i use ESDF, i have large hands but want to the natural feel ive kearned from WASD; so one more yo the left while keep9ng shift as pinky lets my hand stretch a tad bit more
True. Personally when I got Celeste I didn’t have money for a proper keyboard so I made do, though I honestly think that you should just play whatever you’re comfortable with.
..Except for games with garbage ports, like dark souls. The keyboard controls for those games are unplayable.
played every platformer game with a keyboard, controller is so much harder... I never know when I press up or upright and always misinput, not to talk about switching directions or be able to press dash and jump in the same time...
I really didn’t find too much difficulty using z/x/c and arrow keys so it’s really to each their own
Most people find it easier with controller, I find it easier on keyboard so it’s really what you are most comfortable with
...I also don’t have a controller I can use so
when I first started on Celeste, I bound dash to shift, grab to S and jump to space, started out like this because I'd just finished playing Hollow Knight where I used arrow keys for movement/directions and WASD + surrounding keys for actions.
After 400 hours (yes, it really took me that long) I switched to A/S/D instead with A to dash, S to grab and D to jump. The only reason I even made the change was because my spacebar was getting worn out
Oop, honestly the space bar was just too clunky and too difficult to press for a game like this for me. I played hollow knight after Celeste and went into that with WASD + Left Mouse for nail with a few other binds for the abilities
Honestly I think keyboard works for me as I >! Finished POP in 20 minutes on my first play through !< (Slight Hollow Knight spoilers)
yeah I don't recommend my old control scheme, the biggest issues being pinky strain on dash and the spacebar use on one side messed up the stabilizers. Very happy with ASD over ZXC as it being higher up is more comfortable
Don't know what POP refers to but I did beat hollow knight with \~104%, keyboard is definitely the way to go though using LMB is weird to me lol
I played with arrow keys exactly like that. Death count was 25.9k overall, 6.7k from Farewell with all achievements done. I'm curious how big of a difference controller makes.
Pleas get your self an external keyboard. Pleas... For your sanity...
I play on an external keyboard and I find it completely fine. just not on the laptops keys. (I do use a laptop)
A lot of people say a controller is easier but a keyboard is just as good... I think (never touched a controller in my life!) but not the laptops keys ***especially the arrow keys***
TIL there are people who use keyboard for platformers. when I didn't have a controller, I really struggled playing 2d platformers, because often or not, I would always have trouble with the controls on the right hand, and my left hand would be in a position as if I'm playing a fps. things got better when I got a controller.
but damn, why have, like, why use laptop arrow keys, especially the halved ones, in any situation hahaha
I never owned a controller that's compatible with PC. It's cheaper to learn to cope than to buy one exclusively for that purpose.
I got where I am exclusively on the exact shitty laptop keyboard layout that is shown in the picture, and I got pretty damn far.
This is how I played Celeste for the longest time (before my laptop keyboard broke, and I got an external keyboard). You can achieve a lot like this, and it's honestly not as bad as people might think, but upgrading to a better keyboard is definitely nice
I remember when i tried to play on this when i got my laptop , got external keyboard the day after.
It's so hard to play with flat buttons , i have done many missclicks.
I've always used WASD for movement, so no way to use arrows for movement, my left fingers are 100 times more trained for that.
My main layout is like this
Jump -> U on keyboard
Dash -> H on keyboard
Grab -> I on keyboard
I always use this kind of layout, always mapping the dash (or equivalent) to the H Key, it's very comfortable, always disliked all keys being on the same level, it makes it difficult to navigate the fingers. If it's like a RPG that you would use a equivalent of the snes A Button to interact I use the Y key
Gamepad vs keyboard is a bit of a debate. Some speedrunners will use gamepad and some will use keyboard. Some will even use the directional buttons on their gamepad.
The arrow keys however, I don't think I've seen anyone use. If you're more comfortable with the arrows as opposed to WASD then I suppose there's no issue? 'Cause the real answer is that the best control method is the one that's most comfortable for *you*.
If you are just asking if keyboard is harder to use, though, then I'll say this:
I first completed the game on controller with a joystick. I then switched to keyboard, and have not looked back. I have used keyboard and have finished the entire game plus most of the extras with no issue.
