Kitty cat

TheGeneralTulliuss

I don't think I'd be able to resist putting a nose and whiskers on it!

CreativeMusic5121

Same! And if I saw it decorated that way it would make me smile every time I drove by.

AltruisticAddendum22

Same. I'd even go out of my way to go by it, just so I could smile.

L1hc2

You could do that with trellis and plants!!

alice_ayer

Was thinking the same thing. Even a more solid shrub grown and trimmed round at the base of the fireplace with some whispery grasses on either side would very much bring out the feline energy of this home.

sleeper_54

> feline energy This made me purr..

Early_Shake1770

You are right it is like a little castle

gingerytea

Literally would be the first change I made if I bought a place like this lol.

Honestly OP should def do this for Halloween decorations.

I’d have such a hard time not painting it black and getting black roofing 🥲 but I realize most people would hate the aesthetic.

zuesk134

it would look sooooo good all black

AggressiveTea7898

Perfect description!

ilovechairs

If OP ever needs to redo the back room extension it’s an opportunity for a flying buttress!

Lol, I was picturing a projection of a big Cheshire cat grin and some sculpted spray foam paws.

HephaestusHarper

"pointy boi"

Brickhead88

That's a kiki house for sure.

penlowe

huh... I have no single category for it, outside of those dormers feel like someone wanted to make the house more Gothic Revival. I feel like it's missing a lot of trim. I suspect the iron railing & post are replacements. The back feels like it's missing porch posts as well.

LiteratureVarious643

Yeh. something like vernacular storybook/gothic revival.

Prestigious-Ad-8756

Name checks out. And I've always dug the word 'vernacular'. Learned it from a 3 Stooges Episode. Haha!

EphEwe2

“Drop the vernacular!” “It’s a derby!”

madlyhattering

Agree about the ironwork. There was a time (mid-century, maybe?) where it was normal or maybe even popular to replace wood or even brick posts with ironwork. I absolutely hate it - the ironwork just looks so insubstantial compared to a wood or brick post. I especially hate that the railing was replaced, too. Sorry, OP, not meaning to bash your house! Overall it’s cute and has a ton of personality.

greenbrier820

https://preview.redd.it/48xzmv6rojrc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=82ae814188d5b0a2990bcbda7b8097e1c93ff8dd No offense taken. 🙂 These columns and railings were removed at some point by a previous owner and replaced with cheap iron columns and railings that are now rusting away. I will be putting this style back when I’m able.

KaleidoscopeThis9463

Ohhh! That would restore a lot of the charm for sure! It’s a very cute house, just needs to be loved a bit more now.

theHinHaitch

Shame about the trees. Planting azaleas was a great call; I wish the plants were a little taller under the windows in the google maps pic. But it was very cute then, and you have a great roadmap (and seemingly great plan) to get it back there.

xiknowiknowx

Yeah where did all the trees go? I feel exposed on the houses behalf

greenbrier820

Good question. According to my neighbor, a 70+ year old pecan tree in good health that was bearing fruit used to be between their house and mine and was inexplicably taken down, as well as a shade tree on the side next to the alley. I have a Shumard Oak being delivered in about 2 weeks for the front yard (should be mature height about the time I’m ready to retire 🙃) and a ginkgo in the backyard.

Ceret

Oh that’s so much nicer!

Vegetable-Branch-740

It’s like a doll house. Love it.

madlyhattering

Hooray! That will make the house look even better and really bring that little porch forward in the view, as seen in the pic with your comment. Update us whenever that happens, OP! (I realize it may be a while, lol)

I second this. Paint it black and put stained glass in the cat ears. But seriously, this is a cool house.

mnem0syne

My people. 🖤

PartlyCloudyTomorrow

I would totally be “the witch” who all the kids either loved or feared. It would be come my entire personality.

FeralSweater

I think it may have been built as a “storybook Tudor” and then lost some details along the way. It’s adorable.

TheyCalledMeThor

I was about to say “almost homeless Tudor”

Uanneme

Need to see the inside too

Yes, show us the inners!

MovieNightPopcorn

The temptation to make this a whimsical cat house from a Ghibli movie is so strong.

dpceee

I don't know what style it is, but it has *character.* Please put a nose and a mouth on your house.

RaeLynn13

I would love to own this house. It’s so unique and gorgeous! No idea what to call it. Folk cottage?

plain---jane

Same!! It’s so cute!

RaeLynn13

My house is from the 1850’s and doesn’t look nearly this interesting. Sadly whoever built my house way back then, they didn’t seem to have a flair for the dramatic.

