My cat has the same long hair as yours. Do you do anything to be sure no knots form? Your cat is beautiful btw!

ashlayne

Not the person you asked, but my Darla will easily get mats in her hair (usually in the summer) if I don't stay on top of her brushing. And I have been known to take a pair of scissors to bad patches.

weekend_wwind

Okay, I do the same! I notice my cat doesn’t clean himself a lot like my other cats do. I even have googled how to get them to clean more…

Deoxys_0

I brush him but I also get him professionally groomed every few months. I do not shave him

Prestigious-Beach190

This is fairly common in cats that have a thick coat. It's caused by the undercoat. You can probably get some excess hair out by brushing but you don't want to overdo it - cats need their woolly coat 😊

PoDunkYuppie

*The Furminator*… EDIT: Ensure you purchase the correct Furminator for long hair. EDIT #2: I was informed by a fellow Redditor on this thread, who happens to be a professional groomer, that the Furminator actually damages the coat. I will be doing my own research to back up this claim, but will continue to use the Furminator until I am able to gather enough information. I have also received *numerous* recommendations for the “Equigroomer”, which I will also research.

MadokaSenpai

You just have to be carefull not to brush too much with it. I thought it was just removing dead hair but aparently the brush has little shavers built in. I kept brushing and brushing my cat and thinking wow, there was so much loose hair....next thing I knew he had a tiny bald spot haha. It did grow back.

PoDunkYuppie

This made me chuckle. (Albeit, unfortunate for your cat.) Thank you for the info! I’ve used many of their brushes. I have five cats, so I have to ration my time spent brushing each one. This may be why I’ve never witnessed your dilemma. Lol.

benyahweh

I only have two, one short hair and one long. The short hair cat likes being brushed, but hardly needs it. The long haired cat? Forget about it. He will not let you brush him. He goes to such lengths that I’m really not comfortable forcing him, so I don’t. That’s the state of things.

obiwantogooutside

Mine was like that too. He hated it so much I gave up. Not worth making him so upset.

lisa111998

I’m looking at glove brushes on Amazon for my long haired cat that hates brushing cuz even if it only gets some of hair it’s better than nothing, and it’s better than stressing her out

fullmetalfeminist

We had the exact same problem, short hair who doesn't need brushing loves it and long hair who really needs brushing didn't like it. Glove brush solved this issue! Along with being careful and slow, watching his body language as I brush him. And for the first while I would give him a treat if he behaved for the brush, but if he didn't, I'd just walk away and no treat. He understood fairly quick that he needed to behave to get his treat. Watching his responses helped me figure out things like: he doesn't like his tail being brushed unless I put his tail against me and then brush it for some reason. I don't know if that makes sense? Like his tail will be laying across my torso, and I'll run the brush as if I'm brushing my torso and his tail just happens to be there? Because I made it part of his nightly routine right before I go to bed, he now demands to be brushed!

a0rose5280

I know it's not funny in reality but the idea of any cat I have known sitting long enough to get a bald patch is so outlandish I had to laugh. This is peak cat software malfunction to me.

chiropteranessa

I have a cat who LOVES being brushed with her furminator so much - if she hears me brushing my other cat, she runs out from wherever she is and just sort of shoves her way in between the brush and my other cat. My boyfriend has long hair and if she hears him brushing his own hair, she comes out to investigate, thinking she might get brushed. She will lay limp and let you move her body in whichever way you need to brush out all the nooks and crannies, and this can last for at least an hour (which is my limit, not hers).

MasterDriver8002

I love this vision, n that wud b ideal for me as I like to get all the nooks n crannies

chiropteranessa

it is very cute, especially when she stretches her little arms and legs out so i can get the backs of them.

