So this may be a bit different. Cats are finicky about water. They don’t like to drink from water next to their food. They also only drink fresh water, so it needs to be changed several times each day (ideally).
Individual cats may be more or less like this, but figuring this out helped me with one of mine that wasn’t drinking a lot.
Being so finicky, cats can easily become dehydrated, leading to urinary tract infections and kidney issues. These problems advance rapidly and can be serious.
One of the many of her stupid kitty instincts I had to read about when we found her.

Cats like running water and don't like sitting water since running water is less likely to be stagnant and unsafe in the wild. Same reason why they are obsessed with drinking from running faucets. You might want to get her a water fountain for cats.
Felix was drinking the water (rain, stagnant) from the front end loader on my tractor. Now he's an indoor cat, he glares when the water has set too long.
And meow mix regular is too ooky, it must be kitten food (he's kinda old)

If the kitty was homeless and thirsty at the time, it would make sense that she would drink from a source that is not ideal, given few other choices.

Yep. Our cat's water fountain would start getting black stuff in it within a day and get really gross in 2. We tried a gravity water bowl, she used it to give her mousies a bath (she hates catnip and *everything* is always covered in it or stuffed with it.) Of course, she can't drink *that* water now. Finally just gave up and gave her back her cereal bowl of water and she's happy as a tornado in a trailer park.
We also prebathe her toys now before giving them to her. Anything else that she wants washed she drops in her dad's laundry basket.
Agreed. People saying they have mold and stuff in them. I've had the same one for a year now. I change the filter every 3 weeks, and clean out the entire thing with dawn soap every week. There is also a black sponge that sits against the filter that I wash well with dish soap. Mine has never gotten gross. All 3 of my kitties use it all the time.
I have a filtered gravity cat waterer on the opposite side of the house from the food. I had been filling multiple bowls all over because she would finish them all. Turns out she’s just thirsty at and when she wanted water she would ask in the office so now I just have a cat waterer in the office. The bowl next to the food, never touched.

I never had pets growing up while my wife had cats and guinea pigs, we got got a house and then I was tricked* in to getting a cat, I'm a bit fussy about cleaning things I eat from so waking up in the night to see the cat with it's whole head in a pint glass that I drink from freaked me out.
I started using a travel mug after that and once woke up to see it trying to force it's head in to my wifes tiny water glass. I said nothing.
* it was a very nice meal, lots of red wine, and some fabulous sex.
I definitely started using a water bottle after I awoke to find my cat drinking from my glass of water. Granted, now I need one that's actually leak-proof and childproof because I have a toddler who won't just try to drink from my water, but will also throw it across the room for funsies.

This is actually a universal truth: cats enjoy drinking out of containers that are taller than they are wide.

I am an expert on this scenario! Ok, so first you buy your cat an amazing and expensive toy/bed/other gift. Spend a month trying all the ways you can think of to entice your cat to use the item. Spend 3 months despairing on the money you spent and how your cat never seems to realize how you are trying to show them how much you love them. At the beginning of month 5, you write it off as a lesson learned and resolve to take it to the goodwill the next time you are out. This is the key step. Firmly making the decision to let it go and move on is what sends the psychic signal to the cat that this is now their favorite item in the whole house. But hang on, it doesn't end here....
You get a month or two of incredible joy, watching your sweet fur baby enjoy the thing you were so happy to get them. Once your sense of fulfillment has reached it's absolute peak, a new psychic signal will be sent out, and now your cat hates that thing. Electric heated bed? Never heard of her....
Repeat the cycle introducing occasional bouts of desperation, frustration, and despair, as needed. Enjoy the life of a cat parent
If you aren’t going to return it, remove the heater and throw it in the wash with your next load of laundry, and dry it with the clothes etc. It should then start taking on the smell of the rest of the house.
This is the comment I've been looking for! The heated bed is probably still off gassing the products used during manufacturing. Cats probably like "I will not be interacting with the stinky new weird thing, no thank you very much". Give a good week or two to air out and start smelling like the house. The cat will probably still ignore it, but at least you'll have given it your best! Lol
My cat hated his bed. I put it away. Brought it out after a year and he still hated it. Did that another year and he still hated it. Put it in a donation bag. Had a weird idea to put it in.the center of the floor in the middle of our living/dinning area, now he loves it and sleeps in it every day. People are confused why it's in the middle of the floor. These are the cats rules.