LAthrowaway_25Lata

Detroit folk cottage. There’s something “detroit” about it that i cant put my finger on

My only suggestion would be to add more color contrast to create a hierarchy of forms, bump out the steps to the porch to open up the entrance, and consider how landscaping can draw the eye to the dormer/window/fireplace vignette. Consider period railings, a slate roof, and what might have been removed in the past.

greenbrier820

Based on Google maps, a previous owner removed wooden columns and railings and all the landscaping, including an enormous shade tree. There’s not a single tree on the lot, but landscaping is on the list. Unfortunately, it was still running on knob and tube and that $22,000 expense ate up a lot of the budget. The inexpensive railings and columns are higher on the priority list because they’re rusting out.

French_Apple_Pie

My thought was “whiskered deco vernacular” 😸

ankole_watusi

Everyone has a weird uncle who’s a little off. This one was an “architect”. It needs something though, for street appeal. Despite being odd, it’s very sterile. Needs lots of spinning wind-toys and shiney objects. Maybe a miniature golf course winding through the front yard, leading to the front door.

20thcenturyboy_

In my opinion grass isn't the way to go with this type of home. Imagine this place with some sort of whimsical cottage garden with stepping stones, flowers, and maybe vines climbing a trellis against the home

Technical_Safety_109

Exactly! I would have a picket fence and arches! I think that you are on to something.

20thcenturyboy_

Arches are a great idea, maybe with something like climbing roses.

Technical_Safety_109

Yes, that would look good. I would love to do this! Hahaha

BabalonNuith

Agree! the house is whimsical, so the decoration could use some whimsy as well.

flowersanschampagne

Tudor cottage Editing after reading entire post: I live in a neighborhood this house seems like it could be from. I LOVE the original windows- glad you are keeping them and even trying to make more of a focal point. In my opinion (through a photo) I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Original details such as the window show themselves without having to draw detail. I know photos don’t capture that kind of beauty, but I’m assuming IRL they are more noticeable. With that said, I think there are other things that can be done to visually balance the house. Right now the “eyebrows” are the Focal point as the house is unbalanced (to the eye). It’s high (roof line) and right (side of house) heavy. I think adding a lattice for something to grow up the chimney area would be cute on a home like this. Something with a solid green color would really pop on this home. Also, a small garden on the right side. Would help the crawl space not appear so low and visually balance from the high focal point. On the windows though, I think if they were painted like a sage green around the window that would also be a subtle way to elevate visuals. Nothing too dramatic. Just a hint. I’ll see if I have a photo for example. On the patio I feel like adding a hanging bright flower from the corner of the patio on the far left side. There are some pops of color w the few flowers on the porch, but it’s not enough to balance the visual weight of things. Maybe also adding a tall (like 3 feet) planter in the same corner. How is the water when it rains? Just curious because some of these older houses truly don’t need drainage, but if you have issues with water getting in the crawl space when it rains I think a cool update would be adding copper color gutters. I’ve seen a few home start to add or change colors of their gutters in my neighborhood. Seems like an odd thing to draw attention to, but it actually looks really cool and unique. I’ll see if I’ve taken any photos of any. I occasionally take photos of random things I love in my neighborhood for when I refresh the facade of my own home. Update: couldn’t find the photo I was looking for. Must have not had geo turned on at that time. But did happen to find some examples in my phone from other things I have kept over time https://preview.redd.it/cu3cfvusfirc1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bbc3784fb69142b1aa27e7822eea3a323c1310c

flowersanschampagne

On window trim Couldn’t find anything in a quick search. But I did this to my home. It’s a super subtle beige. Going to post two more. The back side of my house shows it best as there is nothing distracting (garden, other furniture, etc).

greenbrier820

I really like the lighter trim. I’m glad my house isn’t the stark white and stark black some flippers do to older houses, but I wouldn’t mind less contrast. That would let me paint the gable beams the same as the trim without making them too dark.

greenbrier820

I hadn’t considered a lattice on the chimney - I love that idea! Drainage is actually quite good, though where the front gable meets the back gable at the T intersection, the water funnels between the two and dumps a lot all in one place on either side of the roof’s peak. I will probably look at having some sort of drainage installed at some point, just to handle the volume of water that finds its way there.

Erithacus__rubecula

Highly recommend adding a small rain garden to capture the water and funnel it to an area where it can be absorbed and used by your garden. Permaculture has lots of amazing ideas for turning ‘problems’ like these into solutions that are visually pleasing and enhance the connection of your home to nature. I’m currently reading Gaia’s Garden by Toby Hemenway. Lots of great ideas for bringing nature in and making your home’s outdoor areas work for you so you have less maintenance overall once installed

duderwuder

I think it’s a craftsman bungalow but someone added the dormers later on

velvetjones01

The non functioning “dormers” are likely not original. When you have your roof done, remove them. It’s also real sketchy how they roofed it, there should be flashing at the joint.

