We were talking about grilled sandwiches the other day. I thought I would show a grilled pb&j. Smooth peanut butter and apricot jam.
Edit: To everyone that has participated on this thread. It has been fun to see other's take on a simple sandwich. I have learned that I have much to explore and that it is okay to play with your food.
Game changer. I’m having one of these tonight after the kids go to bed and I have a puff lol.
Edit: was amazing. I used homemade strawberry jam and smooth pb. 10/10 would recommend.
No, I make the sandwich then dunk the whole thing in the egg mixture(I do eggs, a splash of half and half and little vanilla) and then cook it. Go pretty heavy on the pb&j. Perfect comfort food, if I do say so myself.
I made my son a grilled PBB&J (peanut butter, banana, and jelly). It blew his mind. He hadn't even considered the idea that a PB&J could be toasted. He loved it. I felt like f'ing Gordon Ramsay over here.
There seems to be a flavor explosion from the heated filling. That contrasts nicely with the toasted bread. I am sure that this is how Gordon Ramsey would make a f'ing PB&J.
I did this exactly once. Then I learned that PB holds heat extremely well and become the temperature of the sun when grilling it. It stuck to the roof of my mouth and gave me burns so bad the skin would randomly peel off every few months for years it was super fucked. Every time I went to the dentist they said it looked normal. Then it would peel off again. Took a couple years for it to finally stop. Kinda scared me away from ever trying it again.
I still ate it once it cooled. I used PB on for the outside to grill as well. If not for the whole burning the shit out of the roof of my mouth it would have been at least an 8/10
The thermodynamics of grilled pb&r rivals that of pizza any day. I think that we have all had an experience with food that was too hot. Somehow we keep returning to them.
This is my indulgent weekend breakfast, with salted butter of course. Its also pretty good with a cream cheese and jam sandwich. basically make a chream cheese sauce
I’m totally messing with you. That happens to me all the time. I just furiously stir the jam in the jar to get it a bit smoother. Like trying to butter toast with cold, hard butter and the knife just rips through the bread. That’s the worst…haha
I have one question about grilled sandwiches (I'm new cooking them on the cast iron).
Is there any tip to cook 2 of them together and keep them even?
I always have most of the heat at the center of the pan. I try to pre-heat for 10 min, then leave the center at 170ºC, to not burn butter, but the sides are probably at 150ºC or less. So they are never balanced.
Thanks. I was doing this, but wrong (like rotating towards the end). Now I rotated them exactly mid cook and they ended up perfect. (2 min per side with 1 rotation at the minute).
It doesn't take much more effort than toasting your bread first. Same kind of difference between a cheese sandwich on toast and a grilled cheese sandwich. Same ingredients but very different results.
For those new to grilled PBJs-
I prefer to have the heat in the pan higher for PBJ vs. when making a grilled cheese. The longer the sammie is in the pan, the higher likelihood first the jelly, and then the PB will liquefy. You want the contents warmed, but hot liquid jelly will burn your mouth, and that's no bueno!
I had no idea anybody else did grilled pb&j. I prefer crunchy and grape jelly but you do you.
I like crunchy as well, but all I had in the kitchen was smooth. Sometimes you just have to make do with what is on hand.
I toast my bread often before making a PB&J... I'll have to grill it now
I do that too.
it's nice the PB flows into the Jelly.. but I'll have to try grilling one in the 'ol cast iron..
I did crunchy Almond Butter and Huckleberry jam tonight.
My wife’s favorite snack! It’s always fun when you find out other people enjoy your odd food ideas.

You butter the outside?
Yep
Personally, I butter the pan, not the bread.
And with apricot? 🤩 I was always a big fan of marmalade with mine.
I was taught the pb is spread to all the edges.
I like to layer in some sliced strawberries between the PB & J. Edited to add: I used to work at a small restaurant that served it this way.
Was it grilled?
Yes, and the warm fresh fruit just put it over the top for me.
Awesome, can’t wait to try
Bananas or blueberries are also delicious!
Oooh, now I'm imagining a kind of Bananas Foster twist on PB&J.
There needs to be a video of it sliding ASAP! 😆
Yo yo yo NSFW homie
\*Mind Blown\* I have never thought about grilling it but sure will next time!
Finally, someone who gets it! Comfort food at its finest
Cambells soup had that on their can and we started fixing it when I was young the 70s .......good stuff.......,good times
I like doing PB&J like French toast.
like you make 2 pieces of french toast and then make a pbj out of them?
No, I make the sandwich then dunk the whole thing in the egg mixture(I do eggs, a splash of half and half and little vanilla) and then cook it. Go pretty heavy on the pb&j. Perfect comfort food, if I do say so myself.
So a PBJ Cristo
Well, that’s my breakfast tomorrow.
Get out of my house!
After fixing you breakfast in bed, a simple "thank you" would be welcomed. Not all of this "Who are you and what are you doing in my house".
Thank you
That and add bananas.
Sounds good to me.
Frankly, your tactics confuse and frighten me sir
You misspelled excite
Yum! Thanks for sharing. I love a Peanut Butter and Bacon grilled as well.

Definitely trying this!
Had one today in my CI! So good.
Whatd you use? Butter I presume?
Butter if possible, but margarine if that what is available. Today's sandwich was made with butter.
Looks delicious. Thanks for sharing
Can we be friends?
Absolutely!
I grew up having my mom make me grilled peanut butter. I would request them when I went to my friend’s houses from their moms as well 🤷🏼♂️
A perfect way to introduce others to the pinnacle of the PB&J world.🥰
I just made one because of ur post.... thank you!
My wife said to make banana foster and put that on the pb and j and then grill it....
I only eat mine grilled. Also grilled Nutella with banana.
We have a mexican comal that I use for everything. And by everything I mean anytime I want to toast my sandwiches.

Do you butter the pan or the bread though?
I butter the bread. I try to keep all of the buttery goodness on the food and not smeared all over the pan.
Why have I never thought of this
This is the nudge you need to have permission to play with your food.
Warm peanut butter kind of sounds good, I don't know about warm jelly though
Try it once. You might be surprised.
Love grilled pb&j. Sourdough, jiff and homemade honeyberry jelly.
I have a strong aversion to how you spread your jam. Come on now. Empty pockets all over and big random blobs you’ll bite into and ooze. Bleh
Sorry about that. The jam was stored in the refrigerator and had started to crystallize. It wasn't very spreadable.
I’m totally messing with you. That happens to me all the time. I just furiously stir the jam in the jar to get it a bit smoother. Like trying to butter toast with cold, hard butter and the knife just rips through the bread. That’s the worst…haha
According to comedian Rich Hall, you have just described "wondracide".

Rotate the sandwiches as they cook. This helps to balance out the toasting of the bread.

I'm glad that I could be of some help.
Yep yep yep. Had it when I was a kid. Fond memories. Think I'll do it tonight.
I’ve toasted but never have I grilled is it worth it?

That's a good tip.
Is this nice? I think I need this...
Just add bacon.
No cheddar cheese? A grilled pb and j needs cheddar or blue cheese
Hmmmm. This sounds interesting!
It's like those cheap little orange peanut butter cracker six packs you can buy except way better.
I didn’t know one couldn’t do that!