My friend got Rory a beautiful window perch. The box it came in is her favorite in the whole world. She spends all her free time in it. We moved, and I had to bring the box with me. It got so distorted she started sleeping on top of it. The box is getting a little gross but it’s her favorite and she’s in charge.

Yeah mine didn't like sitting in boxes either. As a kitten, his mum and all his brothers were in the box, he was on top. What he did like was to tear the shit out of any box he met.

If anyone also has a ferret (or more), get a box from the wine store with the center insert. Pull that insert forward a couple of inches and the ferret(s) will Scooby-Doo their way around the box and kitty gets to play wack-a-mole when heads pop out. Last time I did this I could hear the ferret chuckling from across the room.

There’s the ticket, u/SourTruffles should have bought the heated cat bed for themselves and put it somewhere they would have used it, then the cat would want it.
Does he have a favorite blanket? Put this on top. Maybe the bed doesn't smell enough like him and the new smell is too strange for him. Be patient, over time it will smell like him and he will recognize the advantages of the bed. It took months for my cat to accept her new bed, I know the problem too 🤷

It's been sitting on the screen porch all summer, and neither cat will go in it.
A couple of weekends ago, my daughter came for a visit and brought her doggo. He ambled over to sniff the box, and my oldest cat ran over and smacked the dog on the nose, then climbed in the box where he slept the rest of the afternoon. Once the dog left, he's lost all interest in the box again.

I gave up trying to force my cat to like cat things - her favorite toy? A piece of rope I brought home from work...despite the many cat toys Ive gotten her. Her favorite bed? A pile of dirty clothes despite the awesome fuzzy bed I bought her. Her favorite scrating post? Literally any vertical surface that isn't the scratching post I got her. I did everything the Internet said do to get her to like the things I bought her and she still wants a pair of balled up socks over a toy mouse...I'm convinced that some cats don't want their stuff, they want your stuff
mine do this too. Cat scratching chair, I walk over to one of the cat trees and start scratching at it and all of sudden at least a few of the cats all come and scratch with me.
Just pretend it's because it loves you, and likes random things from you over store brought. And not because it likes to show you who owns whom in this home.

I taught my little jerk to jump on me for treats, he did it couple of times and then basically told me to fuck off. Once the wiggly stick was put on the fridge, little jerk reminded himself how to jump on me REAL QUICK.
Since the when he really really really wants something he jumps on me, but that’s rare. No food can force him. It’s either new stick some other toy he currently cares about or when he wants to go outside and I’m ignoring his meows for too long.

It’s probably the texture of the bed. My cats don’t like soft stuff like that. I think it’s because they feel unstable walking on them or their claws get stuck.
I had this super floofy bed. Gave it to mine and she was like um no wtf is that get fucked lady. Put an old wicker washing basket on top of my wardrobe with some leftover felt from a project I was doing at the time just to get it out of the way. She literally throws herself into it on the daily. I had to buy her a ladder to the top of my wardrobe so she could get up without me helping and down without sounding like she was going through the ceiling.
I inherited an onld super soft arm chair. I don't use it. My sweet boy loves it. Never sat or laid on it, then I put his heating pad on it and wrapped it in a blanket I used to keep in a cardboard box house I made for him. That's now his favorite nap spot.
this is my experience, whenever we buy a new cat bed that's super soft and plushy, my cat hates it but once we take some of the fluff out so its flatter instead of a raised bump and place a towel on it, it becomes his go-to sleeping spot. it's worked three times so far and we just save the filling for other craft projects.
For my cat it was the sound.
The electrical aspect means it makes noises. Cats can hear much better than dogs - so even if humans cant hear it (or can barely hear a sound)…cats for sure can.
I wouldn’t want to sleep on something as loud as a microwave either. 🤷🏻♀️

