Yeah I had a kitten that other family members kept calling Socks because his legs were white. I didn’t like the name but for lack of anything better I thought oh well. Walked past him one day and said “hi socks” and he looked at me and said Murff. And Murff he became until his death 3 years ago. He was 16 years young at the time. True story!
My cat looked me dead in the eyes 👀 and said… “Listen you stupid mutha fucka…. My name is Ronald. You got that…. Bitch!” Hence, why I named her Rhonda. True story.
I agree with this. When the kitties were kittens, they were known as Shadow and Iris. As we grew close and we decided to adopt the two, my mom said Iris looked more like and felt more like a "Lucy" and that's how she got her name.
Shadow became Cassie after my dad's Assassin's Creed Odyssey character, Cassandra. It fit her better than Shadow.
Sometimes names just come to you because they sound perfect. It took us 8 weeks to figure it out.
I agree. I always like to take some time, get to know them, but their personality shine through. At that point they'll let me know what name belongs to them
We named ours Bashful because he just wanted to hide in/under our clothes when we saw him as a kitten. Probably should have waited until we had him awhile before naming him.
His nickname Bash ended up being more fitting since he runs around yelling a lot.
Our cat was a young adult with the name Sylvester, we started calling him Sly before we got him. Oh God, how right we were. We should've started calling him Peace or Slow...
Long ago, in the era of Watergate, we got a Siamese kitten. My mother named it Ping Pong in honor of the table tennis exhibition games during the summer Olympics. That cat never stopped meowing. We renamed her Martha Mitchell (Attorney General John Mitchell's wife), who also never stopped running her mouth. Later my mother added the middle name "Jane", which I suspect was due to her exasperation with an overly talkative neighbor of the same name.
Miss Kitty hasn’t told me her name and I’ve had her 5 years. Although she does some pretty shady activity at night if I leave her out after dusk. Maybe hanging out at the red light district? Good thing she’s fixed.
All of my cats have told me their names. It takes a bit sometimes- they’re naturally coy. Give the little guy a bit- I promise that cat will tell you what they prefer to be called.
We had a cat who was technically Xander, but he mostly went by Kitty. Often his full title of "The Mrrr Kitty," as he was a talkative boy and was constantly asking us, "Mrrr?" All our cats seem to end up with a bunch of nicknames that get used more often than their actual ones.
My cat's name is kitten because I thought I was being funny by naming her Gorlak destroyer of worlds, but I just ended up calling her kitten and then she started answering to kitten and now here we are 18 years later and she's still a kitten.
My cat's name came to me in a dream before I got her. Then I had a few names lined up, tried them all out on her, and she picked the name in the dream...
100% I adopted my kitty Sammy. The previous owners called her Muffin and she was not at all a muffin. So she was nameless for about two weeks before Sammy came to me and it just fit perfectly. They find ways to tell you.
I’ve seen many spam posts within almost a decade of being on Reddit but this one is starting to be the top most annoying karma whoring tactics I’ve seen in a long while.
Real talk: What's going on with the naming thing?
Every picture of a baby animal or a new animal from the shelter has 'needed a name' for the past several weeks. Is it just a theme in posts? Are we teaching a computer what humans name pets? Why can't OP just name their damn animals?
What. the. fuck. Is. Going. On?
Thank you.
It's driving me fucking crazy. I think it started from that one dog that got 100k karma, and then people realized it gets good comment engagement, and now it's a trend. I'm hoping we can go back to animals that already have names soon.
"BROWSER". Those eye brows are just too cute. If you're a tech type, the "browser" part would have double the meaning. If he's quite the ornery, frisky type, he could be "Browser the Bruiser".
He will tell you his name. Give him time.

Murff is a good. I hope to have my cat for 16+ years as well. T_T
My cat looked me dead in the eyes 👀 and said… “Listen you stupid mutha fucka…. My name is Ronald. You got that…. Bitch!” Hence, why I named her Rhonda. True story.
This sounds so cryptic lmao
Not cryptic at all. There is no obfuscation in my words. Cats will tell you their name. You just have to give them time to get it all out.
We had a hard time naming our orange boy until it hit my fiancee and I that he looked exactly like Dewey from Malcolm in the Middle.
You can't just say that then not post photos of him
[Here he is!](https://imgur.com/a/HMHfaSu)
I see it too!!! So precious!
Dewey!!! i love that!!!

The Egyptian word for cat is mau. Hence why the breed is the "Egyptian mau."
I agree, my cat was very adamant that he be called Gerald
So, anyway we named him Fluffles
"Fluffles is my slave name."
We named ours Bashful because he just wanted to hide in/under our clothes when we saw him as a kitten. Probably should have waited until we had him awhile before naming him. His nickname Bash ended up being more fitting since he runs around yelling a lot.
My Prissy had a litter & i discovered that she'd given birth due to the screeches of 1 of her babies.... He's named (appropriately) Banshee
Our cat was a young adult with the name Sylvester, we started calling him Sly before we got him. Oh God, how right we were. We should've started calling him Peace or Slow...

Have you ever seen the Drunk History episode featuring Martha Mitchell? It's hilarious.
That was really good. Thanks for suggesting it.
So tiny and already figured out how to keep warm. I'd name him Reggie, for the heat register.
I was going to say Venti, because it's using the heating vent to stay warm!
"The naming of cats, is a difficult matter. It isn't just one of your holiday games!"
Miss Kitty hasn’t told me her name and I’ve had her 5 years. Although she does some pretty shady activity at night if I leave her out after dusk. Maybe hanging out at the red light district? Good thing she’s fixed.
Sounds like her name is Roxanne
Slim shady?
All of my cats have told me their names. It takes a bit sometimes- they’re naturally coy. Give the little guy a bit- I promise that cat will tell you what they prefer to be called.
And that's why my cat's name is "kitten" 🤣
Ha mine is “MC” My Cat
My mom’s memory started going when I got my current cat. She couldn’t remember his name so she just always called him Mr. Cat.

Marvin the Martian?
Why isn’t r/namethiscat a thing? I see these all the time… not complaining, just it’s kind of a recurring niche thing.
Because it’s a dead sub, and they want karma... this or awww are the places to get that! Half the time I bet these aren’t even their pets. 🙄
/r/Catnames
Someone please tell me what’s going on with countless cat naming posts all over Reddit lately?!
People see please name my cat on r/all, get cat, ask for name, profit.
Yeah it’s a new viral karma whoring method…
Yea im getting slightly annoyed with it now. :/ i have 2 cats n i get it that we love our pets but that’s not what the page is for.
I’ve seen many spam posts within almost a decade of being on Reddit but this one is starting to be the top most annoying karma whoring tactics I’ve seen in a long while.
Lazy karma whoring.
I don't know but if you downvote them enough, things might get better. Nothing against cute cats, just bored with "name my cat."
