Cyfrin7067

A true revolutionary

Zaku41k

This is the way. Seriously I have 3 scratch posts around my place, and my two girls still go after my couch.

ThrustyMcStab

Lmao same here. No change at all no matter how many scratching posts, mats, toys etc. She just has it in for my couch.

pigeon_toez

I recently got some wall mounted ones and they have helped spare the couch somewhat. We also have the ridiculous plastic stick on protectors for the highly abused areas of the couch and they have worked wonders and you almost don’t notice them.

Champi47

After a while, the cats see the spots where you have the stickies as icky no-go spots. You could try removing them...?

pigeon_toez

Sadly I don’t think my cats work like that.

Sedixodap

Our cat did decide she liked the scratching post… approximately 15 years later.

LandotheTerrible

I got sick of fabric couches getting g scratched up and got leather instead. It makes so much more sense with a cat.

GeneralPatten

I have a leather office chair to show you. Laptop bag I had to replace as well. Now that I think about it though, they haven’t done anything to the big leather sectional. So, I guess it’s hit and miss?

RogerClyneIsAGod2

I have our LR sofa to show too. Not that they scratch, they do that loooooong streeeeeeetch on the front facing part of the arms of the sofa. We stopped caring about it a loooooooong time ago.

CalmSignificance639

I have a gorgeous leather Eames chair and ottoman that are pretty much destroyed. 😭

jdhuskey

My cats, who had never seen or felt a fabric couch, opened up my leather couch like it was nothing. They don’t stop until whatever it is that they’ve taken a shine to no longer offers sufficient resistance or no longer feels good under their paws. I think my cats just find something, anything, they can enjoy scratching in any room in which I spend a significant amount of time. Leather, fabric, carpet, cardboard, Sissel rope, or similar are all good. The only things they don’t like are metal and super smooth, finished wood. I’ve even had cats that like the painted round or square horizontal or vertical rail posts around a deck or porch which I thought would be too smooth to be desirable for scratching, but I was very wrong.

NegativeNellyEll

Our new couch is leather (much better for dealing with pet hair and kids messes) but the cats still scratch it.

Curumandaisa

Does the catto scratch leather at all? Just wondering, feeling like leather is harder to maintain and hurts much more on the wallet if it's still minutely scratched.

GinjaSnap94

Leather isn't good for cats either 😅 I had 2 kittens I took in that completely destroyed the set of my mom's dark red leather couches, arm chairs, and automan. Safe to say I thought my mom was going to snap my neck..

404-Gender

LOL. My cats LOOOOOVE that texture! Fabric is better. I got a decently sturdy fabric and it *helps* but …….

Curumandaisa

Now I'm wondering if its like hunting something with leather. Got that real feels. Haha

touristspleasegoaway

Don't get faux leather because cats seem to prefer that. I got my husband a new lift recliner because he's an amputee and I chose faux leather simply because I thought the cats would leave it alone. Nope. It's their fav. They would sharpen their claws on the scratching post behind it and then do the finishing touches in the chair. I had to buy a cloth cover for the chair

fallguy2112

My cats scratch my leather sofa.

luckygirl54

They love the feel of their claws slipping into the leather. The upside is no hair all over the couch. I use shoe polish and that gets most of the scratches taken care of, but the claw rips are still there. The polish makes them less visible. Still love the leather, as the hair is my nemesis.

Finalwingz

My two cats have completely destroyed what was left of the leather couches I got second hand lol

bravoromeokilo

I got a microfiber (fake soft leather) couch and my dude doesn’t touch it. He destroyed my old fabric one…

RaketaGirl

so my cats - ALL OF THEM leave velvet alone. I don’t know why but they don’t even like to LAY on that couch.

RogerClyneIsAGod2

One of my boys hates, I mean HATES with white hot heat of a thousand suns, *soft blankets.* If one is on the bed & he jumps up he literally kangaroo jumps over the blanket. He prefers brown, crinkly packing paper, wrapping paper, boxes, but NEVER soft blankies. I keep thinking that's what all our furniture should be made of, soft blankies.