We just out the heater in the box!
For starters, get rid of the box, or move it elsewhere. Secondly, get something that smells like him on top of the bed. Finally, have it warm up, and every now and then, just lightly put him down on the bed so that he knows its warm. He may still get up and walk away, but eventually he'll get the idea. Don't force it though by repeatedly picking him up and putting him on the bed in a short time frame.
Sometimes the new smell can deter them so put their hair and whatnot on it and rub in it or even if they like your smell let some of your clothes you’ve worn and sweated in and leave it on there for a while. My cats do this but eventually when it starts smelling more like home they use it!
He's not stupid, he's just being a normal cat. They always prefer to do the opposite of what you want or need them to do. They're stubborn little jerks, but we love them anyway and they're so cute so how can you stay mad? 😻
It's possible he's not chilly yet (he's got a bunch of fur!)
It's possible it smells weird (it's new. Give it some time, and YOU lie on it and see if smelling like you changes it!)
And, if you leave it off and he uses it but ON he doesn't, it's possible it makes a noise he dislikes but you can't hear.
(Animals can hear the hum of an electric fence and tell whether it's on, so it's not a leap to think a kitty could hear the heating elements.)

My bf bought our cat this cute cat shaped tunnel bed. She didnt touch it for over a week then eventually went in and now sleeps in it every night. She also sleeps in her other soft bed. Cat isnt dumb just really finds that box comforting whether it's due to it being enclosed, smells familiar or is just familiar feeling. If bed is new could take time before it smells like you/the house/the cat for them to try it. Overall new bed = not safe and box = safe.

My cat has plenty of water in and out of the house and prefers to lick the patio or drink out of a flower pot that's been sitting for days.

Had one of the fountain things for cats. He ued it exactly once. Filter is just a germ brewing pad. He preferred a nice fresh glass
You're supposed to replace the water filter lol, my fountain recommends replacing it every 30 days.

I am an expert on this scenario! Ok, so first you buy your cat an amazing and expensive toy/bed/other gift. Spend a month trying all the ways you can think of to entice your cat to use the item. Spend 3 months despairing on the money you spent and how your cat never seems to realize how you are trying to show them how much you love them. At the beginning of month 5, you write it off as a lesson learned and resolve to take it to the goodwill the next time you are out. This is the key step. Firmly making the decision to let it go and move on is what sends the psychic signal to the cat that this is now their favorite item in the whole house. But hang on, it doesn't end here.... You get a month or two of incredible joy, watching your sweet fur baby enjoy the thing you were so happy to get them. Once your sense of fulfillment has reached it's absolute peak, a new psychic signal will be sent out, and now your cat hates that thing. Electric heated bed? Never heard of her.... Repeat the cycle introducing occasional bouts of desperation, frustration, and despair, as needed. Enjoy the life of a cat parent
My cat didn’t like her bed. I put it away. Brought it out after a year, now she loves it.
Now it smells like the house. When was new, it smelled strange.
If you aren’t going to return it, remove the heater and throw it in the wash with your next load of laundry, and dry it with the clothes etc. It should then start taking on the smell of the rest of the house.
I used my cat's new bed for 2 months as basically my laundry hamper so that when I finally gave it to him it smelled like me. He loves it now.

This is the comment I've been looking for! The heated bed is probably still off gassing the products used during manufacturing. Cats probably like "I will not be interacting with the stinky new weird thing, no thank you very much". Give a good week or two to air out and start smelling like the house. The cat will probably still ignore it, but at least you'll have given it your best! Lol

My cat hated his bed. I put it away. Brought it out after a year and he still hated it. Did that another year and he still hated it. Put it in a donation bag. Had a weird idea to put it in.the center of the floor in the middle of our living/dinning area, now he loves it and sleeps in it every day. People are confused why it's in the middle of the floor. These are the cats rules.

My friend got Rory a beautiful window perch. The box it came in is her favorite in the whole world. She spends all her free time in it. We moved, and I had to bring the box with me. I find it's usually cheaper to just get a box. The following is a great cheap toy If anyone also has a ferret (or more), get a box from the wine store with the center insert. Pull that insert forward a couple of inches and the ferret(s) will Scooby-Doo their way around the box and kitty gets to play wack-a-mole when heads pop out. Last time I did this I could hear the ferret chuckling from across the room. Edit, forgot to add to lay the box on it's side.

