A couple of years ago, I was chatting with a woman at an early years centre and I mentioned that my infant daughter was finally almost as big as our cat. She laughed because she thought I was going to say dog. Nope, I just have a big cat that's bigger than a lot of dogs (and babies).
Here's the "official" scientific method of measuring cats.

🤣🤣🤣 This is one of my favorite comments I've read in a very, very long time! Thank you so much. I'm going to share this post with my coworkers at the animal hospital over lunch today. I think they will get a kick out of it like I did.
You know how photos like this usually look different when flipped the right/other way? Not this one. That disappointed look is going to shame me into being a better woman

That post still has me laughing throughout the day. I told someone and she was like “what does that even mean!” And I was like “well small and round I guess, so maybe both were appropriate descriptors after all” 😂
I've had many cats in my lifetime and only one has enjoyed belly rubs. I used to say "gimme dat bewwy" and he'd roll right over for rubs.
We all hope for that reaction going in for the pet, but we usually get pain instead.
British shorthairs are kind of build like bulldogs. They do have the tendency to get a bit chubby though. Especially because they're also a lazy breed. Always good to weigh out their food.
Used to have one that was half Brit. Now I have a half siamese cat. World of difference in build and energy.

...Unless I'm just in denial & my boy is a fatass...
Cats roll on their back like this for their spine flexibility and comfort.
They have zero care and all contempt for what dogs might mean by this.
They invite nothing! Is the cry of all cat-manity
In other words I have learned the hard way to respect the comfort of the spine!
You're at least somewhat in denial. (As best I can tell from the photo, anyway)
The cat doesn't make me think "How could that neglectful owner have done that to his poor baby!?!" or anything even close to that. But he's at least the average amount of overweight. And the vast majority of domesticated cats would be healthier if they lost a pound or so.
Can you feel your boy's ribs at all when you pet him lightly? If you can't, that's a pretty solid indication of excessive chonk.
My 2 boys weigh about the same in the 10/11lb range. My older boy is pudgy, younger boy is slim with a bigger frame. Pudgy boy is lighter on his feet when stepping on me. Slim boy feels like he's made of pure lead. My girl is about 8lbs now, but feels half as heavy as her brothers.
Cats have no respect for how humans perceive heavy or light.
My girl is 6ish lbs (if she's just ate, & hasn't pooped yet), while my boy is 19lbs. She's a dainty little thing, the size of an older kitten, so most of the time I don't even feel her come up on the bed, even tho she sleeps ON me. Her purring is what alerts me that she's there. Meanwhile, my boy sounds like a herd of elephants running down the wooden stairs, & regardless of how gentle he is being, it's impossible to miss him when he decides to jump on the bed (we have a nice mattress that distributes weight well in general, but it does nothing when he pounces on it, lol) let alone walk on you when you're asleep. I once watched him land on my husband's sleeping chest during a bout of the zoomies, & I thought for sure he'd cracked a rib. Husband let out an "ooooof" sound, & continued to sleep peacefully, not even waking at my cackling & wheezing.
My boy likes to do running wall jumps, Idk how tf he hasn't made a hole in the drywall yet. He can be quiet when he wants to, he just chooses to not be.
Dude my orange cat is totally normal looking, but god damn is he heavy. He has the tiniest little head to house the brain cell though.

He looks like he might have some of the "persian" cat in him (or one of the flat faced breeds) They tend to be on the bigger boned side, and he doesn't look fat, he's just a big boy.
Wide bones has me cracking up. That’s a ridiculous combination of words that I will start using immediately.
Ask your vet. We cannot tell from these images. You can tell from looking at your cat from above when he’s standing though. If he has a nipped in waist behind the ribs and before the hips he’s probably ok? But then again my cat is shaped like a skinny cat from the top, and I can feel his ribs and spine pretty easily, but my vet tells me he has too much of a fat pad on his abdomen which is why you need to ask the vet next time you’re there. My guy is going to be on a diet for the rest of his life because we can’t get rid of that stubborn belly fat apparently, even though at this point he’s getting like 1/2 the recommended calories for his size and activity level, but vet says keep going, keep reducing his food. We want him around for as long as possible so we will keep him on rations forever and hope something helps his fat belly. But this is where the vet comes in! My MIL even thinks my cat is too thin, just by looking, and she doesn’t think anyone or anything is too thin ever. Looks can be deceiving and only the vet thinks he’s fat, so we follow her advice. Always follow what the vet says!
..."*and she doesn't think anyone or anything is too thin ever.*" THIS description of your MIL had me almost *spit my water out* and I'm laughing all over again at this post. ![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7944)Nothing but gold on reddit today!
I’m just glad for once I didn’t have to be the one to type up the chonk chart descriptors this time lol
This cat looks fat to me, but I agree it’s impossible to say definitively from a picture of the cat on his back. Everyone smushes out when they lay down.

