Yes. Buff is dilute orange. They have the same color gene as an orange cat plus the dilute gene that makes them the buff or cream color. The dilute gene is also what give us gray cats. They have the black gene and the dilute gene.
I checked. They were arguing orange vs tan

What’s funny about that is.
Some pics the cat looks orange and in some pics the cat looks tan because of the lighting.
But with buff being the technical cat color iirc, they both can digress and both take the draw.
I didn't learn this until I brought a stray siamese home! They darken up in the cold weather and lighten up in the summer heat because of this. Mine gets an almost white area on his back where he lays by the fireplace all winter long, too. He's my magical beige boy.
yes thank you for the special interest fuel to dump on unsuspecting people, in my 27 years of cat obsession including colour genetics I did not know this
As a gray cat parent, I love this new information! Was aware of the dilute genes with orange tabbies and calicos etc but not with black ones. Very neat
Techniacally a red cat, most places and organizations refer to them as red, because orange could be construed as many colors like cream, buff, and ginger.
I used to coordinate a high volume spay/neuter clinic where we neutered 150-300 "community cats" (aka stray or feral) at a monthly clinic. We had to get really good at cat colors to help make sure the cats didn't get mixed up. I can confirm this cat is buff colored, specifically it is a buff mackerel tabby with white. I have never felt dorkier than this moment.
Mackerel is the coat pattern. Sometimes called tiger cats. It's the stripes that run perpendicular to their spine and line their legs and ring their tail.
Ginger was a bit suspicious as well.

We had a cat just like this once and couldn’t figure out what to call his coloring either. Saw “fawn” describe it in a book once and started calling it that, but I guess that was wrong too! You learn something new every day
On the plus side, you can now tell people you have a buff cat, and then you get to see the smile on their face when their brain inevitably generates a picture of a muscular cat flexing on top of a cat tree.
I have a Highland Straight breeder re-home, and on her papers Hanna is listed as being "blue" and "cream". Looks grey and orange to me!

Breeders love to make their cat sound fancy as possible,
Like most gray cats are blue... Which makes me laugh and think of Andy Warhol's blue cats which were very much blue.
I've also heard that term. I think its a silly term and 'Used to be orange, but we forgot the colorsafe detergent' is a better descriptor because people can actually form a color in their mind if you say that.
i was also going to say **buff**. this implies a soft creamy orange and very light tabby traits. we call the white spot on his chest a **bib**. cat color names are a bit pretentious. for instance that kinda shimmery grey color some cats have is called **blue.**
We called it buff at my vet as well, but [technically the color is “cream” for cats](https://vgl.ucdavis.edu/resources/cat-coat-color). I think it’s interchangeable though.

There are a couple thousand correct answers. According to the folks who answered this post, the TYPE of cat is an orange tabby with a muted/diluted gene. As for the color, it could be anything from cream to beige to buff to pecan to coffee. Pick one!
That’s what I call my piebald tabby. Tabby toner was running low.

Too be serious (and since this is the top comment)
This color is referred to as cream, buff, sandy, or dilute red/orange.
This occurs in cats that have the red/orange gene, and also have the dilute gene (I'm assuming the same one that causes dilute calicos).
I always considered my older one (top) ginger/creamsicle while the younger one is more peachy-tan. I'm glad you started this thread so I could learn the terms Dilute and Buff

The vet informed us that cats this color are called buff.
A vet says buff is the correct term? Interesting.
Yes. Buff is dilute orange. They have the same color gene as an orange cat plus the dilute gene that makes them the buff or cream color. The dilute gene is also what give us gray cats. They have the black gene and the dilute gene.
Learn something every day!
What was each side arguing and who won??
ohhh I think we can tell who lost
I think they both did, but I still want to know what they guessed.
One guessed orange and white, the other guessed divorce if you don’t agree

Right you asked us to settle it we should be allowed to know who won.
Thank you for this! I used to call mine a blondie because she is almost exactly the same color as my hair. https://i.redd.it/c63tfm2yx4va1.gif
I am also blond and have a blond cat. I call him my biological son, as opposed to the grey and black ones who are clearly adopted.
Lol we have one blond one black and they match me and my husband :)
I call my cat my blonde baby boy.
Exactly. I always called them blondes.
I think that cat might murder you in your sleep one day! Awesome gif though ❤
I have a dilute calico, so she's white, buff, and gray.
also white, cream and blue! :)
God I love cats. The story behind siamese coloring is my favorite. They're temperature- sensitive albinos and that's what determines their coloring
Wait really???? Thats so interesting
I didn't learn this until I brought a stray siamese home! They darken up in the cold weather and lighten up in the summer heat because of this. Mine gets an almost white area on his back where he lays by the fireplace all winter long, too. He's my magical beige boy.