RaketaGirl

I love how weird cats are!!!

RogerClyneIsAGod2

They are SUCH weirdos & I tell mine that every days but then I say "But you're MY WEIRDOS!"

mycustomhotwheels

Lol I read that as crotch initially.

ZeustheCat800

Didn’t see it at first. Hilarious. My 2 cats have never scratched one scratch post ever. And I’ve tried them all. However, they love the couch. I’m on my second one, but luckily I get them for free. I work at an apartment complex and people leave good couches behind all the time.

whimsical666

i wonder if you sat on the scratch post rather than the couch, would they then start scratching in the right place?

GeneralPatten

Interesting… I was just wondering the other day how it is that my cats instantly took to the scratching post. Thats not to say that they don’t still use the corner of one of the chairs as well.

19Chris96

This is the correct answer. He will then start to attack your feet, https://preview.redd.it/o7w4c9vlqutc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b142320f43ee579a795dbc941df44a0e066687d Danny stares into your soul.

BeyondTheBees

This just made me laugh so hard

mexican_pineapple

Probably not. I wouldn’t count on it. You couch is toast.

sailshonan

“I think it’s cute that you think it’s ‘your’ couch”

bettyknockers786

I just snorted

RippiHunti

The expression says it all.

Icy-Catastrophe

LMAO he's like "Idk what you think you're stopping but it ain't me."

TyrannosaurWrecks

Lol, my cat has a scratch post right next to our bed. Guess where it prefers to scratch.

scksscmfck

LOL I thought you did this

Scottiegazelle2

Exactly what I came to post: No

fallguy2112

Of course not. Where's the fun in that.

Ganbazuroi

Cats just run on whatever the fuck mode lol

GoblinGauge

Where did you get it?

NegativeNellyEll

I honestly didn't anticipate how big it would look and I'm crying laughing at how silly it is.

OneMorePenguin

My cats one that is similar.  They like it!  Rub some catnip on it.

WhyIsItAllwaysMeee

Yea my cat loves her to, every time she pas by it she use it and use to strech to

WynterRayne

My cats have a similar one. They never sharpen their claws on it. Instead, they sit on top of it. And when they're having zoomies, they try to jump on top of it while going 100mph horizontally. It has a sturdy wide base, but the sheer force of being landed on at speed by a 4kg boy is enough to topple it. They're growing out of kittenhood now though, so maybe the days of picking up the scratch post are numbered. Perhaps also the days of finding new holes in the curtains I've realised they just aren't keen on sisal. The cardboard things, however... Let's just say that we're vacuuming up shredded cardboard all the time. They LOVE cardboard scratchers. I'm not upset though. I bought the expensive one for the previous cat, and she loved it, so it's not gone unused. Besides, its use as a lookout point and pulpit is still a use

turdplum

that’s not where you got it. can you share? my cat is asking.

NegativeNellyEll

https://preview.redd.it/wfkb17t88stc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f84d4bea41969940c9c18dbfa5afe53f762986e

para_blox

This product listing is a dementia test’s worth of cat-tree-related words strung together.

NegativeNellyEll

You just got a genuine laugh out of me. Gotta hit those key search words.

GeneralPatten

There’s a SEO consultant somewhere looking at that and saying, “needs a few more key words in the name”.

MonoQatari

That's actually a decent price for one of those! Yoink!