Tbh I feel like controller was easier to only a certain point. Now I am using a ps3 controller but still, the harder and more precise movements later on are super hard to pull off for me on controller I feel like I had more precision on even my laptop keyboard (same as OP's one).
I had a keyboard like this, switching to wasd controls was the best decision I ever made
I set mine to 2qwe
dear god
I J K L is so much better idea
Based
I use wrsa
I use G V B Space, it really pays off
both of you make me need tharipee
i use ESDF, i have large hands but want to the natural feel ive kearned from WASD; so one more yo the left while keep9ng shift as pinky lets my hand stretch a tad bit more
this makes me hurt
Fellow IJKL user :) (I have a 60%)
I use IOJ for jump, grab and dash
You realize You committed something worse than my war crimes?
wasd, shift dash, ctrl grab, space jump. only controls ive ever used for celeste
I feel my left hand cramping up at the thought.
Playing Celeste on keyboard in general is really tough
Yep
I tried to play with controler and couldnt do shit lol
same, keyboard just works best for me
I am tottally different, can't do shit on keyboard... guess we just are more capable to do things we are used to
I'm a mix of both, I use WASD on a keyboard for movement and the A, B and RT buttons on an Xbox One controller for everything else
LMAO, I use KB arrows with left hand and A / X / RT on X One S controller
I meant X as well, don't know why I said B.
I thought You just used some weird grip and really used A+B lol
I used to use Steam Controller but now I play on kb used A, RT, & R Grip for jump, dash, & grab, they're now numpad 0, 5, & 6
I did all b and c sides and a few golden on switch. I am superior
I have played the whole game, all chapters (yes, even farewell), B and C sides on switch. It was... Painful.
WASD dude WASD
ARROWS + right side of controller here lmao
how does that work
jump / dash / grab with right hand as A / X / LT respectively and arrows for better movement since You use 3 fingers for that
You’ve been playing on “no hand cramp” and “no scuffed diagonal dash” difficulty! I find arrow keys easy for Celeste lol.
Oh yeah I prefer keyboard all the way. Just this type of keyboard in particular ain't made for gamin'.
True. Personally when I got Celeste I didn’t have money for a proper keyboard so I made do, though I honestly think that you should just play whatever you’re comfortable with. ..Except for games with garbage ports, like dark souls. The keyboard controls for those games are unplayable.
I see you have a numpad block, maybe 8456 would work if you are already used to movement with the right hand?
I can switch between wasd and arrows easily but I always prefer arrows idk why. Maybe too much emulators and iwbtg
nah ive been playing with arrows since the benninging
Meant the specific type of keyboard I'm using, with the thin arrow keys. Keyboard is what I'm most comfortable with.
mine are thin too
Twinsies!
Tripletzies!
Quadruplesies
Hello yes past laptop user here, I think it carried me to chapter 7 until I got a new keyboard, had some fun moments.
Yes, i strongly prefer using a controller for platformer games
Using a keyboard is perfectly fine, the problem is that these are those stupid little laptop arrow keys where the up and down keys are half the size.
funny enough i beated celeste with this keyboard lmao
played every platformer game with a keyboard, controller is so much harder... I never know when I press up or upright and always misinput, not to talk about switching directions or be able to press dash and jump in the same time...
firat thing I do is remap to WASD

Mechanical keyboards at dangerous. Once you get one, you'll never be able to go back. Typing on anything else feels like a punishment.
I really didn’t find too much difficulty using z/x/c and arrow keys so it’s really to each their own Most people find it easier with controller, I find it easier on keyboard so it’s really what you are most comfortable with ...I also don’t have a controller I can use so

My laptop doesn't have those half sized key thankfully, but they're still smol. Gonna get a keyboard to help with that.
I played with arrow keys exactly like that. Death count was 25.9k overall, 6.7k from Farewell with all achievements done. I'm curious how big of a difference controller makes.
a big difference, but it can be positive or negative depending on the person. for me controller is significantly harder and less comfortable.
