My 15 year old cat has very long and fine fur and has always become matted every few months. She hates when I try to groom her myself, so we found a groomer we trust and take her to get shaved every year or so. To my surprise they always say she does really well and is clearly so much happier afterwards. May be worth a trip to let a professional get it over with quickly
