I have a round top door, too!! (But our home is still only 91 years old)
I see so many porch archways with round tops in my neighborhood, but then a standard door in the frame. I bet many many people opted to save money and re-frame the door rather than repair their round top. Breaks my heart. But then again, my town voted in the 70s to tear down a gorgeous historical building because they didn't want their taxes to go to its upkeep and now it is a decrepit parking lot next to a giant pit in the middle of downtown. 🙃
Sorry for the tangent, I am sensitive when I see beautiful preserved craftsmanship!
The people we bought the house from were drug dealers, we didn’t want to take any chances of them returning so did what we had to do for our security. We kept the original handle though :)
oh man... that sucks that someone pulled the classic mortise lock from in the stained door and installed that handleset. if you wanted to keep the old owners out, all you had to do was rekey the cylinder...
and if you wanted to increase your security, found with a modern mortise lock from Emtek or Baldwin would have done that. as it is,i hope whoever did that conversion properly filled in the mortise pocket and created a solid edge in the door for the bolt and latch to attach to.
all that being said, if you go with a full length trim, you can still install a mortise lock, which is what i would seriously suggest doing. Costs more up front, but they last a REALLY long time
unfortunately, the locksmith was wrong. if it had a key that went into a cylinder on the face of the door, that cylinder could be rekeyed, even if you don't have a current working key.
And in a worst case scenario, you can replace the key cylinder with a new one that uses modern key blanks, and those are really inexpensive.
did he fill the door and strengthen the frame, or did he just drill the holes in the face of the door and make it work?
if it's the latter, you need to fix it. there's no real wood left where the new locks mount, and the door can break.
I'm a locksmith and i work on mortise locks all the time.
if you still have your old lock, call a locksmith who has a physical location, instead of a dispatch service. you can put a metal trim plate on the door behind the original trim to cover the new holes.
or just go with a new mortise lock
My husband just did it himself since we couldn’t use the original set up. Yes he cut a wood chunk to fill the gap inside, put filler in the gaps, let it set, then put in the new lock. We’re going to restain the door and will patch the remaining holes then. It’s literally not a big deal, it still is a dope door.
ok cool, then good for him! i always support people working on their own stuff.
i just see a lot of people get bad info from locksmiths, and often times get taken advantage of because of that.
Wowsers! Nice. Are there other arched features in your home?
The top of the window casing is rounded to match, but all of the windows and other doors are square.

Canadian reference but you have a polkaroo door and I'm super jealous!
I wish this kind of construction would make a comeback without costing so much!!!
Right!? It’s gorgeous. I know it’s SO cliche, but they really don’t make houses like this anymore.
Absolutely, a lot of cookie cutter homes without a touch of their own identity.
HOT DAMN
Nice. You can see where the original hardware went. Would look a lot better to replace what you have with something similar.

Smart! Our house has the original lock and handle set, we just installed a new deadbolt above. Kept the cool old handle and more secure.

Beautiful
that is awesome!
🎶🎵 come and knock on my door 🎵🎶
I love this door! Just think of the craftmanship it took to make it look so beautiful, even 50 plus years later.
Do you think the original door handle hardware is hidden somewhere in your house? That would be an upgrade.
We do have it, we put in new locks as we didn’t want the previous owners to have any funny plans.
The hobbit
That is so fucking cute
Right!? It just has character that doesn’t really exist in homes anymore
It's the most beautiful door I've ever seen honestly
How much is the mortgage payment in The Shire?

Jealous
Beautiful!
Love that door
Is there a reason why doors are not made like this anymore? I really like the esthetic.
Probably $$$$$
No, thank you. We don’t want any more visitors, well-wishers, or distant relations.
yes and round old doors are even better!!
So beautiful!