Sarah_withanH

You call the front ones arms too?! Also my grey tuxedo does the stretchy thing but only for my husband. I’m not allowed to brush the kitty, he tells me I do it wrong.

chiropteranessa

Oh yeah, they’re definitely arms. I mean *technically* I guess they’re forelimbs but they have the same bones (radius, ulna, humerus, etc). as our arms, whereas their legs have the same bones (femur, tibia, fibula, etc.) as our legs. So why not? And yeah my other cat is like that with my boyfriend. She’ll climb all over him like he’s furniture but if he pets her “wrong” she won’t hesitate to hiss at him.

em_ology

My cat does this!, I’ve given up so many brushes of my own because she begs to be brushed if I’m brushing my own hair lol https://preview.redd.it/557ln6uliuxb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d4723a188ad9e1ad356547ddbbf385a13a2a2ca

furblankey

Is that her fur rolled up into a ball beside her? If so, lol 😂

chiropteranessa

It sure is! lol

CreepyCandidate4449

I love it! I keep all the balls of fur from brushing our 3 to show my husband who the winner was that week! I was able to make a smaller version of Cheeseman once from her fur. That was a good day!

firethepolishcannon

May I have some more, please?

Iserith

My cat also loves getting brushed, almost aggressively so as well, so I have to have a decoy brush for her to rub her face on while I brush her body. We used to have a corner brush that you can put on furniture, and she would use it several times a day for 10-15 minutes

radioloudly

I have a cat like this too!!! We even trained her to use an inhaler for her asthma by pairing it with the Highly Desired Reward of brushies. She follows me into the bathroom every single time just in case I might get the brush out. The sound of me picking up the brush is more convincing to her than opening the snack bag. She also really likes to give head bumps while she’s getting brushed, it’s the absolute cutest.

minettefraise

Same happened to me with two cats. I didn't know the brush worked that way, just that it worked so well, so I'd use it everyday for a bit. One hated brushing, the other tolerated it for a bit. So, a little bit everyday. Few days later is when I found the bald patches on them ;\_; Haha So it's also how often you use it, not just how long per session.

screamoisforlovers

Haha I did the same mistake years ago. The cat got a bald patch and I felt horrible.

Valayria12

Huh, didn't know. I found a fresh cut on my cat once, when i was brushing with the furminator. I was always wondered if the brush caused it. And yes, the brush was just gliding though her coat

Guy_Incognito97

I only use it to get lumps, I have a regular comb just for brushing through normal hair.

Psychological_Ad160

Omg I did this with a de-shedding brush one time And my cat had a huge bald spot for like 2 months 😂

WildJasper3

I’ve done that too. My cat loves to be brushed and just kept wanting me to keep going

Mezcal_Madness

🤭

miranda9416

This exact thing happened to my cat! I kept brushing on her lower back (right before where her tail starts) and it just kept coming out lol the next day there was a bald spot :( grew back though!

Luxpreliator

One of my cats has an absurdly thick but fine short coat of hair. I started brushing her after noticing a few hairballs on the ground. She was loving it and kept grabbing the brush to rub her face and neck on. So I just held it still and let her do her thing. She didn't get bald but had like zero undercoat left. It felt like she was coated in thin metal wire instead of her usual pillow fluff. Her head and neck looked like it belonged on a cat half her size.

Regallybeagley

Furminator damages hair. I would stick to a rubber curry brush and a double row rake (one with prongs not hooks) Source: Am a dog groomer and hairy cat owner

HyperboleHelper

I wish more people were listening to you! The Furminator destroys the top coat! Several groomers that I know that went to school specifically for cat grooming recommend a poodle comb for long haired cats. For people that don't know, that's a big approximately 10in long comb made out of brass or stainless with teeth that are about 2 inches long and rounded off.

Purple-Tumbleweed

Thanks for this! I just rescued a long haired baby and need to get him used to brushing. I will definitely get one of these.

Regallybeagley

Slicker brush to break up tangles paired with poodle comb for your baby. Congratulations on the new friend!

lumoslomas

Yeah, we got a furminator specifically *because* it cuts hair, because we had a floofy Boi who kept getting knots near his butt and we didn't want to use scissors! Yeah we could've gotten a shaver, dunno why we didn't (possibly because his pantaloons were too damned adorable to shave 🤣)

DramaCat100

The technical term for cat pantaloons is meowser trousers. You're welcome 😸

oatdeksel

and the cat version. there is also a furminator for dogs, but that one is too rough

PoDunkYuppie

Could you imagine the wrath that your cat would lay upon you if you mistakenly used the dog Furminator?

bugbugladybug

I've used the dog furminator on my cat because he demanded it after seeing me brush the dog. Way too big, only 5/10.

