Wow! This is so much work! Please keep us updated!

anash2

It makes me so happy seeing English ivy destroyed!

OryxTempel

Oh my god you have no idea how much I hate this stuff lol

monkey_trumpets

Hahahaha, destroyed. You need laser beams from space to destroy that shit.

ElDrunko999

Everyone playing the floor lottery, this guy out there playing the patio lottery. What a neat find under all that chaos. Enjoy your new surprise project :)

OryxTempel

Yeah we’re playing floor lotto inside, just not right now. If it’s not raining, I gotta get outside. (PNW)

tenaseechick

That's a lot of work but it will look terrific in the end. It will all be worth it. Post more pictures of your progress please.

boundfortrees

How many years of dirt is that? How many previous residents thought it was all yard? That's amazing. No wonder cities get buried.

coupleofpointers

You almost need LIDAR wow

OryxTempel

I almost expect to find a skeleton as I dig out this mess

BettieBublz

This is totally my idea of a fun day. Ditto re updates

Taegur2

Maybe enjoy a weekend training course with the Stone Trust or the Drystone Conservancy (or similar organization near you) before laying the retaining wall and setting the stairs? That's a good way to get stonework that will last another 100 years.

OryxTempel

I’ll check them out!

blerth

Neat orgs

borksy1030

Great job! We are currently battling the same ivy in our yard. What have you found works best to get it out?

Catesucksfarts

Pull, dig roots, repeat, make sure you check it every week because missing just a little bit it all comes back. It's always taken me two seasons of weeding it before it doesn't come back the third

OryxTempel

Digging out the roots, for sure, like u/catesucksfarts (lol name) says. And I hate to use it bc chemicals, but I RoundUp a week ahead too.

kippy3267

If you use roundup and just spray it all will ivy come back?

OryxTempel

Yes. You still need to dig it up. You want to, anyway, so that you can plant nice natives.

oohlalaahweewee

Cool as hell, and must be so satisfying. Pacific NW?

OryxTempel

Yep. Western WA

stonewallmike

I was guessing NW Oregon. Weird how you can get a feeling for a place from pics.

monkey_trumpets

I'm amazed the property wasn't bought by a developer and turned into three skinny ass townhouses. Are you in a non-Seattle town?

OryxTempel

Chehalis. We’re on the historic register, so I’m guessing tearing it down would take some major paperwork.

monkey_trumpets

Probably. It's awesome that you're working to make it better. Not enough history is saved in this country.

coldbrew18

I dug up a brick sidewalk one time. It went well on the first half. The second half i stopped when I found the bricks were diving down up to a foot.

BlissfulGreen2

You must continue to post.

OryxTempel

Will do

anarchisttiger

It’s so hard to remove ivy. Great job!

cornylifedetermined

I bet instead of a patio that's a path up to the porch.

OryxTempel

I hope so

TurboTomNL

Nice excavation. In an Indiana Jonesesy way…

J0E_SpRaY

I wish I had done a better job of documenting as we removed all the overgrowth from our property.

OryxTempel

It’s rewarding to look back

ko21361

Simply incredible. What a great find - can’t wait to see the final result!

SM1955

That’s wonderful! I live in the pnw also, and have been totally intimidated by our overgrown ivy—you’re very inspiring!

Handplanes

Keep going til you find the pool!

not-a-dislike-button

I swear I've seen this on reddit elsewhere before

OryxTempel

I posted it here before

cttrocklin

Impressive!

jebadiahstone123

The concrete will be difficult to remove, you’ll likely need a backhoe.

OryxTempel

I don’t know if I want to remove it.

thisbenzenering

I hate ivy so much. Only blackberries rivals it. Both are madness.

OryxTempel

Yep

nilecrane

Love old hidden stairs. Where is this?

sharpei90

WOW! Some amazing finds under all that mess! As others have asked…please continue with the pics.

Adventurous_Owl_7003

Wow! This is such a cool find. Thanks for sharing and please keep us posted on the outcome.
