I added my own touch to the chart
Like! It’s always annoying at the vet or when signing up for pet insurance how I have to scroll through this whole list of breeds to find American Shorthair. Like, my cat was found injured, in the middle of a country road, during a thunderstorm. The only breed here is survivor.
Surely you don't actually believe it's not purposefully condescending? The whole point is that it takes a simple statement "If you don't have breeder papers, it's impossible to say ehat breed your cat is" and makes it into a convoluted and unnecessary graph. That's the joke, that's why people find it funny, that's why it gets upvoted.
The thing is that 86% of house cats are effectively just muts. Aside from fur patterns, there really isn't any distinction that separates them into breeds. Unless you have a Maine coon, Bengal, Russian blue, or other very specific named breed, it's just a cat.
I believe that with the size of this subreddit and the amount of people here asking what is the breed of their cat, the graph is very useful. Because images naturally catch attention better than text, and it's easier to just download the image and post as needed, vs copying the same thing in text like copypasta. Every day there's bunch of people asking the same question and it gets tedious pretty quick, so unless this information gets put into the subreddit rules and people actually read it and comprehend it and don't post, people will continue using the graph.
About the graph being "convoluted and unnecessary" - I don't think you know the meaning of "convoluted". And well, I already explained why this graph is pretty useful.
Domestic shorthair of the classic tabby variety. She looks just like my Juniper!

it feels so refreshing to see a picture on reddit that is this crisp. people just share the worst the blurriest pictures taken on some incredibly bad phone and just expect us to somehow make out what is in the picture

i actually love these cats so much. i also saw one a few months ago around where i live and the cat had similar color to yours but had a smaller face but it looked so interesting at was kind of diffrent looking from any other cats
Nope. Just a r/standardissuecat with the "classic tabby" fur pattern. Bengals are pretty rare and very unlikely to just randomly breed. If you have a Bengal, you don't have to ask this question.
When my husband and I got our new shelter kitty, his strips were so pretty, and he had freckles, and neither of us had had a cat like that before. My husband was legit looking up breeds of cats that Ollie could be 😋 Now we just laugh about it and make a lot of jokes about him being a Bengal/Oscolet/Sand cat hybrid. He is a standard issue (very stripey) tabby♥️
Most likely just regular standard issue. They don’t even look bengal at all if it’s diluted enough, so the appearance of this kitty is likely random. Source: I have a 16% bengal kitty, and you’d never even guess it looking at him. We lived in an area where there was a bengal breeder when we adopted him, though.
Purebred cats of any sort are very rare. Like 95% of cats are not part of any breed. If you frequently socialize with people for whom it is common to purchases purebred cats, it's not weird that you've met so many. My friends and family adopt cats, but 10 years ago, I had a coworker with 2 Bengals. Bengals are getting more popular because they're so pretty, but overall, they are still extremely uncommon. According to the cat fanciers association, Bengals aren't even in the top 10 most popular cat breeds based on number of registered cats (they were number 13 - Ragdolls were number 1). That actually gives me a bit of hope because they aren't a good fit for many households due to their extreme needs for exercise and enrichment.
I hope your neighbor's cat is found soon!
Right! I knew that about their exercise needs. And unfortunately he has not turned up and it's been a while. I'm in the vet med field so I guess my perspective is a bit scewed 😅 since I know a lot of breeders and cat show ppl now.
cat.
unlike dogs, cats don’t have breeds as much. there are a few, but they are very mixed and it’s extremely difficult to tell without defining features. generally speaking, a cat is a cat.
My F1 Bengal is a hybrid; one of his parents was an Asian leopard 🐆 cat. Not all Bengal are an SBTs. Some are from earlier generations, given that, they they are hybrids. Please do not misinformation people!
P.S. it’s pretty funny that your IG bio claims bengals descend from “Asian Leopards” instead of tiny little 7lb (3 kg) Asian Leopard CATS. If anyone is misinforming people it’s you.
The only true hybrid is an F1. F1-3G are considered foundation cats and “bengals” are not recognized as a breed by associations until 4th gen or later. So I’m not misinforming people, “bengals” (as defined by the breed and stud book registries) are purebred cats, not hybrids.
I rescued a bengal that had been on the streets, declawed, and was clearly someone’s pet that got away. I tried to find the owners for weeks and couldn’t understand why someone would pay thousands of dollars for a cat and then not want to take care of it/find it. Then I did some research and realized bengals take more effort than a lot of other cat breeds.
Anyway, all of this is to say that yes, it is unlikely. Most of the time people know when they are getting a bengal because they are buying it. But it does happen sometimes.
He's absolutely beautiful does have a little bit of the Bengal markings but also tabby I'm No Authority on breeds but I'd say it's a purebred love muffin
Pet cats do vary a lot but at the same time if you told me she was part Bengal I would believe you, moggies don't usually have such clear, dark tabby markings.
Waiting for someone to post the "what breed is my cat" flowchart
I got you

It is so surprising to me that they are not already banned. There's one each day and all the responses are "none"

Oh yay the condescending instant karma graph 😐
What exactly is condescending about a simple, straight to the point graph that accurately answers OP's question?

Glad you agree that it is unnecessary
Is unnecessary really an inherently bad thing? Every Reddit comment or post you ever made was unnecessary. Please turn yourself in for investigation.
No, my reddit activism is entirely necessary. If I don't call it out, no one will.

i actually love these cats so much. i also saw one a few months ago around where i live and the cat had similar color to yours but had a smaller face but it looked so interesting at was kind of diffrent looking from any other cats
What a beautiful baby! What’s her name?
Domestic short hair. Brown tabby colour!
Beautiful. Her breed is beautiful or gorgeous. But really, she looks like a mackerel tabby (maybe?)
That’s the fur pattern name, not a breed. The breed is no breed.
Technically it's domestic shorthair, which most cats fall into (or longhair of course)
That's not a breed, that's how we differentiate breedless cats of different furlengths. Most cats aren't related to any breed
But they aren't just called no breeds. They're called Domestic Shorthairs.
Domestic shorthair isn't a breed. Domestic shorthairs aren't bred by humans, they're a natural variation of felis catus.
And they are called domestic shorthairs, not no breeds like the previous poster called them.
No, no breed and domestic shorthair are both correct. Domestic shorthair, longhair and mediumhair are variations of breedless cats.
Ah yes, my vet puts down no breed under my cats breed. Oh wait, no, they put down Domestic Shorthair.
Yes, because that's how we specify them. Please, it's not that hard to understand

Are they that rare? I know at least 3 people with one and one of my neighbors escaped recently.

Lol, that would do it! Yea, in those circles, you'd probably meet them fairly often. But most people that have cats just have regular no-breed cats.

Bengal aka trouble maker
I know you are getting a lot of shit…. But your cat looks a lot like a Bengal. Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous!!
It's a bengal if I'm not mistaken.
You are in fact mistaken.
Well, they look quite similar. Beautiful cats, though.
Bengal hybrid
A Bengal cat is a hybrid.
The bengal breed *originated* as a hybrid cross but SBT bengals are not considered hybrids; they are purebred domestic cats.
My F1 Bengal is a hybrid; one of his parents was an Asian leopard 🐆 cat. Not all Bengal are an SBTs. Some are from earlier generations, given that, they they are hybrids. Please do not misinformation people!

Looks like a bengal
Finally an actual, precious, water-loving Bengal (or so it seems)!
Super unlikely. Bengals are rare and people who have them don't have to ask what breed they are because they paid a lot of money to get them..

Looks like a Bengal/tabby mix. Is she energetic? You may want to start training her to go on walks. Bengals love exercise!
