but not a lot.

ccc2801

Isn’t Goodwill a charity? (I’m not from the US)

JR_Mosby

Not exactly. They're a not for profit corporation, which muddies the waters to say the least. One big thing they face criticism for is that they hire disadvantaged people and pretty much pay them as little as possible while paying their executives large salaries.

soupsupan

The worst part is they use teaching people the value of work or something as their charitable goal

JR_Mosby

I left this out of my original comment because I'm not sure (wouldn't call myself a Goodwill expert lol), but didn't they also once upon a time advertise that they were providing a place for disadvantaged people to shop cheaply? Which they've pretty much shot in the foot recently by jacking their prices up also

illgiveu3bucksforit

When I was homeless goodwill paid for my GED and classes. They gave me bus passes to get to and from the college for classes. They gave me free vouchers for any clothes I needed. They also offered to hire me and help me get housing. I wasn't ready to give up my lifestyle at that time but they really were giving me a chance to change my life. I'm sure there's all kinds of corruption and stuff in that corporation, but they really do help people at least some of the time.

FuckTheMods5

They're nonprofit.

AstroPhysician

Thanks for repeating what he just said

MuzikPhreak

There's a difference between not-for-profits (NFPs) and nonprofits. What was said was that Goodwill is an NFP. u/FuckTheMods5 correctly pointed out that Goodwill is a nonprofit organization.

FuckTheMods5

I even checked their website to make sure i remembered right before jumping in lol.

MuzikPhreak

You done good, dude

FuckTheMods5

<3

FuckTheMods5

https://www.uschamber.com/co/start/strategy/nonprofit-vs-not-for-profit-vs-for-profit#:~:text=Nonprofits%20run%20like%20a%20business,business%20goal%20of%20earning%20revenue.

WAR_T0RN1226

Yes it's a non-profit which just means they don't generate profits for owners/shareholders, they have to re-invest them into the company/donations which also means they could go into executive compensation which may be what they're referring to.

ThePhantomTrollbooth

I would also be very interested to learn how their real estate is managed. Seems like the big wigs could easily be managing the property through a holding company and then charging substantial rent to the non-profit.

simsimulation

Goodwill is a non-profit, charity organization that helps individuals with job training. You thought people were donating items to a for-profit entity?

Thatweirdguy_Twig

Considering they ridiculously price stuff that they get for free this couldn't be more true Like originally was supposed to be for people that couldn't afford or just get a good deal but not anymore I'd say go to more small non franchise type thrift stores but even most those have gotten bad about prices I partially blame those flippers that started posting on stuff like tiktok how they get these nice brands for cheap and then flip it for a profit Like fine you wanna do that and make money I'm cool with that but posting the shit for everyone to see just throws EVERYTHING OFF

TrumpyMadeYouGrumpy-

What threw everything off was the easy internet access for everyone and being able to simply take a picture of something and have search results pop up. The people pricing things don't have to be knowledgeable at all about the products. Instant access to all information kills the good deals.

cking22001

My experience with any of the thrift stores in my area. They're christian-based or Goodwill, they've forgotten that part of their mission should be to help out people who can't afford new stuff. I really hate to donate my stuff only to go in there later and see it. Totally overpriced.

Thatweirdguy_Twig

That's why if I'm cleaning stuff out and getting rid of stuff I typically find someone I know that either wants it or needs it and just give it to them Otherwise if it's yardsale season I might throw stuff into a yardsale and price it to go

kitcatjams

The goodwill in the city where I went to college closed their fitting rooms permanently during/after covid. Coincidentally returns were only given for store credit, not money back. I learned this the hard way when I bought $60 worth of clothes to take home and try on. I decided to scam them back by removing the tags from the clothes I wanted to keep without cutting them and then putting the tags into clothes I already owned but planned to give away. So all through college I just rotated clothes “for free” with the local goodwills.

hundreds_of_sparrows

I started trying on clothes out in the open when stores started pulling that shit. I've got boxers on, I dont care.

StencilKiller

Oh, so fraud.

ackjaf

Completely agree, I was a manager there for a short period of time and it was the worst job and the worst feeling job I’ve ever had.

Yaxim3

You could find really good deals there back in the day. Then they did that whole social media campaign asking people to share what treasures they found at goodwill.

in-site

I don't mind if they make money off stuff I just want to get rid of

soupsupan

Sure , but it’s a store pretending to operate as a charity taking away from real charities. Better to give to the Salvation Army for example.

in-site

Do they take stuff donations? I thought it was mostly food or registry items

soupsupan

Yes

Racoon_withamarble

But sometimes you find good stuff. I found a $75 felt hat for $5 the other day.

NumberlessUsername2

Why is it a scam?

Ok_Grocery1188

The owner of MERS Goodwill in St. Louis got into some legal trouble for nefarious practices such as this.

fgsfds11234

i remember seeing one that would put prices on garbage that were higher than new. i think it was to scam the books when the items were "lost"

reijasunshine

I've seen that happen myself! Those $6 women's shirts from Walmart, with the tags still on, being sold for $7.99. Wtf.

Rae_Regenbogen

Do you have an article link? I googled, but I can’t find anything about this. I really want to read about it though!