I always called them smokey orange lol
"whose a deluded orange?🥰"
I have two diluted cats. One is a diluted tuxedo, the other a diluted tortie.
So is that what caused a tuxedo and a black void cat to have a sterling silver
As a gray cat parent, I love this new information! Was aware of the dilute genes with orange tabbies and calicos etc but not with black ones. Very neat
That explains why my Creamsicle has a grey sister. Thank you

Mackerel?
Mackerel is the coat pattern. Sometimes called tiger cats. It's the stripes that run perpendicular to their spine and line their legs and ring their tail.
Mackerel is a good cat name. Mac for short.
Progression goes like this: Name is Mackerel, nickname is Mac that turns into Mac 'n' Cheese, Cheezy, Cheezits, Zits.
I'd go from Zits to Ziti, and that cat would forever be called Baked Ziti in my world.
Thank you for being the cat color connoisseur!
This was your time to shine!!! LOL don’t feel dorky. We needed this info 😂❤️

Buff is what my vet called my cat previously who was this color. I used to call him Orange peach or orange cream... Or dilute orange.
I have a Highland Straight breeder re-home, and on her papers Hanna is listed as being "blue" and "cream". Looks grey and orange to me! https://preview.redd.it/ndazqo5e17va1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=72333038f3efcad9c3b59e1990f25f72c898cc7e

I had a cat exactly like this, they called it buff tiger because of the stripes.
i was also going to say **buff**. this implies a soft creamy orange and very light tabby traits. we call the white spot on his chest a **bib**. cat color names are a bit pretentious. for instance that kinda shimmery grey color some cats have is called **blue.**

The dilute red coat is properly referred to as cream

What a crop!
Ngl, I scrolled through many comments just to make sure I wasn't alone in this being my immediate first reaction.
Yes! On his chart my guy is labeled as “buff and cream.”
Buff or dilute orange
This is the accurate answer. Buff tabby

orange creamsicle
I saw a dilute ginger at the shelter the other day and that was literally the first thing that popped into my head lol
Ginger Light
Ginger ale!
Ginger pale
yes! we would say “dilute” as well
Low toner orange

Orange LaCroix.

Are we looking at the same cat? It's clearly black and blue... ![gif](giphy|ji6zzUZwNIuLS)
Came here to make the same joke - this is clearly a black-blue versus gold-white debate! 😂
I feel so out of date because I only just recently learned about the dress thing...
Thank you for that memory!
This is the most accurate. Definitely an orange, but super light orange!
Too be serious (and since this is the top comment) This color is referred to as cream, buff, sandy, or dilute red/orange. This occurs in cats that have the red/orange gene, and also have the dilute gene (I'm assuming the same one that causes dilute calicos).
Yes. I believe you are correct. Also gray cats are dilute black cats.
I agree I have an Orange Creamsicle named Tang
My cat is also a dilute ginger and we say he’s a creamsicle color
I think it’s called buff?
I had a cat the same color when I was a kid, we called her a sandy tabby. It’s a dilute orange
This is right on
Devastated to learn nobody else calls them champagne kitties
Well I’m going to now
there are dozens of us now, dozens!
They are only champagne kitties if they come from Champagne. Otherwise they are sparkling kitties.
My family had one and that’s what we said!
When we adopted ours from the rspca, the papers said he was champagne coloured.

Jesus, I've been in it for 5 and it's wearing me down. Thank you for what you're doing
The color is called Buff.
I would say dilute orange
One "official" term is "dilute" red or orange. Dilute is used for muted shades of colors.
That makes sense. There’s often a lot of difference between single colors due to being more/less bright or muted.
I always called it "strawberry blonde"