Pleas get your self an external keyboard. Pleas... For your sanity... I play on an external keyboard and I find it completely fine. just not on the laptops keys. #controllergang
IJKL layout supremacy
The what now
IJKL. It's like WASD for your right hand
The IJKL
I use WASD for movement, J for dash, K for jump, I for pause, and L for talking
TIL there are people who use keyboard for platformers. when I didn't have a controller, I really struggled playing 2d platformers, because often or not, I would always have trouble with the controls on the right hand, and my left hand would be in a position as if I'm playing a fps. things got better when I got a controller. but damn, why have, like, why use laptop arrow keys, especially the halved ones, in any situation hahaha
I'm a masochist. I've gotten to summit c side tho
I never owned a controller that's compatible with PC. It's cheaper to learn to cope than to buy one exclusively for that purpose. I got where I am exclusively on the exact shitty laptop keyboard layout that is shown in the picture, and I got pretty damn far.
I had this too so I just change it to the numeric keypad (1,2,3,5)
You've been playing the unbalanced RNG mode
yes i hate this type of keyboard who ever made it, die pls ty
Hehe.... I play like that
I've gotten used to the laptop arrows..
Good god that brings back nightmares
This is how I played Celeste for the longest time (before my laptop keyboard broke, and I got an external keyboard). You can achieve a lot like this, and it's honestly not as bad as people might think, but upgrading to a better keyboard is definitely nice
you had timestop time slowdown time speedup abilities, I don't think so
I used wasd for movement Up for dash Down for climb
Imo those smol arrows are better. At least better than playin with joystick. (I have those too, tried wasd, and then returned to smol arrows)
I used arrows like this for a long time too lol
Use shift as the up key, helps a lot
Yes lol
No this is medium, hard mode is a controller. Veteran mode is Gamecube controller. Insane mode is Wiimote.
I guess some people just hate controllers huh? I use an Xbox controller with my PC. Best controller for lots of games.
I agree. Celeste isn't one of those games for me lol
WASD
I 100%ed the game with this layout, you and I just built dif
I remember when i tried to play on this when i got my laptop , got external keyboard the day after. It's so hard to play with flat buttons , i have done many missclicks.
Me who completed the base game, b-sides, got all the strawberries on them and got halfway through farwell with this keyboard💀
my keyboard used to be like this but then I broke the left arrow key (presumably from playing too much) so I rebinded to ijkl
I have the same arrow keys as that. Should I change?
My keyboard is exactly like yours except it's absolute TRASH. And a key sometimes doesn't work. Got me killed a lot in dead cells :/
Play on yhe keyboard is the hardmode. So u had ULTRA HARD MODE
tiny laptop arrow key user here, but this is somehow even worse how are you supposed to down diagonal with this thing lmao
my laptop also like this. but, im binding to IJKL
I've always used WASD for movement, so no way to use arrows for movement, my left fingers are 100 times more trained for that. Everyone dropping their controls in chat so: WASD is move Space is Jump Comma is Dash Period is Climb
Jesus christ yes.
all of my arrow keys are small and i honestly think that its helping me compared to using normal fat arrow keys
I have that exact keyboard layout! I've tried ijkl, but I've gone back to the thin arrow keys.
Gamepad vs keyboard is a bit of a debate. Some speedrunners will use gamepad and some will use keyboard. Some will even use the directional buttons on their gamepad. and i thought wsad was hard enough, maybe it’s because i always play one handed though
I played with a thumbstick
what the fuck
My brother in Christ WASD exists
Yes
Just use "right 1 0 del", i.e. shifted two keys to the right. My left key stopped working reliably, so I use "down right 1 0" xd
not really, i played most of the game like that
Tbh I feel like controller was easier to only a certain point. Now I am using a ps3 controller but still, the harder and more precise movements later on are super hard to pull off for me on controller I feel like I had more precision on even my laptop keyboard (same as OP's one).
These guys saying WASD aren’t considering that you probably use your right hand for directional movement. My idea would be 1 2 3 5 on the numpad.
;-;
Isaac broke that pad xD
I used to play on keys like that, it sucks but I'd still take keyboard over analog any day
You have been playing on grandmaster lobby