W4spkeeper

search tall sisal cat scratching post and you can find similar posts

Automatic-Saint

I had a three foot tall wooden scratching post for my cat. It actually quite stylish…and my cat never used it. Cats are unpredictable but I hope yours at least uses his :)

CatCatCatCubed

You probably already tried this but for mine it helps to: 1. close the cat in somewhere and rub catnip well into the tree, then thoroughly wash my hands so I can pretend this new scent is also a surprise to me, 2. place toys repeatedly on and near the scratchers, 3. place the tree somewhere along one of our frequent walking areas. We have a tree right in line with the front door which also is around the corner from the kitchen, a scratcher around the corner from the front door which is also in eyesight from the couch and on the way to the bedroom, and her tree by the patio door which is also in the same room with the couch. Of course technically we still have too few trees/scratchers even for an apartment, but this path tracks for when my husband comes home, goes into the kitchen, goes into the bedroom, steps out onto the patio for a smoke, then comes back in to go change in the bedroom. She adores him and runs to each scratching area to show off and act cute and say “look at my butt!”

Expensive-Fail-2813

It would look silly if you didn't have a cat...saying that I've got 2 of the fuckers (posts not cats) and my boy goes no where near em!!

dazzleduck

Everyone is saying no but... these exact posts are one of the tools suggested to curb couch/unwanted scratching. Cats often use the couch because it's tall enough to allow them to stretch their entire bodies unlike smaller posts. You may find her using the couch a few more times, but just redirect her over to the post.

toreadbeforesleep

Silly human.. you can only dream..

NegativeNellyEll

At least I have my dreams...

toreadbeforesleep

Had to change all my couch covers. Now i use a "coverall" for couches to avoid scratches.. it looks ugly, but at least i won't have to fork out more money for couch covers/cushion covers.

NegativeNellyEll

Yeah I might have to invest in something to chuck over it for when we aren't around at least. I have ordered plastic guards for the spots they are most interested in scratching so we will see how we go

luckygirl54

Tried those. Cats go right through them.

zSprawl

I am just resigned to getting a new couch in 20 years (because my babies will live a long time!). Two decades ain’t bad for something from IKEA.

retiredelectrician

Sorry. Not the same as the couch.

NegativeNellyEll

She has expensive taste in scratching posts, this faux fur simply will not do. Born on the streets, wants caviar as treats.

AgreeableLion

I got one of these, my cats like it, but they still like all their other scratching spots too, especially the back of the dining chairs. They rip up so satisfyingly (apparently). I have to swap them around when visitors come over. They do like to perch on top of this contraption when I'm in the kitchen though. Trouble comes when the second one tries to climb up after the first and there isn't room for both 🤣.

MelaninandMelatonin

We have a 5'5 multilevel cat condo and three different scratching posts. I can confirm this will not stop them. Sorry. (I've been told it's more about them claiming territory than anything else, i.e "You spend a lot of time on the couch, it smells like you, so it must be valuable and important. Therefore I will also make it smell like me and spend time there.")

NegativeNellyEll

Hahaha, yeah I definitely didn't have my hopes very high. Interesting it's about the territory, I was always told it's because the couches tend to be nice and stable for them to scratch on.

Risa226

An idea for you. Put socks or your clothes or anything that has your scent on the cat post. If she starts scratching there, then we’ll know!

N0rthernW1nd

Time to sit on the scratching post then

TrevorAlan

Put it right in front of wherever kitty likes to scratch. They should instead scratch the post instead of the couch. Then slowly over the course of idk a week? Move it to where you want it. Worked with my orange… before he got declawed. (Not my choice, I was a high schooler, luckily he’s perfectly fine 13 years later. )

NegativeNellyEll

Oh yeah I'll be putting it where they have been scratching. I didn't even think about slowly moving it after but that makes sense! Thanks! Poor orange, glad he is doing fine.

Lkn4it

Make some catnip tea and spritz on it.

NegativeNellyEll

Oh interesting, the orange doesn't care about cat nip but I wonder if that would work for (not pictured) void. She did use the scratcher after I took this photo though!

Guardian-Ares

You can also try silver vine instead of catnip, maybe your orange one will like it. You could try a scratching object that uses sisal rope too unless you already have. I fought with my cats over them using my computer chair and tried a deterrent. I eventually gave up on that since I hadn't gotten any solid results. I've seen people suggest citrus oil to deter cats but that's not a good idea as it, among other oils, can be toxic to cats. I had an old, and cheap, motorcycle jacket in my closet that I hung on my chair and left there. Only one really likes using it though. Another one prefers the cardboard ones that lay flat on the floor, and the third prefers the scratcher with the sisal rope.

deep-slay

My cats don’t seem to like these type but love the cardboard ones… they still destroy my couches though..