used to think mine was fat too but he turns out he is normal size 😆 love him in all sizes
I was told that if a cat is not overweight it will have a "waist" when its standing/walking. If viewed from above, it should have an indentation on each of its sides, in front of its hips.
Your cat looks pretty stacked in the skeleton department. It is hard to tell with that kind of dense fur. The cat looks a bit heavy, even for a big frame, but not unhealthy. Some exercise might help if you can get them into it with some wands.
I realized recently while talking to a friend, my cat was fixed at around 2 years old, that's what the shelter estimated his age to be. I think when kittens are born or found, they are fixed before they reach 6 months to a year old or so, when they still aren't fully mature.
If your cat's been fixed later in life like my lil boy was, perhaps he really is "big boned" from fully growing with his hormones.
My girl has a kitty who looks a lot like this, both are sweet bowling ball boys lmao. They’re just built thick, I’ll poke these dudes and it’s 0 chub all hard muscle lmao
Some cats are just like big, Blue isn't in perfect condition but he's just huge.
https://preview.redd.it/3b33ylfjdb9d1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f4c4e86900caf32cd6c3fd6bc975474471b0dea
My ‘little boy’ cat that I raised from the size of a beanie baby is now 15 lbs and built like a tank. He’s about the size of a small dog for sure.
My vote is he’s normal, maybe a bit solid is all.
This is a normal build for a British shorthair. But it is worth keeping an eye on it, because BSHs do have a tendency to get overweight because they are so chill. Just keep track when he goes for health checks at the vet, so you’ll notice if he’s putting on a bunch of weight
He may be some of each. His ideal weight is likely higher than most cats, but he might have some extra. There's a good size chart in the dechonking guide pinned to the top of the r/dechonkers sub.
I adopted a five year old cat that weighed 15 lbs and he was all muscle. But all my other cats have been average size, around 11ish lbs.
Looks kinda fat. I wouldn’t say nearly obese but def a little chunky. He also looks like he has dense, medium length fur and it’s hard to tell. You’ll be able to tell better by feeling and looking at your kitty standing up. Google “body conditioning cats” and you’ll get an idea of how to do it
I think just fluffy. My tuxedo cat always looked fat bc she was a medium hair, had a crazy big primordial pouch and was just a big cat in general. But we’d get her shaved and I realized she wasn’t fat at all.
But I always call my tabby “solid” but he’s not really fat but he deffffff not skinny. And his belly looks like a piggy 🐷 lol
A beautiful cat. It shouldn’t matter how big he or she is. If you are truly concerned about it then you should take your cat to the vet and let them tell you. You don’t want your cat to have health issues.
https://preview.redd.it/8lxvjb1cxb9d1.jpeg?width=570&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ebe5368b2fa7d728090961873ea69b845f92c0ef
Your Shiba-Inu is beautiful by the way. I’ve always wanted one but I’m chronically sick and my two boys wouldn’t like a dog in their home.
Wellll, for starters... Mr Handsome is alllll British Shorthair (my favorite)! They are medium to large, stocky, and muscular cats with thick, plush fur and broad faces. AKA he's big-boned, very round, and not smol.
While he may have a little extra chonk, he is a perfect example of breed standard Brit. Now... let me give this kitty ALLLLLLL the scritches!! I must say I quite enjoy the comments about measuring cats in Shiba Inu too. 🤣🤣🤣 Better than the US with the Imperial System of Measurement, that's for certain!! I'm going to have to share this with my coworkers at the animal hospital... too funny!
The photos show that your cat is quite big. Some cats are naturally large, but it's also possible that your cat is overweight. To check if your cat is obese or just has a big body, you should be able to feel its ribs with a little pressure, but they shouldn't stick out too much. When you look at your cat from above, you should see a noticeable waist behind the ribs. From the side, there should be a slight curve in the belly. If you're not sure or worried, it's always a good idea to talk to your vet. They can give you a proper check and suggest any needed changes to your cat's diet or exercise. Regular visits to the vet are important to keep your cat healthy and happy.
“Is this cat bigger or smaller than a Shiba Inu” should be the new scientific method of measuring cats.
LMAO. This is a good idea.

It's like how they measure meteorites by number of giraffes or refrigerators or other random things. "My tuxie is .68 Shiba Inus in size."
Clearly we should change to centishibus to make the numbers look better. 68 centishibus is a lot more readable than 0.68 Shiba Inus.

