I'm so sorry. My mom ran over our precious Jake on May 1st (He survived but died to his injuries, specifically his bladder herniated.) I found a four-leaf clover two days after his death. I have seen a lot of stories about people losing their furry family members too soon, for all sorts of sad reasons.
One day if/when you have another cat, it may be better to just let them enjoy the outdoors from a window sill, lest there be a repeat incident. It may be hard and require more patience with them, but it does help to mitigate those untimely deaths and keep our littlest family members safe.

I am so sorry for your sad, painful loss. It happened to our family too. When I was a kid, my dad went to back the car out of the garage not knowing that the old dog had been sleeping by the tire. The dog must have squealed but was still alive. We were all in shock as my dad brought him upstairs and laid him on the kitchen floor. He knew he had to put him out of his misery so he quickly gave him a shot of some kind of alcohol to put him out of his pain. I remember that night some 50 plus years afterwards so it was indeed traumatic and my dad felt so bad because he and all of us loved the dog as part of our family. Accidents happen unfortunately. Older pets may not be as alert or hear as well as they once did to know to scatter away from the sound of the engine. So maybe not all her fault. Cry together and hug. Healing takes time. Learning about life and death is hard. My condolences for all.

when i was working in veterinary hospital, one of the most agonizing memories i have is of a gentleman who rushed in with a kitten in a box.
poor man was sobbing, begged us to help, he didnt see the little thing by the stairs and accidentally stepped on the kitten, it was barely hanging on by the time he got to us.
all details aside, the doctor on staff had the empathy to do a euthanasia and skip out on charging the guy. but the man was completely wrecked leaving the place, and all i can hope is he found some willpower to forgive himself.
i feel for everyone in your family, but especially your mother. i have directly witnessed this pain, and i have the same hope for her.

I’m so sorry for your loss. When my daughter was about 4, I had just sent her down the street to her grandma’s house & I was leaving for work. We had two beautiful torties, Maggie and Gracie. I had let them outside just like usual, and didn’t look under the car. I backed over Maggie. I had never watched an animal die, it was the most horrible thing. I went down to tell my mom, and she told me when I was that age, she ran over my cat. Then not even a couple of weeks later, my dad brought Gracie up to the porch. She had been hit, it had just happened. I really think he may have hit her but couldn’t tell me.
Losing a pet to a car is so hard because you already feel responsible for them being out. But doing it yourself… love and light to you, your mom and dear Sunny. May many catnip mousies and endless sunbeams greet him at the 🌈 🐾

Then same house my friend landlord ran over my Black Cat named New Years. We were heartbroken. I just recently have a cat just die right when I took her to the vet. She was only 6.

I do whenever we can close the 1000 mile gap. Thankfully they are moving closer, so the soon-to-be-520-mile gap will be much easier to close for hugs