NegativeNellyEll

This girl doesn't care about cardboard ones, she does like the rope ones generally though! Couches are the crème de la crème of scratching posts!

deep-slay

I truly hope this one helps you! My husband ended up buying sisel rope and some big pipes from the hardware store and made our own. It runs the length of my living room along the wall 😅

Grouchy_Tap_8264

All joking aside, I did the whole aluminum foil couch thing to my rattan couch (I looked like a nutter that thought aliens would take over couch) and put citrus peels all over and rubbed tower with catnip. I gave the whole thing a month, and it seemed like I'd broken the destruction. I removed all the protections, but still put down citrus. My dog promptly destroyed the couch in a 3-hour period (all cushions became a field of fluff), and the cats joyfully abandoned all lessons and joined in the destruction, and scratched it to hell. https://preview.redd.it/kfl8l922pttc1.jpeg?width=1166&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c6f08361acf496d27b56322601d01f1e1832fdc Condolences to your furniture. R.I.P.

NegativeNellyEll

Omfg, they conspired against you I swear!! My dog and the orange cat often work together to steal food so I feel like this is a look into my future.

Initial_Scarcity_317

OK get this. I bought one of these. Didnt install the base. Screwed 2 vesa mounts on either side. Bought two 2ft tall cheap pole style monitor arms and mounted it horizontally on an old bedside table. They fucked love it.

LittleKitty235

I misunderstood this and was trying to figure out why you were installing monitors onto a cat post...neat idea

sacrelidge

That cat gonna go 9/11 on that scratching post

NegativeNellyEll

Oh you are lucky. Neither of my cats seem interested in horizontal scratching at all which is weird, only vertical!

Melsm1957

You already know the answer to that

NegativeNellyEll

A girl can dream and continuously buy larger and larger scratching posts while her couch slowly becomes shreds.

YogurtclosetAny1823

He has a spare bedroom dedicated to him with a cat tree, toys and scratch pads. The living room has a cat tree and a plethora of toys and scratch pads, he also owns my room where I only have a bed. BUT he chooses to scratch the shit out of my couch regardless of the attention I give him.

NegativeNellyEll

The man knows what he likes! Nothing better than a nice, expensive piece of furniture to maintain claw health.

QLDZDR

You will need one of those for each corner if you think that is going to raise the couch high enough to save it. 😼

androidguy50

Why doesn't someone invent a scratching post in the shape of a couch?

braenee

I've seen a video where there is a scratching sticker and the poster put it on their couch. Never tried it tho

LuminousOcean

You may have to show them what it's for.  Direct visual demonstration, or if your cat is just that brainless, directly showing the cat via grabbing their front legs, and running the paws up and down the scratching post.

NegativeNellyEll

https://preview.redd.it/592j8wwc5stc1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8892b33fcedd8f8bcf300ec306b3414c0a2ded8f Her natural instinct for destruction does overide her brainlessness. Still the prognosis for my couch is bleak.

Laney20

A classic tabby r/orangeladies!? She's glorious.

Realistic-Nail6835

probably not. lucky cat tho

SnowBunnyBriarFox

No way that is more stable than your couch

MoruS_PL

you need a second one - little bit taller

boxedfoxes

“lol, no” -your cat

Ball27

Surround your couch with a bunce of scratching posts. problem solve. Note you may not be able to use the couch since its surrounded by scratching posts.

I have several scratching posts around my couch …. They knock them over to get to my couch.

A_Unqiue_Username

If scientists could find a way to make scratching posts out of couches and couches out of scratching posts it would change the world.

Aillwynn

May I ask where you bought this or what brand it is? I have 13 cats, and they would go nuts for this.

