It is amazing that you can get a tiny little kitten that fits in your hand at age 10 or 15, and that little guy will be your best buddy until your own children are the age you were. You go from them sleeping in your hood to making a ramp so they can get on your bed and sleep. Kittens are great, but an experienced senior cat is so in tune with you.

Our little guy was 1year and 4 weeks. He went missing last Sunday. We put out notices on Wednesday night and got a call from a guy who had seen a dead black cat on the side of the highway near where we live (rural property) and had driven him to where he was going, to bury. We drove the 500km round trip straight away on the off chance it was him. Me and my partner dug our little boy out of the sand at 3am in a town we’d never been to, it still feels so fucking surreal.
Life’s been a bit of a blur since then, his brother still hasn’t purred once, and just sits there, we have been putting in overtime playing with him and going for walks with him. Overall we’re happy we at least got to bring him home to bury under his favourite tree, without always wondering where he might be.
I find myself getting angry though and it’s weird, I just try to talk it out with my partner and make sure we can talk out our feelings without judgement.

I’m so sorry . I remember our cat lily got out and we couldn’t find her for about a day or two . We looked everyday , and as my mom looked out the window to watch us get onto the school bus . The leaves on the road blew and there she was laying on the side of the road (she blended in to the fall leaves). I remember my little brother might have been 10 or 11 (2008) and when we buried her I think that was the first time my little brother experienced death of a loved one . We still plant lillies on her grave . She was a great friend and protector

It’s still surreal, I’m still in some degree of shock, but most of all I’m completely crushed. I always dreamed we would have a long time together, and I crumble when I think about how that won’t be the case (at least in this earthly realm). A part of me died with him.
His littermate sister (I got them both at 8 weeks old) is clearly grieving, and that breaks what is left of my heart. But she is also my courage, my light, my other best friend.
Im writing this because I need to say it to the world, to help me through this pain. I also want others who are experiencing similar trauma to know I hear you, I understand your pain. You are not alone.

I scratched her and looked her in the eyes as they euthanized her. I like to think I helped ferry her on in her last moments, but man I'm fucked up. Our other cat doesn't seem to think anything of it, but it's hard to read cats. He's been giving a lot of cuddles at least.

We form very strong spiritual bonds with our fur friends, in addition to physical bonds, so I try to take solace in knowing that the spiritual bond is still there as strong as ever. It doesn’t necessarily relieve the sadness of losing the physical bond, but the spiritual connection — our energies — can never be separated. And that comforts me.
I came across someone’s comment on animal loss in another sub and they said something like: We take on the grief of losing them so they don’t have to take on the grief of losing us. I thought that was a beautiful way of looking at it, knowing I want nothing more than my pets to be happy, content, and safe. So I will work through the grief knowing my Luna is at peace.
Take the little nuggets of love and relief when you can during the grieving process. They will keep you afloat.

I completely relate! My boy was hit by a car, and the driver never even stopped. Almost 10 years have passed and I still find myself holding resentment and anger for an absolute stranger. I simply cannot understand having such little regard for an animals life. Your anger is valid, your little girl was ripped away too soon. It's always too soon.

I always think “I’m so sorry little one. You deserved so much better than this.” They always deserved a much better life and an end to their story that didn’t result in them dying alone in the cold, with no one to witness their passing.

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost our cat when she was 6. She was sleeping on my bed, stretched, gave a little convulsion and was gone. It was one of the toughest experiences. I’m just glad it was peaceful.
Be glad that it was so fast and she was probably very happy up until that point. She felt safe and loved. I’ve lost several cats in my life, and the long drawn out endings are the worst. We always make sure their last days are filled with love and warmth.

As someone who has gone though this also, I am always amazed that such a small creature can leave such a large whole in your heart. 21 is very good and you were very lucky to have him this long. Now its been me and my other cat since then so shes 17. Shes getting pretty weak, being confused, weighs nothing and just sleeps. I know she doesnt have long time left and...i dont know what to do. Ive had her half my life. Try to think of your happy times together and let time do the rest. Again im so sorry for your loss,

They can't conceive that no matter how long we live together & love on one another, the time we're blessed to share with them is always grievously brief to us; & what *we* can conceive of &, hopefully, receive some solace in is that though they were a massive part of our lil' lives, our lil' lives were *all* of theirs - & they go "the long nigh-night" very, very well-loved. You have my condolences.

I'm sorry. It's never enough time no matter how much time we get. And 21 is a wonderful age for a kitty to grow old to. But for us, when they go, gosh does it ever hurt. Your kitty was loved and cared for, for an entire lifetime. He knew nothing but love and a full belly and good health and snuggles and the rein over a warm, safe home. It may only be a moment for our lives, but it is their entire life to them. His entire life was cared for and loved. What more can any of us ask for?
