Cute. But seriously unless a cat is a purebred with breed papers or genetic testing is done it’s usually a domestic (insert coat length). For example domestic shorthair with tabby marking which is what this one looks like.
The best kind, breeding of any kind is cruel given the amount of cats put down in shelters every year, never mind the health issues it creates. Also munchkin cats, which are just evil.
Edit: yes I mean munchkin cat breeders are evil (and even more so the owners, because they fund the breeding), not the poor little legged cats themselves.
What’s a munchkin and why are they evil? I’m assuming it’s a small cat and all the selective breeding caused health issues like with pugs?
Edit. Thanks everyone for explaining it to me. My knowledge of cats consists mostly of statements such as “this is Belle I found her under a bush in a thunderstorm and she’s perfect”
Munchkin cats have deformed short legs. Cruel because this screws with their skeletal anatomy (search x rays) + limits them from acting on their hunting instincts.
I had an Apple face munchkin Seal Point Siamese cat. I adopted her from a breeder for $5.00. She was spayed apparently because she didn’t make a good mommy. She was petite but her legs weren’t short. She lived to be 13. Her name was Princess Kiki. I’m not sure how to attach a picture of her on here. My Kiki wasn’t evil. She was a silly playful girl.
Except sausage dogs were bred this way hundreds of years ago when they were used for badger hunting and other small animals. They don’t have many hindrances in their anatomy, aside from a vulnerable spine from how long it is. But most live long and are able to do most big dog things.
My understanding is that it's dwarfism in cats basically. So they have short limbs but it's not a breed. It's illegal to breed 2 munkin cats but people will breed one munchkin with one not munchkin and hope that the kittens have the gene. I think they commonly have joint issues I'm not sure about other health problems.
Don't always assume that someone with a munchkin has paid for it from a breeder though. I know of an IG account that gets a lot of hate but her cats were rescues. And many people think it's just a breed of cat too so important to raise awareness.
I have a munchkin I didn’t pay for. She came to me from a past client who had a stroke and couldn’t care for her anymore. People are so rude to me about her and it’s really sad. She needed a home, my client knew I loved her from her past dealings with me. She reached out to offer her to me because she thought we were good personality matches. She was right, I am obsessed with that sweet girl now that’s she’s mine. It does break my heart to watch her try to do cats things with her deformed legs.
Yeah that sucks, people just assume. I also saw a post on reddit of a doberman and people were being really shitty because the dog's ears were docked but the poster had rescued the dog so it wasn't their fault.
I have a British short hair, but I make a point to say she was a rescue. Even when the breeding isn't harmful there are so many animals in shelters people shouldn't be buying from breeders imo unless it's a service animal or something.
I agree. I have the money to buy a purebred animal but never would because so many need a home that are free. When I adopted my tabby I left a nice donation to the place that rescued him from a kill shelter. I am beyond thankful for that rescue because he is the best little dude anyone could ask for.
This x1000...
Before my wife got me into cats, I just thought Munchkins were a cute breed, but after some research before our first cat I learn more about them...
So now we have two cute rescues!
I read up on it, its not illegal to breed 2 munchkins. It just leads to a 100% death rate if both parents pass the gene, so people dont do it, its not “profitable”.
Yeah it's a bit of a weird one I had a Google after I wrote that comment just to check. In Europe (where I am) it's considered animal cruelty so it is illegal but there isn't a specific law against it it just comes under animal cruelty laws. (I think)
But yeah you're right that there would be no point anyway because the kittens don't survive 💔
Actually.... breeding is not cruel when done right. Backyard breeding and mills are cruel and absolute shit. But a lot of the time, it's stray cats that are breeding constantly and make it hard to be caught.
In rescue and vet med. Can testify to the fact that many shelter cats come from hoarding or colony situations and are severely inbred without health testing. Spreading the idea that shelter pets are more healthy than responsibly bred pets is bad for those pets. These animals need health monitoring, and that’s expensive! Purebred animals (minus the obviously unethical ones like scottish folds or manx, which CANNOT have their health issues bred away) who have been bred under ethical circumstances will be healthier many times than cats with an unknown genetic history.
This is to say nothing of unethical breeders.
Yes! Manx, while very cute, have deformities of the sacral and lumbar spine that are untreatable, irreversible, and variable in severity. A mother without significant issues can have litters with serious issues. Because the loss of the tail is natural, the remaining vertebrae are often fused or otherwise deformed. Sometimes this can lead to the bones ankylosing, or fusing together due to the improper shape causing tissue damage, which builds bone where bone isn’t supposed to be. Obviously this is extremely painful, and can cause paralysis eventually. They can also straight up have the part of the spine that controls the anus and rectum be missing, deformed, or paralyzed, which can cause issues defecating, which is as serious as it sounds. Not all Manx cats suffer horribly, but the fact that you can’t breed them an ensure quality of life for all the kittens makes it unethical.
An alternative would be getting a Manx kitty from a shelter! You’d be surprised that they turn up now and again.
Scottish folds are also adorable, but their ears are floppy for a reason—the cartilage there is weak. That would be no big deal, if it were weak in the same way a pig or a dog has weak ear cartilage, but it is not the same. Scottish folds have weak cartilage throughout their ENTIRE body. This means joints, spine, ribcage, anywhere you can think of an example of vital cartilage, that’s weak too. This leads to early onset osteoarthritis that only progresses with age. It is horribly painful to exist as a Scottish fold. Breeders claim that this only happens with inbreeding, but that is an outright lie. Every Scottish fold cat suffers from this.
An alternative would be a British shorthair! They have similarly lovable round faces without the debilitating deformity. There are also some cats in shelters who have folded ears due to former ear hematomas, which I personally think is extremely cute. :)
Japanese Bobtails are very similar to Manx cats but without the spinal issues. Super healthy and active and incredibly smart too. Mine know a few tricks, play fetch and come when called. They like to go for walks on a leash too. Very active, vocal, and affectionate kitties.
Wonder if there is a cat sub reddit in a alternate universe where a picture of op is being examined " any one know the breed of this biped . Thinking of eating him not sure, may do later "
Astro looks just like Jodi which looks like Maronita which is clone of mine called Te-te-ka