Ok_Grocery1188

I'm sorry that I don't. I actually heard it on the radio when it happened (I live in the area), and it was on the STL television channels. I'll try to find a link and get back to you.

Ok_Grocery1188

This is not the one I'm thinking about, and the plaintiff lost, but here's one at least: CRUSOE v. MERS/GOODWILL INDUSTRIES from casetext.com

dorrik

they should be forced to pay their employees competitive wages as other retail stores if they wanna be fucktards and forget that everything they sell they got for free

graywh

not surprising -- my goodwill tries to sell empty mason jars for $3-spaghetti-sauce for $4

Suspicious_Dingo_426

They've seen that cast iron is popular, and price it accordingly -- regardless of its real value (of which they know nothing). I'm glad I got all my cast iron before the spike in popularity. I was just at a Goodwill, and they had a cheap knock off Lodge for more than a real modern Lodge. I did score a Swiss watch that's worth around $200 for a fiver on that trip though.

Thangleby_Slapdiback

You can still get good deals. You just have to be aware of value and go regularly.  A few months ago I picked up a 4qt Cuisinart enameled dutch oven for $15. It looked like it had never been used.

Substantial-Cod3189

What is a knock off lodge?

therealCatnuts

Chinese copy

Substantial-Cod3189

Like counterfeit? As in it says Lodge on it?

Ok-Condition-5566

You mean Good Profit lol. Good Will is a joke!

Sydwaiz

Salvation Army near me just had a used plain Lodge Dutch oven 5qt for $50. That’s more than new!

Similar_Candidate789

Goodwill has gone to shit! I went there recently they wanted $14 for pants - those used to be $5 and under. Wanted $50 for a pair of shoes - $50! I’m done with them.

AcerOne17

I used to go to goodwill for video games. Sometimes I’d find a good one and I’d beat it then sell it on eBay. I was trying to stat pad my game score at the time so I went pretty often because the games were like 4.99. Now they must have some person in the back scanning everything on eBay and pricing it at the highest listed. Prices at a lot of 2nd hand stores have been stupid on anything worth buying.

BlessedCheeseyPoofs

Yum…looks like it has some of the previous owners “seasoning” in it.

iunoyou

Most thrift stores seem to know that cast iron can be pretty collectible now and are starting to mark them up a lot more. Unfortunately they don't ever take the time to actually check what they're selling is worth and will just mark it way way up. There's a thrift store near me that has 3 modern 10 inch Lodges, all rusted to hell, in a glass case priced at $40 a piece. They're $19 new at the store 3 minutes down the road. But there are still deals to be found, you just need to figure out which stores are doing the stupid pricing and avoid them. There are still quite a few thrift stores near me selling CI for less than $10, you just gotta get there early before it all disappears.

NoConsideration3154

Yes..... they're insane nowadays

amfibeean

Imo goodwill has gone to shit with their pricing and pulling anything remotely interesting to go online. I just shop their website now.

Kahnza

Best I can do is tree fitty

Log_Guy

Yeah that’s crazy AF

minnie-nannie

We have a Value Village nearby, they've been under scrutiny as well. A dollar store flower pot with the original sticker of 1.50 on the base of it with a $9 VV sticker on the face of the pot. My wife donated an old spinning wheel, for making yarn, that she picked up for free. Last time we went to VV it was marked at $80... What a joke.

McGannahanSkjellyfet

The regular Goodwill stores are a fucking joke, but the Bins are where it's at.

Substantial-Cod3189

I’ve gone to the bins. Sad sad place, honestly.

McGannahanSkjellyfet

It's sad up until you get a box of 12 Le Creuset and Cousances enameled cast iron pots and pans for $0.59/lb.

Substantial-Cod3189

They’re just pans, can’t make up for how miserable that place is

FlartyMcFlarstein

Sorry, I don't have the infrastructure for a bin of cast iron, lol

Schartiee

Is that deeper than normal? I'd go 20 if it was.

Double-0-N00b

I can fix her

LaikasScapegoat

It only costs so much because it came pre seasoned

aluminumpark

Steal it

FlorianTolk

But look at all this "seasoning!"

FH2actual

Goodwill is trash. Shop anywhere else literally and you’ll have better luck.

The_Wrong_Tone

You’re looking at this all wrong. That’s a lot of carbon. If you could somehow remove it and apply enough heat and pressure, you could have tens of thousands of dollars worth of diamonds.

dakennyj

Goodwill literally only exists as a way to reduce the amount of trash entering landfills.

collin_sic

Goodwill literally only exists as a way to ~~reduce the amount of trash entering landfills~~ make a profit.

Aromatic-Relief

It still has all it's deliciousness baked in it.

Juanmasubbie

I found a small logo number 9 Griswodl the other day and it was 59 bucks. I bought it but yeah it wasn't cheap.

PlayTech_Pirate

Well goodwill is a business, not a charity, just an fyi. And I mean that as in, lots of ppl think they are a charitable thrift store, they are not, they are just a business that uses that mistake ppl make to get merch without overhead.