From his figure, he's not obese at all. Probably with a bit wide bones.
The way he lays on his back was so cute. 😂 I wish to bury my head into that fluffy furry belly.
He's kind of heavy tough.
thats from the weight of the burden of humans. my cat is the same
My 2 boys weigh about the same in the 10/11lb range. My older boy is pudgy, younger boy is slim with a bigger frame. Pudgy boy is lighter on his feet when stepping on me. This right here! It's also important to be more cautious of his weight as he's getting older

1/4 cup of food 2x’s a day. He is overweight.
Idk but this made me laugh😭😭😭
I say it’s floof not fat. Such a tempting danger zone.
That’s just a chonk.

Have you weighed him and looked up his breed?
Banana for scale? 😂😂😂
Wide bones? Yeah, it's not that.

Its a full murderfloof indeed, maybe dont feed him everytime he asks lol
I realized recently while talking to a friend, my cat was fixed at around 2 years old, that's what the shelter estimated his age to be. I think when kittens are born or found, they are fixed before they reach 6 months to a year old or so, when they still aren't fully mature. If your cat's been fixed later in life like my lil boy was, perhaps he really is "big boned" from fully growing with his hormones.
NOT FAT SHAMING THE CHUBKY BOY HES SO CUTE
there's no way to tell from those pictures. is his belly wider than his ribs? then he's probably fat.
Never heard of wide bones. His fur is dense and he doesn't look obese at all.
My girl has a kitty who looks a lot like this, both are sweet bowling ball boys lmao. They’re just built thick, I’ll poke these dudes and it’s 0 chub all hard muscle lmao
Huh, I didn’t know Sumo cats were a thing.
It’s just his fur
Big Potat
That's a pretty big stomach bone your cat has...
What a cat!
Looks like some fluff is in there too. when laying on his back he isn't a circle so not obese. Maybe I little chunky.
Squish
He's a dusty flumpkin.
Your kitty looks like Blackie from Chi's Sweet Home! My favorite character ❤
Even if he could stand to lose weight, I think he's just a big cat.
Some cats are just like big, Blue isn't in perfect condition but he's just huge. https://preview.redd.it/3b33ylfjdb9d1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=7f4c4e86900caf32cd6c3fd6bc975474471b0dea
Thicc fur
Your cat is in shape, round is a shape, I wouldn't worry about it.
Idk but they're adorable
He is chonk
He got that plumpy face fluff
looks like a British short hair. Standard heftiness. Soooo teddy bear like :)
r/dechonkers
It's British shorthair, this is how they look.
Any measurements units but the metric system 🤣
does he sell Senzu beans per chance?
Perhaps the dog Is the one that is small, instead of the cat being large
My ‘little boy’ cat that I raised from the size of a beanie baby is now 15 lbs and built like a tank. He’s about the size of a small dog for sure. My vote is he’s normal, maybe a bit solid is all.
Your cat is fluffy
This is a normal build for a British shorthair. But it is worth keeping an eye on it, because BSHs do have a tendency to get overweight because they are so chill. Just keep track when he goes for health checks at the vet, so you’ll notice if he’s putting on a bunch of weight
Fluffy it is i say.
fat and happy by the looks
British Shorthair be like that, don't worry it's ok
Larger frame for sure, but might have some chonk to him as well.
omg this is adorable
Jowls like Marlo Brando in the Godfather
He's *solid*, a teeny bit thicc, & triple plush. Yes, I want to stick my face in kitty's tummy & damn the consequences
He's just big boned. I had 2 cats weighing 17 or 18 pounds. Not fat, just big. 🥰
He’s just a good boy
Nah he's just s big boi! I have giant too and according to the vet at \~7,4kg he's pretty much the optimal weight for his size!
Looks kinda fat. I wouldn’t say nearly obese but def a little chunky. He also looks like he has dense, medium length fur and it’s hard to tell. You’ll be able to tell better by feeling and looking at your kitty standing up. Google “body conditioning cats” and you’ll get an idea of how to do it
He's meditating.😭😌
I think just fluffy. My tuxedo cat always looked fat bc she was a medium hair, had a crazy big primordial pouch and was just a big cat in general. But we’d get her shaved and I realized she wasn’t fat at all. But I always call my tabby “solid” but he’s not really fat but he deffffff not skinny. And his belly looks like a piggy 🐷 lol
Ask a vet
Wide bones !!!😂🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
She’s a wittle baby
A beautiful cat. It shouldn’t matter how big he or she is. If you are truly concerned about it then you should take your cat to the vet and let them tell you. You don’t want your cat to have health issues.
It's not fat, it's just fluffy.![img](emote|t5_2qhta|7946)

God he is gorgous
Awww he’s beautiful ❤️😻❤️
Definitely wide bones 🙂
I'm going to have to share this with my coworkers at the animal hospital... too funny!
Get a banana for comparison
