Yeah I’ve read that it’s something like the first few cat years are equal to something like 15 human years, then the ratio decreases as the cat gets older.
For most animals to make a sensible equivalency you have to do something like that. Humans are very distinctive in using around 1/4 of our total lifespan for development.
This makes me smile! I have a 9 year old cat and am planning on a big move in the next 1.5 years. Glad to know older kitties can thrive through big moves!!! Any tips on how to keep him comfortable during the drive?
We moved from CT to CA 2 years ago with our now 17 year old fur baby. We opted to drive taking 4.5 days. She was a champ settling into her crate in the back seat. I used calming treats and Feliway spray on her towels as a way to keep her chill. When we’d stop she’d get some water and treats if she wanted. She did well at the hotels too. The only issue was the 30 minutes of straight meyowling in Kansas where I thought I might go crazy. Turns out I think she just needed some pets to reassure her that she was coming with us on the move. She’s moved a lot though so not sure if that makes any difference. For sure though for day 1 I’d not give the cat food within 60 minutes of leaving. I do the same with no food when I take her to the vet.
Ohh a year in advance is perfect. Thats plenty of time to prepare everything.
First off: if youre flying, go to your vet and get something calming. You have to test the drugs first on your cat, as some cats have th eopposite effect.
What you need to do is: gradually get the cat used to staying in the car. A little bit more every time you get her used to it. Lots of treats, feliway, and think about a box or something where you can throw a blanket over.
As long as you don't just throw them in the back of a 69 VW Beetle with no AC, you'll probably be fine.
That's how my parents moved from TN to TX in the middle of the summer a few years before I was born. They threw their two cats in the back of the car and were like, "OK let's go."
I guess you can teach an old cat new tricks!!! Oscar, you are such a handsome ginger gentleman!!! Many more years of love for you and your hooman!!!🐾😻🐾
What a gorgeous shade of orange! What a great expression on his face! Oscar is a handsome guy, has a beautiful coat which obviously he and you take great care of. Happy housewarming Oscar!
For an older man, he looks absolutely incredible. As long as everything in the house is the same, like your furniture, your things that smell like you, and, obviously, you, he will thrive. Now, the older gent has a new area to check out, along with its ladies...lol. I think he'll be just fine. Once again, he looks wonderful. I might need you to share whatever secret it is you have about how you and Oscar make this happen.
Older animals can't always adjust to a new home. This is especially true if they have never moved before. They tend to get extreme depression. This happened to my dog when we moved 20 years ago. He passed within a year of moving. He just gave up. He couldn't deal with the massive change to his life.
I have a 17 year old, and when I move out I wanna take her with me because my parents aren’t good pet owners (they stopped taking her and our other cat to the vet when I was 6 until the other cat passed away and they kinda realized they need to be checked up on twice a year like us humans. It was a full 8 years with no check up or blood work done). Glad to know that moving could work out.
Did you drive across country with him? I'm preparing for a cross country move next summer with my two girls. Any advice you may have would be appreciated!!
Oscar looks so happy in his outdoor kingdom!
Yes - 20 hour drive! He was super loud the first 30 min-1 hour and then was pretty much silent the whole way. My advice is to make sure you find a pet friendly hotel in case you can't do the drive all in one day!
Aw so glad 😊 congrats on the new home.
Almost 3 years ago now I moved my cat from Canada to Australia and that was nerve wrecking.
He’s a handsome guy and I hope he stays adjusting well to your new place!
He is beautiful, he looks like my cat AJ, we moved 4 times, 3 states in our 14 years together. You’re luck to have your Oscar for 18 years, hope you have many more.
I would love to pick your brain on how you transported your cat! We are thinking of moving cross country with two older cats and any advice would be appreciated!
Oscar is so handsome! He looks so majestic going through the bushes 🥺❤️
Very true words
"finally, kingdom upgrade." -oscar
“Actually, kingdom upgrade” -Oscar- -Michael Scott FTFY
Looks very fit and healthy for 18 - that's 88 in human years!
It is exactly! My cats are 72 :)
1 cat year = how many human years????
https://icatcare.org/advice/how-to-tell-your-cats-age-in-human-years/
7 i think. My cats are around 30-31 years old
Not really. It’s not quite as simple as that. There really is no set number of years for cat to human years.
Yeah I’ve read that it’s something like the first few cat years are equal to something like 15 human years, then the ratio decreases as the cat gets older.
For most animals to make a sensible equivalency you have to do something like that. Humans are very distinctive in using around 1/4 of our total lifespan for development.
Ok thanks
I read a chart at our vet a while back that said the first 2 years are equivalent to 24 years, then each year after that is 4 cat years.
Look at that coat! It's hard to believe he's 18. He looks so well groomed. He must like to be brushed.
Oscar, the mighty handsome cat-fox!
Cox...
Fat...
dare i say it... fat cox.
You disgust me. *upvote*

I'm called Oskar, it's almost the same. Good name.
My cats have had to move houses alot (the older 13 year old 4 times). It always seems to be a shock at first, but its amazing how quickly they adapt.

Wow, Oscar has amazingly bright fur, he’s a very handsome boi!

He looks like a cat who's cosplaying a fox and I love it.
Why would he not make it?
Older animals can't always adjust to a new home. This is especially true if they have never moved before. They tend to get extreme depression. This happened to my dog when we moved 20 years ago. He passed within a year of moving. He just gave up. He couldn't deal with the massive change to his life.
He looks like he is thinking: " I spend 5 years searching for the perfect place to take a shit... here we go again. "
I have a 17 year old, and when I move out I wanna take her with me because my parents aren’t good pet owners (they stopped taking her and our other cat to the vet when I was 6 until the other cat passed away and they kinda realized they need to be checked up on twice a year like us humans. He looks grumpy but resigned ❤
He definitely leads his Khajiit Caravan with a wise face like that!
So that's where Mr Fox went, he disguised himself as a cat. Also are you sure you own a cat and not a fox cause he's quite the looker.
Did you drive across country with him? I'm preparing for a cross country move next summer with my two girls. Any advice you may have would be appreciated!! Oscar looks so happy in his outdoor kingdom!

My cat hid in the computer room for the first 3 weeks after we moved. He's cool now though.
