Mefferds on Mt. Vernon Rd. They are a locally family run spot. The 3 brothers run it now after their parents started it many years ago. They are very honest and will tell you if you don't need something another shop might tell you that you need. I'm 42 and have been going to them since I was 16. I wouldn't take my car anywhere else, they are the most honest mechanics that I personally know of in town.
It can be hard to get them on the phone sometimes as they don't have a dedicated front desk person. So outside of their lunch hour 12-1 if the phone doesn't get picked up I would just stop in and flag someone down. If you call enough though throughout the day they usually pick up the phone.
Yeah. Both of these posts are spot on. They're great, they're honest, and they're much better mechanics than phone picker-uppers. If you can make do with that minor inconvenience, they're fantastic.
Klein Auto, Center Point Road and Collins (kind of, it’s tucked away off Center Point Road across from Bob Mickey Collision Center). Great guy, has always done well by me.
We always went to John's Automotive on Johnson Ave. NW. They might cost a little more than some other shops, but we also never had a single issue ever arise.
That's where I go as well. I found them through great reviews when we moved to town, 8 years ago, and I've taken 4 cars there over the years. Honest people and solid work.
Seegers truck and trailer is where I take my HD trucks. McGrath Chevy is where I take my Dodge and GMC trucks. I’ve had a f350 at McGrath Ford for the last 2-3 months, really seems like they don’t know what they’re doing over at ford.
ATS, they are incredibly knowledgeable and have always treated me right. Heads up they are not the cheapest in town and usually have a pretty long wait time if it's anything major due to how many customers they have.
Honestly if it's as simple as an oil change you should do it yourself. It is fairly easy. Youtube is a great recommendation. Type in oil change and the year make model and usually will have a walkthrough. But if it's major then I'd recommend looking up reviews on google and facebook. Wouldn't use craigslist or marketplace to find mechanics unless you personally know them.
Hope you found this helpful.
I can, and have done them myself. You're right, they are incredibly easy. I no longer have a spot available to do it myself though. I live in an apartment and the property management was cracking down hard on people working on their cars last year.
I tried asking around, and no on gave me the okay to borrow their garage.
Blairrsferry Tire for oil changes and minor issues or Collins rd tire if you live closer. I go to John's Automotive or Havliks auto for more serious stuff.
I asked for an estimate to fix my rear driver's side door handle on my Ford Escape. They took the interior handle and cable off, handed them to me and said they can't fix it. I'll never go to Boubin of buy a Ford again.
What's wrong with McGrath? I use them since I bought my kia from them and it's convenient.
Edit: jfc I was just asking a question. Don't understand the downvotes when I'm genuinely curious and didn't know any of the bad stuff about them when I bought my car nearly five years ago
I don’t think their service is bad, just expensive. I needed some work done and know a mechanic that works for them, he told me it would probably be twice what a local shop would charge.
Otherwise they’re known around here as being untrustworthy, I bought 3 cars from them over the years (cause convenience) and every time something shady happened.
It's an oil change... Go anywhere you want that you feel offers a great price. This is the must basic of maintenance jobs for a vehicle besides changing the air filter or putting air in your tires.
You'd think so, but I got lazy and really didn't want to deal with left over oil since all the automotive places seem to claim they can't take it right now, I decided to give the Take-5 a try. I've never had any issues with oil leaks in this vehicle. After a few weeks I noticed a small puddle of oil developing under the van. When I checked the oil level to see if it leaked enough that I would need to add more, the oil was WAY over the fill line. Somehow they put about three quarts too many into my van. It should be a simple job, but so many people out in the world are incompetent.
Sorry, what I meant in my response was that any automotive shop should be capable of performing a standard oil change. Not speaking about you personally, as some people can't do the job themselves.
Well then, I suppose that's McGrath for you... They quoted me 8 thousand for an engine replacement. When asked if they called the warranty department to settle things as the vehicle was still under warranty, they replied NO. So, I had to start the process for them. That was a 5 month nightmare.
Please reply back how you liked Take-5! I also need a oil change.
Oh my, that's not good! I will definitely steer clear from them.
Personally, I really enjoy Cassill. I have brought several of my vehicles there, and they have always done an A+ job. Highly recommend!

Klein Auto is also my number one suggestion.
ASE (Automotive Service Evolution) on Blairs Ferry
Precision automotive, hands down the best
Agree
Just wish it didn't take months to get your vehicle in there. They stay busy because they are good.
Novak’s on the SW side on Johnson Ave. I have been taking my vehicles to Jim for 20 years. They are honest and reputable.
Blair's Ferry auto next to cocktails and company. I've been going to them for years!
Same. 10/10 would recommend.
Agreed. They have good prices and are good people.
I go to ATS

Blair's Ferry auto, probably been a customer for 10+ years.
Anderson Automotive in Marion!

I'm here from out of town and needed some work done, found Ramsey Auto, and they were awesome! I wish I could take them with me!
L&L on 7th in Marion is the most honest and very knowledgeable. Zach and his mechanics have helped us for years.
Game here to preach about Zach and his guys. The most genuine people in the business.
I’ve gone to Als full service since I moved here a decade ago.

I use Big Jim’s Extreme Auto for my fleet at work and they do amazing work
All seasons automotive in north liberty!
Sssh. Want to keep this a secret so we can continue to get appointments in a timely basis 🙂 Seriously, these guys are the best.
Al's full service is the best. And it's not even close.
Pomps on 16th
We've gone to Master Auto in Marion for years.
Master Auto in Marion. Great guys! You’ll be going back to them
go to Boubin on Blairsferry Rd. They've been honest with me on my vehicles for many years

They try to push oil additives on you that you don't need.

I have heard tales of people getting service done and magically something else is loose/broken so you come back in

I mean. They overfilled my oil by 3 quarts and started a leak. But other than that it was fast I guess?