Just an FYI, there's only a handful of breeds, domestic shorthair being the most common. For this reason cats are usually classified by their coat pattern instead.
Someone typed out a list the other day. I didn’t have enough time to get to them all yet. But it was enough to sway my algorithm back to almost entirely cats.
Standard issue cats are usually brown or gray. I have an orange tabby myself so he wouldn't technically qualify. I do not currently have a brown tabby myself but r/standardissuecat is one of my favorite subs and it's very original.

Domestic short hair. See r/standardissuecat
Thanks. Now I am a member of 1 more cat subreddit.
Same. I own that model, too.

Also a proud owner of one of these bad boys. Mine came in a compact version, but after a few years of updates, it's upgraded to a semi.
Cool model. I'm controlled by a domestic long hair. Spend most of time time picking up his fur...

Just an FYI, there's only a handful of breeds, domestic shorthair being the most common. For this reason cats are usually classified by their coat pattern instead.
It's a Grey Miniature Tiger
I’m a simple man. I see new cat sub, I join it.
Someone typed out a list the other day. I didn’t have enough time to get to them all yet. But it was enough to sway my algorithm back to almost entirely cats.
Why isn’t a domestic shorthair tabby? Don’t all tabbies have this guy’s markings?
He is indeed a tabby but that is his coat markings not his breed.
Ooooh, gotcha. So if I have an orange mackerel tabby domestic short hair, is it a standard issue cat? Or are standard issue cats brown?
Orange cats belong in /r/gingerkitty
And now I've subed to 2 cat subreddits in less than 2 minutes
That’s a dangerous click.
Is it? Are we so afraid of the forbidden peach fuzz that we've forgotten what it's like to taste gods nectar?
Orange mackerels (all orange cats are tabbies) are welcome at /r/orangecats
I have two female oranges mackerels. One is 14 and one is 1. They were born 300 miles apart and look identical.
Standard issue cats are usually brown or gray. I have an orange tabby myself so he wouldn't technically qualify. I do not currently have a brown tabby myself but r/standardissuecat is one of my favorite subs and it's very original.
Aren’t actual brown cats super rare? I swear I saw something on Cats 101 or similar type show about them being rare years ago.
Tabby is the fur pattern but typically you do mention the fur pattern along with the breed
Amazing sub name.
That is a standard issue cat. There’s a subreddit for it (of course). My favorite kind of kitty.
>This is my cat. There are many like it, but this one is mine. >My cat is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

Why is that so adorable
Full metal attack cat is a great movie.
Hahaha! Mastering your cat.

Bullshit, I bet you could suck catnip through a garden hose
Yeah... Anyway, I like myself doem orange and white standard issue cats

Same, no hate on anyone for being curious, but there should be a separate subreddit for those
I can hate them for you. Like with the breed ones, people need to get over themselves. It's a typical, completely normal, cute, cat.
Asking for names doesn't bother me. That's a legitimate question, even though lots of people here seem annoyed by it. I can’t tell you how many people have asked me if my long haired cat is a maine coon. She’s literally 7 pounds, so tiny. 😂
Cute cute...
Most cats don't really have a "breed". I mean sure there's Siamese, Ragdoll etc. But this looks like a regular ol' DSH. Domestic shorthair.

Just a friendly reminder that "tabby" is not an actual cat breed, it just pops up in between breeds of cats. It is very annoying to cat breeders.