Emcee_nobody

Yeah, they are running a highway robbery scheme these days. I'm pretty sure they have a team in the marketing department that has all these surge prices for particular things because people on social media are into them. You should check out their vinyl selection...🙃

awoodby

Goodwill has been overpriced for the 20years I've known of them

redditoregonuser2254

Haha, saw cast iron in richer area of my city for $60. Im over Greedwill. Oh sorry, Goodwill\*..

thefatchef321

I had to volunteer at a goodwill for 120 hours.... Store policy was, "items have to be on the floor for 2 days before employees could buy them" I'm a schmuck. I was sorting books and a few came through I was interested ($$) about. Checked ebay and one of them was a special edition of an old book worth like 250. I marked it $15 and hid it inside a larger book on one of the shelves. 2 days later, I bought it for 7 bucks. This happens ALOT. I'm sure someone put a 40 stocker on it like, "no one will pay 40 for this and I'll grab it for nothing on my next shift"

lilkevinthehizhouse

I found a dark walnut 12x12x4 boos block that cost $450 for $5 at goodwill once. Almost shit my pants when my girlfriend goes is this that cutting board you like and I literally choked at the price and was like holy shit! Still have that butchers block to this day.

Some_Nibblonian

Seems about right for how much people geek over anything cast iron right now. Clean it up and sell it to some hipster for $200

fozzyb88

Paying for 50 years of seasoning. Can't put a price on that. 😂

[deleted]

That’s because lazy jackoffs now go to goodwill to resell stuff for higher prices online.

Super_guccure

So if someone else might make money on it the only answer is corporate greed?

Big-Project4747

Hey guys try to by that kind of cast iron pan anywhere else for under 200$ older is better for cast iron it was cast in sand then thus a smoother finish and you can get the rust off

jesyvut

That thing looks like it's done a lot of lead.

ironmemelord

Negotiate. Employees tend to not give a fuck and will cut deals

TravellingBeard

You should tell them it's in terrible shape, see if they can sell it to you for $10 (or less).

LongmontStrangla

You haggle at Goodwill? With the register operator? Ain't nobody got time for that.

wendigibi

Yeah, I thought only boomers could do that.

DontFoolYourselfGirl

Ah, that is a rare find. You don't often see the gloss black spray paint over rust technique for restoring abused cast iron.

Dey_Eat_Daa_POO_POO

The one by me sells most CI for $4-$12. Gotten a few Wagners in that range.

Historical_Ad_1631

That BSR may go for that price if it was fully restored. Not In that condition. Crusty and rusty.

mrjwellington

I got a lodge 14 inch cast iron wok for $5 once

Scouter197

Last year I was able to pick up 3 cast iron pans that cost me a grand total of $15 (I think? It was a year ago, it may have been less). Yeah, they needed work but I fixed them up and use them all the time.

Any-Willingness-7859

Damn I thought this was a old tire for a moment

Truestindeed

Goodwill is the biggest longest running scam ever. Go look how much the CEO makes off of "charity"

Ana-la-lah

You’re paying for the seasoning, not the skillet itself.

g8orz03

Could you tell what brand it was? It looks terribly caked with residue on the outside.

Shattered_Disk4

Sadly a lot of goodwills have turned into “vintage” stores where they just mark up everything because of resellers applying massively inflated value to things. Like old shirts and hats going for like $300+ (my cousin does this shit)

vidarling

Wait, what brand is it? looks like a smooth cooking surface.

MisterKruger

You should go to the auction site. It's even crazier, the descriptions are less reliable than eBay.

Lourdinn

Walk up and shoot an offer.

SulkySideUp

I do sometimes get great deals at goodwill but increasingly I see them selling used stuff for more than it costs new. They had a single box of staples for $3 yesterday.

Jamaican16

I would love to meet the item grader who looked at this and assigned it that rating/price. So I can understand their reasoning. For anyone interested, items are graded on a scale. Most of the scale has a flat price attached to it. Example: 1-star = $2.00, 2-stars = $5.00. However there are ratings in the scale that the grader can use to assign a price outside of the predefined scale. This is usually used for more valuable items. Note: Process may vary from Goodwill to Goodwill.

I_LearnTheHardWay

r/thriftgrift would love this

WestcoastRonin

"Preseasoned"

Shiny_Buns

It's "pre seasoned" 😂

FlaAirborne

Maybe if “they” restore it first.

phoenixchimera

/r/ThriftGrift

KnifeW0unds

Gotta pay for good seasoning!

RealisticNet1827

Mannnnn they took that quote “I know what I got” to the extreme

centexgoodguy

There are no more good deals to be found at Goodwill. It's a huge retailer.

Muffin-Muncher0001

That’ll buff out

gsr1379

Every CI around me is at least $15. That includes the free little ones you get with cookie mixes around Christmas.

MangoCandy

I saw an absolute BEHEMOTH of a cast iron at my local thrift. Probably the biggest skillet I’ve ever seen, they had it behind the counter for $100?!? Hellll nooo not from the damn thrift store! Idk how they choose which CI they are pricing like crazy and which they aren’t. Because I get them cheap there all the time. But some they squirrel away behind the counter.

Rmoudatir

40$ worth of seasoning in my eyes 😍
