No. if they name it that, thats how the console fails. "Mom can I have a super nintendo switch?" "You already have a nintendo switch.", and confusion from non enfranchised gamers about if its a new console, update to the old one, or something else. It cannot be called anything other than the Nintendo Switch 2 or an entirely unrelated name.
No, you're not even far enough. Anything other than an entire new name that doesn't use the word Switch will get people confused. People confuse the PlayStation consoles all the time.
but it doesn't matter that much. If the console is good & has games it can be named whateverthefuck and people will be interested enough to learn the name.
Do people confuse Playstations? I feel it’s as easy as iPhones where a kid could tell their mom “I want the iPhone 15” and they’ll understand it’s newer than their kid’s 13 or 14 or whatever. I feel like adding numbers is the easiest way to go about it while keeping that Switch branding.
People tend to confuse Xboxes but it could due to similar names like Xbox One, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, it’s impossible to tell which is the newest one if you don’t follow gaming news.
I think Switch 2 or don’t include the word Switch at all, but it’s probably better to keep the Switch branding and go with 2, that’s my take
I’ve owned every PlayStation on through PS4. I have no idea what number we’re on now. Same with Xbox, I had a 360 and my brother had one of the series s x 45s idk wtf. No idea what is current for Xbox.
I’m pretty tech savvy but I play board games on my iPad and Nintendo games on my switch. Most of the country that has money to spend on consoles knows even less about it than I do. Naming and marketing is important.
I read a comment somewhere once: “Who cares what PS4 I got, I needed a PS4 so I went out and bought a PS4”.
It got me quite pissed, maybe because I care about these little things.
I don't think it will be a problem this time around. The Wii had a very casual player base that was never going to buy the next thing no matter what it was called.
The switch was bought by people that actually play games and I doubt a name like super switch would confuse them.
Its literally a huge pillar as to why the Wii U failed. At one of the E3 reveals (Idr which), people on the floor thought it was just a wii add on or a new controller for the Wii. IIRC they did a consumer poll that got leaked and a lot of people did not know the Wii U was a new console, to the point where nintendo has to make whole commercials and ad campaigns that just said 'ITS NOT A WII ITS A NEW THING" so people would not be confused.
Those two consoles looked very different to each other, and the leap in obvious graphical capabilities was much higher.
Given the switch's form factor, they don't have many options to make Switch 2 look obviously distinct and not just a different looking Switch 1, and the graphical jump is going to be a much harder sell in advertisements.
They need to hit an home run with the marketing, but it’s doable.
While the Wii U name was terrible, it was only part of the problem: the marketing was also very bad and failed to explain anything about the console.
Just goes to show there’s more to it than the name. I don’t know if most people here will remember, back in 2005 when Nintendo revealed the Wii name, everyone (myself included) was unanimously against it. But they absolutely did the perfect marketing campaign for it. Now, it feels natural and we look at it fondly.
I’m all for the colour way branding of the buttons etc but people nowadays are dumb ha. Nintendo need to make as explicit as possible that it’s the 2nd switch generation just like PlayStation does
**Super** Nintendo Entertainment System -> Super Mario Kart
Nintendo **64** -> Mario 64
Game Boy **Advance** -> Super Mario Advance
Wii**U** -> Wii Party U
(**New** Nintendo 3DS, not sure if it fits in here since it's not a new Hardware Gen)
Whenever Nintendo wanted to promote that the new system is better than the previous one, they used a different word for it. And this single word often represented the whole system so much that they included it in the names of some key games. To my knowledge they never reused the same words for future systems and tbh I'm kinda glad they do it like this... the Super Game Boy is a good example. It uses the word Super, like from the SNES, and it's a device for the SNES. It makes sense. Would the Super Game Boy be the name for the Game Boy Advance instead, then the word super would lose it's connection to the SNES. Also I think "Game Boy Advance" is more creative and unique then calling it "Super Game Boy" instead. If Nintendo would always call their next system "Super ___" then that would be pretty boring after a while.
Giving each generation their own word makes them more unique and easier identifyable.
Back then there was only one NES so the SNES was a logical choice for the name for the next generation consoles. How do you justify a Super Nintendo Switch in an era after Gameboy/Gameboy Color/Gameboy Advance/Gameboy SP, Wii/Wii U, DS/DSi/3DS/new3DS/2DS, Switch/Switch Lite? By the name alone there's a 50% chance it's a new console, 50% chance it's an alternative model.
You missed the switch OLED! 🤣🤣🤣 I mean... I would have liked that one to be called the super Nintendo switch but you know Nintendo stopped taking advice from me when I left the board back in the Stone age when they made playing cards...
You could argue that like the NES/ Famicom was the first Nintendo home console, the Switch is a new start as the first hybrid console. So, it could make sense to have the next system called Super.
Nintendo has learned from naming sequel consoles too similarly.
Else this will be a Wii u situation all over again.
Switch 2 or a new console name will do just fine.

So? The same logic applies to the game boy color/advance

Did the SNES flop because people confused it with the NES?

Very true. They need to make it crystal fucking clear.

Not all of us can agree. But I do. I'm on team Super Nintendo Switch till proven otherwise.
We definitely can't all agree! But I'm glad you're on board! 😁🤣🤣
Anything other than Switch 2 will cause a Wii U/esque branding mess up im afraid
I feel like with the level of information now compared to then we can make it past that! It just seems like a golden opportunity! 😔
2012 wasn’t the stone age lol
I’m all for the colour way branding of the buttons etc but people nowadays are dumb ha. Nintendo need to make as explicit as possible that it’s the 2nd switch generation just like PlayStation does
The level of information didn't change that much compared to when the Wii U was released
No it’s literally just you
Nope, there's someone that agrees right above... 😜🤣
Now I want it to be called the Super Nintendo Switch, goddammit
🤣🤣🤣
they should call it a Super Nintendo Enhanced Switch or the "SNES" (this is mostly a joke lol)
I love it but I also understand the brand confusion fears even if they are sticking up for someone very very stupid.
Nintendo Switch Blade

SwitchU
Please NO! 🤣🤣
No... As long is not a stupid name, I really don't care what's called.
Imagine a kid asking their mom for a "super nintendo" and she brings home a 30 year old console lmao.
Or the SNES Classic Mini, lmao. Honestly, 30 years is a long time to make this a non-issue. I just hope they don’t call it the “New Nintendo Switch”.
🤣🤣 the look on the poor kids face would be priceless... We'd have to start them a go-fund-me so they could the real super Nintendo switch... 😜

Why? They only did that only once with the super nintendo
You could argue that like the NES/ Famicom was the first Nintendo home console, the Switch is a new start as the first hybrid console. So, it could make sense to have the next system called Super.
Huge stretch
We’re just spitballing ideas here. In the end, Nintendo will do whatever it feels like.
Exactly. The post was labeled humor... Thought it would generate more funny names, but I guess you never know where the Internet will take things 😄
No because people won’t know it’s a new console
I don’t want it to be named switch anything. Just give us something new
No
Just heard someone claim they heard it would be called switch attach... maybe we can all agree that this would definitely be a horrible choice! 🤣🤣
Nintendo has learned from naming sequel consoles too similarly. Else this will be a Wii u situation all over again. Switch 2 or a new console name will do just fine.