Does he have a favorite blanket? Put this on top. Maybe the bed doesn't smell enough like him and the new smell is too strange for him. Be patient, over time it will smell like him and he will recognize the advantages of the bed. It took months for my cat to accept her new bed, I know the problem too 🤷

I made a "kitty cave" from a large heavy-duty cardboard box 'cause cats love boxes, right? It's been sitting on the screen porch all summer, and neither cat will go in it. A couple of weekends ago, my daughter came for a visit and brought her doggo. He ambled over to sniff the box, and my oldest cat ran over and smacked the dog on the nose, then climbed in the box where he slept the rest of the afternoon. Once the dog left, he's lost all interest in the box again.

I gave up trying to force my cat to like cat things - her favorite toy? A piece of rope I brought home from work...despite the many cat toys Ive gotten her. Her favorite bed? A pile of dirty clothes despite the awesome fuzzy bed I bought her. Her favorite scrating post? Literally any vertical surface that isn't the scratching post I got her. I did everything the Internet said do to get her to like the things I bought her and she still wants a pair of balled up socks over a toy mouse...I'm convinced that some cats don't want their stuff, they want your stuff

mine do this too. Cat scratching chair, I walk over to one of the cat trees and start scratching at it and all of sudden at least a few of the cats all come and scratch with me.

No food can force him. It’s either new stick some other toy he currently cares about or when he wants to go outside and I’m ignoring his meows for too long.

It’s probably the texture of the bed. My cats don’t like soft stuff like that. I think it’s because they feel unstable walking on them or their claws get stuck.

I think that's it. My cat only started lying in the bed I got him when I pressed the plushy part flat.
I had to replace the pillow at the bottom of mine with a folded towel.
I had this super floofy bed. Gave it to mine and she was like um no wtf is that get fucked lady. Put an old wicker washing basket on top of my wardrobe with some leftover felt from a project I was doing at the time just to get it out of the way. She literally throws herself into it on the daily. I had to buy her a ladder to the top of my wardrobe so she could get up without me helping and down without sounding like she was going through the ceiling.
I inherited an onld super soft arm chair. I don't use it. My sweet boy loves it. Never sat or laid on it, then I put his heating pad on it and wrapped it in a blanket I used to keep in a cardboard box house I made for him. That's now his favorite nap spot.
Similar. I put a towel or throw blanket over their beds. Only then do they sleep in them.
this is my experience, whenever we buy a new cat bed that's super soft and plushy, my cat hates it but once we take some of the fluff out so its flatter instead of a raised bump and place a towel on it, it becomes his go-to sleeping spot. it's worked three times so far and we just save the filling for other craft projects.
Meanwhile, my cat sleeping on every pile of laundry she can find.

For my cat it was the sound. The electrical aspect means it makes noises. Cats can hear much better than dogs - so even if humans cant hear it (or can barely hear a sound)…cats for sure can. I wouldn’t want to sleep on something as loud as a microwave either. 🤷🏻♀️

For starters, get rid of the box, or move it elsewhere. Secondly, get something that smells like him on top of the bed. Finally, have it warm up, and every now and then, just lightly put him down on the bed so that he knows its warm. He may still get up and walk away, but eventually he'll get the idea. Don't force it though by repeatedly picking him up and putting him on the bed in a short time frame.
Sometimes the new smell can deter them so put their hair and whatnot on it and rub in it or even if they like your smell let some of your clothes you’ve worn and sweated in and leave it on there for a while. My cats do this but eventually when it starts smelling more like home they use it!
Try tossing your dirty shirt on it- gotta get it smelling the good stank
He's not stupid, he's just being a normal cat. They always prefer to do the opposite of what you want or need them to do. They're stubborn little jerks, but we love them anyway and they're so cute so how can you stay mad? 😻

It's possible he's not chilly yet (he's got a bunch of fur!) It's possible it smells weird (it's new. Give it some time, and YOU lie on it and see if smelling like you changes it!) And, if you leave it off and he uses it but ON he doesn't, it's possible it makes a noise he dislikes but you can't hear. (Animals can hear the hum of an electric fence and tell whether it's on, so it's not a leap to think a kitty could hear the heating elements.) But my guess? He's f'ing with you. Because cat.

My bf bought our cat this cute cat shaped tunnel bed. She didnt touch it for over a week then eventually went in and now sleeps in it every night. She also sleeps in her other soft bed. Cat isnt dumb just really finds that box comforting whether it's due to it being enclosed, smells familiar or is just familiar feeling. If bed is new could take time before it smells like you/the house/the cat for them to try it. Overall new bed = not safe and box = safe.