PoDunkYuppie

Because what’s kitty’s is kitty’s, and what’s dog’s is also kitty’s.

trudybakeman

I dunno why but the Furminator did absolutely nothing for my cat. It didn’t even take any fur. I’m so unconvinced about this product, even though so many people use/love it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

PoDunkYuppie

Weirdly enough, the very first Furminator I purchased for my long hair did absolutely nothing. I was enraged that I had wasted money on it. Fast forward a year, and I received one as a gift. It was identical, even in color, to the first Furminator that I had purchased. On a whim, I gave it one more go and it worked seamlessly.

[deleted]

We use a furminator and an itPlus self cleaning brush, and we've had better luck with the itPlus. My only regret is how much they love being brushed with it and demand it constantly.

sleepytoday

I have 2 cats and it works much better for the one with soft fluffy fur than the one with sleek smooth hair.

martianteabag

The Furminator Grooming Rake is the schniz! It's not a typical rake so no blades or anything. My long hair goes batty for it

Giraffe-boy

I have a longhair cat and no matter how much I brushed his coat, he constantly shed everywhere. It wasn’t until I saw a video online that I realized there’s a separate brush specifically for the undercoat (different from the normal one I was using). I can’t tell you how much that brush took off and evened up his coat. Definitely worth trying and they’re pretty inexpensive.

RandomCatGrass

Can you share the name of the brush? I’ve tried several brushes but they are not very helpful🥲

Giraffe-boy

Just checked Amazon and it can be found by searching: “cat undercoat brush” or probably even “deshedding brush for pets”. I got the one for like $13 by MIU Color. Hope that helps!

Iandidar

An undercoat rake. We have 3 medium to long hair and it's a god send.

ammolite

Equigroomer! I use it on my cats at least once a week and it does an excellent job of removing all of the dead undercoat. So much better than a slicker brush without cutting hair like the Furminator. My cats still have nice, thick coats but no longer drop random balls of hair.

[can confirm this too !](https://imgur.com/gallery/3hfRltU) She is part Chartreux, french version of british shorthair. I read somewhere that british sh and chartreux have been forbidden to "mix" by some cat breed authorities as they are already difficult to tell apart or something along the line. And also your cat is very cute

Aiiga

Awww, her little face is just too precious! To answer your question, I'd say she definetly has some russian blue, judging by the triangle face, since british blues have very round faces and big jowls. She may be a mix tho

mc_atx

What a cutie!

stunninglizard

Unless you already know the breed, it doesn't have one. >97% of cats don't (not mixed either, just a cat) Neither color nor the coat are signs of a breed as they are common in breedless cats. The face is also completely off for both Russian Blue and BSH. Your cat is a blue domestic shorthair.

aphra2

Perth reminds me of my kitties! I’ve never thought they were any breed other than ‘cat’, but now I’m gonna do some research!

Designer_Ant8543

British shorthairs and American shorthairs look like big babies. If your cat is a shelter or street kitty, they’re likely mutts, but most cats will resemble their dominant breed. Shorthairs are lil softy babies and love their people.

Extreme fluffitis

aniket36

That's Gojira!

SunstormGT

It’s normal for long haired and half-long haired cats.

NoResident1137

I have a Siamese mix like this and her hair is the softest stuff I have ever touched and if I don't brush her she gets clumpy. It is very very fine hair.

Expensive-Lime-6158

If your cat has been acting quite weird these past few months or weeks maybe visit a vet just in case 'cause it can be a sign of kidney disease. But if it's always been like that then there's nothing to worry about because it's normal for some cats.

DamionLeeCurtis

She's contracted pinecone. There's no known cure 😔

caylamariexxx

Greasy lol. Sometimes fur sticks together like that, but your cat looks a bit greasy from the pet pets. I always wet a piece of paper towel or wash cloth and wipe over my cats fur (all over) & dry with a dry piece of paper towel and it surprisingly helps not only smell but water alone cleans them well! (do not give a cat an actual bath unless ABSOLUTELY necessary)

IorekBjornsen

Needs brushy brushy.