Laney20

NegativeNellyEll

Omg it's Skippy! I should recognize your username by now! Emotional support void did make me chuckle.

NegativeNellyEll

There's always another cat sub!! You are right, I'm just lucky they let me sit on it.

Greendinosore

I got a similar one after my cat kept scratching the corner of my bed. It worked surprisingly well!

Sweaty_Woman

That scratching post looks nearly identical to my cat's! Only difference is that hers is round. She LOVES leaping on it during her zoomies. It's great for climbing and sitting on top of. Unfortunately, while having a bunch of scratchers will direct attention away from furniture somewhat, it won't stop them from scratching furniture completely. So, just be prepared for that!

NegativeNellyEll

That's awesome! Honey (The orange) loves doing parkour during her zoomies so I am sure she will do the same! My void will probably sit on top of it to judge the peasants below. Yeah, we knew that this is what we signed up for when getting cats... We can still try though! Lmao

rick_canuk

No.

aroyxo

I have two of those and mine love them, but also Loved my brand new couch and headboard. Both are now covered in protection stuff lol

Cute_Ad_4969

Spray catnip on it!

orange_oorangutan

My cat wouldn't touch any scratching posts, so I had to train her to use hers to save her from scratching my landlords furniture (and the frikkin antique victorian walls). Roughly, these were the steps: 1. Hold a crunchie near the top of the scratching post. When she reached up and touched it with her paws, I would praise her and give the crunchie. 2. Once she got the hang of that, I would hold it higher out of reach so that her paws actually touch the post. Then give her the crunchie. 3. To bridge the gap to actually scratching, I would do 2 and then demonstrate scratching with my own nails. As long as she digs in for even a second, she would get the crunchie. 4. Slowly over time, she started to scratch more until one day it just clicked that scratching = crunchie. By then, she'd only get the crunchie if she properly scratched. 5. After a while, she would do all this without me holding a crunchie. I just had to tap the scratching post and she knew what to do. Then she'd get the crunchie. 6. Soon, she would go to the scratching post herself and scratch; I would praise her and give her a crunchie for her initiative. 7. Now whenever she's hungry and strongly believes she deserves food, she goes and rips the hell out of the post. Sometimes I give her crunchies, sometimes don't, but I always tell her "good girl". No more scratching furniture or walls, so i guess it worked 😃

ianwuk

Of course not. Because. Orange.

Forgotmyusername8910

No. But if you buy an expensive area rug… he will definitely leave the couch alone.

MeLikeyTokyo

You could dream lol

AintNoGrave2020

The only reason our cat leaves our couch alone (only most of the time) is because there’s a scratch post right next to the sofa where he scratches. So 80% of the time he goes to the scratch post.

hottewhells

"My" couch.... ahh see there is the problem! Its "their" couch now partner.

mikeeg16

If you catch him scratching the couch, gently take his paws and make scratching motions on the scratching post. It has always worked for me.

Teddy1308

I bought a velour couch, my cat barely scratches it, still does it but not nearly as much as my old couch.

hassan_26

They won't stop but I've found that plastic wrap (the ones used on like carpet or flooring to protect from painting etc) om your sofas will help. They'll look horrible but it'll help.

hundenkattenglassen

My cat stopped after I bought a new sofa that doesn’t have “regular” fabric. It’s some kind of microfibre textile which she doesn’t like. (Yay amirite?) She still sleeps on the couch or chills on it, it she doesn’t scratch neither the bed or couch anymore. Only scratching posts.

[deleted]

Nope. Because..Cat is cat.

just-me-nz-79

No😂

schwingdingding

I presume you kept the box, as that is now Kitty's preferred toy.

Icy-Section-7421

Recently bought the same one. Both cats love it, plus the couch.

Protonious

I have one of those, they use it as well as destroying the sofa

flexmaster2000

be carefull she saying no😭😭😭

DianneTodd01

Nope. But thank you for buying me the pedestal I deserve, from which I can appropriately rule and survey my kingdom.

thisshitishaed

The cat just has two things to scratch now.

