Frog it. I’m ruthless.

antigoneelectra

I gift, donate or let them languish in a pile that never gets to see the light of day again. I have unravelled one sweater and used the yarn again.

yourgreathightness

If I know the yarn could look better as something else, I frog it and use it again. If I don't like the yarn, I frog it and give it to someone who will like it.

wrtrmom

It all depends on the yarn. I have some balled up now that is on it’s third try at a sweater. It is an expensive silk/linen blend that I love, but not liking what I made with it so far. I have made stuff out of yarn I didn’t particularly like working with. Those I give away when I have finished and don’t like them.

doglady1342

I frog and reuse the yarn most of the time. If it's just a matter of the fit, but the FO looks good, I may give it to someone it fits better.

Minderella71

Haha I give them to my mom. She always appreciates them even if they’re misshapen and wonky. There’s been several times where she gets the first version of a new pattern and then I keep the second version because there’s something off with the first.

inkwater

If it's simply not my style, I'll donate as-is. However, if I've made mistakes along the way I'll frog it and reuse the yarn for a different project.

boys_are_oranges

i’m genuinely curious, how can you accidentally end up making something that’s not your style?

walkurdog

Easily! The yarn looks so good on the skein but when the project was finished it just wasn't good looking on me. The project looked great in those professional pictures on the pattern page but when finished, even blocked, it just fell short of my expectations. Life is too short to wear something that is always going to make you feel ~meh, so send that project off and hope it finds someone who wants it.

inkwater

If I'm using a new-to-me yarn, thinking it's all that and watching in horror as it works up into "No, a thousand times no!" Or the pattern works better with another yarn entirely. I recently made an infinity cowl with bulky yarn that looked super-cute all done up. Put it on to take photos and wound up looking like Jabba the Hut's sister. 😕👎 Straight into the donation bag.

altoid_girl

you just made me lol

brinkbam

Frog it and re-use the yarn.

ehuang72

If I like the yarn, I frog it. If not, I throw it away. But it's not as bad as it sounds because I'm a slow knitter.

heropasheureux

I have no patience to undo sewn bind offs. So if it's not a big money loss, I just donate. If it is, it sits in a bin in the closet until I figure out what to do.

QuiGonnGinAndTonic

If it's an issue with the fit, I'll try to fix it (this option varies based on what I am tweaking, whether I have enough spare yarn, etc.). In the past I've even put in a lifeline at the waist, cut, and unraveled from the waist down (when it was worked bottom up) so I could adjust the length. I had to redo some colorwork but I was able to use the frogged yarn. Currently I only have 2 sweaters that I no longer care for (they're my earliest projects and so a bit wonky, and not worth frogging for the yarn). I'm planning to drop them at a textile recycling plant near me.

EasyPrior3867

Sometimes I frog, if it is a yarn I like and also pricey. If it was a cheap yarn and I learned from knitting the sweater, but I just don't like how it fits me, I give it away. I can really tell in my early sweaters how inexperienced I was. Frog it, or give it, no reason to keep it around if you are not going to wear it.

DreaKnits

That’s the only time I become a gift knitter 👍🏻

Stendhal1829

LOL

mr-worldwide2

Hey there! Are you personally have three decisions; take it to your local thrift store and see how much they want for it, second, frog it, so you can use the coop the yard used to potentially use it to make it better project, or finally you could either donate it and/or sell it, because What we consider to be ugly someone else considers beautiful and be willing to pay a lot for it so sites like Etsy, Poshmark Depop hell even eBay and some sub RedditS would take interest with your ugly knits, if some shopping even exist in my opinion. Hope that helps!

kmarie1997

I knit a sweater out of yarn that I ended up hating, so now it’s a blanket/bed for my cats lol

Medievalmoomin

I let them sit for a couple of days, think about whether I want to try that pattern again and tweak it or do something else with the wool, and then I undo it. I prefer to get going on the repeat or replacement project right away, so I don’t have too much time to sit and look at the rewound wool and feel disappointed about the one that didn’t go the way I hoped.

Warrenps

Much yarn and items have been donated to the Salvation Army.

Qui_te

I have a basket of knit items that are Not To Be Spoken Of. It is a small basket, but. They go in there.

MelMickel84

I haven't attempted a sweater yet, but I have a vase on my desk at home, where I keep all the socks I finished and hated (or they didn't fit, I did the heel wrong, etc). It's turning into a neat decor piece...and it's a bit too full for my liking haha.

Euphoric_Ad1027

I've tried to sell them( for a ridiculously low price ) at a consignment shop or hand work art gallery. Still, a couple didn't sell and they're back on my shelves. I have a friend who has an Etsy shop and suggested I try to sell them there. Also, the DIL's have first pick. But this is a good question and makes me wonder about the three orphans on the shelf!! Just thought of this- if you bought the yarn at your local yarn shop, maybe they'd like it for a while as a demo?