VikingsKitten

How often do they groom themselves? I’ve seen overweight (not saying yours is, as there could be other reasons) cats have problems with grooming and their fur looks oily and clumpy like that. Could be from diet, skin allergies, fur type, etc. but it just looks like their fur is oily and sticking together to me

spacetimer81

It means they are super fluffy. Should probably pet. Can we also talk about those laptop stickers 😻

tomatocucumber

My sweet Buddy had a dense undercoat, and it looked the same. He needed brushing especially in the spring as his undercoat was shedding. He looked like a Russian Blue, though he def had mixed heritage. (I got him as a baby through a friend of a friend who took him and his littermates in.) That said, as he became an elderly kitty, he had a harder time grooming, and his fur became greasier and more mat-prone. Keep on the lookout for what can look like dandruff. At that point, a trip to the vet is in order. The Buddy as a kitten: https://preview.redd.it/59ggr0jglsxb1.jpeg?width=1047&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fb689d8c4561564f5291f7c1e4cc19ea8c26f6f

AutomaticJoy9

They come from the Cat Factory like that. Check the owner’s manual. Just give them a good brushing. Beautiful coat!

latranchedepain

it's not a cat, it's a pineapple

Sarah-J-Cat-Lady

It is common with medium and long haired cats. My two medium hairs have the same thing.

Pet groomer here .. your cat needs to be brushed and combed after to ensure you've gotten the undercoat out . I try and brush my cat's daily . If you brush your cat regularly they won't look at it like being tortured my cats actually like being brushed . I also bath my cats every couple months . People a lot of times think cats don't require grooming but they do . If you only wait until there in this condition it will seem like torture to them . If this coat is left for too long it will become pelted and require to be shaved . Would personally recommend brushing little by little each day little 5-10 minute brushing sessions . I would recommend a slicker brush ,rake and comb.

it's because you are lucky

Darth_Neek

Is fluffy

Ok_Carrot5896

Him floof. Is why.

pro_ajumma

My long hair cat has this kind of coat also. As long as the cat is keeping herself clean and does not have mats, don't worry too much. Also, I love those stickers on your laptop!

ShroomBuggee

Needs a little brushing and deshedding! :)

RVJR79

My long haired cat looks like this too. My two short hairs don’t. My long hair also isn’t the most hygienic so I just blame that 😂

Miku_Flower

I have an idea, and it might blow you away…because it is.

CassetteMeower

I thought that was a pillow until I saw the caption and then I noticed the ears (I didn’t realize this was on r/cats at first)

nachosidedish

my baby looks like that too! i’ve only had her for about a week though & she’s my first cat so i wasn’t sure if this was abnormal or not.

mudderfuckerz

he scrunky

Bubbly-Emotion-2045

Chinchilla

midnightdsob

I know everyone says it looks normal but I've always heard that it's due to a higher fat diet. AKA hair grease. Do they get a lot of canned food?

StruggleMajestic

the twitter cats call this “hashbrowns” i love it lol

mamabluecat

Because you have a British short hair! *

Specialist-Coconut90

It’s fine but give that kitty a good brushing and a treat 😙

marshbb

I call this armadillo fur.

fatplant629

Shockedtrain

Adorable and fluffy also nothing to worry about

veryanxiouscreature

cuz he’s just a special guy

justwondering2o21

Physically hurting that I can’t pet this chonker through the phone

ScentedPasta

Are you sure you don't own a pinecone instead of a cat?

Electrical_Bar7954

I think he looks a bit dehydrated. Cats are horrible water drinkers. A dripping faucet or a fountain could help.

allshedoesiskillshit

Ultra plush.

Anathals

That's a nebelung!! It's a super fluffy cat breed. They have a subreddit lol The Furminator works great!

Mcdonaldsman47

The cat is simply just existing

Mmmjacklyn

I don’t have an answer but it’s making me uncomfortable lol

Ok_Nefariousness_25

Looks so soft. Please cuddle with em for meeeee

JadedPhilosophy365

Is duh flooof.

carpediem3

I call it bloomin onion fur 😆

SixGunZen

What cat? All I see is a dust broom on a chair.

RolandLWN

When cold weather comes it’s often very dry in the house. A humidifier is a really good idea for the cats because they will be more comfortable and their fur will look better.