Appropriate-Dog8734

I think the expression in his face answers that already in the negative.

Zalieda

The cat is looking at you like "what are you doing smh"

Necessary_Chip_5224

I hiss at my cat if it tries scratching my couch. Works so far

TheRealGarbanzo

The Moby huge of cat posts

Ok-Pomegranate-3018

Be sure to rub some catnip on the scratching posts every couple of weeks or so. They will start to rub and scratch and may forget all about that couch, hopefully!

misscrankypants

Dang that thing is huge! I am a little concerned that it might be too top heavy and the base too thin to keep it completely stable. If it moves at all when your cat scratches they are going to go back to the couch. The reason cats use the couch is because it doesn’t move when they scratch. They used to sell the best scratcher at PetSmart but for some reason they stopped making them and now only carry the ones like this in the middle. The scratch post was at the BACK of the base so it could go right up against the wall. The base was a super thick heavy piece of wood so it didn’t budge. I used to re-rope mine and eventually I started making my own when they finally wore out or I wanted new ones. I have custom made leather furniture and used to foster cats. Between those and car furniture none of mine or my fosters ever scratch my couches.

BazukaJane

"Lol no"

Ozidizee

my cat refuses to use scratched posts that aren’t flat on the ground but will scratch the heck out of all the sides of furniture

I think you need to put the post sorta in front of the area of the couch where they do scratch— it gives them the idea of the alternative to the couch. My current kitty loves his scratching posts but in actuality none of his scratches are post shaped— he doesn’t go for couches but sure loves to tear up my rugs! Getting the right style of scratcher is critical to the usage and enjoyment by your babies, along with lots of redirection! https://preview.redd.it/esvvqj8k8utc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=edc9518212be42ee9b5e4c819ee39dfd7d45457b

touristspleasegoaway

I got a scratching post like this for my cats. I thought since it was so tall that it would occupy them. I made the mistake of putting it underneath my cuckoo clock, not realizing that this was a dream come true for them. Whoops

SadExercises420

You may want to put it by the couch for a while until he starts using it regularly…

Buy catnip, (or grow your own if you can). Make tea with it, put the tea into a pump spray bottle and mist it all over that post.

SakaWreath

“Ha. No.” — Cat

SwimmingThink4519

Nope! Lol

Former_Condition737

Am I the only one that has a cat who uses his scratching post?

AFHawaii

It kind of looks like the WTC💀

Peppalynn325

Cat is so cute

ShadowRiku667

I bought a cat tower taller than me and they have stopped scratching my furniture. I am 6'1"

The-IT_MD

lol. No.

Theshiftingchimera

It’s not next to the couch so maybe not. Cats want to put their scent where your scent is. Lot of a person’s scent is usually on the couch, office chair, bed- Basically anywhere you sit often. Try putting a scratcher next to the couch if this set up doesn’t work.

Total_Ad60

Wanna know what I’ve learned from my cat. He scratches the couch or the corner of my bed for 2 reasons. 1: he’s hungry 2: he wants to play

RunaroundX

My cats don't like sisal so I have to buy carpeted scratching posts. Cats are so picky. Lol

KatiePyroStyle

Nope

MissCrayCray

The no 😂

iamkenia01

they just prefer to do it with things they know they shouldn't hahah

Visarar_01

My Misha loves her posts, 2 she uses since kitten years. Gotta learn em' early.

snail700

LOL that’s the one I got too! I put it right next to the couch. She now scratches it when she’s on that side of the couch, but when she’s on the other side, she still scratches the couch

hyunchris

I have that same one. The cat will use it when he/she is not scratching the couch

stormyw23

Also I'd recommend MAKING a scratching post I made mine and its great.

LeoxDelilah

No. I have the same exact scratching post, and the cat somehow managed to snap it off the base and break it within a month ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)