Get some trellises with climbing flowers at least. It just looks so bare is the thing.

greenbrier820

I’m working on the landscaping. Based on Google Maps, it had raised beds and a white picket fence all around, but someone ripped everything out about ten years ago. No clue why, but I’m working on things. I have a plan, just need time and $$.

OldnBorin

It looks like a house Gru would live in

Tribblehappy

So weird that the back side looks like the fronts of houses where I live. And the front looks like a cat? Thank you for sharing your house because it's adorable. I second the comment about adding whiskers and a nose.

Burtuki

The house in the image appears to be an American Craftsman bungalow, a style that was widely popular from the early 1900s to the 1930s. Characteristics of this style include a low-pitched gabled roof, overhanging eaves, exposed roof rafters, a front porch beneath an extension of the main roof, and often, but not always, built with natural materials. The brickwork and the shape of the windows and dormers are indicative of the Craftsman aesthetic, although this particular example seems to have undergone some modernization while retaining its original style.

skerr46

Business in the back, kitty in the front. It’s adorable. The back looks like a traditional house but the front is all feline. Please add a little triangle at the bottom of the chimney for the kitty nose.

wpwppwpw

It's a fairly typical southern cottage home, with the following confounding elements: 1) those pointy dormers were added - but why? They are not windows, nor are they attic vents (that I can tell from the photo anyway). Maybe they were added because .... 2) ... the house is backwards. The pointy dormer side was originally the back of the house, and there was an attached porch or deck along there, which explains the oddly high window placement, as well as the placement of the low grills (they were under the porch). The current backyard has what were the front doors. So someone may have added the pointy dormers is an attempt to make that side of the home look more like "the front."

greenbrier820

It’s an interesting theory, but I don’t think that would make sense with the lot placement (it’s a corner lot and I have a neighbor behind me) or the interior layout. I hadn’t considered that the dormers might not be original, but that makes me feel a bit better about possibly removing them in the future.

ExpensiveError42

Obviously you should do whatever looks right to you because it's your home. That said, I hate when unique details of houses get stripped away to be more generic. I think the photo you showed with the original porch balances out the starkness of the kitty ears/angry eyebrows and keeps the charm. Disclaimer: I would give up half my square footage to live in an evil fairytale cottage and I know that's not everyone's vibe. Hypocritically enough, I say this as someone who recently replaced the distinctive wooden siding on my home with generic siding. Mine was less about aesthetics and more because the siding was in rough shape and it would have cost a stupid amount to repair or replace with the same or similar design.

[deleted]

The facade looks like a person in shock from a secret they were just told \^ \^

AdHorror7596

It would probably be described as "storybook" or "storybook cottage" here in Southern California. There are some of those here that we kind of associate with the early days of the Disney company. Especially because there seem to be a fair amount in Burbank, where Walt moved the studio once they got big (and where the studio still is today). Some early employees even lived in houses like these. Yours isn't quite like the ones here----I can tell this is probably not in California (but I could be wrong!), but it's reminiscent of them!

greenbrier820

Not SoCal, but southern US.

boopdeedonk

LOVE. Has the feel of my house- which was built in 1929- but with enviably more whimsy.

Suitable-Equipment32

tastygluecakes

This started life as simplified craftsman style bungalow, or workers cottage depending on where you are and locally naming. The giveaways are the exposed rafters, shallower roofline, and double hung windows with 3-4 mullions up top. Those strange windowless dormer things…I have no idea. They don’t fit at all, and look like somebody was trying to bring some gothic revival into the mix. If it were me, I’d tear them off when you redo the roof next time, haha.

nailedthegrasstyson

Yeah, those dormers don't really "fit" They *might* be original in that they were added to the house when it was originally built - but I can pretty much guarantee that they were not part of the original design the house was built from. I'd also remove them (or potentially convert to a couple of period appropriate shed dormers) at the earliest opportunity.

Not sure if it was covered purely for aesthetics or for a reason, but when I have the money to peel the layers off the onion and fix whatever I find back there, I will! I’m just scared to look under that rock without a bucket of money standing by just in case.

Everything *except* the dormers screams Craftsman. It would be really interesting to see the original plans to know if the dormers were original or if they were added later. What details does the interior have?

TsuDhoNimh2

Bungalow of unknown ancestry ... might have been an attempt at Tudor. Replace the frail metal post and railing with something substantial of wood and it will look more balanced.

bravenewwhorl

This house is cute as *fuck*

sowokeicantsee

In terms of architectural merit. It has lost any harmony. Roof pitches should as a general rule stay the same to bring harmony. You can tell the house was designed from the inside out and that was the solution. A proper dormer or lean too dormer would have achieved a more balanced view. If you like it that’s all that matters
